Cheers!

Oh boy, do I! Been in a long and protracted argument with someone who's English is less than perfect over HMS Zealous (R39) when he was trying to add some points of view. And now another chap, who didn't get the article he wanted deleted seems to be trying to push for it again. Happy days. Lots of love,Benea 21:39, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Not a problem, fixed up and hope you like! HMS Speedy is now a disambig page, and the others have been moved to their launch year as per Colledge. As a bonus I added six other Speedys that have so far been overlooked. Mine's a pint, ta! Kind regards, Benea 22:49, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
You are so bloody fast that you're starting to make me feel incompetent! Maralia 23:04, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
I'm sorry, that's just the way I am. I leap short buildings with a running start in favourable winds, can fire a speeding bullet, and walk on water in indoor swimming pools. Superman, eat your heart out! Benea 23:38, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

You've done a great job copyediting the Edward Low article. Are you available for invitation gigs? :) --Malleus Fatuarum 20:29, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks; I enjoyed it. I am willing to (selectively) take on copyedit jobs. I find that what makes it rewarding for me (i.e. I don't want to die, quit, or kill someone) is a situation with a motivated writer, a topic that doesn't make me snore, and another editor working with me—although 2 out of 3 is workable. Bios and ship-related articles are clear winners for me as far as topical interest goes, but I'm open-minded. Have something specific in mind? Maralia 20:58, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
Yes, thanks very much indeed for the help. Some of the errors I'd missed made me smile, especially this one - [1] ... shows you should never edit yourself! Have an ASCII barnstar! * Neil  20:59, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
Oh come on, 'pirates for children' was WAY funnier! Maralia 21:13, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
It was a close thing.  :) You think there's anything stopping me from trying to get it to featured status? Neil  09:08, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
I have not been through the FA process before, but from the criteria, it's in very good shape. A few things you might want to consider first:
 • You should decide whether to characterize him as 'American' or 'British' or both - you've categorized him as both 'from Boston' and 'from Westminster', but only as an 'English pirate'.
 • I think the Reference format could use some cleanup - I see some authors listed first name last name, and others listed in the reverse order.
 • The term 'Jolly Roger' isn't mentioned until a Reference, and it is not interwiki linked there. It should probably be mentioned in the Flags section.
 • The size the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' picture might benefit from tweaking; on widescreen, it is nearly a paragraph longer than the length of the section it's linked to.
The prose is grammatically correct and very good, but I still see places where we could improve it (hopefully this is not just me being endlessly picky, but rather a sign that we've moved past grammar/accuracy into the art of writing!). It would probably be best for me to leave it alone for a few days, though, and come back when it's not so fresh in my mind. Maralia 19:18, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
I've made the changes you suggested, and have just submitted it for FAC - we shall see! Neil  09:53, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
I'm about to start a GA review of Sir John Brunner. Would you care to take a look at that? No problem if not. --Malleus Fatuarum 15:25, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

F3 (ship) class

Hi, and thanks for your comments about the F3 (ship) page. I was intending to ultimately redirect and rework the page to a new one, using whatever name NCL decides to officially call her, and filling in all of the missing data as it is made public. However, I see that there are several pages on Wikipedia that specifically address classes of ships, i.e. the Sovereign class of RCCL. With that in mind, I have no objection to you renaming the F3 (ship) page and reworking whatever is appropriate therein. Bear in mind, that NCL may replace the F3 moniker with something more marketable. For example, their recently launched Norwegian Gem is the last of the Jewel class of ships. Which reminds me that the former needs to be updated to represent her launch and other details, while the latter is not yet a page on Wikipedia, but one that I'd be happy to work on. --OneCyclone 19:57, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

It means that ,since battlecruiser SMS Goeben was present in Turkey, Malta defenders simulated the return in action of those powerful guns, to defend Malta by eventual incursions. It was fiction, but as psicological side it worked: they were 100 t guns since 1884, and Malteses could liked the idea of being defended by this beasts. Even if Goeben had no need to close enough to be eventually stroke by their shells.Such things happens in wars.--Stefanomencarelli 20:34, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

SS Christopher Columbus failed a GA nom

Hi... this request would be if you're not too busy with other stuff.. Since you've helped improve the article, and since you had some commentary about referencing which seems to possibly be in conflict with the GA review on the talk, I'd appreciate any input you might have, from addressing points raised, up to and including working with me to correct any and all of them. I don't agree with all of the points but do think some of the points are worth addressing. Thanks. ++Lar: t/c 19:22, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

