Did you know?

Did you know that you can review your changes visually?

When you are finished editing the page, type your edit summary and then choose "Review your changes".

In visual mode, you will see additions, removals, new links, and formatting highlighted. Other changes, such as changing the size of an image, are described in notes on the side.

Click the toggle button to switch between visual and wikitext diffs.

The wikitext diff is the same diff tool that is used in the wikitext editors and in the page history.

You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has spent most of their time supporting the 2017 wikitext editor mode which is available inside the visual editor as a Beta Feature, and adding the new visual diff tool. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. You can find links to the work finished each week at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Their current priorities are fixing bugs, supporting the 2017 wikitext editor as a beta feature, and improving the visual diff tool.

Recent changes

A new wikitext editing mode is available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices. The 2017 wikitext editor has the same toolbar as the visual editor and can use the citoid service and other modern tools. Go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures to enable the ⧼Visualeditor-preference-newwikitexteditor-label⧽.

A new visual diff tool is available in VisualEditor's visual mode. You can toggle between wikitext and visual diffs. More features will be added to this later. In the future, this tool may be integrated into other MediaWiki components. [1]

The team have added multi-column support for lists of footnotes. The <references /> block can automatically display long lists of references in columns on wide screens. This makes footnotes easier to read. You can request multi-column support for your wiki. [2]

Other changes:

 • You can now use your web browser's function to switch typing direction in the new wikitext mode. This is particularly helpful for RTL language users like Urdu or Hebrew who have to write JavaScript or CSS. You can use Command+Shift+X or Control+Shift+X to trigger this. [3]
 • The way to switch between the visual editing mode and the wikitext editing mode is now consistent. There is a drop-down menu that shows the two options. This is now the same in desktop and mobile web editing, and inside things that embed editing, such as Flow. [4]
 • The Categories item has been moved to the top of the Page options menu (from clicking on the   icon) for quicker access. [5] There is also now a "Templates used on this page" feature there. [6]
 • You can now create <chem> tags (sometimes used as <ce>) for chemical formulas inside the visual editor. [7]
 • Tables can be set as collapsed or un-collapsed. [8]
 • The Special character menu now includes characters for Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics and angle quotation marks (‹› and ⟨⟩) . The team thanks the volunteer developer, Tpt. [9]
 • A bug caused some section edit conflicts to blank the rest of the page. This has been fixed. The team are sorry for the disruption. [10]
 • There is a new keyboard shortcut for citations: Control+Shift+K on a PC, or Command+Shift+K on a Mac. It is based on the keyboard shortcut for making links, which is Control+K on a PC or Command+K on a Mac. [11]

Future changes

 • The VisualEditor team is working with the Community Tech team on a syntax highlighting tool. It will highlight matching pairs of <ref> tags and other types of wikitext syntax. You will be able to turn it on and off. It will first become available in VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode, maybe late in 2017. [12]
 • The kind of button used to Show preview, Show changes, and finish an edit will change in all WMF-supported wikitext editors. The new buttons will use OOjs UI. The buttons will be larger, brighter, and easier to read. The labels will remain the same. You can test the new button by editing a page and adding &ooui=1 to the end of the URL, like this: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Project:Sandbox?action=edit&ooui=1 The old appearance will no longer be possible, even with local CSS changes. [13]
 • The outdated 2006 wikitext editor will be removed later this year. It is used by approximately 0.03% of active editors. See a list of editing tools on mediawiki.org if you are uncertain which one you use. [14]

@Whatamidoing (WMF): Are there any plans to make VisualEditor available on talk pages? Jarble (talk) 19:29, 9 May 2017 (UTC)

Old AFD notices

Hi, Jarble. I see you've added old AfD notices on Talk:Cobra (programming language) and Talk:Alice (programming language). Please be careful on those.

The AfD for Cobra (programming language) was in 2006, and was for a completely different article on a completely different computer language, Cobra (programming language from Squeaky Duck). At that time, the article you tagged lived at Cobra (programming language from Cobra Language LLC). After the Squeaky Duck language's article was deleted, there was no need to disambiguate further than "(computer language)", so the Cobra Language LLC article was moved, in 2011. The 2006 AfD does not apply to this article, which wasn't at this name until five years later.

