Orphaned non-free image File:Seal of Kerala.svg

Thanks for uploading File:Seal of Kerala.svg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 11:24, 24 April 2018 (UTC)

Information

Hello,

I do not know why I was blocked for 30 days, I uploaded an image citing sources in the same way as this one (https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ficheiro:Incredibles2.png#mw-jump-to-license) and even then the image was deleted and I was blocked, I did not understand, because I used the same source of the image. Since it happened, I wanted to know how do I send an image that has copyright.

Best regards, Valadares GV (talk) 04:26, 7 June 2018 (UTC)

@Valadares GV: Commons has different rules for which files can be uploaded. We don't accept "fair use" copyrighted material. We explicitly explained this via multiple messages on your talk page, all of which have Portuguese translations if you're confued. Magog the Ogre (tc) 04:27, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

c:File:StepUpHighWater.png

I had few questions about why the title card image I had uploaded to Wikipedia proper was eligible to be uploaded to commons. The templates: Template:Non-free title-card and Template:Non-free use rationale title-card would seem to suggest that screenshots of title screens/cards are non-free. Just looking for clarity on the matter. Respectfully, BoogerD (talk) 19:30, 9 June 2018 (UTC)

@BoogerD: yes, normally screenshots are unfree. But in this case we can cheat with a little doctrine known as threshold of originality. In essence, if a screenshot is so simple that it shows no creativity, then it can't be copyrighted. And that image is only simple lettering. Magog the Ogre (tc) 03:54, 10 June 2018 (UTC)
Hmmm. Seems a little arbitrary I must admit. I suppose it would be up to an individual to determine whether or not something can be copyrighted and an other individual to determine whether they were right. I'd have assumed a font or someone's original graphic design would be copyrightable. No matter though. C'est la vie. Respectfully, BoogerD (talk) 04:13, 10 June 2018 (UTC)

File:MLB Blackout Areas.png

Just a suggestion... is it possible to update the map? The Marlins switched their name from "Florida Marlins" to "Miami Marlins" a few years ago, but the map still says "Florida" to show the Marlins' blackout region, rather than "Miami". Thanks, Dolfinz1972 (talk) 04:28, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

@Dolfinz1972: I'll take a look at it shortly. Magog the Ogre (tc) 04:25, 13 June 2018 (UTC)
@Dolfinz1972: I had this all worked up, but it looks like the MLB has changed their process, and decides along a 5-digit zip code, not just a 3-digit zip code basis like before. So the map is wrong in a bunch of places. This is going to take a while to piece together. Magog the Ogre (tc) 05:13, 14 June 2018 (UTC)
@Dolfinz1972: if you want to spend a week creating a ZCTA-5 map, or if you have a subscription to ArcGis, feel free. I'll provide the data for you. But this is too much effort for me. Magog the Ogre (tc) 05:49, 15 June 2018 (UTC)
@Dolfinz1972: actually give me a few more days. I think I can teach myself how to use QGIS. Magog the Ogre (tc) 02:54, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

Socking here and at Commons

I just blocked Beefeeb99 (talk · contribs · count) and Wikieditor9994 (talk · contribs · count). EditChamp67 (talk · contribs · count) is stale at en.wiki but active at Commmons. Beefeeb99 is currently blocked on Commons until December 28, 2018. I'm fairly certain that EditChamp67 is a sock of Beefeeb99 but cannot check. I nominated one of EditChamp67's uploads (Josh Hawley) for deletion at Commons but not the others. I have removed at least some of the images from en.wiki articles. You might want to look at taking action at Commons. Thanks.--Bbb23 (talk) 12:37, 12 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi Magog the Ogre. You previously deleted this user page per WP:U5. Can you tell if this latest version is the same or might it be a draft for a future article? If it's the latter, then the editor's choice of username might indicate WP:AUTO and a WP:COI. The username itself might also be a problem per WP:IMPERSONATE. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:34, 1 August 2018 (UTC)

