Photo editing

If you agree with my edits, revert to my edits, and say straight out on the talk page that yo agree with my edits. Then the guy forcing his bad version onto the article would have to give up. Not editing (and you not editing either) just allows the guy pushing the bad version to try to claim he has consensus, when he doesn't. DreamGuy 05:47, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

About Wikipedia:Featured_picture_candidates/Lone_Cypress_Sunset

Just wanted to thank you for your helpful comment on my failed FP nomination. Even though you opposed, your suggestions were much more insightful than the other reasons provided and will definitely help me improve in the future. I actually find myself having to agree with your comment, despite being the person who took the picture in the first place. Thanks again, and happy editing. :-) Hersfold (talk/work) 04:22, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Attempt at consensus-building

In an attempt to keep the discussion on the Photo editing talk page in the direction of reaching an agreeable resolution, I have tried to find a slightly different approach. I would really appreciate your constructive criticism on the post that I just made, please see Talk:Photo_editing#Trying_to_establish_some_common_ground. Thanks. -- Alucard (Dr.) | Talk 16:07, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me use your page as a sandbox for this. I hope we can get this thing resolved so we can all move on. -- Alucard (Dr.) | Talk 18:28, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
No probs – thanks for taking up the baton! Your efforts have gone a long way to resolving things. As I see it, although there is already enough of a consensus to leave the section more-or-less as it is, we might as well use the block time to get it right as soon as it's lifted. Good luck! mikaultalk 19:07, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Barnstar08.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. — Carl (CBM · talk) 17:38, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

Graphics Lab Announcement

Attention All Wikigraphists!

As you may or may have not noticed, the Graphics Lab pages have gone under a massive cleanup by User:DTR, User:Rugby471 and various others (sorry if I missed you out). Some of the things that have happened are.

  • All pages in the Graphics Lab have had, where sensible, templates, substituting elements. For example, the main Lab page was a large chunk of around 100 lines of pure code. It was not very easy to edit the main page, so the various sections of it (eg links, welcome) have been separated. Therefore the main page is now only around 20 lines of user friendly text. If you wish to edit the main page, you must look on the main page for the correct template to edit. (Fore example if I wanted to edit the links section, I would go to Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/links and edit the text there). This has been done to all of the pages, in an attempt to make them more user-friendly.

  • As you were notified of early, the Wikigraphist Abilities page has been set up and has been beginning to get populated. If you haven't already setup your own entry, you are advised to go and do so now.

  • Due to a comment from User:DTR. A template for Graphics Lab announcements has been created. It is at Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/announcement. If you ever need to issue a message to Wikigraphists, please use this template in the form

{{Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/announcement|message ~~~~}}

Where message is the announcement you wish to issue.

  • On the Images to Improve Page, an issue was noticed where that when requests were completed, people were adding {{Did}} but forgetting to add <!--werdnabot-archive--&gt so that the request would be archived. Therefore a template has been created (yes another one!) to help with this. When a user creates a new request instead of putting the usual code, they shall put

{{Request Title|title=Lorem Ipsum|done=false}}. Now when a request is completed, all you will have to do is change done to true

done=true

and the template will add the {{did}} template and also <!--werdnabot-archive--> to the title, so it will get archived.

As always, if you experience any issues with the new changes, or are just a bit confused, please don't hesitate to contact me or DTR on our talk pages.

A photo idea for Oak (wine)

Hey Mick, I have an idea for a photo type that I would like to include and I was wondering if you would lend your talents to create a photo demonstrating the color difference in wine that has been oaked fermented versus oak aged. I've been experimenting with Chardonnay since its fairly easy to find both barrel ferm/barrel aged versions noted on the label but my utter and complete lack of photographic skill is not producing anything really useable. I think that such a photo would be a good fit for the Effects on wine section. Now if you don't like Chardonnay, I'm sure we could figure out some red wines that may have noticeable color differences due to oaking. Thanks. AgneCheese/Wine 02:39, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

Great, a legit excuse to open 2 bottles at once! I'll have a word with a tame bodega I use, see what they recommend, and get onto it. --mikaultalk 07:54, 26 October 2007 (UTC)
Heh, well I hope you have fun. I appreciate it. :) AgneCheese/Wine 08:33, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

