Happy new year 2012
Apologies if I don't seem too formal, but I still wish you a very happy new year 2012. Hope to create and better more articles this year. Kailash29792 (talk) 07:55, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry for the late wishes. I'm not very familiar with the use of these templates, and I thought of putting a note wishing everyone here, but had to drop the idea. I just saw Don2, didn't like it much, with the exception of the visuals and the camera work. Even the songs were disappointing. SRK might have some luck down south, maybe by doing a junior artist's work in a Rajini film. :D Awaiting Agneepath right now, and Nanban. There aren't much releases in Tamil this year, so I hope it will be peaceful. By the way, see the teaser of a Tamil film. It does not have any romances or musical numbers. Have a rocking year! X.One SOS 13:17, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
- I also recommend that you hear the English remix of Kolaveri. It somehow makes the original look good, but it's not very different. X.One SOS 13:19, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Trolls
Hey Karthik. Hope you're doing well. After Ashermadan, we've this brand-new troll, Raonebest, who has kicked off with his trolling, and slowly marching towards Bodyguard and other movies. This kind of this thing just pisses me off. I'd replied to his edit request on Talk:List of highest-grossing Bollywood films#Edit request on 23 December 2011 after four days of no response by other editors, and here, because I knew lack of response will give him a license to screw things up. Can you handle him? Regards, Scieberking (talk) 11:06, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
- His movies are trashy, so are most movies of SRK and others, but let's face it, Salman is the biggest movie star in India right now. Why is he always the victim? Media, urban population, jury, critics... Everything goes against him. I'm not a fan at all or anything, but that kind of thing is just not fair. Ain't his fanbase, which consists of poor masses I suppose, has the right to enjoy cinema and be entertained? Reminds me of what Michael Corleone said; Just when I thought I was out...they pull me back in... LOL Scieberking (talk) 11:27, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
- I think I will handle this round of disruption. As far as I'm concerned, the only, repeat only, decent performance by Salman in his entire career was Tere Naam. I think he did his version of Johnny Strabler. On a similar note, SRK's only two good performances have to be Swades and Chak De. He annoyingly overplays every part (an overactor in his own words) and he's honest enough to admit it. Salman, on the other hand, carelessly underplays every scene he performs in his own dabangg style. Probably because this is what his audiences really want. Aamir is obviously the best of the lot because he has extensively studied Stanislavski System ahd he actually understands cinema. My brief commentary on the acting aspects of Hindi cinema :) Scieberking (talk) 11:49, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi Karthik. This article is now GA and my first one in Wp. Please add it to Wikipedia:WikiProject Film/Indian cinema task force. Thanks. X.One SOS 11:10, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
- Hey, thanks a lot. I just had to apply italics to the film name, :D. If I get more in future, I may add it to my user page but till then, lets wait. The review was too short. Thanks again. X.One SOS 11:21, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
- There has been a request for an edit in the Nanban talk page. The IP has given a reliable source [1], while the TOI source referred to is this. The latter seems to say that "The front-runner for Aamir Khan's role in the film is Suriya, though sources close to him say he will not do the role as he has no immediate dates to offer." making it clear that it is a rumour. On the other hand, the source given by the IP says "Gemini Film Circuit and Shankar had initially signed up Vijay to do the Tamil version of the blockbuster Aamir Khan's Rajkumar Hirani directed 3 Idiots." This one's surely not a rumour and both sites are equally reliable. I thought of answering it saying "Please glance through the above requests", but was not sure. Hence, I thought you might be interested to take the final decision. Regards. X.One SOS 14:23, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
- Ya, without Cherry picking, we can say that "Both Vijay and Suriya were initially reported to have bagged the lead role, but Suriya walked out due to ...., and Vijay later ..... Later, it was confirmed that Vijay had come back ..." Hope you get the idea. Just remove the word "front-runner" and give it in a neutral manner. Thanks. X.One SOS 14:50, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
- Did you have a good look at the sources? What's your conclusion about interpreting their content (rumour or not)? Ya, we can say that both "have" been considered for the role. X.One SOS 15:03, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
- Unfortunate that it borders on WP:OR. Ya, your point of Suriya seems fine and the TOI source looks like a rumour, so why don't we replace it with the Sify source and say that Vijay was first reported to have been approached. It would satisfy all fans :) and be provided in a neutral manner without violating any policies. X.One SOS 15:14, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

