India House

Hi Maralia, hope you're having a good summer. I was wondering if I could ask you for a massive favour and ask you to have a look at India House. This is actually a sort of sub-article of HGC, but stands out on its own right, and I sorta ran throught it in the last week. I know the English may be a bit crap, but I wanted to see if this could be FA material since reckon with one more para in the first section on nationalism, and a few more tidbits that I know through the article, it will have everything that is known about the organisation without going into original research. Also, I'll start on the HGC soon, since I've got a bit more time now.Cheers rueben_lys (talk · contribs) 11:58, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Sorry for the delayed reply - I was on wikibreak (week at the beach!) and forgot to leave notice here. Glad to see you are back working on these articles. I'll take a look at India House this week. Maralia (talk) 16:09, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

For answering the call to copyedit the article Montana class battleship during the article's FAC I herby present you with The Copyeditor's Barnstar. Washington, D.C.

Hi Maralia. Another user, Brianboulton, suggested that I contact you to request assistance with "Washington, D.C." Brianboulton just completed an extensive peer review, and he proposed having a "hot-shot MOS expert" taking another look before I proceed with WP:FAC. If you have the time to take a look at the article, I would very much appreciate it. Thank you for your time and (even if you're not an American) have a Happy Fourth of July! Best, epicAdam (talk) 17:28, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

I'm not only American but also a DC-area native (and one of the few that hasn't fled the scene). I'm not sure if I would say there's any 'hot-shot MOS expert' anymore - it's become such a moving target - but I'm a fairly good hand with the old red pencil. I took a quick look at the article, and it's in pretty good shape generally, but I do see some MOS issues I can tackle, and I have a lot of niggling little content questions, too. Do you use AIM or Yahoo or something where we could communicate realtime, to save us both some of the trauma of interminably long talk page lists? My email is enabled if you want to drop me a private note. Maralia (talk) 19:07, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the note. Another D.C. area native? Amazing! I replied with my AIM sn in an email. I use GMail to access AIM so if you try to IM me and it doesn't go through, just let me know. I may need to just download the regular AIM. Thank you for your help with the article. Best, epicAdam (talk) 20:03, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
Hey. I've gone back through and replaced some of the infoplease citations with more reliable sources. If there was anything else that caught your eye that needed to be fixed, just let me know. Thank you! Best, epicAdam (talk) 15:22, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Specify level of copy-editing

Hi Maralia

Could you please specify your level of copy-editing for the military history project here.

These are the levels:

  1. Copy-edit lite: basic proof-reading, spellchecking, punctuation.
  2. English variant conversion: for example, from American English to Commonwealth English, or vice versa.
  3. Naturalising: copy-edit for editors whose English is fluent but not perfect.
  4. FAC prose copy-edit: flow, structure, elegance.
  5. FAC technical copy-edit: MoS-compliance for dashes, hard spaces, numbers, measurement conversion.

Thanks a lot. Wandalstouring (talk) 12:20, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Samuel Johnson

Thanks for the attention; you're a dear :-) SandyGeorgia (Talk) 18:01, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

I couldn't stop myself, even though I have a slew of other copyediting commitments - it's Samuel Johnson! I can't possibly finish it today, and I have to paint a house tomorrow, but hopefully every little bit helps. Maralia (talk) 18:22, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
It's Samuel "Ticcing" Johnson :-) I hope you're painting inside! Heat ... SandyGeorgia (Talk) 19:00, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Maralia, Ottava is almost ready for FAC with Johnson; he's just waiting for Elcobbola's clearance. Would you have one last moment to run through the prose? SandyGeorgia (Talk) 02:02, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

I just got caught up on the talk page discussions, and was wondering how soon the FAC nom would be coming. I'll go through it again tonight, or tomorrow at the latest if we have bedtime issues again tonight. Thanks for letting me know. Maralia (talk) 02:15, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi. I've nominated (surprise, surprise!) HMT Bedfordshire, an article you worked on, for consideration to appear on the Main Page as part of Wikipedia:Did you know. You can see the hook for the article at Template talk:Did you know#Articles created/expanded on July 11, where you will most likely be able to improve it greatly. Thanks, Bellhalla (talk) 06:30, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

On 15 July, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article HMT Bedfordshire, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Changing the format of the Coast Guard cutter pages