While the reviewer does have some good points, I take issue with this:

The article fails to provide the bare minimum of inline citations; one at the end of each paragraph and for quotations.

because it is in direct conflict with this quote from the Good article criteria

at minimum, provides in-line citations from reliable sources for direct quotations, statistics, published opinion, counter-intuitive or controversial statements that are challenged or likely to be challenged, and contentious material relating to living persons

A requirement of "one at the end of each paragraph" is not even demanded by FA criteria. Argh. I'll jump into this after I take a bit of time to blow off steam. Maralia 20:24, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Ships within lists of National Historic Landmarks

Thanks for the pointer on using the USS template for ship names. I appreciate your meticulousity! I added it to my "recipe"/tip sheet on editing National Historic Landmarks / National Register of Historic Places articles, currently at User:Doncram/Recipe, and I will apply it myself. In that "recipe", by the way, I provide some instruction on getting to the National Park Service documents (text and photo sets) for sites that are NHLs. There is good stuff there for many ships and shipwrecks (that are NHLs), you might want to know about that source. I have been adding that source to many ship and shipwreck pages in states that I have covered. For example, I just added a link to the 13 photo set available for the USS North Carolina article (for that one, oddly, just the photo set not the usual NRHP text write-up was available). Best regards, doncram 18:26, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip about looking up NHLs. I had noticed a few months ago that some of the articles on NHL shipwrecks in Florida were really woefully incomplete; now, if I ever get the time, I'll know where to start. Appreciate it! Maralia 18:53, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

Ships? Cool!

Hey Maralia, it's interesting that you did a minor edit to Alice Bailey and also have an interest in ships. Well, interesting to me, at least, because a while back I created SS City of Everett, and would love to have a ship fan take a look. I'm not into ships much, but I saw a reference to that boat in the whaleback article or something, and, given the "firsts" she accomplished, I thought she deserved her own article. I found what I could on the 'net, but I wonder if anyone with some ref books on ships might dig out more info, especially any more details about how she was lost. I've never created a ship article so I probably formatted it wrong, too. Of course, maybe you hate steamships or something, I dunno... but if you feel like having a look, that would be nice. Thanks for your fix on AAB, btw. :) Eaglizard 21:30, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the note. I read Alice Bailey after it was mentioned in some AN/I dispute, I think. I'd be glad to look at SS City of Everett. In a coincidence that is really quite spooky, I've recently been helping with the FAC SS Christopher Columbus, another whaleback. Shiver. Maralia 21:46, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
I've done a quick copyedit and added some information & sources about a 1905 collision & the Republic disaster. I noticed that the article on RMS Republic entirely lacks information concerning her Captain's repeated refusal of assistance, ostensibly to save money. Guess I have more work! Maralia 16:54, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
Ah, you want coincidence? I now recall the reason I created the Everett article in the first place was 'cause I noticed (and fixed) the Columbus article stated the Everett "foundered shortly after she was built" when I'd just read in another article that she was the first US SS to circumnavigate. A little research prompted me to create that article. (I also did some quick copyedits to Columbus, back around the end of Aug.) Anyways, excellent addition. The rewrite on the Republic incident is excellent (I did try to clarify the "greed" angle a bit though). Thanks for your help! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Eaglizard (talkcontribs) 19:41, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

