Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Petroleum infrastructure in Australia

A tag has been placed on Category:Petroleum infrastructure in Australia requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

Doesn't Australia have oases?

I noticed that you removed a number of oases categories from Australian articles. There are at least half a dozen oases within the Australian desert(s), which fulfill the same criteria as those in the Sahara, Arabian and Gobi deserts. An oases is a pool or spring in a remote dry area, which is usually fed by underground springs. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.185.74.2 (talk) 15:37, 24 January 2020 (UTC)

Boyce Gardens upload photos

Hi Kerry Raymond,

I am relatively new to Wikipedia so please excuse me if I am doing things wrong. I saw your message thanking me for uploading photos to Boyce Gardens. You're welcome. I have more photos of the garden but don't want to overdo it. Please advise if you think I should add more or is that sufficient?

Very pleased to see this wonderful garden on Wikipedia. I am related to the Boyces and spent many great times there. Walterswithin (talk) 12:40, 25 January 2020 (UTC)

Hi Kerry, Thanks for your informative reply. Yes, the Boyce swimming pool did get filled in for health and safety reasons. I've changed the caption as you suggested.

The University of Queensland web site has a lot of information about the Boyce gardens and the Boyces themselves. I am not sure if any of this can be brought over to Wikipedia, or does that constitute a breach of copyright?

I added a photo to the Mount Lofty article, but it's not positioned very well. See what you think. Walterswithin (talk) 12:10, 26 January 2020 (UTC)

local knowledge

Hi Kerry. I created Harlin Solar Farm because it was listed as "Under construction" at List of solar farms in Queensland and large. However as I sought references for the article, it seems to be more of a lawyer's dream than an actual construction site. Do you know whether it has really started construction (beyond a photo op with an MP) or is ever likely to? Thanks. --Scott Davis Talk 03:46, 27 January 2020 (UTC)

@ScottDavis: I can't shed any more light on the project. I've never heard of it myself but it's definitely listed as "proposed project" using this map from which you can get a download of of a CSV of all usch projects (which might be useful source material for your list). Using the Qld Globe, the land use for that site is listed as "grazing on native vegetation" which is clearly the use of the land that you can see in Google Street View (I think the tree surrounded by sheep is the tree in the photo op but taken at a slightly different angle). But what's there right now on the site is hard to know without driving past and looking. It appears to be a Chinese project so maybe financing has been impacted by China-USA trade war. Minor edits

Thanks for your message on my talk page (and feel free to reply here). Do you have particular examples (other than my page move yesterday which was accidental) in mind? - I'm keen to make sure my edits are not seen as vandalism! Bookscale (talk) 10:37, 4 February 2020 (UTC)

Aboriginal language copy/pastes

Not sure this is working too well. Although we totally need better coverage of traditional owners and history pre-white settlement, much of these copy/pastes aren't relevant to the actual area concerned, and the focus on "language areas" is a really white-people take on adding information on specific Aboriginal peoples. I feel like it looks a bit silly, say, at Palmer, Queensland, which had significant frontier-war conflict during the Palmer rushes, to have a history section that's mainly a big slab of text focusing on how widely Aboriginal languages spoken in the Palmer area were also spoken in other places. The Drover's Wife (talk) 00:13, 9 February 2020 (UTC)

10 copy/pasted paragraphs about different Aboriginal groups in one LGA history section is really getting a bit na-na. The Drover's Wife (talk) 07:33, 12 February 2020 (UTC)

CHL

Another thing for when you get around to it (sorry to add another thing to your list!) - I lack the generated entries for the internal territories and the two from overseas, which would be great to have sometime. The Drover's Wife (talk) 12:15, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

If you've got any insight into the history, etc of the Brisbane CAEs it'd be really useful to have - it's a chapter of higher ed we don't have much about because it's such a bastard to cover due to that three-decade digitisation gap. The Drover's Wife (talk) 11:04, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

Brisbane Panorama 1888

Hi Kerry, there is an image online (colourised) of a Brisbane Panorama in 1888 from Southbank looking towards the CBD, I thought this would be a great image to have in the History of Brisbane section but I'm not sure if its allowed to be uploaded or not and I can't find a source other than on Pinterest. Any help here? Thanks--Caltraser55 (talk) 01:17, 7 April 2020 (UTC)

@Caltraser55: this one? If so, it's impossible to know what its copyright status is because we don't have any information. Is it a painting from 1888? Is it a painting from 2018 about what Brisbane looked like in 1888? Who is the author, when did they die etc? Was the colouring done at the original time or subsequently and by whom? Etc. I had a look for find this image elsewhere but failed. I can only suggest you contact the uploader on Pintrest and ask them where they found it and what they know of its origins. Draft article