On Alice (programming language): Yes, there was an AfD, and it ended in delete, but it didn't stop there. It went on to Deletion Review and the deletion was overturned. If you're going to note the AfD, you have to note the DRV as well.

In general, if you see an article that seems to have been deleted at AfD, but is still around, there's likely a good reason for that; do a little digging to see if there's some factor you haven't considered, and take the results into account when determining whether, and how, to mark the AfD. Thanks! TJRC (talk) 00:57, 23 May 2017 (UTC)

broken redirect for worldnews.nbcnews.com

@Jarble: This is kind of after the fact, but how about holding off on adding "deadurl=yes" to every link to "worldnews.nbcnews.com". I have sent an email to the technical contact, hopefully they'll be able to fix this once they become aware of the problem. Fabrickator (talk) 02:28, 25 May 2017 (UTC)

@Fabrickator: Today, I also found several broken links to sciencenow.sciencemag.org. Jarble (talk) 15:31, 29 May 2017 (UTC)
@Jarble: Unfortunately, many sites move links around, and appealing to the site operator to revert to those earlier links is probably unlikely to be successful. In the case of "worldnews.nbcnews.com", there was an apparently incorrect redirect (still waiting for a response from them, but I haven't lost hope). When sites do move a page, I think it's preferable to update to a live link on the same website (or at least a site managed by the same entity). The google "site:" search parameter usually makes it easy to find the new url that the link has moved to, but this doesn't avoid the need to modify each page for which the link has changed. Speedy deletion nomination of Draft:India and state-sponsored terrorism

Do not create articles about living people that are entirely negative in tone and unsourced. Wikipedia has a policy of verifiability and any negative information we use must be reliably sourced, and our articles must be balanced. Negative, unreferenced biographies of living people are not tolerated by Wikipedia and are speedily deleted. Under section G10 of the criteria for speedy deletion, the page has been nominated for deletion. Users who continue to create or repost such pages and images in violation of our biographies of living persons policy may be blocked from editing.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. IM3847 (talk) 08:18, 11 June 2017 (UTC)

Your draft article, Draft:India and state-sponsored terrorism

Hello, Jarble. It has been over six months since you last edited your Articles for Creation draft article submission, "India and state-sponsored terrorism".

In accordance with our policy that Articles for Creation is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the db-afc or db-g13 code.

Not a sockpuppet

Hi, I'm not a sockpuppet. This is my work account for Wiki Education, so it falls under the acceptable reasons for me to have an alt account. My main account is also listed on my profile page and my alternate accounts are listed on my main account's userpage as well, so everything is kosher.

The reason I marked the page with those tags is because it needed improvement - it was one of several pages that had been edited by one of the classes supported by WikiEd. One of the students that edited this page added content that could be helpful, however it was written like a personal reflection essay or academic paper. Rather than write the content in a neutral, encyclopedic tone, they wrote it in a style intended to persuade the reader to see things from their point of view and looked to have included some mild original research as well. (On a side note they also name dropped studies but didn't give the full names of the researchers, something that's not entirely helpful since the researchers' names are fairly common ones and it makes it harder to link to their articles if they have one.) They also had some issues with sourcing, as they tried to source their additions to things like Wikipedia itself. It's mostly stuff that would've been perfectly fine in something they were writing for class (minus using Wikipedia as a source - I don't know any teachers would be OK with that), but not so good for Wikipedia. A look at the page shows that the overall article needs to get a facelift. It's not that the information in the page or the information added by the student is particularly wrong, just that it needs to be re-tooled to fit Wikipedia's MoS. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 12:43, 26 June 2017 (UTC)

@Shalor (Wiki Ed): I didn't realize that you had added any tags, but I apparently confused them with a previous set of tags that were added by a sockpuppet account. Thanks for correcting my mistake. Jarble (talk) 19:14, 26 June 2017 (UTC)

Your tagging as dead links references which have simply had their URL changed. I'm reverting all your dead links tags so that you can fix them. Beyond My Ken (talk) 02:05, 27 August 2017 (UTC)

