Latest news from the Wikimedia Collaboration team, about Notifications, Flow and Edit Review Improvements. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you.
What's new?
A decision has been made about how the Recent Changes filtering scheme will affect current ORES beta feature users. When this new filtering system rolls out as part of the beta, it will replace the current ORES display on the Recent Changes page. That means the automatic color coding, the red “r” symbol and the “hide probably good edits” filter will go away, to be replaced by the new, more nuanced set of filters and user-defined color coding. All other pages that have ORES features, like Watchlist and Related Changes, will remain as they are now for ORES beta users. We think those pages could also benefit from the new filtering system. But we'll wait to see how users react to the beta test—and make any necessary changes—before we start spreading the new UI around. That's the plan as it currently stands. As always, please let us know if you have any thoughts, in any language.
Edit Review Improvements [More information • Help pages]
Recent changes
- The Filters for Special:RecentChanges description page is now finished and ready for translation.
- On wikis that use ORES, new colors have been chosen for damaging changes displayed on a list of changes. [1]
Notifications [More information • Help pages]
Problems
- Sometimes, after marking an important number of cross-wiki notifications as read, the counter remained at 1. This is now fixed. [2]
Flow [More information • Help pages]
Recent changes
- Due to a bug, it was not possible to activate Flow on user talk pages as a Beta feature. This is possible again for wikis that have that feature. [3]
- Flow boards can be moved without constraints. However, this requires the move-Flow-board right. [4]

Editing Anna Camner page
Hello k6ka! I am trying to save the changes I made to the Anna Camner wiki page. I have added several reliable sources as links to Swedish publications that have reviewed the artist's work, and a link to a private art foundation which has given the artist an award, widely reviewed in Swedish media. I received a comment on my edits from someone here on Wiki, who deleted my changes, saying that my resources are not reliable. What more reliable sources than established Swedish paper and digital publications can I have? Thank you so much in advance for your kind help, Natalia Goldin Lundh Stocksund (talk) 17:05, 19 December 2016 (UTC)stocksund
- Hi Stocksund. I haven't taken a look at the sources you have provided in question just yet, but if it helps, the guideline page on how to identify reliable sources can be found here. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 17:12, 19 December 2016 (UTC)
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Tech News
- Because of the holidays the next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 9 January 2017.
- The writers of the technical newsletter are asking for your opinion. Did you get the information you wanted this year? Did we miss important technical news in 2016? What kind of information was too late? Please tell us! You can write in your language. Thank you!
Recent changes
- Administrators and translation administrators can now use Special:PageLanguage on wikis with the Translate extension. This means you can say what language a page is in. The Translate extension will use that language as the source language when you translate. Previously this was always the wiki's default language. This was usually English. [6]
- Wikis connected to Wikidata can now use the parser function
{{#statements: }}
to get formatted data. You can also use{{#property: }}
to get raw data. You can see the difference between the two statements. There are also similar new functions in Lua. [7]
Problems
- Some abuse filters for uploaded files have not worked as they should. We don't know exactly which filters didn't work yet. This means some files that filters should have prevented from being uploaded were uploaded to the wikis. MediaWiki.org and Testwiki have been affected since 13 October. Commons and Meta have been affected since 17 October. Other wikis have been affected since 17 November. [8]
Changes this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week. There will be no new MediaWiki version next week either.
Meetings
- The next meeting with the VisualEditor team will be on 3 January at 20:00 (UTC). During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. See how to join.
Future changes
- The 2016 Community Wishlist Survey is done. It decides what the Community Tech team will work on during 2017. You can see the results.

A recent that edit you have made.
Hello, you have recently corrected the change that i have made about 'Tyias Browning', the information that i have entered was strictly truth, i am made aware of this truth as i am a close friend of the subject and witnessed the grasps of religion hold him for some time now, i would ask that you reverse the changes you have made as many fans of football that are also christian may see the story of this man and his struggle and take inspiration. Yours Truly, TySuperfanTySuperFan (talk) 21:51, 31 December 2016 (UTC).
- Hi TySuperFan. While you may be a close friend of the subject and may know them personally, on Wikipedia there is no way to properly verify this, as it is fairly easy to simply create an account and pretend to be someone (Much like Facebook and Twitter). Because it is easy for someone to do this, we require that all information added to our articles be properly sourced with a citation; claiming to be someone with credentials or claiming to know a subject personally isn't accepted as a source. This is especially important on articles about people who are alive; policy requires that everything added to such articles needs to be cited with a reliable source, and that any additions without a source can be removed right away. Unlike what many people think, Wikipedia isn't at the forefront of information and it only reports on information that has already been published elsewhere. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 21:59, 31 December 2016 (UTC)

