Puerto rico birds

I have a look at ik later today. I think some clarification is actually needed with the introduced species, as the current wording could suggest they are natives. I did one only to realise that there are many of those. I think you are doing a good job! Kim van der Linde at venus 17:37, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

You're now an admin, have fun helping the place out with your new tools. I'd recommend being conservative with them, especially at first. Re-read the policies before acting and post anything potentially controversial on the administrators noticeboard before jumping so you can get the benefit of experience. 2006 Puerto Rico budget crisis

Hi! I think the article needs some grammatical corrections, and some references are needed in some assumptions, such as who's fault is it (PPD vs. PNP). Overall, I've rephrased certain paragraphs, to make it look more objective, such as the introductory paragraph.

I also believe there should be a section dedicated exclusively to the public outcry (from non-profit organizations to labor unions to civil marches and protests), and more information on the Legislature's efforts to dissuade the public that a sales tax isn't needed (group the 5% corporate tax and the other numerous efforts by President Aponte to find additional funds).

That's why I think it needs cleanup. But if you feel differently, feel free to delete the template. Since this is still a current event, this article is always subject to change and cleanup.

P.S. Has anyone started an article about the P.R. Tax and fiscal reform? Mtmelendez 16:10, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the feedback, but... damn periods. I'll add it to my list of things to fix up next time round. Can you point me to an example of an article using ref_harv style? Puerto Rico article

You suck! Making false history and trying to keep it on before the world! I will keep putting the truth up. When I do use cites(like you showed us how, like anyone else does), I bet that you will pull that too and make excuses. It is clear that you so-called 'boriquas' want to fabricate a false history and identity. Uncle Tomism in Puerto-Rico

This sickness has Puerto-Ricans thinking that they are white because they are 'mualttoized' and white is popular. Their culture (like much of the 3rd world)is one that goes with what is popular. Reggaeton is popular, so now PR's don't mind identifying with their blackness for a little while anyway. The practice of Uncle Tomsim, as well as Wikipedia editora erasing anything that does not fit their opinion has to stop. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.177.204.127 (talkcontribs)

GA as a step for FA

Have you ever sent an article to FA. If yes, you probably understand that not all article will ever achieve the FA status. Because the FA people don't think that all article should achieve FA, like the small ones for example, like the biaised titled ones (even if they meet all of WPs criterias, ex: Jylland-Posten article) and many more. Lincher 00:10, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

And what about the other classes of articles like B-class, A-class in the Assessment scale, drop them too. We are trying to create a way for readers (not the editors) to know and be aware of the quality of articles and since there are more untouched stubs than there are of other classes, the readers are bound to read those and think of the encyclopedia as being unworthy of the work that's been done in other portion of the WP, like the FAs (only 1000), like the GAs (only 1100). We want to bring a review like style to the articles so that the readers (and its on them that we should focus) will know the quality of the article they are reading. Lincher 00:35, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
Because the GA is part of the assessment scale and thus, we have to keep in mind that there are already steps toward FA promotion though still not official and way not universal on wikipedia. And making GA a real step toward FA will help the assessment scale because instead of perusing through the whole encyclopedia to rate the articles, the articles come to the GA for this assessment. Gallery of Martin Luther Images

Thanks for dropping by! I do not take these things personally and I appreciate people being straightforward on issues they see.

I'm a bit confused, however. I do not view this page as a repository of images or a mere collection of links. This page is a deliberate grouping of images directly related to Martin Luther. The page was created to relieve overcrowding at page Martin Luther. They all illustrate facets of Luther's life. It is not intended to be a dumping ground of images, which what I thought the policy was trying to prevent. I've viewed it as similar to galleries that are in several places around Wikipedia, especially artist galleries. Are you saying that the rules prohibit such deliberate exhibits? --CTSWyneken 01:10, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

Hmm... never thought of a cat. Thanks! I'll go that way. --CTSWyneken 02:30, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

Elfin Woods Warbler

Hi. Congrats on reaching FA status. One small point, there are lots of redlinks in the article - some of these are easily fixable using redirects, others would require an article (but a stub is OK). Would you be up for fixing this? SP-KP 11:51, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

The MunicipalityPR infobox

Joel, there's one minor(?) issue with the infobox you designed. You use as a variable name official_name, assuming that a Puerto Rican town's given name is the official name. You then proceed to reuse the variable at at least three other areas within the template. I suggest that you use another one, common_name, as to distinguish between the formal, official name of a town and the name used everyday by everyone. Case in point: there is a difference between Mayagüez (common name) and "Excelente Ciudad de Mayagüez" (formal name). Same with, say "San Germán" and "Villa de San Germán de Auxerre", and so on. That will bring a need to fix the help for the template, but it is better than leaving it as is. Don't you agree? Demf 21:47, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

  • Joel, you are right. I think the summer heat is getting to my head. I changed to support. Tony the Marine 01:59, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