@Beyond My Ken: I tagged them as dead links because they have been redirected to other pages that have no relevance to the original citations. Is there another cleanup tag that we can use for incorrect links like this one? Jarble (talk) 04:07, 27 August 2017 (UTC)
Don't tag them, fix them. These are links to the New York Observer, which has obviously changed its URL system. You need to put the title of the article into Google, retrieve the new URL, and plug it into the link. Beyond My Ken (talk) 07:29, 27 August 2017 (UTC)
@Beyond My Ken: I'd prefer to keep these cleanup tags for future reference so that they won't be overlooked. There are hundreds of links that may need to be updated, so it would be very tedious to update all of them manually. It might be worthwhile to discuss this at WP:Bot requests. Jarble (talk) 15:52, 27 August 2017 (UTC)
Yes, tedious, but no more tedious than tagging them. Simple: don't tag them unless you have taken the time to fix them and haven't been able to do so. Beyond My Ken (talk) 17:26, 27 August 2017 (UTC)

@Cyberpower678: Can we configure the Internet Archive Bot to update these links so that we won't need to update them manually? Jarble (talk) 17:37, 27 August 2017 (UTC)

It will only archive them. Changing URLs is beyond IABot's scope.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 18:28, 27 August 2017 (UTC)
@Jarble: It's better that 6 links are fixed than that 24 are tagged, and the time involved would be about the same. Fixing them solves a problem, tagging them only puts it off for someone else to do. You may have to get your hands dirty. Beyond My Ken (talk) 19:43, 27 August 2017 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons

I uploaded a photo on the Wiki Commons Upload Wizard but it was automatically deleted. Please why? Abdulmalik2000 (talk) 17:51, 10 September 2017 (UTC)

Hello Jarble, I have found a broken link on the page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_experience .The broken link on the page is in the References, point number 6 http://www.adaptivepath.com/ideas/e000862/. It has been redirected to a new page http://adaptivepath.org/ideas/e000862/. Please do the needful so that the visitors will land on the appropriate page. Regards, Akshay Shah.

@Akshayshah0030: I corrected this link, but I also found several other links to this site that need to be updated. Jarble (talk) 13:54, 19 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi, I removed a link you added to Red light camera. A URL that identifies its host by IP address will appear to cautious users to be a malware site and, in any event, it doesn't identify the source as a reliable one. Largoplazo (talk) 19:17, 19 September 2017 (UTC)

@Largoplazo: This was the only open-access link for this article that I was able to find on Google Scholar. Why wouldn't this source be reliable? Jarble (talk) 19:19, 19 September 2017 (UTC)
Well, the paper itself might be reliable, but from a cybersecurity perspective it's bad practice to send people to material on anonymous websites. No one savvy about such things would click a link with a URL like that. If the website were intended to be accessed by the general public, it ought to have an identifiable name. I guess there isn't a Wikipedia guideline on this, but a sense of caution compelled me to take it off until I had at least discussed it with you. Largoplazo (talk) 21:08, 19 September 2017 (UTC)

Minor edits

Hi, please don't mark edits as minor unless they satisfy all the requirements shown at Help:Minor edit. For example, this, being a new thread, and this, being a fresh post to an existing thread, would both come under Help:Minor edit#When not to mark as minor changes, fourth bullet. Looking back through your last fifty contributions, I see that you marked 43 of them as a minor edit, many of which did not qualify. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 09:05, 28 October 2017 (UTC)

ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, Jarble. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)

A page you started (Anti-abortion terrorists) has been reviewed!

Thanks for creating Anti-abortion terrorists, Jarble!

Wikipedia editor Gatemansgc just reviewed your page, and wrote this note for you:

Considering the fact that the article itself has a terrorism template, this is a reasonable redirect that I don't think anyone will question, and I'm surprised didn't already exist.

I don't have any bots that does search and replace functions with URLs. InternetArchiveBot looks for dead URLs and replaces them with archive URLs. That's a fully automated process though. Perhaps Nihlus or Jon Kolbert or Magioladitis can help out there.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 14:38, 31 December 2017 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Desalination, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Garden Island (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Did you know?

Did you know that you can now use the visual diff tool on any page?

Sometimes, it is hard to see important changes in a wikitext diff. This screenshot of a wikitext diff (click to enlarge) shows that the paragraphs have been rearranged, but it does not highlight the removal of a word or the addition of a new sentence.