@Marchjuly: it probably qualifies as U5, but if a user recreates content of decent quality, I prefer to bring to DR just in case. I sent it to MFD. Magog the Ogre (tc) 20:14, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for taking a look at it. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:17, 13 August 2018 (UTC)

File:360px-Henry-E-Erwin.png

You deleted this per WP:F8. The filename suggests that this is a downscaled copy of a file named "File:Henry-E-Erwin.png" on some Mediawiki wiki. Could you check if it's the same image as the deleted file File:Henry-E-Erwin.png? --Stefan2 (talk) 12:32, 26 August 2018 (UTC)

@Trekphiler: yeah sorry for the late tagging but the image is out of compliance if the license requires attribution. Magog the Ogre (tc) 18:24, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

Question about a deletion

Hey Magog the Ogre, two years ago you deleted File:EricBuchman.jpg. I am not granted to see the old license but I am pretty sure it is the same as in File:Antoine Saout.jpg. The source is not available anymore but the picture was correct licensed when it was uploaded. So please check the picture of Buchman again and restore it if I am right. Greetings, [[de:Benutzer:M-B|M-B]] (talk) 13:38, 7 October 2018 (UTC)

@M-B: I did not delete it. INeverCry deleted it. However, that admin is no longer around, and the deletion was unwise, so I've restored it. Magog the Ogre (tc) 02:47, 8 October 2018 (UTC)
Thank you! Can you please do the same for File:Cliff Joesphy (johnnybax).jpg and File:Ram Vaswani.jpg? -- [[de:Benutzer:M-B|M-B]] (talk) 15:17, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

Improper deletions

Hi Magog. You are improperly deleting numerous patent drawing images that I posted to the commons. It would appear that you based the deletions on the assumption that their inclusion in the commons violates copyrights. It does not. Please restore them. —Catsquisher (talk) 18:36, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

@Catsquisher: we amended the template on Commons and English Wikipedia per this discussion: c:Commons:Deletion requests/Template:PD-US-patent-no notice. You will notice that c:Template:PD-US-patent now takes the position that most patents after 1989 are copyrightable. Magog the Ogre (tc) 21:52, 8 October 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply, Magog. Please note that the discussion you reference indicates that the ability of an author/inventor to maintain a copyright on an application or patent applies only to design patents, not utility patents. All of the images I posted are for utility patents. Again, I request that you restore the deleted images. —Catsquisher (talk) 00:57, 9 October 2018 (UTC)
@Catsquisher: you bring up a well researched point. But I would prefer any major change like this go through community discussion. Could you please bring your request to c:Commons:Undeletion requests? Thanks. Magog the Ogre (tc) 02:11, 9 October 2018 (UTC)
Have done so per your request. —Catsquisher (talk) 03:26, 9 October 2018 (UTC)
Also, please see c:COM:Village pump/Copyright#Reproductions_of_patent_text_and_illustrationsCatsquisher (talk) 20:27, 9 October 2018 (UTC)
Hi Magog. This morning User:Fastily deleted one of my images File:Hydril_Compact_BOP_Patent.jpg in spite of the ongoing debate regarding the use of patent drawings. His talk page says "Due to RL commitments I'm going to be intermittently offline. If you came here regarding a deletion, then please ask another admin or use WP:REFUND." My effort to preserve images that I (and others) have properly uploaded is proving to be very time consuming. Please advise. —Catsquisher (talk) 18:59, 15 October 2018 (UTC)
@Catsquisher: politics on Wiki projects are a lot like a court of law: they can be very exhausting. Nonetheless, please be patient; if the discussion ascertains that the images are free, everything will be properly restored. Magog the Ogre (tc) 23:01, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. I'll try my best to be patient. —Catsquisher (talk) 14:01, 17 October 2018 (UTC)
@Catsquisher: am I right this hasn't been closed by an administrator yet? I'm willing to take on the task but I can't promise how I'll decide once I read the evidence. Magog the Ogre (tc) 00:20, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
Hi Magog. If you are referring to the discussion on Wikimedia, c:COM:Village pump/Copyright#Reproductions_of_patent_text_and_illustrations, it has not been closed. So far a couple of users have stated support for correcting the licensing templates and restoring deleted patent image files. No promises from you are needed or requested, but I would appreciate you weighing in on that discussion, one way or another (beyond the question of deletion notifications). Cheers —Catsquisher (talk) 21:13, 26 October 2018 (UTC)