Maralia, I specialize in U.S. Coast Guard knowledge, and would like to re-format the Coastal Patrol Boat page to adhere to the standard Ships template. Would it be wise of me to ask permission of anyone before doing it (i.e. am I likely to torque someone off by formatting the page differently?). Just don't want to burn any bridges, and you seem like a good person to ask. Thanks in advance! Cutteragent (talk) 21:40, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Reformatting ship articles to bring them in line with WP:SHIPS standards should make you friends, not enemies - jump right in! After taking a brief look at the article you mention, I would suggest it would be more accurate if named Marine Protector class coastal patrol boat. The appropriate infobox template would be the subsection of Template:Infobox Ship Begin/doc labeled 'Full code for ship classes'. If you run into any difficulties (moving pages and filling out infoboxes is not for the faint of heart), feel free to drop me a note. Thanks for your help! Maralia (talk) 21:51, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
Glad to be of service. The Coast Guard's official ship class pages are pretty sparse; as a Coast Guard webmaster for a couple of cutters and stations, I'm going to link to the Wikipedia entry for the ship classes rather than the USCG.mil pages. The wiki version is much more informative. I'll let you know if I run into any issues or questions. Thanks -- and feel free to tell me if I do anything wrong or untoward! :) Cutteragent (talk) 01:43, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Adding a "smallboat" field

In the USCG, the cutter's smallboat is a standard item, and has it's own characteristics. Am I allowed to make a new field in InfoShips called "smallboat type="? Thanks! Cutteragent (talk) 02:02, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

I would suggest using the "Ship boats=" field for that; the display text is "Boats and landing craft carried:". Would that suffice? Maralia (talk) 02:10, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
Yes, that works fine. Just missed seeing that field...thanks! Cutteragent (talk) 14:15, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for tidying up the BH&R FAC. naerii 15:10, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

No problem. Gimmebot will do all the moving, clearing, and articlehistory stuff if the {{fac}} tag is still on the article talk page, though, so you might want to just leave it on if you run into the same situation again. Maralia (talk) 15:41, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
Hey ! I realized my sandbox instructions hadn't been updated to include full (new) tagging info, fixed that to include diff and by whom. Also, if you move an already archived file to the FAC archives, GimmeBot 1) won't be triggered, and 2) gets messed up :-) So, you have to all of it manually, or none of it manually. If you've moved the file to archive already, then you have to do all of it manually. Good practice :-) Thanks, Maralia! And thanks also for the ongoing updates to make my sandbox "more better". SandyGeorgia (Talk) 16:06, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Copyediting

Can you check my sandbox (User:FullMetal Falcon/sandbox) to see if any further copyediting is needed of the Olympic material above the F-Zero stuff? « ₣M₣ » 17:57, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi; have we met? Or perhaps someone suggested me as a copyeditor? I'm a little confused by your asking me to copyedit a sandbox version, too, because Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is at FAC. I'm heading out for the afternoon but I'll try to help later. Could you explain what's going on with the sandbox version? Thanks. Maralia (talk) 18:24, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
It wasn't a suggestion, I just so happen to find you through Wii Sport's FAC. Sorry, disregard the sandbox I forgot the majority of the changes were already applied to the article. :P Your help would be much appreciated. « ₣M₣ » 02:33, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Gimmebotification

Maralia, in Gimmetrow's upcoming absence, I was thinking of "testing the system", by going back to the way it was done in the "olden days"; that is, rather than doing all the botification manually,

when a FAC/FAR closes, we would just replace on the talk page
{{FAC}} with {{featured}} or {{facfailed}}, and
{{FAR}} with {{FARpassed}} or {{FormerFA2}}.

FARCs are a bit tricker, because there may be no regular editors motivated to do the rest, so we also have to remove the star from the article and remove the talk page Project assessments.

The idea then is to leave the rest (moving pages to archive, tagging them closed, updating articlehistory, etc.) until Gimmetrow gets back, and see if GimmeBot can then just process through all of them, with the same old caveat that if someone does part of the botification, they have to do it all, or it stalls the bot.

I'm curious to see how the community will deal with this; it's the way it was done in the past, and gradually it has become one person's work. What do you think? Or would you prefer that you and I try to keep up alone? SandyGeorgia (Talk) 19:55, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

I was all prepared to do it manually starting today, but it's up to you. I really don't mind either way. Maralia (talk) 15:46, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
I just found this, so now I'm curious. If you hold off when I promote the next batch, I'm going to partially botify and see if MelonBot can do the final step of building articlehistory. If so, that would save us a lot of work. That is, the trial will be that I will tag the articles closed, move them to archive, update them in archive, place the old template on the talk page, and then ask MelonBot if he's able to build the articlehistory. We'll see :-)) SandyGeorgia (Talk) 01:40, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Re: A question

