I think this is where I am supposed to keep my log. Today I read through the instructor's website, setup an account on wikipedia, and accessed class information on wikiedu. I also completed the first week's training modules. I have already learned that wikis do not include opinions, which is news to me. I am not 100% sure this is what I am supposed to do here. L Riley (talk) 04:00, 7 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Lizrileymga: Welcome to the class. How can I help with your uncertainty? (This will hopefully become more evident as you begin to work through the lessons.) Ask me anything here or on my talk page. —Grlucas (talk) 20:03, 7 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

KerryMoniqueMcNair (talk) 15:37, 14 January 2020 (UTC)== Question about log ==Reply

Should this include things like what I did for this class (training, reading, etc.) and wiki contributions (when we get further along)? L Riley (talk) 20:25, 7 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Lizrileymga: Yes, it may include anything, but keep in mind that it should always address improving Wikipedia. It needs to have this focus so that we don't break any rules here. Next week, we will use a talk page to plan and discuss the creation of our group article. This all counts toward your log. —Grlucas (talk) 13:02, 8 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
Good question, Liz -- I was wondering the same thing. I know our logs "should always address improving Wikipedia," like Dr. Lucas said, so I was worried my "this is what I did today"-style comments wouldn't fit the purpose of the log. But then again, wouldn't log comments of that nature technically fit one of the "Three C's" ("Discussing and exemplifying the skills you’re learning about the best practices for writing on Wikipedia")? Since we're practicing/learning? Or is that still not relevant enough? (Let me know if I'm overthinking, Dr. Lucas!) Pfowler17 (talk) 02:17, 9 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Pfowler17: I think you're right-on. You can even make your "this is what I did today"-style comments relate to this, too. The best approach is to just do it. —Grlucas (talk) 16:10, 11 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

I likewise am not entirely sure if I am doing any aspect of this correctly. I think I created a log, I know I did the training, and I have made an account. Basically, I am right with you in terms of uncertainty. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Benjamin Fincher (talkcontribs) 00:43, 9 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Benjamin Fincher: a certain amount of uncertainty is fine; just don't let it paralyze you. If you make a mistake, you can always fix it. Why, then, be apprehensive? Just do it! (Oh, and don't forget to sign your talk-page posts.) —Grlucas (talk) 16:10, 11 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Editing Middle Georgia State University pages

edit

Yesterday and today I have been jumped into editing the Middle Georgia State University page. I corrected a reference, added information about the establishment of Macon Junior College, and re-wrote several sentences to make them more readable. L Riley (talk) 14:44, 8 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Wikiedu and wikipedia

edit

@Grlucas: I am confused about the difference between wikiedu and wikipedia. Our class seems to have pages on both. Are these somehow tied together behind the scenes or are they two completely different things?

@Lizrileymga: Sorry this is confusing, but they are the same. If WikiEdu gets updated, it gets updated on Wikipedia. A coupl eof aspects of this relationship are problematic, but you'll get used to it. —Grlucas (talk) 16:12, 11 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Evaluate exercise

edit

@Grlucas: It looks like to me that the evaluate page that is linked to from the tutorial does not have a draft option. Should we work on our draft there (assuming that page is not visible to the world) or should we work on this in our sandbox and then move to the evaluate page once it's complete? Norris Church Mailer

edit

I spent the day creating a first draft of the assignment to evaluate the article for Norris Church Mailer. This required reading other articles and researching references using Galileo. @Grlucas: Are all citations and references supposed to be in one particular format, like APA or MLA?

@Lizrileymga: No, just consistent for the article. If you use templates, then that should take care of it. BTW, I did not get informed of this ping (or the one above); you might need to use correct capitalization. —Grlucas (talk) 15:21, 25 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Grlucas: How do you cite something you just know? For example, I know the names of the plants that Bibb Manufacturing had. If I put that in the article, is that an interview with myself? :) L Riley (talk) 02:27, 5 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Lizrileymga: No, and that could be interpreted as a conflict of interest (probably not in this case, since the place does not exist any more). You should try to find secondary support for the things you know. I ran into the same problems with writing Norman Mailer Society.