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. Pics of Diplomat Hotel by Patrick Roque

Hello @Magog! With regards to the ff. Pictures of Diplomat Hotel by Patrick Roque:

I find these pictures nothing wrong with regards to the issue of Freedom of Panorama in the Philippines. Despite the country's strict but vague provisions on the copyrights of static structures esp. monuments and modern buildings, there's a condition that 50 years after the death of the architect or engineer, the structure becomes automatically public domain. My strongest basis is here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Undeletion_requests/Archive/2017-01#File:Rizal_Monument.jpg

In the article the hotel's architect was Roque Ruano, who died in 1935, so this haunted building is in public domain since 1985. I tried to transfer the said pictures to WikiCommons using "Commonshelper" to make them available to Tagalog Wikipedia, however the transfer was denied for some automated reason. Can you please help ne regarding this matter? Please notify me if you reply. Thanks! :-) JWilz12345 (talk) 12:40, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

@JWilz12345: transfer scripts recognize the template and will refuse to do the transfer. You have to remove the template then do the transfer. However, the template is important, as WP:CSD#F8 states that if someone adds the template, the file is no longer eligible for speedy deletion. As such, you should restore it when you're done, and then nominate for deletion through FFD if you feel that the local file should be deleted over the uploader's concerns. Magog the Ogre (tc) 18:52, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
@Magog the Ogre: I understand. However, I found a more easier way to transfer files to Commons: via importing the file itself. Although slightly risky (in my own opinion, since it's my first time to use it), it is much easier and still preserves the files' desription page. Afterwards I put the "NowCommons" template. Please notify me once again for your insights or reply. Thanks again!JWilz12345 (talk) 16:50, 1 April 2019 (UTC)
Of course, I need to remove the template (but still considering the principles and exceptions of the vague FOP rule in the country). But I also remembered what I read at Wikipedia:Moving files to Commons. Commonshelper's major disadvantage is that it "poorly" generates Wikitext. The "FileImporter" is more seamless, and has safety net if it detects a similar or duplicate file already existing at WikiCommons.JWilz12345 (talk) 17:00, 1 April 2019 (UTC)
@JWilz12345: they all do a poor job in some way or another. CommonsHelper (which my bot automatically cleans up) or FileExporter (available in the Beta preferences) probably do it best. Neither will transfer the file if it has that template, though. Magog the Ogre (tc) 22:59, 1 April 2019 (UTC)

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Reversions

Hey, I reverted your deletion of a couple of photos (File:SMS Nassau NH 46827.jpg and File:SMS Nassau NH 46828.jpg) - the photos are incorrectly licensed on Commons and shouldn't be there based on the information we currently have. That's why they're uploaded locally to en.wiki. Thanks. Parsecboy (talk) 14:05, 5 June 2019 (UTC)

@Parsecboy: we have the author, though, so they aren't incorrectly licensed, unless I'm missing something. Magog the Ogre (tc) 20:15, 5 June 2019 (UTC)
Indeed you are - the source doesn't credit the author claimed on Commons (and while it might well be Renard who took the photos, we don't know, and the uploader has made the same assumption when it clearly wasn't Renard [I can't bring the specific upload to mind, but it was clearly watermarked with M. L. Carsten's logo], so I wouldn't trust his assumption ). Parsecboy (talk) 20:21, 5 June 2019 (UTC)
@Parsecboy: that's reasonable. May I suggest putting this information explicitly in the Keep Local field so that administrators (including I) don't make this mistake in the future. Magog the Ogre (tc) 20:23, 5 June 2019 (UTC)
Good idea - I've added a note to that effect. Parsecboy (talk) 20:36, 5 June 2019 (UTC)