To be honest this has never been brought up before for the article. Personally I don't care either way; the primary reason that it's using brackets is because the article was originally created that way. Secondly, I think that the inclusion of the brackets is still the most common way of referring to the album – even, say, Amazon doesn't use brackets, in the Product Description, it actually does include the brackets. Last.fm also uses brackets, showing that the album is most commonly used with brackets when played on the computer. I can't accurately recall, but I think that if you pop in the CD into your computer and play the songs, there are brackets? I think that the exclusion of the brackets in some places is for marketing purposes, meaning it's easier to understand without the brackets, as opposed to if the brackets were included then sometimes people might think that it is not actually part of the album title or something. Anyways, that's my reasoning, but definitely feel free to bring it up on the article's talk page if you'd like to, or ask some of the other article's editors like User:Blackngold29. If you get a chance, could you rework this sentence: "To earn money Johnson began stitching books for his father, although he was ill-suited to the work because of his poor eyesight, resulting from his childhood illness" It is missing a coma after "to earn money". However, there are so many phrases and transitions that it seems off. How about "Johnson began stitching books for his father to earn money. However, he was ill-suited for the job because of his poor eye that resulted from his childhood illness"? Thats just a suggestion. I can't seem to get it to work out correctly in my head. Right back at you - it's so great to have someone appreciative of cleanup work, instead of upset that I've been mucking about 'their' article. You did a fine job, really. I notice the article said the ship had been listed on the NRHP; I was able to confirm that using this tool which searches raw NRHP data. I was hoping I'd able to find the NRHP nomination documentation online, but I ran into a brick wall at the NR at every turn. You might try asking User:Doncram for help on that angle. He could also tell you whether it's appropriate to add an NRHP infobox (which is what that tool generates) to the article; it may not be, since the 'site' no longer exists and is presumably delisted. Good luck, and let me know if I can help more. Maralia (talk) 03:42, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
I know how to write, and how to cite, but a lot of the Wikipedia knowledge is material I don't know. Infoboxes? What a great idea! Of course I've seen them on Wikipedia pages, but never thought much about them, nor ever edited one. I think I may have over-cited the article a bit, but I read legal and academic journal articles which are full of cites, so am used to it. I feel badly when I see uncited material in WP, though, someone took the time to write something but we can't verify it... About the NRHP, it was mentioned several times so I feel confident it is true, and it had a backstory, so it seems to be true. I tried to find the Nobska on the NRHP, but indeed as you point out since it/she doesn't exist any more, the ship is not listed. (I am wondering if WP has a convention for feminizing the pronoun of ships....) I'll check out the Elkman.net site. Yeah I'm trying to not be overly possessive since that is not how WP works, but I am very curious to see if people look at the new page and what they do when they do. You cleaned it up, two people rated it and added it to projects, another commented on my talk page, another pointed out there are too many cites a few times on the Nobska talk page. Amazing range of responses!--Wmjames (talk) 16:15, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi. Yobot just runs though Category:2008 deaths using AWB. I forgot to turn-off "bypass redirects". I think this caused the problem in the last 2 cases. I fixed it now. Milhist 0.7 stuff

Thank you ever so much for doing that list. I hope it wasn't tooo much brain damage. I am torn between awarding you a golden sword and a $250,000 annual pension or a different barnstar every day for you and each of your descendants unto three generations. chronic indecision is likely to prevent either becoming a reality.

While I'm here, there's a problem I've been wondering about. This is how to get appropriate Ships articles tagged for Milhist in a low-fuss no-special-drives way.

Anyhow, thanks again for working on the list. --ROGER DAVIES talk 07:40, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

It's not my brain that's suffering—but my poor fingers may not recover. I didn't even have an easy method, not even an app with a concatenate function, so I had to manually type nearly all of the formatting.
I have an idea for a couple angles of attack on the tagging issue, but let's shelve that until after the 0.7 deadline. Maralia (talk) 17:50, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Pardon the intrusion but as I related to Roger earlier, the AWB run I made in late June should have picked up 99% of ship articles that had not been previously tagged. Leaving all ship project templates unassessed allowed others to also assess for Milhist when assessing for Ships. At least that was the plan and I've adhered to adding the Milhist template where required with all the applicable task forces and checklists where needed. I doubt there are many ship articles remaining that aren't tagged for Milhist. --Brad (talk) 18:18, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

Southern Cross Expedition: hidden query

I wrote: "Mill had proposed the success of the expedition..." The source reads: "Dr Mill proposed success to the expedition..." But I agree with you, the wording looks odd. Mill was proposing a toast to the expedition's success, so I've altered it to: "Mill had toasted the success of the expedition..." etc. I think that's better, & thanks for spotting it.
