Papenkuils wetland, Breede River

The Papenkuils wetland is one of the largest wetlands along the Breede River system (872 ha) with valuable functions as a wetland. It is situated between the towns of Rawsonville and Worcester in the Western Cape Province (southwestern South Africa). It forms part of the endangered Breede Alluvium Fynbos Biome within the Worcester District in the Breede River Valley. It is also located within a climate change/shift corridor identified by the Table Mountain Fund (WWF) as crucial piece of land linking pristine areas. It falls within Cape Floral Region Protected Area, borders Cape Winelands Biosphere Reserve (both UNESCO), situated on the foot of the Boland Mountains as an Important Bird Area.

This wetland is a biodiversity hotspot located along the Breede River. The area is designated by WWF-SA as a very high conservation status and priority site and it is an irreplaceable ecological cornerstone to conservation efforts in the Western Cape. It provides habitat to numerous indigenous and threatened plants, 7 of which are on the Red List. The surrounding area includes agricultural land, sub-economic housing developments, and the Brandvlei dam, which source detrimental impacts on the area.