File:Rovio Entertainment logo.svg

Can you return the aforementioned file so that I can fix its licensing to {{PD-ineligible-USonly }}, which is what Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2019 June 25#File:Rovio Entertainment logo.svg was headed for? The identical file on Commons has been nominated for deletion by me, whch means that F8 is no longer met. Thanks! – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 11:44, 26 June 2019 (UTC)

Sarnia from space

I see you looked at this image. The speedy delete is wonky because if you look at the editors text you'll see the file which is here. It's a better quality image, and is not "non-free". Cheers. Magnolia677 (talk) 22:08, 25 June 2019 (UTC)

@Magnolia677: thanks. If it's not under the same name, and it isn't a bit-for-bit copy, then you (the person who tagged the page) have to specify the other file name on Commons. Magog the Ogre (tc) 22:59, 25 June 2019 (UTC)
Should I re-speedy delete the non-free image? Magnolia677 (talk) 23:04, 25 June 2019 (UTC)
@Magnolia677: No, you never addressed the issue I brought up. And they weren't actually the same image anyway so it doesn't qualify for speedy deletion. Magog the Ogre (tc) 02:54, 26 June 2019 (UTC)
I already re-speedied the non-free file, but if it needs to be exact then it won't qualify. I used the drop-down menu to tag the file for speedy delete, and even though I entered the file name I used on the Commons, it defaulted to the exact same file name used on the non-free file. I'll just leave it. Thanks. Magnolia677 (talk) 09:49, 26 June 2019 (UTC)
@Magnolia677: intereseting, that might be worth reporting to WT:TW. Anyway, per WP:CSD#F8, it must be of the same format and an exact duplicate or a scaled down exact duplicate. If it's not, then it can get tagged with replaceable fair use, or just a standard FFD. Anyway you did fine, you just chose the wrong option. Also, I was admittedly grumpy yesterday so I was kind of an ass about it.   That's on me, not you. Magog the Ogre (tc) 21:18, 26 June 2019 (UTC)
It's all good. And thanks for adding the new photo to the Sarnia article. Cheers! Magnolia677 (talk) 23:16, 26 June 2019 (UTC)

Reports

Please handle some reports on AIV before they get stale. 99.53.112.186 (talk) 21:19, 14 July 2019 (UTC)

I would take a second look at those bot-reported users you declines because even though they may not have made vandalism edits, they may have attempted to do so, which I think they did. 99.53.112.186 (talk) 22:19, 14 July 2019 (UTC)
One of the reports was for a user with only a single edit, the other I declined below, and the last report was for you. Am I missing something? Magog the Ogre (tc) 22:22, 14 July 2019 (UTC)
You have to look at the filter logs for edits that were filtered out. (talk • contribs • logs • filter log • block log)99.53.112.186 (talk) 22:22, 14 July 2019 (UTC)

I just discovered that a picture is missing

from the talk page of Mayan Revival architecture. When I tried to track it down, as far as I could get is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Upload?wpDestFile=Modern_Mexican_Maya_Revival_architecture.jpg here. I am pretty sure that the picture was one I took and this link seems to suggest that it is in Commons, but no luck there either. Can you help me? Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 15:29, 25 August 2019 (UTC)

@Carptrash: that is c:File:Modern Mexican Maya Revival architecture.jpg. @Secondarywaltz and Ronhjones: why are you tagging valid photographs with usage on our wikis from long-time trusted contributors as missing permission? @Racconish: why are you deleting valid photographs without checking that the tag was valid? Mediocrity from everyone here, frankly. Magog the Ogre (tc) 15:38, 25 August 2019 (UTC)
Thank you for that quick turn around. The only name I saw on the "paper trail" was yours, so . . .... I came here. it is funny (if you have a minute) because I was talking, and picturing Modern Mexican Maya Revival architecture, basically tourist stuff, and now that is an issue of that showing up, and being removed from the article. Carptrash (talk) 15:46, 25 August 2019 (UTC)
@Carptrash: simply upload it again. The problem was in the transfer to Commons. That should be easy for you to do. Secondarywaltz (talk) 15:50, 25 August 2019 (UTC)
Restored with apologies. — Racconish💬 15:55, 25 August 2019 (UTC)
FYI: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:I_love_rpgs that editor is now blocked. Secondarywaltz (talk) 15:56, 25 August 2019 (UTC)
I also just uploaded it, so it is lurking around in 2 versions now. Thanks, As far as "easy to do" (reloading it) that is not always the case. I have thousands of pictures, finding 1 is not always easy. My house was once hit by lightning, frying my computer and thousands more pictures, it could have been there. To assume @Secondarywaltz: that something should be easy for someone else to do is not always a good idea. But thanks for your prompt actions. Carptrash (talk) 16:04, 25 August 2019 (UTC)