I have removed the TOI source. But no problem other than that. Just wanted to ask you, do you speak Tamil? :) X.One SOS 15:20, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
- Heck no. I do not know to read Tamil, except one or two alphabets. That's why I removed the ta-3 template from my user boxes. I speak the language everyday, and I do not get a flow of slang. Maybe I'm learning, but my friends at my age speak better than me. I'm much better in English. I don't watch Sun TV often. Have you been to Chennai? People here have an anti-north feeling always and do not encourage Bollywood lovers. X.One SOS 15:30, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
- Lol. In the Marina Beach the best thing you can hope for is that there are no bottles you'll step on when you keep your leg in the sand. And of course it is NOT safe after six, even for adults. The main slum population of the city live near the northern part of the beach. But you know, there are people in Mumbai who hate the Southans, especially Tamils. Re.visited
You guys saw this list? Ra.One's nett gross (from all versions combined: 2D, 3D, dubbed, Hindi) is 118 crore according to Komal Nahta, who termed the movie as Commission-Earner to Overflow (B1 to BB) while saying it lost money "in some circuits". The film earned a little more than $8.9 million overseas (not $10 million; another bogus claim by him). Now how can that Jain guy claim its worldwide gross is 240 crore? This is beyond any logic... Comments, anyone? Scieberking (talk) 21:30, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
- Well, all I can give is another instance of Kamal's "nonsense". In the lead, it is stated that Ra.One used 50c for marketing and advertising. However, in the interview used for stating the budget, he has said that the marketing budget was only 10c. Nett gross is different from distributor's share and it means gross (ticket sales) - some tax. BOI had explained that. Considering the fact that the film released in 5000 screens, the tax obtained must have been very high. 240-122, well it varies from source to source. Looking at Taran's source updates also gives a clear picture. Being the producers, unless some direct controversy sparks off, I don't think we can accuse them for now, unless contradicting sources are found. It is unlikely that the film has beaten Bodyguard, as it also had a poorer opening, dropped equally after the first week and had a larger lot of negative reviews to it. Regards. 3 Idiots
Hi Karthik, long time since I spoke to you. I was just wondering if 3 Idiots should be assessed as of "High" importance in project India as well as Indian Cinema or any other related projects considering the film is currently the highest grossing film produced by India and its been more than 2 years now to retain that position? I was also thinking sometime why the film's article is not a GA and no editor seems to be working on it too. Don't you think the film deserved it more than any other film in Bollywood? Second, how do you do the assessment? Can I be of any help? Please let me know of it as I find it a little interesting rather than simply updating, reverting and fighting over Box office issues of some films. -- Msrag (talk) 07:10, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) "High" or even "Top" importance for 3 Idiots is okay for Indian-cinema, in my opinion. But I dont think it, or as a matter of fact, any film should be of High importance for WikiProject India. For such films which have rave reviews, high box-office figures and multiple awards, including NFAs, Mid-importance is sufficient. What say others? -Animeshkulkarni (talk) 07:52, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
- On second thoughts I feel you are absolutely right Animesh. May be "Top" should be good for Indian Cinema and "Mid" for India. One article that I fail to understand is that of Preity Zinta. I wonder why is that article assessed as of "High" importance to Indian Cinema along with Satyajit Ray. Are we considering only the articles here? or the personalities behind? If its the star to be considered, then I am sorry to say Preity Zinta is absolutely of no High importance to India and Indian Cinema. Just a 30 film year old, a single Filmfare award winner, with virtually no films in her kitty cannot be compared to the likes of Madhuri Dixit, Sridevi, Nutan, Nargis and so on irrespective of the size of her article. - Do everything that needs doing in the WikiProject, or getting it done alongwith others.

Welcome to your new responsibility - Volunteer Coordinator for WikiProject Mumbai!
We welcome you to post of volunteer coordinator for Wikipedia:WikiProject Mumbai. This volunteership is important because the WikiProject needs vision, guidance and direction and in the absence of anyone undertaking this responsibility in a holistic manner, the community felt that a volunteer coordinator was needed for WikiProject :Mumbai; in fact for each of the task forces/daughter projects/related projects to WikiProject India. We have asked for other volunteers to be co-coordinator alongwith you as you requested. Hopefully someone will respond soon.

@Both Harsh & Jagadhatri: You both need to cool down and work mutually. There are enough IPs to fight with on TV show articles.