Alteration of user groups
I have removed your membership in the "autpatrolled" group. This is not because you have misused it by creating problematic pages but rather because the admin who granted it seems to have done so out some misguided belief that you needed it when you clearly do not. I have noted as much in your log and hope you understand that this is not a comment on your work here, it simply appears that an admin granted you a user right that you did not need and should not have had. This will have no effect whatsoever on your ability to edit or create new pages. Beeblebrox (talk) 07:01, 3 January 2017 (UTC)

Recent changes
- You can now upload WebP files to Commons. [14]
Problems
- video2commons was down for two weeks. This was because of a problem with Commons video transcoders. It is now back up. [15]
Changes this week
- There is a new magic word called
{{PAGELANGUAGE}}
. It returns the language of the page you are at. This can be used on wikis with more than one language to make it easier for translators. [16] - When an admin blocks a user or deletes or protects a page they give a reason why. They can now get suggestions when they write. The suggestions will be based on the messages in the dropdown menu. [17]
- You will be able to use
<chem>
to write chemical formulas. Before you could use<ce>
.<ce>
should be replaced by<chem>
. [18] - You now can add exceptions for categories which shouldn't be shown on Special:UncategorizedCategories. The list is at MediaWiki:Uncategorized-categories-exceptionlist. [19]
- The "Columns" and "Rows" settings will be removed from the Editing tab in Preferences. If you wish to keep what the "Rows" setting did you can add this code to your personal CSS:
#wpTextbox1 { height: 50em; }
You can change the number50
to make it look like you want to. [20] - Sometimes edits in MediaWiki by mistake are shown coming from private IP addresses such as 127.0.0.1. Edits and other contributions logged to these IP addresses will be blocked and shown the reason from MediaWiki:Softblockrangesreason. This should not affect most users. Bots and other tools running on Wikimedia Labs, including Tool Labs will receive a "blocked" error if they try to edit without being logged in. [21]
- When you edit with the visual editor categories will be on the top of the page options menu. [22]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 17 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 18 January. It will be on all wikis from 19 January (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on January 17 at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.

deleting content about myself
Hi - I'm trying to delete information on a page that was created about me...how do I do this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nicolajriches (talk • contribs) 03:15, 22 January 2017 (UTC)
- @Nicolajriches: I came across your removal of content and have left a message on your talk page with some suggestions. Triptothecottage (talk) 03:24, 22 January 2017 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) Hi Nicolajriches. Articles on Wikipedia aren't "owned" by anyone, so no one person has complete or total control about what happens to that article; this includes the subject of the article itself, if the article is about a living person. That being said, if you have concerns about the article, please see this page for guidance. In all cases you may post your concerns on the article's talk page for other editors to see and comment on. If there are any unsourced material on your article, you are free to remove it since our policy on articles about living persons requires that everything be attributed to a reliable source; however, you can't simply remove or delete an article just because you no longer want it there. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 03:25, 22 January 2017 (UTC)

I appreciate your diligence in monitoring vandalism on Wikipedia. I am a professor at Xavier University of Louisiana and am teaching two courses with Wikipedia. In one of these courses, Freshman Seminar, the students are testing boundaries and decided to contribute fake information to Angela Davis's page in attempt to prove their point that Wikipedia isn't reliable. I am exceptionally grateful for your work and the work of the community members like yourself you immediately corrected their misconception and I am happy to report that buy in for the utility of Wikipedia is already increasing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mosterbur (talk • contribs) 19:52, 27 January 2017 (UTC)

User:RobertPelloni
Hi K6ka. You did a username change for RobertPelloni per his request. Do you think WP:REALNAME is an issue here? The user states he is the same "Robert Pelloni" who designed Bob's Game. He also has a tendency to edit articles he as a COI with. So, it might not be too long before some else notices the similarity between username and real person and tags as a possible problem. Is there a way for Pelloni to verify he is who he says he is to avoid any misunderstandings? Thanks in advance. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:45, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
- @Marchjuly: WP:REALNAME suggests having the user email info-en wikimedia.org; that would probably be the best course of action. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 23:02, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