Please remove the Wiki commons ban

Why forbid me? Can you remove the ban so I can post pictures? Thank you Taitamtinh (talk) 11:24, 27 August 2019 (UTC)

@Taitamtinh: I blocked your account because you continue to upload non-free pictures after many warnings. Magog the Ogre (tc) 21:29, 27 August 2019 (UTC)
I'm sorry. I promise not to be like that anymore. You removed the ban for me. I have some photos to update. thank you Taitamtinh (talk) 01:04, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
@Taitamtinh: I will unblock your account on the condition you explain to me what you did wrong, and how you will take care not to do it again. Magog the Ogre (tc) 01:24, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
Sorry. There is content that I do not know clearly, so I posted some wrong pictures. Some of the content I have not tested carefully should just happen like that. Hope you sympathize and forgive me. I promise to pay attention to the images next time. I thank you. Taitamtinh (talk) 10:28, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
Hope you can remove the ban and facilitate me. I didn't mean to go against the rules. I will learn from experience and seriously review to contribute in accordance with wiki commons. Sincerely thank you very much. Taitamtinh (talk) 10:30, 28 August 2019 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of File:SWAYAM-Wikifile.pdf

Hello This is regarding deleted file SWAYAMWiki. I had uploaded it as I wanted to show how to upload a pdf file in wikipedia. I could not understand teh reason of deletion. I missed to add the open license but when i visited the file page to update the license , it was deleted. Please help in understanding the reason. Nisharavindra (talk) 12:39, 29 September 2019 (UTC)

Nisharavindra, your PDF was deleted under the F10 criteria for speedy deletion, which means that it was uploaded to Wikipedia but has no obvious future use; sound, image, and video are really the main filetypes that are acceptable for upload, though in rare cases a PDF may be of use. @Spinningspark: sorry, it was deleted in error. Magog the Ogre (tc) 21:41, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

commons issue

Hi Magog, could you have a quick look at this section and the attending "ban" subthread? There are some issues which may pertain to commons, and I think you're an admin there as well. Thank you. — Ched (talk) 22:51, 3 November 2019 (UTC)

Images moved from en.Wikipedia to Commons

Thanks for returning the two images to en.WP. Over the years, I have seen many images moved to Commons incorrectly, deleted from en.Wikipedia, then deleted from Commons, and the image is then lost! I hope there is now some kind of rule at Commons that, before an image is deleted from commons, it should be returned to en.Wikipedia if appropriate. -- Ssilvers (talk) 01:49, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Neith-Nabu's images

Thanks for moving the images - however, your deletion of the originals has affected all of the associated Wikipedia articles. Please can you complete the actions so that images are not lost from pages? Thank you. Neith-Nabu (talk) 09:49, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

@Neith-Nabu: none of your images was lost. What are you referring to? Magog the Ogre (tc) 19:06, 8 November 2019 (UTC)
after your edit several of the images showed as blanks with an "x". That is what I was referring to. It seems to have cleared, though. Neith-Nabu (talk) 21:33, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

@Soibangla: I moved it to Wikimedia Commons where it will be accessible from all projects, including this one. Nothing to worry about. Magog the Ogre (tc) 01:09, 18 December 2019 (UTC)

Procedure for tagging replacded, unused image files

Hi Magog! I wanted to ask about the correct way to deal with superseded image files. Recently, I've been researching American film posters from 1925–1989 to identify ones that are in the public domain. This means I've been replacing hundreds of low-res images held locally on a fair use basis. These are often the same design as the high-res replacements, but just as often they're entirely different—common examples being that a decently high-res version of the same poster isn't available on the web, or the fair-use poster does remain in fact under copyright for some reason (like being an alternate design used outside the US), or the fair-use image is something like a DVD cover.

