translation issue

Hi, Marek69.

I'm trying to correct a mistranslation (false cognate) in the "Languages" section of the English-lenguage entry "Aviculture" but I'm unable. "Aviculture" is not "Avicultura" in Portuguese. "Avicultura" is "Poultry Farming". Unfortunately, I'm not allowed to remove the Portuguese language link from the "Aviculture" page and then subsequently link it to its proper place, which is under "Poultry Farming". I guess such powers are "above my pay grade" (ha, ha). You assistance is most welcome.

Cordially,

Frank Duurvoort (talk) 15:59, 21 August 2014 (UTC)Frank

Hi Frank, I've changed the link as you suggested. This is done on the Wikidata site.
I'm not sure why it didn't work for you. Have you logged into Wikidata before?
(It should log you in automatically with SUL (single user login), if not, use the same username and password as Wikipedia)
I suspect that some of the other language links may be incorrect too (i.e. Spanish), however my knowledge of these languages is insufficient to make an informed judgement, so I shall leave it to others who can.
Kind Regards Marek.69 talk 18:10, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for ZooCon help.

Hi, we met at Portsmouth ZooCon Wikithon last weekend, so I wanted to say hello and thanks for your help on the GZ article. Ctrl+X has already proved a handy keyboard shortcut. There was a reference or citation tool that you showed me which I haven't been able to locate- can you give a link please? Richard Nowell (talk) 13:01, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi Richard, it was a pleasure to meet you and to help out at the ZooCon :-)
I think the tool you are referring to is MakeRef, written by Magnus Manske; the English version can be found here.

Wikipedia and non-commercial images

Hi Marek

We met at Portsmouth on Saturday at the Zooniverse meet-up.

I did some editing of "Hanny's Voorwerp" on Saturday and wanted to continue this week. I think it's important to show the image that Hanny saw on Galaxy Zoo when she first found the Voorwerp, but this appears to be impossible. I can't directly link to an image in Wikipedia but must first copy it to the Commons. There are too many restrictions on images in the Commons. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey allows their images to be used for non-commercial use so I assumed that it would be all right to use the image in Wikipedia but apparently not.

I was going to write an article about Moon Zoo but this would mean showing images from LROC and Wikipedia would probably stop that as well so I am losing interest in the whole project now.

Anyway, I enjoyed Portsmouth and the two pubs we visited.

Regards Geoff Roynon (talk) 14:26, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

Can I butt in here? The original SDSS picture was in the HsV article for a month recently but was then taken out. Wikipedia likes freely-available images that can be used commercially. SDSS doesn't allow this, which is why, for example, the BBC's Sky At Night doesn't use SDSS images in their magazine. However NASA images can be used freely, so LROC images might well be useable, if that's any help.Richard Nowell (talk) 15:57, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi Geoff, I'm sorry to hear that you've experienced problems editing Wikipedia.
I've had a quick look on the SDSS website, and in the section on image use policy it states:

It might be possible to use to images if we ask SDSS for permission explaining where we wish to use and why.
I must confess that my knowledge of copyright law is limited, so I will ask around and see if I can find a definitive answer. I shall get back to you as soon as I can. :-)
I'm glad you enjoyed the day in Portsmouth on Saturday. I did also. :-)
Best Regards -- Marek.69 talk 17:00, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
Hello. It was good to meet both of you at the weekend.
Unfortunately, it is the case that SDSS use a non-commercial license, which means it can't be used here on Wikipedia under that license (the non-commercial restriction is a very badly defined restriction. It can be included in the article under fair use, although that can be challenged. The page to look at that explains this best is Wikipedia:Non-free content. Ideally, if you can find a NASA (public domain) or ESO (CC-BY) image that shows something similar, then that would be the image to use.
With Moonzoo, LROC images from NASA should be fine. With images from other sites, it's best to look around for an image usage policy before using them.
Hope that helps! Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 18:41, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for clarifying this Mike. Copyright law can be very frustrating.
Sorry Geoff :-( Maybe the images can be sourced elsewhere.
Kind Regards -- Marek.69 talk 19:10, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

Expensive Retrievals.