Username advice
Hi, I have a question regarding a similar username and don't really know much about username policy so thought I would ask here for some advice as I saw you edit the UAA page. I noticed Kosack1 appear today and wondered if there is any action that can be taken for this username? The user has made two edits, one of which was to Buzz Aldrin, which was reverted, a page I have reverted some vandalism on in the last few weeks (not sure if it's related). Thanks. Kosack (talk) 13:20, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
- @Kosack: I've indeffed the user for attempted impersonation given their vandalism; they may have known you through your reverts on the Buzz Aldrin article. Some form of attempted impersonation did occur to me back in the days when I was still an immature but prolific and engaged vandal fighter in 2014... see this ANI thread for details. I was advised to just leave a note at UAA explaining the impersonation; if it's blatantly obvious that they're trying to mock you, I'm sure it'll be blocked right away. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 14:44, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks very much for your help. Kosack (talk) 15:01, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

New language
I live in Canada but I'm a member of small national minority from Serbia and Croatia in Europe called Rusnaci (Rusyns, Ruthenians).
Our language is Slavic, but pretty different from other Rusyn variants of language. Linguists made special name for my nativa language: južnorusinski language (or: južnoruski language). My first logical duty could be to put my native language to the group of languages (left, bottom with title "Languages" ) and after that start with /Main_Page in južnorusinski language where I can put a lot of info and materials about:
južnorusinski language
južnorusinski literature (poetry, novel, short story)
-"- mass media ( newspapers, magazines, annual books; TV, Radio, Internet websites...)
-"- education: preschool, school, high school, Department of južnorusinski language and literature at University of Novi Sad, Serbia
-"- GCI church (Greek Catholic church) - religious life
-"- Theater
Topographical use of južnorusinski language etc
I need /Main_page to open for start.
Can you help mi to do this? With advice, or tell me where I can find instruction how I can register a NEW language on Wikipedia G. Koljesar 02:38, 6 February 2017 (UTC)Keresturec — Preceding unsigned comment added by Keresturec (talk • contribs)

Latest news from the Wikimedia Collaboration team, about Notifications, Flow and Edit Review Improvements. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you.
What's new?
Flow satisfaction survey’s results are available. The survey provides useful data on what users like and don't like about Flow. This information will be helpful in discussions recently begun as part of the editing team's Annual Plan process. As the editing team investigates its priorities for next fiscal year (which begins in July), many ideas for improvements have been suggested, including projects to research the future of wiki discussions and to fix Flow's shortcomings.
Edit Review Improvements [More information • Help pages]
- Huggle users are asked to share their feedback concerning proposed improvements for Huggle.
Notifications [More information • Help pages]
- Flow notifications category in the Notification Preferences page will be changed from (in English) "Flow" to "Flow Discussion". Messages that have to be updated on TranslateWiki are echo-category-title-flow-discussion and echo-pref-tooltip-flow-discussion. [41]
- Mentions were not recognized when more than one section is added during the same edit or when an new section was added and a change (new message or deletion) was done in another section. This is now solved. [42]
Flow [More information • Help pages]
- Rich text mode is now the default in Flow replies. Some inconsistencies used to exist. Now the preference between visual mode and wikitext mode is updated when a content change is made in the selected editor, literally when it is typed in, not when it is saved or when the editor is switched. [43]
- We plan to change Flow's URLs to make them more human readable. Your feedback is still welcome, the conversation will be closed on February 28th.