@Grlucas: One more question...I have a source that has no date and no author. How do I use SFN with that scenario? L Riley (talk) 14:44, 5 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Spent yesterday at MGA library printing articles. Still looking for photographs L Riley (talk) 13:14, 17 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Grlucas: I found a couple of pictures. Some are from the library of Congress and say that they can be freely used. Another I found on Ancestry.com and is dated 1915. When I went to Wikimedia Commons it has a graphic that says you can upload pictures that you have permission to use. I think the Library of Congress pics would fall under that. It also said you should only upload pics of buildings older than 150 years. That made me hesitate on the pic from Ancestry that is from 1915. Your thoughts? L Riley (talk) 13:14, 17 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Lizrileymga: Rights are tricky. What I would do is try it. The worst that happens is they remove the photo from the commons. Also, sometimes it's easier to just upload images here on Wikipedia. Again, you won't get in trouble if they are removed. This has happened to me multiple times and quite inconsistently which is why I can't be any more reassuring than I have. —Grlucas (talk) 16:24, 17 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Grlucas: I have a table of plants in my article. There are plants that I know existed but I haven't been able to chase down sources to prove their existence. Do I leave them in the table un-sourced or should I remove them? L Riley (talk) 16:00, 19 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Lizrileymga: You could probably leave them, though another editor might come along and remove them in the future. —Grlucas (talk) 13:49, 21 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Draft notes

edit

Hi! I have some notes on your draft:

  • Make sure to be careful of formatting when it comes to things like headers. I've fixed this, but it's always good to be aware of this. I also changed the header title from "the end" to "closure" to be more in keeping with Wikipedia's style guide for headers.
  • The background section should be focused on the background of the company in specific. There's information about the founding and location of Macon, as well as information about transportation advances, but it doesn't establish why these are important to the background of the BMC. Essentially, the river conditions and transportation advances are sort of a given and not really of importance per se, unless there is sourcing that specifically discusses these elements when talking about the company.
  • This could use more sourcing that is specifically about the company. I'm a little concerned that there isn't a lot and that some of it may only mention the company in passing - keep in mind that brief mentions are often only seen as trivial mentions that can't establish notability, so you'll need something more in-depth to show where the BMC is notable.

I hope this helps! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 00:11, 6 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Peer Review

edit

Hi @Lizrileymga:I completed my peer review of your draft article on Bibb Manufacturing. Overall I think you're off to a great start. One thing I noted in my review repeats Shalor's comment from above in that most of your sources are currently from newspapers that mention the topic in passing. With a few more substantial sources I think you'll have a well-developed article. I can't wait to read it when you've made your final edits. Ereed23 (talk) 01:30, 11 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Ereed23: Thanks for the feedback. I will be continuing to work on this article. One note...There are very few sources available other than newspapers. I have a couple of books, but most of what remains about the organization is in newspapers. Thanks again. L Riley (talk) 01:56, 11 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Grlucas: I am not sure at what point to review the articles I have chosen to review. One article has no content from my classmate and nothing in their sandbox. The other has a good bit more work to be done. Do I review as is or do I give them both a little more time? L Riley (talk) 01:56, 11 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Reflexive Statement

edit

Critiquing articles

My approach to critiquing articles on Wikipedia was to use the template provided in the critiquing tutorial. This guide helped me create my critique of the Norris Church Mailer article. In the process of searching for an article to improve or write, I also completed concise critiques of articles about Rose Hill Cemetery and the Johnston-Felton Hay House.

The critiquing process helped me understand the unique way that Wikipedia articles should be laid out and the guidelines to be followed. I also learned that there are a lot of articles on Wikipedia that need work. Three problems that I noticed repeatedly were poorly constructed leads, a tone that is not neutral, and citation format issues. The critiquing process also helped me to avoid problems in the writing of my article. Lastly, my critiquing of articles led me to choose to add an article about Bibb Manufacturing. In the process of informally critiquing the articles about Rose Hill Cemetery and the Johnston-Felton-Hay House, I started looking at other articles that related to Macon. I discovered that there was no article about Bibb Manufacturing.