No problem; I enjoyed it (well, most of it!). Thanks for not throwing your hands up when I kept coming up with more content while we were so close to the end :) Maralia 02:45, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
So how close to FAC do you think it is? I've never put an article up for FA so am unsure... ++Lar: t/c 19:25, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
I reread it earlier this morning—after intentionally staying away from it for a bit, for reasons probably obvious—and I did find a few specific issues (all minor):
 • "livery" is never interwiki linked or explained. Further, her original white livery is never mentioned in the text (only in the caption), so the later livery change (which is mentioned) is confusing.
 • "steam pipe disconnection while under way" is not incorrect, but I prefer the equally correct (and easier to parse) "while underway".
 • "while tugs were maneuvering her to her dock" is awkward phrasing. Not to confuse things further, but in trying to rephrase it, I reread the references for the accident, and it appears to me that she was being towed out of dock. Can you recheck and see what you think?
 • Her radio was used to help rescue passengers (along with the Chicago)" is not what you intended; she didn't rescue the Chicago :) How about "Columbus and the SS Chicago used radio to coordinate the joint rescue of 200 passengers from the disabled Goodrich liner City of Racine in June 1909."
There were a handful of other places where the phrasing set off my internal FAC-o-meter; I'll give it another read later tonight when things are quiet enough around here to focus. Maralia 20:56, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. These are good suggestions, s'pose they ought to be moved to the article talk page :) ++Lar: t/c 01:50, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Ice cream cakes rule—we had one for my son's 3rd birthday a few days ago—but be sure to get the kind with crunchy stuff between 'layers' instead of regular cake; that stuff gets soggy. Maralia 18:20, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. Some of the introduced wording was just ludicrous; we are hardly describing some issue where sources and points of view differ greatly, so it served no purpose and just weakened the prose. Your post (from two days ago, not two weeks ago as I interpreted from the above!) wasn't ignored; I missed it, probably due to all the categorization-debate edits to the project talk page. My apologies. The last several updates have been at two-week intervals, which seemed a reasonable schedule now that we're mostly done. This would make it 'due' today. The bot that updates statistics hasn't run since the 12th, so I've prompted it to run now. Normally, if the bot had been running regularly, all you'd need to do is visit Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Ships articles by quality statistics to see the current numbers, then add a column in the table on our talk page. The bot has started, but it may be an hour or so before it gives us updated numbers to work with. Maralia 15:58, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for catching that, perhaps I shouldn't post immediately after I wake up.-MBK004 16:12, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

I just wanted to make sure if I had assumed incorrectly, or it was another glitch with my email. Thanks. Parsecboy (talk) 15:33, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

I did send one; I got the confirmation copy on my end, so it sounds like your email glitched. I'll resend. Maralia (talk) 16:08, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

RfA thanks

Just wanted to say thanks for supporting me! Please find your thank you card here, should you wish to see it. I'm honored to have received your support, and thank you for the kind words in your support vote. All the best, ~Eliz81(C) 02:24, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

Jinx!

On HMS Loch Achray (K426). An edit conflict. What are the odds? Benea (talk) 18:57, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

Ha! I think you owe me a beer :) Maralia (talk) 19:20, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
Only fair! Arrgh, I've just cleaned up HMS Bulldog (A317), but I've suddenly realised that the creator didn't know that HMS Bulldog (H317) already existed. Hmmm, what do you think I should do. (Sorry for not replying earlier, but I was invited out drinking. Don't worry, I had one for you!) ttfn, Benea (talk) 01:03, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
Doh! Well it could go either way; A because that was most of its career, or H because that was most recent. I'd probably go with H. As far as your being out drinking when I was on here telling you that you owe me a beer - shameful. Maralia (talk) 01:56, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
P.S. - Take a look at USS Lady Prevost and see if you can scrape up anything about her (brief) former life as HMS Lady Prevost? Maralia (talk) 01:58, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
Hmmm you've got a tricky one there. Trouble is there's not much on her that I can find that's not in the article. Just another small ship amongst thousands at the time I suppose. My sources agree with what's already there, with the exception of quoting her as carrying 12 guns (almost certainly this means as built, but was probably armed with another before the engagement so no real trouble there) but the date of launch is exactly given as 13 July 1812, rather than the 1810 quoted in the article. I'd be inclined to trust my source on this (the venerable Colledge), but I'm not sure where the other sources (I can only find one that says 1810 online so far) are getting the earlier date from, so I think I'll hang fire on that for now.
Incidentally, I finally plumped for A, because thee other three ships of the class were under that pennant, but then I found we had not one but two of her sister - HMS Beagle (A319) and HMS Beagle (H319)! Arrrgh, but I think that's all sorted now (fingers crossed). Indeed, don't worry, I paid for it by having cider after wine. What was I thinking! Ow my head! ta ta, Benea (talk) 18:48, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
As to the launch date for Lady Prevost, I had one source (DANFS) that said 1810, and another (http://www.hhpl.on.ca/GreatLakes/Documents/shiplists/macpherson.htm, a list compiled from a book) that said 13 July 1812. For lack of anything more reliable, I went with DANFS, the known evil, if you will. Please do change the date & cite Colledge. And why oh why would you drink cider after wine? Don't they teach anything in college anymore? :) Maralia (talk) 20:36, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

Happy Thanksgiving etc

A bit late, I know, but it takes time for the penny to drop on this side of the puddle ...

Otherwise, as you've probably noticed Jacky Fisher is on hold. I got stalled on research (waiting for books) and other things (like Hamlet) took over. I'll return to Fisher later now I have the material.