Guild of Copy Editors February 2017 News
Guild of Copy Editors February 2017 News
Hello everyone, and welcome to the February 2017 GOCE newsletter. The Guild has been busy since the last time your coordinators sent out a newsletter! December blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 11 through 17 December; the themes were Requests and eliminating the November 2015 backlog. Of the 14 editors who signed up, nine editors completed 29 articles. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all who took part. January drive: The January drive was a great success. We set out to remove December 2015 and January and February 2016 from our backlog (195 articles), and by 22 January we had cleared those and had to add a third month (March 2016). At the end of the month we had almost cleared out that last month as well, for a total of 180 old articles removed from the backlog! We reduced our overall backlog by 337 articles, to a low of 1,465 articles, our second-lowest month-end total ever. We also handled all of the remaining requests from December 2016. Officially, 19 editors recorded 337 copy edits (over 679,000 words). February blitz: The one-week February blitz, focusing on the remaining March 2016 backlog and January 2017 requests, ran from 12 to 18 February. Seven editors reduced the total in those two backlog segments from 32 to 10 articles, leaving us in good shape going in to the March drive. Coordinator elections for the first half of 2017: In December, coordinators for the first half of 2017 were elected. Jonesey95 stepped aside as lead coordinator, remaining as coordinator and allowing Miniapolis to be the lead, and Tdslk and Corinne returned as coordinators. Thanks to all who participated! Speaking of coordinators, congratulations to Jonesey95 on their well-deserved induction into the Guild of Copy Editors Hall of Fame. The plaque reads: "For dedicated service as lead coordinator (2014, 1 July – 31 December 2015 and all of 2016) and coordinator (1 January – 30 June 2015 and 1 January – 30 June 2017); exceptional template-creation work (considerably streamlining project administration), and their emphasis on keeping the GOCE a drama-free zone." Housekeeping note: We do not send a newsletter before every drive or blitz. To have a better chance of knowing when the next event will start, add the GOCE's message box to your watchlist. Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Miniapolis, Jonesey95, Corinne and Tdslk. To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list.

- On 22 February the wikipedia.org portal did not work for an hour. This was because of a problem with a JavaScript file. [48]
Changes this week
- You will be able to use
<chem>
to write chemical formulas in the visual editor. Previously this only worked in the wikitext editor. [49] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 28 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 1 March. It will be on all wikis from 2 March (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 28 February at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- You can soon upload 3D files to Commons. The file formats are AMF and STL. The plan is for this to work later this week but it could be later. [50]
- The name "Wikipedia" will be more obvious at the top of the page when you read Wikipedia in the mobile view. This is because many readers don't realize they are on Wikipedia. [51][52]

Administrators' newsletter – March 2017
News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2017).
- Amortias • Deckiller • BU Rob13
- Ronnotel • Islander • Chamal N • Isomorphic • Keeper76 • Lord Voldemort • Shereth • Bdesham • Pjacobi
- A recent RfC has redefined how articles on schools are evaluated at AfD. Specifically, secondary schools are not presumed to be notable simply because they exist.
- AfDs that receive little participation should now be closed like an expired proposed deletion, following a deletion process RfC.
- Defender, HakanIST, Matiia and Sjoerddebruin are our newest stewards, following the 2017 steward elections.
- The 2017 appointees for the Ombudsman commission are Góngora, Krd, Lankiveil, Richwales and Vogone. They will serve for approximately 1 year.
- A recent query shows that only 16% of administrators on the English Wikipedia have enabled two-factor authentication. If you haven't already enabled it please consider doing so.
- Cookie blocks should be deployed to the English Wikipedia soon. This will extend the current autoblock system by setting a cookie for each block, which will then autoblock the user after they switch accounts under a new IP.
- A bot will now automatically place a protection template on protected pages when admins forget to do so.
March 2017 WikiCup newsletter
And so ends the first round of the competition, with 4 points required to qualify for round 2. It would have been 5 points, but when a late entrant was permitted to join the contest in February, a promise was made that his inclusion would not result in the exclusion of any other competitor. To achieve this, the six entrants that had the lowest positive score of 4 points have been added to the 64 people who otherwise would have qualified. As a result, some of the groups have nine contestants rather than eight. Our top four scorers in round 1 were:
- Cas Liber, last year's winner, led the field with two featured articles on birds and a total score of 674.
- Iry-Hor, a WikiCup newcomer, came next with a featured article, a good article and a tally of 282 bonus points for a score of 517. All these points came from the article Nyuserre Ini, an Ancient Egyptian pharaoh,
- 1989, another WikiCup newcomer, was in joint third place at 240. 1989 has claimed points for two featured lists and one good article relating to anime and comedy series, all of which were awarded bonus points.
- Peacemaker67 shared third place with five good articles and thirteen good article reviews, mostly on naval vessels. He is also new to the competition.
The largest number of DYKs have been submitted by Vivvt and The C of E, who each claimed for seven, and MBlaze Lightning achieved eight articles at ITN. Carbrera and Peacemaker67 each claimed for five GAs and Krishna Chaitanya Velaga was well out in front for GARs, having reviewed 32. No featured pictures, featured topics or good topics yet, but we have achieved three featured articles and a splendid total of fifty good articles.
So, on to the second round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article candidate, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Problems
- Some watchlist gadgets didn't work for a period of time last week. This has now been fixed. [55]
- Admins who click on "mass delete" on a user's Special:Contributions will be taken directly to a list pages created by that user. It has worked like this before, but not lately. [56]
Changes this week
- The way you switch between wikitext and the visual editors in the desktop view has changed. It is now a drop-down menu. This is the same as in the mobile view. [57]
- The "flag the edit in the abuse log" checkbox will be removed from the abuse filter interface. This is because the edits are always flagged in the abuse log. [58]