I was initially tagging the low-res local files with {{di-orphaned fair use}} across the board, but then I was told by someone to use {{ncd}}. To be honest, that person's messages are difficult to parse—I don't really get what they've been trying to tell me, and you can see what I mean if you check the most recent messages on my talk page—but based on WP:MTC my understanding is that it's proper to use {{ncd}} when the replacement is substantially the same image. Since I began using {{ncd}}, there have been a handful of times that you or someone else have reverted my {{ncd}} tags. (Just to be clear, I'm not disputing your reverts at all, just seeking to understand what I should be doing so that I always get it right on the first try and I don't waste your time.) I think your reverts have all or mostly been because the local file formats weren't jpgs and so didn't match the replacement file format, which makes sense to me. However, once or twice I've had {{ncd}} tags reverted because the source was different and therefore the scan was not identical, regardless of whether it was substantially the same poster design.

What I'm wondering is, what should I do to make sure the replaced images are handled correctly? I want to keep my process streamlined so I can concentrate on the worthwhile part (finding and contributing high-resolution free images) and keep the other part (caretaking for the orphaned, replaced files) as efficient and effortless as humanly possible. Honestly, I wouldn't be using {{ncd}} at all if I hadn't been told to do so, and I'd prefer not to use it at all if it's only truly correct in a handful of cases that are rare and would require me to double-check that the sources of both files are identical. I really don't want to waste time checking—they're ending up deleted anyway. I don't want to nominate them for deletion because those seem like needless extra steps for myself and others when speedy deletion seems self-evident to me, and I see no reason to bother transferring low-value weird-name files to Commons just because they're technically public domain. I'd rather go back to using {{di-orphaned fair use}} every time, but for all I know there are other templates out there I don't know about that I should be using instead. Thoughts? —BLZ · talk 04:07, 13 February 2020 (UTC)

Good case in point: I just uploaded The Life of Emile Zola (1937 film poster).jpg to Commons and put it in the infobox at The Life of Emile Zola. The former infobox image, The Life of Emile Zola poster.jpg, is now unused. They're both "the same poster" and they're both jpg, but the old file is clearly cropped (it excludes the margins and everything below the word "Zola"), so it's not "the same image" by that standard. While no specific source is provided for the old poster, it has a very different tint so even at a glance there's no chance it originated from the exact same scan. Sure enough, it was uploaded to Wikipedia in 2006 while the source I used was a 2016 auction. In this situation, what's the right thing to do? —BLZ · talk 04:40, 13 February 2020 (UTC)

@Brandt Luke Zorn: The technical requirements for ncd are here: WP:CSD#F8. Importantly, it must be the same file format. PNGs cannot be replaced by JPGs or vice versa. In these cases, you can usually just nominate the file for deletion or mark as orphaned fair use. Magog the Ogre (tc) 14:51, 16 February 2020 (UTC)

thank you very much! .. File:XBOX SERIES X logo.svg

Hi, File:XBOX SERIES X logo.svg (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) was deleted by you, however, the file was tagged {{keep local}}. Can you please reverse your deletion? Thank you. —Locke Coletc 02:09, 2 March 2020 (UTC)

@Locke Cole: it was not tagged, which is why I deleted it. Magog the Ogre (tc) 01:28, 3 March 2020 (UTC)
I see now another editor, the same one who tagged it as available on Commons, was the one who also removed the tag. Please understand that F8 does not apply in these instances and care should be made to handle situations where an editor maliciously removes the tag to circumvent the keep local directive. —Locke Coletc 01:35, 3 March 2020 (UTC)
@Locke Cole: I understand your frustration but that's an unreasonable request. Magog the Ogre (tc) 00:53, 4 March 2020 (UTC)