If you enable the Beta Feature for "⧼visualeditor-preference-visualdiffpage-label⧽", you will have a new option. It will give you a new box at the top of every diff page. This box will let you choose either diff system on any edit.

Click the toggle button to switch between visual and wikitext diffs.

In the visual diff, additions, removals, new links, and formatting changes will be highlighted. Other changes, such as changing the size of an image, are described in notes on the side.

This screenshot shows the same edit as the wikitext diff. The visual diff highlights the removal of one word and the addition of a new sentence. An arrow indicates that the paragraph changed location.

You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has spent most of their time supporting the 2017 wikitext editor mode, which is available inside the visual editor as a Beta Feature, and improving the visual diff tool. Their work board is available in Phabricator. You can find links to the work finished each week at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Their current priorities are fixing bugs, supporting the 2017 wikitext editor, and improving the visual diff tool.

Recent changes

 • The 2017 wikitext editor is available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices. It has the same toolbar as the visual editor and can use the citoid service and other modern tools. The team have been comparing the performance of different editing environments. They have studied how long it takes to open the page and start typing. The study uses data for more than one million edits during December and January. Some changes have been made to improve the speed of the 2017 wikitext editor and the visual editor. Recently, the 2017 wikitext editor opened fastest for most edits, and the 2010 WikiEditor was fastest for some edits. More information will be posted at mw:Contributors/Projects/Editing performance.
 • The visual diff tool was developed for the visual editor. It is now available to all users of the visual editor and the 2017 wikitext editor. When you review your changes, you can toggle between wikitext and visual diffs. You can also enable the new Beta Feature for "Visual diffs". The Beta Feature lets you use the visual diff tool to view other people's edits on page histories and Special:RecentChanges. [15]
 • Wikitext syntax highlighting is available as a Beta Feature for both the 2017 wikitext editor and the 2010 wikitext editor. [16]
 • The citoid service automatically translates URLs, DOIs, ISBNs, and PubMed id numbers into wikitext citation templates. This tool has been used at the English Wikipedia for a long time. It is very popular and useful to editors, although it can be tricky for admins to set up. Other wikis can have this service, too. Please read the instructions. You can ask the team to help you enable citoid at your wiki.

Let's work together

 • The team is planning a presentation about editing tools for an upcoming Wikimedia Foundation metrics and activities meeting.
 • Wikibooks, Wikiversity, and other communities may have the visual editor made available by default to contributors. If your community wants this, then please contact Dan Garry.
 • The <references /> block can automatically display long lists of references in columns on wide screens. This makes footnotes easier to read. This has already been enabled at the English Wikipedia. If you want columns for a long list of footnotes on this wiki, you can use either <references /> or the plain (no parameters) reflist template. If you edit a different wiki, you can request multi-column support for your wiki. [17]
 • If you aren't reading this in your preferred language, then please help us with translations! Subscribe to the Translators mailing list or contact us directly. We will notify you when the next issue is ready for translation. Thank you!

Autopatrolled granted

Hi Jarble, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the "autopatrolled" permission to your account, as you have created numerous, valid articles. This feature will have no effect on your editing, and is simply intended to reduce the workload on new page patrollers. For more information on the autopatrolled right, see Wikipedia:Autopatrolled. Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! Schwede66 22:31, 4 March 2018 (UTC)

You might find this useful

Dear Jarble,

I've designed a user script to modify search results for users like you.

It includes toggles (menu items) for hiding/showing the details, and hiding/showing sister project results, and hiding/showing those annoying redirecteds & category-based results.

By turning those 3 features off, you get more focused search results one-per-line in a single-spaced list.

It also has a menu item to turn sorting of the list on/off. That's right, you can have alphabetically sorted search results.

And last but not least, there's a menu item to turn wikification on/off. That is, it can add * [[]] list item formatting to the results for easy copying/pasting into an edit window.

Besides the menu items mentioned above, the script also includes a workaround for WP search's intitle bug. So, if you use intitle:"search string" in your search, this script will strip out all results that do not have that search string in the title.

If none of this makes any sense, just install the script and a few minutes of tinkering with it will make things crystal clear.