FP Nomination - Portrait of a Turkish Woman

Hi, thanks for your vote. What do you think the caption should be changed to? And do you think the photo itself is FP worthy? Kitkatcrazy 16:42, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Personally, I like shots of people and I think the encyclopedia is desperately short of them, especially quality ones like yours. I have to say the encyclopedic value of it outside of Turkish people is not its strong point, and even within that article it hasn't really found its place. As a result, you've ended up trying too hard... I think I'm right in saying you placed it at TUrkish people within the last few days, to reinforce the FPC nomination, which is never a good idea. There's a very long discussion on this exact problem on the FPC talk page, if you're interested. This is what I meant by "poorly nominated" (or however I phrased it) on the FPC page for your nom. A lot more care before nominating would have made some difference. Moving it to the Turkish people/phenotypes section would be much better placement, for example. If you forgot all the other articles it would be a stronger nom than spamming everything vaguely related to it. The caption is really the least of its problems! FWIW I'm really not sure if it would pass, all things considered, but it's possible. It's good quality but not exceptional; having said that, as a "people shot" it needn't be so big, and a downsample and "tweak" would certainly help address the few quality issues that it has. Hope that's of some help, anyway. Best wishes, mikaultalk 17:35, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

I'd like to learn your opinion please

Hello, MIckStephenson.Today I took thisImage. IMO this the image is more dramatic and more interesting than  . Could you, please, tell me, if you believe I should nominate   for delisting. Thank you.--Mbz1

Hi Mila. That's quite an angle you have there! Honestly, I think the existing FP is better. I supported it for many qualities which your latest one doesn't have, or has to a lesser degree: a good "pose", primarily; also clearly-defined outline, followed by composition, exposure and sharpness. It's probably not as dramatic as the new one, but drama is just the icing, not the whole cake! Good luck with it, anyway. <edit> - just a thought, but maybe you're not aware of wikipedia picture peer review page, which I'm trying to revive to help out in these circumstances: if you have any doubts about a possible FPC nomination, I would encourage you to post them there first and get a solid start to you FPCs. Let me know what you think! --mikaultalk 08:51, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for the response, Mick. I have not known about picture peer review. I'll consider using this in the feature. You're doing great job there. I agree that FP surfer image has a better quality, than the one I took yesterday. It shows the surfer and even server's maneuver better. It is just that for me the surfing is as much about the wave as it is about the surfer and FP image does not really show the wave. I was not going to nominate the new image before delisting the old one anyway. After reading your response I've decided to let it be. Thank you.--Mbz1 13:16, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

No probs Mick. Yes, you did give it your best shot. Above and beyond, as a matter of fact. I'm happy to withdraw the nomination. Catalan wine

Aww, thanks Agne :)) It's a great article, one of those "I can't believe we didn't already have it" pages. I'll probably add to it as I've just finished fiddling with my harvest shots and I've got some nice autumnal ones of the Catalan vineyards. You seem to be incredibly prolific at the moment; keep up the sterling work! --mikaultalk 17:43, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm studying for my Sommelier exam coming up on the 3rd and writing articles helps me retain the info better. Feel free to replace any of the pics in the article if you have something better. In a lot of cases I just put something there to break up the mass of text. AgneCheese/Wine 19:15, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
Ok will do. I should have that oak aging (wine colour) shot done soon too. As usual, I've got the wine, I just need to remember to shoot it before I drink it.. good luck with the exams :) --mikaultalk 19:37, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Night images.

Thanks for the advice. I've heard of the blue hour and made some efforts to get out during it. I find however that the window for taking to picture is less than 10 minuets usually, most of the "blue hour" over powers the artificial light and desaturates it. I'll definitely make more efforts in it though, if it will reduce noise in the black sky. Thanks again, see you around FPC. -Fcb981(talk:contribs) 21:23, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Bounce Flash

Hi Thanks for your comments. As usual, they are most welcome and informative. I read the tips about the bounce flash, but did not exactly get what it said. How can I direct the flash at the ceiling and take as shot of something else. (I hope I understood right) Another thing. Most of my pictures have been spoilt by the flash, yet when I dont use the flash, the picture turns out to be grainy. What is the solution?

