The insignia for the 12th W-SS Panzer division is indeed a stylized key. The German word for key is 'dietrich' which you may recognize as a senior W-SS officer. Thus the insignia was a pun on his name, and also indicative of the derivation of the division's cadre from the early W-SS units commanded by Dietrich that also used a key insignia.
