December 2014 edit

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, your addition of one or more external links to the page Julian Pettifer has been reverted.
Your edit here to Julian Pettifer was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove links which are discouraged per our external links guideline. The external link(s) you added or changed (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-7DzMTh54O_u88X9XQgWmQ) is/are on my list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia. If the external link you inserted or changed was to a media file (e.g. a sound or video file) on an external server, then note that linking to such files may be subject to Wikipedia's copyright policy, as well as other parts of our external links guideline. If the information you linked to is indeed in violation of copyright, then such information should not be linked to. Please consider using our upload facility to upload a suitable media file, or consider linking to the original.
If you were trying to insert an external link that does comply with our policies and guidelines, then please accept my creator's apologies and feel free to undo the bot's revert. However, if the link does not comply with our policies and guidelines, but your edit included other, constructive, changes to the article, feel free to make those changes again without re-adding the link. Please read Wikipedia's external links guideline for more information, and consult my list of frequently-reverted sites. For more information about me, see my FAQ page. THE Julian Pettifer edit

Hello Julian, Welcome to Wikipedia, although it may not feel like it. Please let me apologise on behalf of other bona fide editors, but first...

To all those whom it may concern, this user is THE Julian Pettifer. His innate politeness, clarity of writing and integrity, (combined with unfamiliarity with Wikipedia protocols) could only be the mark of the renowned BBC journalist. So please, even the bots, refrain from simplistic reverting where possible and try offering help - it will be rewarded by a better quality article.

Hello Julian, I have watched your professional progress since the late 1950s, when I was a very young lad watching Southern Television (on a receiver that was the wages of sin). My reversion of your edit was less polite than it should have been, but there are so so many experimenters, jokers, bored juveniles at school and pure vandals that this may have been only the second time 20,000 edits where I have been inappropriately terse. Oops.

Firstly, your user page is blank so you come up Red, often a warning sign of a bored juvenile joker. Try adding a small amount of text to demonstrate your integrity. I can't tell you what to write, but even a piece as short as User:Les woodland has the ring of truth.

Conflict of interest - this is a common problem here, but if you are simply, openly, clarifying misunderstandings then you should be OK. I hope that the many editors who are experienced in this can offer you better advice. (I concentrate on building articles, and know little of policies.)

Sources - all text that is not directly associated with valid third party sources is liable to be removed, especially in articles where Biography of Living Persons (BLP)] applies. Mostly it won't be removed but will be tagged with [citation needed] and then remain for a few months.

Inappropriate links to external sites embedded in the body of the article - mostly this is a no no. Wiki is not a link directory and is often heavily policed to remove spam and commercial or self-aggrandising links. Your YouTube channel is neither of those, but it is YouTube which means that it does not qualify as an independently verified third party source. ...But since the content comprises third party (BBC) broadcasts I would argue that it is appropriate (your introductory kitchen scenes excepted) and that perhaps, in time, another editor/supervisor may adopt/mentor you and contribute the correct justification terminology. p.s. Don't get into a revert war, it can be fatal for you - I now watch your article and will possibly revert and ameliorate next time.

Regards, welcome and good luck. Chienlit (talk) 11:56, 9 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