Hi Kerry, I thought I'd ask you this as you do a lot of work on Queensland articles. Are you a new page reviewer, and if so, would you be able to look at and promote Draft:Vernon Ah Kee please? I didn't create it, but discovered it when I was going to create a page for him a little while ago. I've done a bit of copyediting and it looks good enough to go to me (much better than a lot of existing articles!), but I don't think I'm authorised and am not sure of the process to promote it to mainspace. there are quite a few articles red-linking to him and it would be good to get it up ASAP. Cheers, Laterthanyouthink (talk) 01:44, 4 April 2020 (UTC)

@Laterthanyouthink: Ahh ... I am not sure whether you should have helped with this draft, given it appears to be a university assignment (see the user page for the draft creator). @Bidgee: Given your role in this university course, what's your advice on the situation? Kerry (talk) 01:54, 4 April 2020 (UTC)
Oh... I didn't see anything to indicate that it was an assignment, and I posted a welcome message and other comments on their page back in Feb, but they didn't get back to me, so I returned to it and did some more. Hope I haven't mucked anything up, sorry. Shouldn't there be something on the page somewhere to indicate that it's an assignment? I have sometimes seen posts on talk pages of existing articles indicating this, but there was nothing on this article's talk page. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 02:08, 4 April 2020 (UTC)
@Laterthanyouthink: Generally when we know something is being done in a class situation or an edit-a-thon, most of us back off and give the new users a bit of room to work on the article without assistance/interference. But at the end of the day, this is Wikipedia -- it's not a classroom. You were quite within your rights to do what you did from that perspective and you did it in good faith. I am not criticising you for what you did. But I won't promote it to mainspace but wait for Bidgee to comment on what's the best thing to do now. Obviously a risk of running a university assignment on Wikipedia is the issue of involvement by "regular contributors". And the risk to Wikipedia is that we may end up with crappy work, but, having supported a couple of other university courses in doing student assignments on Wikipedia (but not this particular university's course), I would have to say that the standard of the students' work has always been good (better than the average random Wikipedia contributor), which mirrors your comment about this draft. Don't panic, just wait to see what Bidgee suggests. Kerry (talk) 02:31, 4 April 2020 (UTC)
Okay, thanks Kerry. What I did was mainly fairly minor copyediting; I didn't add content as I was aware it was a newbie's article. I'll leave it in your and Bidgee's hands. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 02:50, 4 April 2020 (UTC)
I have emailed User:Carrolquadrio, this is possibly one of her student's from the summer session at USYD. Personally, I think it should be moved into the main space but will allow Carrol to comment. Bidgee (talk) 12:16, 5 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks Bidgee and all. This was a student from our summer school course in which I am senior tutor. This is not one of mine (they would not still be in Draft, ha ha). Of my classes, students did manage to have articles assessed: 7 B class, 5 C class and 15 start within four weeks, so more than half, which was a pleasing result. Thanks for all the help. We understand editors will come in and that is the nature of the Wikipedian community, so we prepare students for that. Sometimes it works in their favour and at other times they have to go back and put some more work in, that's okay too. It is a real learning experience and we use the history pages and other formal assessments to grade. We have now put an 'educational assessment' template on the current work , thanks to Bidgee for that. Go ahead and move to the mainspace Laterthanyouthink and thank you all --Carrolquadrio (talk) 02:25, 9 April 2020 (UTC)
@Laterthanyouthink, Carrolquadrio, and Bidgee: Thanks all for clarifying the status of this draft. I did an AfC acceptance and the student should have received the usual AfC acceptance message. Go wild with it as you will! Kerry (talk) 02:39, 9 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks Kerry sorry I meant to include you in that last reply. --Carrolquadrio (talk) 02:43, 9 April 2020 (UTC)

Boothtown Aqueduct

I just took those archives off as they aren't needed. Also, why is the archiveurl not showing on the link but on the archived link ? when did that change Dave Rave (talk) 20:00, 3 April 2020 (UTC)

@Dave Rave: It's pre-emptive archiving. That is the link is still live, but the archive url is added in anticipation of the day when that URL stops working (404 error) or is usurped (redirected to something completely unexpected_. If a reader comes to a citation that doesn't work (whether dead or usurped), the archiveurl is accessible to them. It is much better for the reader. I do pre-emptive archiving all the time. I normally archive a web page when I cite it, so I know that archive snapshot has the page content I used as source material. Usurped URLs are a real problem (as the link appears to be "live" to tools but the content is totally not what was intended by the citation) which misleads automated tools that react to the error 404 response. Simply, pre-emptive archiving (where possible, some sites disallow archiving) protects the information content and verifiability of WIkipedia. It's a bit more work for me but I think it is worth the effort for the longevity and verifiability of the content. Kerry (talk) 23:51, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
nice idea .. but .. now that I know not a problem, ... but .. for later, perhaps just inlcude the archive datum in a comment area? for when it is needed ... Dave Rave (talk) 06:52, 10 April 2020 (UTC)