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:UzbekistanposterEdit.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:UzbekistanposterEdit.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 16:10, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

I thought I'd replied to this.. I think I went in search of the mention you made of getting something organised vis photographing glasses and bottles, which this would serve as an example for, but I couldn't find it :o/ (the plan was to follow up my offer of months back to write a short essay on getting decent bottle/glass shots, provide some examples etc) where was that? --mikaultalk 09:14, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
The pic? It was in the Carménère article towards the bottom. AgneCheese/Wine 10:58, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
No, the mention of needing more images like it. I've found it, it was in the last newsletter. That sort of thing is relatively easy to photograph, if you follow a few basic dos and don'ts. I shot it in a friend's kitchen using whatever light there was, with the camera set to self-timer and perched on a few books. I could easily cobble together a quick tutorial, I'm just not sure where I should put it.. --mikaultalk 11:41, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
Ah... Oh by all means. I plan on doing the next Newsletter just before Christmas like around the 23rd or 24th. Thank You

Hello Mick,

I'm delighted by your interest in the photos. The London shots were taken on 35mm Kodachrome. I believe that all Kodachrome back then was processed by Kodak company labs, and that Kodachrome equipment and chemistry were not leased and sold to other labs until the 1980s. I don't know whether the London shots were developed in London (if Kodak had a lab there), or back home in Chicago. I think his visit to London was brief...and his usual M.O. was to return home and then develop his film.

Please feel free to make any of the changes you mentioned, since I'm too busy at the moment to attend to this. Moreover, I have not yet familiarized myself with "noise reduction", and thus would have to learn it on my scanning program (Vuescan) or on my very old Photoshop Elements 2 (if , in fact, those programs even have a noise reduction feature).

Hello, after noticing your extremly clear and comprehensive Image:EIAJconnector2 edit.jpg, I seen in your user page that you are photograph, [wiki]graphist, that you speak both English and Spanish, that good points, since I come to notice you that French wikigraphists are launching a "Photographic Lab" (currently on BETA version) on the model of the Graphic Lab. The aim is that in 2 years (or one year ?), to produce 50 images such your Image:EIAJconnector2 edit.jpg each month.

I think that your level in French is not enough to help to set up this French Photographic Lab, but you can look around, just for fun, and since you clearly have a good understanding of what should be an "Encyclopedic picture", I encourage you to write in english a short and perfectly clear Tutorial to take a good Encyclopedic picture : that the best thing you can do to help the french BETA project.

An other thing to notice is that -if you write a such tutorial- it's really important to say it to fr:user:Walké, who is the leader of the project (he can talk english too).

In sum, thanks for your really good photo, Yug 17:46, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks Yug, I will take a look! --mikaultalk 18:31, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

User:Fir0002/Guild/Members - you can talk together, with other skilled photographers an plan to start a Photographic workshop/Lab. We really need to get more encyclopedic pics... 15:44, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

Care for any Chardonnay?

Hey Mick, thanks once more for your work on Ancient Greece and wine. If you get any free time, would you be willing to work your magic on the Chardonnay article? I did a significant rewrite and expansion on it in hopes of eventually getting it up to GA. Thanks again. :) AgneCheese/Wine 17:23, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

  • Wow, that has real FA potential, never mind GA. It's a key WP:WINE subject, too, great work. I'm mega-busy with RL work right now but I'll give it a brush up tonight and fine-tune it soon after. I wish I could say the same (ie potential FA) for Wine.. as the key article it really ought to be a high status piece but current content and layout is shocking. We should get in there and sort it out soon! Cheeers! --mikaultalk 09:57, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
That's totally fine. Whenever you get time. As for Wine, yeah....that is a toughie. So many times I want to just scrap the whole thing and start anew but it is hard to work up the amount of ambition needed to do that. Thanks for the nice words about Chardonnay though. FPC notification

Hello MIckStephenson

You showed interest in a picture that was up to peer review. Just want to draw your attention to that it is now up as a fpc. Just go to the fpc site and it will be on the top, or close to. PureRumble 18:52, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

OK Capitol with Flag

Thanks for the advice. I don't think I'll push it on commons, I doubt it will gather much support there either, to be honest. I just removed it from the FPC page. What's the archive template I can put on Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Oklahoma Capitol with Flag? Okiefromokla questions? 21:38, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

I'm happy to have been of some help, but I've no idea what a archive template is, sorry! --mikaultalk 22:48, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Collage

Hi. You may remember our conversation about collage and my concern about its being more than a "gluing of things to other things." You suggested that I look for an authoritative source and then modify the collage article using that source. I have finally gotten around to doing that, adding a section called 'Collage and modernism', using the Guggenheim Museum's online art glossary as reference. Thanks for the advice.