Did you see 'her' comment on the ageing issue? Looks like we all are 'immature' wasting our time here at Wiki. Nothing surprising though as I knew and expected the same reaction from her. Something has to be done. No one is here to monopolize Wiki articles. BTW, an IP user added a whole stuff of controversies section at 'the' page. What can be done? I suggest we vote.. on that issue as well as on the neutrality of the whole article. Something like 3 for fully biased, 2 for partially biased, 1 for neutral. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.
If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. - After seeing this image find its way into several other articles, I did a little more digging and just deleted the image outright as failing NFCC#2. You seem like someone who is genuinely doing what they can to help Wikipedia, and I note that you're also interested in becoming an administrator, so I feel like I should give you a few pointers as to what was wrong with the use of that particular image; if you're going to be working with non-free content (and, yes, uploading it certainly counts as working with it) then I think there are a few things you need to understand. The image failed the following criteria:
- 2. This was the reason it was deleted. We cannot use non-free content if we're replacing the original market role of the content; for instance, if someone is creating content with an aim to selling the rights, we can't just go and use it without buying the rights. That's what the likes of the Press Association (who owned this image) exist for. There are occasionally exceptions for when the image itself is significant; obviously, some press photographs have become significant in and of themselves. The use of these is slightly different.
- 3b. The image was enormous. When uploading non-free content, please downsize it.
- 8. The image was not adding a lot to the articles in which it was used. Yes, the fact the team won is significant, and so should be talked about. However, non-free content is used only when "its presence ... significantly increase[s] readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding." This picture is not actually showing anything that needs to be shown. It shows us that they celebrated- we can guess that, and if it really needs to be said, it can be said. A picture is not needed.
- 10c. This may not have been your fault, but, in any case, the image was used on multiple articles in which there was no rationale. A separate rationale must be written for every use, explaining in each case why the image meets the non-free content criteria (especially 1 and 8).
- I hope this doesn't seem too patronising, and I hope you take what I've said on board. J Milburn (talk) 15:31, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
- That's not a problem at all, I'm always happy to help. Thanks for understanding, and I appreciate that the non-free content policies can be difficult to get your head around. J Milburn (talk) 16:22, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

The protection of one article is gonna end n June 9, the second on June 10 and the other just after three weeks. Nearly all of them are soap opera articles. Recently an user (Dadjan) was blocked indefinetely for continuous didruptive edit on Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, so after the protection ends he may be back with a sockpuppet account or an IP address so please be aware. Anoter one (i.e. Byah Hamari Bahu Ka) is on a brand new serial so that may be extensively edited by IP address users or others, so please check on them too. One more things is that Yuvraj Uday Veer Singh (a character of Dekha Ek Khwaab) is not the male protagonist of the show. If anyone adds that just revert that edit, many users engaged in edit war regarding that so a case is ongoing against them, especially Seherali. The list articles are as follows:

- Byah Hamari Bahu Ka

Replaceable fair use File:Spain winning EURO 2012 title.jpg
Thanks for uploading File:Spain winning EURO 2012 title.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails the first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the media description page and edit it to add
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. – PeeJay 22:06, 1 July 2012 (UTC)

- Hi Karthik, I was just glancing at the article on A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, and I found some minor flaws. In the lead, it says: "Kalam was elected the President of India in 2002, defeating Lakshmi Sahgal and was supported by both National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and BJP, the major political parties of India." The BJP is part of the NDA and the NDA is not a political party at all. Did you mean to say both the Indian National Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party? Because I see no mention of support from the Congress in the relevant section. Also, in the section on the Presidency, the quote from Kalam could be blockquoted, instead of the quote from George Fernandes, which, I feel, is a bit tacky. Username problem
Dear Karthikndr,
I'm a user from Nagpur, India.
I will be grateful if you help me out in this issue: I had created an account in Wikipedia in the year 2006 named user:Ashwinsarwate, but was not much involved in serious editing. I forgot password and/or the account was reset [exactly i don't remember]. In april 2012 I got to learn much more about Wikipedia and decided to try to be an active editor. I created another account user:Sarwateashwin, being unaware of the fact that it is unethical to create multiple usernames(my serious apologies for that). I had completely forgotten about my earlier username. Recently an administrative editor hinted me that it is not good to have a username indicative of your real name, at this time I was also unaware of the provision of changing username I decided that I will create a new account (and I created this one) and delete the older one user:Sarwateashwin. Later I came across the page which describes that a username can be changed or usurped. All this put me in a fix, and trying to be precautionary about not violating Wiki guidelines, I decided to take your guidance
At first I decided to send a request for usurping user:Sarwateashwin to user:WhiteStar6, but since my account is only 3 months old I thought my request will be declined.
Please suggest me what to do, I apologize for violating Wiki Rules by creating these many accounts, but my intentions were clean: 1) To usurp user:Ashwinsarwate to user:WhiteStar6. (I would prefer this option if its ok with you) ( I have recovered the former account also) 2) To usurp user:Sarwateashwin to user:WhiteStar6. 3) Continue with user:WhiteStar6 but this account is too new (older accounts have more validity I've heard).
Please suggest me what to do. I hope I'm not bothering you.
Thank you.
Ashwin Sarwate.
WhiteStar6 (talk) 13:13, 16 July 2012 (UTC)
- Ashwin, you can keep using WhiteStar6 as your account. You can also point out the fact that the other Ashwin Sarwate accounts are your own. However, it makes sense not to do that to preserve your privacy. The better thing to do at this time would be to retire the current accounts you have access to and are operating with clear notifications on the user pages and then privately move on to a third user name which is only known to you. If you, however, intend to edit the same articles as you do now, then it is likely that the users you have interacted with in the past may identify you. — Nearly Headless Nick {c} 13:50, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