Fortune (1805 ship)

Hi Kerry, why did you make the changes to the Lloyd's List citations? Your solution is a bad one. Lloyd's List is a title of a newspaper and should be italicized. The issue number should not be italicized, and it isn't, but it is not part of the newspapers title and so should be separated from it. There are templates that are appropriate, I just don't now them. You are of course welcome to change the citations, but if you do so please do it in a way that doesn't mislead and create new infelicities. Cheers, Acad Ronin (talk) 23:40, 10 April 2020 (UTC)

@Acad Ronin: I wasn't changing the citation, I was simply trying to fix a unstructured citation which had broken syntax and a naked URL (all of which made me think there was little I could do with it that wasn't an improvement!). I looked for a specific template, thinking there might be one but could not find one, so I went with {{Cite web}} since a URL was involved. But now you have explained it's a newspaper (I was unsure of whether it was or wasn't), I've made it a {{cite news}}, which means the number can now be an issue number. I think that's the best structured template choice until someone find/creates a specific template. Kerry (talk) 02:22, 11 April 2020 (UTC)
Super. Thanks. Acad Ronin (talk) 02:33, 11 April 2020 (UTC)

Maryborough

Hi Kerry, Thanks for helping out with the Sugar section of Maryborough. Just wanted to say that the Pacific Islander Hospital and Cemetery site is an excellent article. If you want to write the sugar section for Maryborough please do. I was just going to utilise some of the Hospital and Cemetery page for it and add some other material I found in a brief couple of paragraphs. Happy editing! Cheers, Jemmy. Dippiljemmy (talk) 02:15, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

@Dippiljemmy: I can't really take too much credit for Pacific Islander Hospital and Cemetery site as it was an article I created using CC-BY content from the Queensland Heritage Register, which makes for much less work than researching it all on my own. There is some quite good material at this Qld Govt site on the history of various indigenous communities (which is also CC-BY), some of which has already been added to the relevant articles, some of which has not, if you are looking for source material. There's also a lot of CC-BY content at the State Library of Queensland, this is probably the best entry point. There is also content in NSW heritage database (search using the heritge listing dropdown "NPW Act Indigenous places") which has 100+ entries (all CC-BY). Just remember to include an attribution. For whole articles like Pacific Islander Hospital and Cemetery site, I do it in an attribution subsection. For small quantities of re-used text, I suggest attribution with the citation, e.g. see Cape York Peninsula citation [10] and other similar ones. While these were all done with template (because there were to be a lot of similar ones, you can just do them manually or I can help set up templates if you are planning to re-use a lot of content from a particular CC-BY source. Articles for Creation: List of reviewers by subject notice

Hi Kerry Raymond, you are receiving this notice because you are listed as an active Articles for Creation reviewer.

Recently a list of reviewers by area of expertise was created. This notice is being sent out to alert you to the existence of that list, and to encourage you to add your name to it. If you or other reviewers come across articles in the queue where an acceptance/decline hinges on specialist knowledge, this list should serve to facilitate contact with a fellow reviewer.

To end on a positive note, the backlog has dropped below 1,500, so thanks for all of the hard work some of you have been putting into the AfC process!

Sent to all Articles for Creation reviewers as a one-time notice. To opt-out of all massmessage mailings, you may add Category:Wikipedians who opt out of message delivery to your user talk page. Regards, Sam-2727 (talk)

Hi Kerry,

When you made your series of edits to this page, you left a sentence fragment in the geography section, which I noticed because it was flagged as a double "the". Since that section doesn't have a citation, I can't figure out the missing phrase that you meant to add. Your edits were last November, but I hope you can remember what you wanted to say and make the correction. Thanks.

Editing news 2020 #3

On 16 March 2020, the 50 millionth edit was made using the visual editor on desktop.

Seven years ago this week, the Editing team made the visual editor available by default to all logged-in editors using the desktop site at the English Wikipedia. Here's what happened since its introduction:

  • The 50 millionth edit using the visual editor on desktop was made this year. More than 10 million edits have been made here at the English Wikipedia.
  • More than 2 million new articles have been created in the visual editor. More than 600,000 of these new articles were created during 2019.
  • Almost 5 million edits on the mobile site have been made with the visual editor. Most of these edits have been made since the Editing team started improving the mobile visual editor in 2018.
  • The proportion of all edits made using the visual editor has been increasing every year.
  • Editors have made more than 7 million edits in the 2017 wikitext editor, including starting 600,000 new articles in it. The 2017 wikitext editor is VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode. You can enable it in your preferences.
  • On 17 November 2019, the first edit from outer space was made in the mobile visual editor.
  • In 2019, 35% of the edits by newcomers, and half of their first edits, were made using the visual editor. This percentage has been increasing every year since the tool became available.