You blocked this user a few hours ago for going on a blanking rampage; they've since reverted your and my attempts to keep the shared IP template on their talk. I can't go to AIV because, since they're already blocked, the bot will automatically wipe my report. (For that matter, I can't find a policy or guideline on whether or not IP users can remove these notices.) CityOfSilver 18:31, 8 March 2017 (UTC)
- @CityOfSilver: WP:REMOVED says that these notices can't be removed; however, restoring these notices is also not a listed exception of 3RR. I initially revoked their talk page access, then thought twice and decided to restore it again. Since they're continuing their disruptive edits, I've decided to pull it for now. Requests to remove talk page access from a blocked user can be submitted to WP:ANI. Thanks for letting me know about this. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 18:39, 8 March 2017 (UTC)
I do not know how to reply to your answer here, but my answer is yes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 46.120.213.134 (talk) 17:51, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
- Sorry, "Yes" to what? To respond to a question there, please log in to your account, click on the "Edit" button next to the title of your request, and then add your comments at the bottom of the editing window. The requests page works similarly to a talk page.
- Since I don't know who you are (As you did not log in), nor do I even know what request you are referring to, I cannot do anything else at this time. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 17:55, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
Can you help me to remove my ip for. This list? It;$ protected. 83.31.59.25 (talk) 22:15, 11 March 2017 (UTC)
- I see that you have already filed a report at Wikipedia:Edit_filter/False_positives/Reports#83.31.59.25 and an administrator has responded to your comments there. I'd have to ask the same question. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 22:19, 11 March 2017 (UTC)

Changes this week
- You will be able to show references from
<references />
tags in more than one column on your wiki. This is the list of footnotes for the sources in the article. How many columns you see will depend on how big your screen is. On some wikis, some templates already do this. Templates that use<references />
tags will need to be updated, and then later the change can happen for all reference lists. [59][60] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 March. It will be on all wikis from 16 March (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 14 March at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- Some old web browsers will not be able to use JavaScript on Wikimedia wikis in the future. If you have an old web browser on your computer you can upgrade to a newer version. [61]
- CSS in templates will be stored in a separate page in the future. [62][63]

Recent changes
- The
Save page

on the Wikimedia wikis except for Wikipedias and Wikinewses. This change will come to Wikipedias later. The point is to make it more clear that the edit will change the page immediately.Publish page
is when you save a new page andPublish changes
when you edit an existing page. [70] - DMOZ no longer works. Templates that use DMOZ can be redirected to archive.org or another mirror. DMOZ has been removed from the RelatedSites extension on Wikivoyage. [71]
- You can see monthly page views when you click on
Page information
in the sidebar. Developers can also get monthly page views through the API. [72] - The Linter extension is now on smaller Wikimedia wikis. It helps editors find some wikitext errors so they can be fixed. It will come to other Wikimedia wikis later. The extension will be able to find more errors later. [73]
- The MediaWiki-Vagrant portable development environment has been updated to use Debian Jessie. This means local development and testing will be more like on the majority of Wikimedia production servers. [74]
Problems
- On 15 March some interwiki links to other languages were not correctly sorted. This has been fixed. If you still see pages where the interwiki links are not sorted as they should be, they should be fixed automatically with time or you can edit the page and save it without changing anything. If this doesn't work, please report it. [75]
Changes this week
- When you edit with the visual editor, you will be able to switch the direction you write in from right-to-left to left-to-right as you are editing. This is especially important for editors who edit in languages that write from right to left. You can do this with a tool in the editing menu. You can also use the keyboard shortcut
Ctrl

on PCs orCmd

on Macs. [76] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 21 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 22 March. It will be on all wikis from 23 March (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 21 March at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.