I see, understandably, that your interest has waned in Tag & Assess 2007. Can I persuade you to at least get your tally to 2,000 so you can get the barnstar out of it? I know that this wasn't your primary motivation but I'd like to see you rewarded.

Finally, I've started working on a sortable list of common words requiring transmogrification into other English spelling variants. It covers all (plus some) of the main variants I've encountered on Wikipedia so far. In embryonic form, it's here. Could you please take a look and comment? The idea is to de-mystify EngVar conversion, as I'm sure fear of the unknown is the root cause of many disputes.

--ROGER DAVIES talk 12:43, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the Thanksgiving wishes. As to the others:
 • Happy to hear Jackie Fisher will be moving along again—I'll gladly jump right back in!
 • Ah, assessments. I could have done a much better job for your assessment project if I hadn't just done like 3,000 for my project. Bad timing! I did all of that manually, and finally lost my marbles; if I can get a script working, I'll try to crank out some more.
 • The EngVar list looks fascinating! I'll see what I can come up with. Ten years of working for Lebanese folks whose linguistic progression was Arabic->French->British English->American English gave me plenty of opportunities to observe the vagaries of American English :) Maralia (talk) 14:53, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

Belarus FAC

I looked at the MoS issues that you had mentioned nearly a month ago. Honestly, I am still lost. Can you provide me examples from the article of Belarus that deal with "Words as words"? The foreign words are being addressed by other editors who have a clue on what it is about, since I'm lost. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 04:08, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

I'm glad to hear you're back working on it again. I'd be glad to help clean up that section; might take me a day or so, as I need to re-read MOS to make sure I get it right. Maralia 04:32, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
If I understood it correctly, I would have done it. However, the MoS just became very, very confusing. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 04:57, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
Hi! I see that you're actively involved in c/e this article. Could you edit the comments section at the League of Copy-Editors Request page to that effect, so that others will know it's in progress, rather than being an open reqeust? Thanks! The problem with Category:Fictional and Non-Fictional Heroines is that categorizing anyone as a hero is inherently subjective. As someone else said in the CfD, one man's hero is another man's villain—as such, a neutral assessment of 'heroism' cannot really be made, rendering the word insufficiently defining for a category. Stephen Mallory copyedit

Just wanted to drop a quick note to say you did a great job with copyediting at Stephen Mallory the other day. I wish there were more editors like you on wikipedia. (c; — Eric Herboso 22:44, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your very kind comment. It will help fortify me in my epic battle to copyedit the very good—but extremely long— Hindu-German Conspiracy. If more people made an effort to offer encouragement as you've done here, there probably would be more editors 'like me' on wikipedia. Keep it up! Maralia (talk) 23:28, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

Issues with warship template

I've done a little work on the warship issue, but I've run into some problems. First, the good news:

Template usage Equivalent wikicode Final result
USS Enterprise (CVN-65) User:TomTheHand/warship
HMCS Kootenay User:TomTheHand/warship
Ottawa User:TomTheHand/warship
Essentially, if you supply it with a prefix, ship name, and classification symbol, you can then use the same spiffy output configuration options as in USS.
Now, the bad news:
Template usage Equivalent wikicode Final result
Japanese battleship Yamato (2) User:TomTheHand/warship
Yamato User:TomTheHand/warship
You can't just supply it with a prefix, a ship name, and an output type. The third parameter you pass in is interpreted as the classification symbol. You've got to specifically set the fourth parameter (output type). I'd like for it to accept something more intuitive, like disp=2, but I'm not sure how to do that while still making it automatically understand four parameters if you supply it that way. International Centers of Commerce

Hey,

I noticed that you had voted for the deletion of the International Centers of Commerce template because you felt it was an advertisement. I just want to let you know that I have changed the text so that the template does not appear like an advertisement, but rather an informational template to tell people about the top 10 centers of financial flow. The template now does not show "Mastercard Worldwide" on it, but rather says source. I hope you will change your mind and your vote on the Templates for deletion: International Centers of Commerce

RMS Strathaird

Thanks for the note and the tidy. I don't think I'm going to make a habit of ship articles, but Strathaird fills in a potential redlink in what the Cricket Project hopes will be its first featured topic, a series of articles related to the 1948 Australian tour of England, its personalities and the matches played. Anyway, it's fun to get out into an area I know absolutely nothing about occasionally, and I found it interesting stuff. It's also nice to go into an area where "mid-importance" articles are still there to be written: in cricket, most of them have already been done! Johnlp (talk) 12:29, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