Contributions

My first contributions to Wikipedia were fairly small. In the Middle Georgia State University article, I added a short paragraph and a reference to Board of Regents meeting minutes, and I re-wrote a few sentences to make them more readable. In the Pio Nono College article, I added sentences and a reference. In the Porterdale, Ellamae Ellis League, and Bibb City articles I added links back to the newly written Bibb Manufacturing article. In the Johnston-Felton-Hay House article, I corrected a citation.

In The Faith of Graffiti article, I add three references and changed several citations to SFN format. I added paragraphs in the Background and Reception sections and added sentences to the Synopsis. I also completed several passes at copyediting which resulted in re-writing of several sentences and re-working of the background section so that the transitions between paragraphs were smoother. I also added information to the information block, a picture, and several links.

I wrote a new article for Bibb Manufacturing Company. This article includes 23 sources and three pictures. Research for this article required trips to Middle Georgia State’s library and Washington Memorial Library to read articles on microfilm. I also ordered three books via Interlibrary Loan and have contacted the author of one of the books. Once I had completed the article, I added a re-direct from "The Bibb Company" to the Bibb Manufacturing article.

In WikiCommons, I uploaded five pictures related to Bibb Manufacturing.

Peer review

The first article that I reviewed was assigned to |kerrymonique. The article was titled "Spidelian hernia" and the student planned to improve it. The article was a little bit of a challenge because it addressed a medical topic about which I know nothing. In my review I noted that the Lead was where I felt the most improvements could be made. I also recommended some re-arranging of content and pointed out places that needed citations.

The second article that I reviewed was a new article being written by Bamcclure18. At the time I reviewed it, it appeared to be in rough draft mode. In my review I noted grammatical errors and that the content should be re-arranged for easier reading. There were sentences that were run-on and the Lead needed to be expanded. Addition sources were also recommended.

I have received reviews from two people; ereed23 and dcb1986. In both cases I was grateful for the suggestions. The first review identified some grammar errors and recommended that I expand the Lead to cover one additional section in the article. She also suggested that I add some pictures and links to other Wikipedia articles. The second review included positive comments and suggested that I change the title of one section. I have made all changes that were suggested.

Feedback

I received some feedback about my Bibb Manufacturing article draft from Shalor, although the feedback has disappeared now that the article is live. I attended to the problems that were pointed out. I also received feedback from Magor the Ogre on WikiCommons. While uploading pictures for my article, I did not properly license three of the pictures. I communicated with the Mago_the_Ogre and was able to correct the license so that the pictures can be used.

How did you do this?

Wikipedia generally

Contributing to Wikipedia has taught me several things. I learned how to use a platform and format with which I was completely unfamiliar. I learned to communicate with fellow editors through Talk pages. I learned how to write about a topic with which I have no familiarity. I also brushed up on my research skills. Lastly, I have a much better understanding and appreciation of the value of Wikipedia.

These Wikipedia assignments were very different from any assignment I’ve ever done. Doing research, writing paragraphs, copy-editing, and creating citations were very familiar to me. Using the Wikipedia editor, following Wikipedia’s format for citations, and following Wikipedia’s rules/guidelines for the layout of articles were new to me and unlike any assignment I’ve done before. Also, communicating about assignments and to other classmates was very different.

Historical information is scattered around in books, web pages, microfilm, and in the stories that people share verbally. Wikipedia provides a public, fact-based venue to pull together this information at no cost to readers and hopefully for many generations to come. This is important because when the information is gathered in one location it is easier to understand why and how things came to be. It is also important in this era of fake news to have a resource that people are diligently trying to keep neutral.

Well done. I appreciate your professional approach and assessment. Your article is first-rate and very well executed. I hope you continue to apply your talents to Wikipedia. —Grlucas (talk) 16:24, 26 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