I think that you have misunderstood the idea of an "expensive" retrieval.

Even your Fortran example uses an array in memory... "A(*)"

Referencing an element in an array is NOT a time-costly operation, it takes just a couple of computer op-codes, and may take a NANOSECOND.

I am talking about doing a binary search where THERE IS NO ARRAY.

This means that every time a record is needed, the record must be obtained from, for example, a communication line. Each retrieval may take a 1/2 second -- 500,000,000 TIMES LONGER than getting an element from your data array A(*).

In those situations, reducing the number of retrievals from 40 to 22 reduces the search time from 20 seconds to 11 seconds.

This, I hope you will agree, is a worthwhile and simple way of reducing waiting time.

BTW, I programmed exclusively in Fortran for the first 5 years of my professional life.

Japanese alphabet

Hi Marek69,

I have problems spelling Dairen (which is the Japanese name of Dalian), Ryojun (which is the Japanese name of Lushun City), Liaodong Peninsula (Liaotung Peninsula), Korea Bay, Yellow Sea, and Bohai Sea in the Japanese alphabet. Please also take a look at Dalian Bay because I have the exact same problems as I do with Dalian. I will be forever thankful and very happy if you know anyone who is an expert on the Japanese alphabet and he or she can help with the Japanese translations with the names that you see above.

                Thank you very much.

Hi, I am in Oxford at the meet up here and the view here is that there is a long standing arrangement to have the Oxford Meet up on the third Sunday of the month which will clash with the proposed English South Coast.

Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews

Hello Marek69. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

I hope this message finds you well and thanks again you for your efforts in this area. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:20, 18 November 2014 (UTC).

Wikimedia genealogy project

Just wondering if you have any thoughts re: the idea of WMF hosting a genealogy project. If so, feel free to contribute to this discussion. And apologies if I have made this request before. ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:05, 10 December 2014 (UTC)

GOCE coordinator elections

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors

Candidate nominations for Guild coordinators to serve from January 1 to June 30, 2015, are currently underway. The nomination period will close at 23:59 on December 15 (UTC), after which voting will commence until 23:59 on December 31, 2014. Self-nominations are welcomed. Please consider getting involved; it's your Guild and it won't coordinate itself, so if you'd like to help coordinate Guild activities we'd love to hear from you.

December 2014 GOCE newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors December 2014 Newsletter

Drive: Thanks to everyone who participated in November's Backlog Elimination Drive. Of the 43 people who signed up for this drive, 26 copy edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: The November Drive removed 26 requests from the Requests page and 509 articles from the {{copy edit}} backlog. We copy edited 83 articles tagged in the target months; July, August, and September 2013. Together with tag removals from articles unsuitable for copy editing, we eliminated July 2013 from the backlog and reduced August and September's tags to 61 and 70 respectively. As of 01:01, 1 December 2014 (UTC), the backlog stood at 1,974 articles, dipping below 2,000 for the first time in the Guild's history (see graph at right). Well done everyone!

Blitz: The December Blitz will run from December 14–20 and will focus on articles related to Religion, in recognition of this month's religious holidays in much of the English-speaking world. Awards will be given out to everyone who copy edits at least one of the target articles. Sign up here!

Election time again: The election of coordinators to serve from 1 January to 30 June 2015 is now underway. Candidates can nominate themselves or others from December 01, 00:01 (UTC), until December 15, 23:59. The voting period will run from December 16, 00:01 (UTC), until December 31, 23:59. You can read about coordinators' duties here. Please consider getting involved and remember to cast you vote—it's your Guild and it doesn't organize itself!

Thank you all once again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve anything without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Baffle gab1978, and Miniapolis.
