HMS Northumberland (1798)
Latest comment: 15 years ago2 comments2 people in discussion
There are so sophisticated specifications known only for specialists. My image is certainly the better representation of Northumberland (1798) than this one File:HMS Dolphin 1751.jpg of HMS Dolphin 1751. Mathiasrex (talk) 17:56, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
I'd disagree with that, since the image of Dolphin is a fair contemporary representation, while the model of the Northumberland would presumably be expected to be an accurate and professionally executed representation of that ship. Only it isn't, and is quite misleading as Martocticvs has pointed out. And since we can get accurate and contemporary representations of the Northumberland, I don't see any reason to use a photograph of this model to represent her. Ship article hatnotes
Latest comment: 13 years ago3 comments1 person in discussion
Hi Martocticvs,
Thank you for contacting me after re-adding the hatnotes. What is the reasoning behind having the hatnotes there? I can appreciate that set indices are different from disambiguation pages, but I don't understand why that affects when to employ hatnotes linking to them. For hatnotes linking to disambiguation pages, there is a guideline about not disambiguating article names that are not ambiguous. The rationale behind this guideline, applied to the current case, is that no user who is looking for one HMS Boyne would end up at an article about another. When a user types "HMS Boyne" into the search bar, the user is provided immediately with a set index that lists all the ships named "HMS Boyne". No one looking for another HMS Boyne would end up at this one because they would have been provided with the option of choosing between the two before arriving at the article. Even if they accidently chose the wrong one on the set index, they would know about the set index because they were just at it and they could easily just go back. If they arrived at the article via an internal link, they would have been directed to the correct article because that would have had to have been specified on the preceding article or else it would have directed them to the set index. Is there a separate guideline that provides a reason to employ hatnotes linking to set indices in cases analagous to those where hatnotes linking to disambiguation pages would be inappropriate?
I really appreciate you taking the time to explain the reasoning behind the hatnotes linking to set indices. I am not convinced that employing such hatnotes is a good policy, but I'm working in too many disparate areas of Wikipedia at the moment to give a policy change discussion the time it deserves. Because I may eventually get around to starting such a discussion, I have two questions: 1) Is this policy stated in Wikipedia guidelines or is it simply a defacto policy? 2) Would you personally object to the policy changing so that hatnotes linking to set indices would not be included on ship articles?
It's good to have that background information about the current title-related discussion. I don't think the usefulness of the set indices would be denied by removing the hatnotes because users would still come across them when typing "HMS Boyne" etc. into the search bar. If the set indices need to be linked from the articles and set indices should be treated like lists rather than disambiguation pages, a more appropriate location for the links would be in "See also" sections at the bottom of articles; it is disambiguation links that are located in hatnotes, not links to lists. Nonetheless, I can see that the first issue to straighten out is that of the article titles. I hope the ongoing discussion proves fruitful.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:
tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.
As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.
The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.
The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting
Latest comment: 6 years ago1 comment1 person in discussion
As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. Nominations and voting will take place on the main project talkpage: here and here. Thank you for your time. For the co-ordinators, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:35, 8 December 2017 (UTC)

Greetings,
"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.
Dear colleague. I think that you initially created the article on Spanish ship America (1736), so I am writing to let you know that I have drastically altered it. This article originally claimed that the 60-gun America, when captured at Havana in 1762, was added to the British Navy under the name of HMS Moro. This is not correct. The America was actually burnt at Havana by her captors. The ship which was added to the British Navy as HMS Moro in 1762 was actually the former Spanish 70-gun Aquilon. The source of this error was a misprint in William Laird Clowes History of the Royal Navy - volume 3, page 247, where the words "Renamed Moro" incorrectly appear against the America rather than against the Aquilon.
You may be interested to know that I am currently writing (in conjunction with co-authors) a comprehensive volume on Spanish Warships in the Age of Sail 1700-1860, which will be published by Seaforth in 2021 (in the same series as my other books on the British and French sailing navies). Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election are now open. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting doesn't commence until 15 September. If you have any questions, you can contact any member of the coord team. Cheers, Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 02:38, 1 September 2019 (UTC)