I see all of them have e-mail ID attached. If you forgot your password, use Special:PasswordReset this link to Reset your password. And just leave/ignore other accounts. Hope this helps. Moment of Joy! | |
What brought me to Wikipedia was the lack of information in the article of Meera. In mid-April 2012, after spending nearly 3 and a half months, I planned to add to those article which are seldom edited by others. Those included the Nawabs of Bengal & Murshidabad, articles related to it and soap opera articles. Soap operas are ongoing so I have to edit them daily but the article on the Nawabs is a piece of history...and I took up the work alone. Later, in May some editors helped me to fix typos and grammatical errors, but soon withdrew back their help. But, by God's grace I finished with the work today on 4 August 2012 and would love to share this success with you! My condition was same as the flying man in the pic, trying to catch a several things at the same time before it's too late. I don't know whether he succeeds or not, bu I did succeed! However, I still have to add some references and summarize the plots of soap opera articles in the soap opera articles. If you want, then you can help. Orphaned non-free media (File:Ministry of Finance of India logo.gif)
Thanks for uploading File:Ministry of Finance of India logo.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:39, 14 September 2012 (UTC)

vishwaroopam DTH controversy
don't you think the section in Controversies related to Vishwaroopam which deals with the DTH issue can be expanded? The Islamic protests thing was almost the whole article, so I thought DTH could be equally long and that's why I put the expand tag. Kailash29792 (talk) 05:27, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 February newsletter
Round 1 is now over. The top 64 scorers have progressed to round 2, where they have been randomly split into eight pools of eight. At the end of April, the top two from each pool, as well as the 16 highest scorers from those remaining, will progress to round 3. Commiserations to those eliminated; if you're interested in still being involved in the WikiCup, able and willing reviewers will always be needed, and if you're interested in getting involved with other collaborative projects, take a look at the WikiWomen's Month discussed below.
Round 1 saw 21 competitors with over 100 points, which is fantastic; that suggests that this year's competition is going to be highly competative. Our lower scores indicate this, too: A score of 19 was required to reach round 2, which was significantly higher than the 11 points required in 2012 and 8 points required in 2011. The score needed to reach round 3 will be higher, and may depend on pool groupings. In 2011, 41 points secured a round 3 place, while in 2012, 65 was needed. Our top three scorers in round 1 were:
- Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), primarily for an array of warship GAs.
- Miyagawa (submissions), primarily for an array of did you knows and good articles, some of which were awarded bonus points.
- Casliber (submissions), due in no small part to Canis Minor, a featured article awarded a total of 340 points. A joint submission with Keilana (submissions), this is the highest scoring single article yet submitted in this year's competition.
Other contributors of note include:
- Sven Manguard (submissions), whose Portal:Massachusetts is the first featured portal this year. The featured portal process is one of the less well-known featured processes, and featured portals have traditionally had little impact on WikiCup scores.
- Sasata (submissions), whose Mycena aurantiomarginata was the first featured article this year.
- Muboshgu (submissions) and Wizardman (submissions), who both claimed points for articles in the Major League Baseball tie-breakers topic, the first topic points in the competition.
- Toa Nidhiki05 (submissions), who claimed for the first full good topic with the Casting Crowns studio albums topic.
Featured topics have still played no part in this year's competition, but once again, a curious contribution has been offered by The C of E (submissions): did you know that there is a Shit Brook in Shropshire? With April Fools' Day during the next round, there will probably be a good chance of more unusual articles...
March sees the WikiWomen's History Month, a series of collaborative efforts to aid the women's history WikiProject to coincide with Women's History Month and International Women's Day. A number of WikiCup participants have already started to take part. The project has a to-do list of articles needing work on the topic of women's history. Those interested in helping out with the project can find articles in need of attention there, or, alternatively, add articles to the list. Those interested in collaborating on articles on women's history are also welcome to use the WikiCup talk page to find others willing to lend a helping hand. Another collaboration currently running is an an effort from WikiCup participants to coordinate a number of Easter-themed did you know articles. Contributions are welcome!
A few final administrative issues. From now on, submission pages will need only a link to the article and a link to the nomination page, or, in the case of good article reviews, a link to the review only. See your submissions' page for details. This will hopefully make updating submission pages a little less tedious. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