You are required to assume good faith

You have no right to attack people and call them disrupters without giving evidence of such a thing and without giving a specific example of what the so-called disruption is. You are in violation of the WP:Assume good faith policy. This is a free and open website that advertises itself as one that "anyone can edit" and I am free to give an opinion without being continually harrassed by over-zealous administrators. I demand you show what specific POLICY I am in violation of --and don't point out a vague guideline that is subject to interpretation and of which is fluid in its enforcement.--Jayzel 18:19, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the list guidelines (which are not written in stone). Now try explaining which of these:
Disruption
Sysops may block IP addresses or usernames that disrupt the normal functioning of Wikipedia, or pose any kind of threat to it. Such disruption may include (but is not limited to) changing other users' signed comments, making deliberately misleading edits, harassment, excessive personal attacks, and inserting material that may be defamatory. Users will normally be warned before they are blocked.
Sysops may also block new user accounts that make lots of disruptive edits. Reincarnations of blocked disruptive users are likely to be re-blocked, particularly if they edit in a way that suggests they are likely to continue being disruptive.
...I violated. Having a different opinion from you is not a violation of Wikipedia policy and not grounds for continuing to violate official policy against Wikipedia:Harrassment. Have a good day. Regards, --Jayzel 18:57, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
With all due respect, your comments about me "taking the legal route" are amusing. The administrators here are hypocrites. Guidelines, instructions, and policies for you all are fluid and subject to interpretation (and if anyone questions this they are called "ninnes"), but the same said policies are written in stone for other editors with threats of blocking if we even so much as approach violating the spirit of a guideline never mind a policy. This is farsical. Raul can go on enforcing his fluid FA guidelines and you can continue threatening people for pointing out the emperor has no clothes. I'm restricting my activity to watching the articles I wrote. Ciao, --Jayzel 19:46, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

List of Puerto Ricans

One of the main concerns about the "list" is that it is getting out of control and that many names of people who have only had their "15 minutes of fame" or simply are non-notables are being added. I propose that we set up guidelines as to who should be admitted with a clear definition as to the terms "notable" and "fame". I am calling upon the parties interested to express their opinion and to help develope these guidelines. I believe that after we take a vote and reach a censensus, said guidelines should be followed and posted either on the article or the articles talk page. We need your help. boricuas

how do i propose to change the name of Category:Puerto Rican people to Category:Boricuas ?? Qrc2006 23:49, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

Boricua is not slang. Angelinos for People from Los Angeles is far more slang. Boricua is the correct and proper term preffered by most people from puerto rico its based on the Taino name for the island Boricuaito.Qrc2006 02:22, 6 July 2006 (UTC) oh and thanks for not answering my question. that was really nice. dork.

Puerto Rican endemics

Hi Joel. I recently came across a paper from Anegada in which they found several plant species believed to be Puerto Rican endemics. Which makes me think again that the lists of Puerto Rican endemics should be changed to lists of species that are endemic to the Puerto Rican Bank (Pleistocene Greater Puerto Rico), since it is a much more meaningful biological province (they were united at the time when most of these species evoloved). We could then specificy which islands they are found in. That would, IMO, make a more stable list (since it avoids having to remove species when they are found on surveys of additional islands). The only problem that I could forsee is Mona - I don't know for certain whether it is part of the PR Bank or not. Easily verifiable, but it would create some confusion if it wasn't part of the PR Bank. But I think it would be possible to finesse that issue. Any thoughts/objections? Guettarda 22:53, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

I could see five alternatives

  1. Don't change anything
  2. Leave the articles where they are, but add "endemic to Puerto Rico or the Puerto Rican Bank" (and specify which islands they are found on; maybe like I did for the [List of snakes of Trinidad and Tobago]])
  3. Move the article to "Endemics of the PR Bank" and remove the Mona iguana (without looking, this might work fine for plants)
  4. Split the article into PR and PR Bank
  5. Follow the old "Scientific Survey of Porto Rico and the Virgin Islands" - call it "endemics of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands" and spend a few lines explaining why one should lump them together.

Obviously readability and usefulness are what matter most. I'd be inclined to either go with #2 or #5 - include Mona, St Croix and Desecheo. Guettarda 22:36, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

Thank-you

Joel, this is one of the nicest compliments I've ever received on the Wiki. Thank-you! I don't believe people who edit a lot want a barnstar a day or extra congratulation. Noticing people notice your work is good enough. And on that topic, you've made some very fine contributions yourself. So keep up the good work (and keep watching FAR). Melodyguild article deletion

You have twice deleted an entry for the band, Melodyguild. I understand your POV that the band has no major relevance to the pop music industry, however I want to point out their relevance to the underground music scene. The singer, Suzanne Perry, is highly revered in the Gothic, Ethereal, Darkwave, and Dream Pop communities. She and her former band, Love Spirals Downwards, are often mentioned online and elsewhere as a cornerstone of the genre. Her previous band are the most popular on their label, Projekt, which is the preeminent label of the genre. Because her prior work qualifies for Wikipedia inclusion, her new band should be of interest, as well. I know that people often search the Internet to find out what became of her and what she is working on now, so I created the article for them to discover. Their band site went down, though it is still available on the Internet Archive project. Once again, I totally understand your reasoning, but please consider mine, as well. I tried very hard to include as many points of reference to the relevant Gothic, Ethereal, Darkwave, and Dream Pop icons that make this article interesting to those communities.--Whitebird 20:29, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

As I mentioned, one member qualifies due to: 2 or more albums on an important indie label, being a prominent representative of their genre, and was the subject of (3) half hour or longer broadcasts on a nationally syndicated radio program. so, since she qualifies, then her side-project qualifies. i don't know how to do a "re-direct" if you would prefer i do that. i am a newbie! but please do not speedy delete my article when i repost it.--Whitebird 21:05, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
The band would qualify due to: Contains at least one member who was once a part of or later joined a band that is otherwise notable. Thanks for replying speedily, btw.--Whitebird 21:14, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