But first...

So, with this script, you could get search results that look like this right on the screen:

* Automotive industry in Australia
* Automotive industry in Bangladesh
* Automotive industry in Belarus
* Automotive industry in Brazil
* Automotive industry in Bulgaria

Your eyes do not deceive you. Those are live links surrounded by list item wikiformatting codes.

Such lists are highly useful when copied to a sandbox and then accessed with AWB's make list feature. You can use AWB's preprocessing feature to strip out the pages that don't have a history section. Then you change the links to "History of the automotive industry in", using WikEd and its search/replace feature. And then you use AWB to create those redirect pages.

Have fun.     — The Transhumanist    11:02, 5 March 2018 (UTC)

Redirection

Hi, it appears that you tried to create a redirect at Spanish loanwords in Tagalog, but didn't do it correctly. I've fixed it now. For future reference, the correct redirect syntax is:

#REDIRECT target page name

Good luck. — Smjg (talk) 12:11, 6 March 2018 (UTC)

@Smjg: Thanks for correcting the typo. Are there any Wikipedia bots that could fix similar errors automatically? Jarble (talk) 19:21, 6 March 2018 (UTC)

Beneficial

Well that is a really weird redirect. It was originally to the Beneficial Bank, apparently taken over by HSBC; but "Beneficial" is just an adjective, and it could point to Beneficial ownership, - weed, -organism, -Corporation, -insects, -interest, -use, etc etc. I can't see any reason why, unqualified as it is, it should particularly point to insects. Chiswick Chap (talk) 07:46, 10 March 2018 (UTC)

@Chiswick Chap: Maybe it should redirect to Benefit instead. Jarble (talk) 07:52, 10 March 2018 (UTC)
Maybe, and it should surely be cross-referenced there, but that doesn't list any of the articles that begin with "Beneficial ..." such as those I mentioned above. Looks to me as if it should have its own DAB page. Chiswick Chap (talk) 08:59, 10 March 2018 (UTC)

My essay

I noticed you thanked me in 2015 for writing User:Ekips39/Admin abuse. I'm glad you liked it (assuming that's what you meant). It's a bit biased, though, and I've been meaning to rewrite it for some time. ekips39 (talk) 00:13, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Violence against women in Ukraine is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Violence against women in Ukraine until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:List of Muslims

A tag has been placed on Category:List of Muslims requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.

You apparently created this intentionally as a redirect to Category:Lists of Muslims, but I can't see a reason for it. – Fayenatic London 13:35, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

Apparently it was a redirect from a broken link, but this redirect page seems obsolete now. Jarble (talk) 14:52, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

Proposal to split Economic_inequality

Hello, I would like to split Economic inequality. According to this link the article is 202 kB and WP:SIZESPLIT suggests an article be split after 40 kB. Also, on the top of the page is a banner that is two years old suggesting the article should be split.

Since I am new, I would like to build a consensus first, rather than WP:BRD. To that end, I put a post on Talk:Economic_inequality and am contacting everyone who has edited the page in the past month.

Thanks for your time and please come down to discuss! Seahawk01 (talk) 01:25, 25 October 2018 (UTC)

Depth of Field

Hey, newbie question. I saw this edit [19] on depth of field and I was a bit confused - it seems to be about measuring sharpness rather than using depth of field directly - I wondered if you could give me a bit of a pointer as why you put in there rather than, say, focus? Joe (talk) 20:12, 10 February 2019 (UTC)

@Joereddington: I cited this article, which describes a method for generating depth maps by focusing and defocusing multiple images. This method is similar to focus stacking, which is also described in the depth of field article. Jarble (talk) 20:37, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
The Focus (optics) article is still only a stub. It describes the focal point of a lens, but it doesn't describe defocus aberration or sharpness of images. Jarble (talk) 20:40, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
I can see your point - particularly given the similarity of methods - but the *purpose* of focus stacking is (ish) to increase DoF - whereas the purpose of that method isn't related to DoF - does that make sense? Joe (talk) 19:09, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
In any case - it turned out to be the only bit of that section with any decent sources at all - so I've moved it to be with the focus stacking section anyway - solving all our problems :D Joe (talk) 20:02, 13 February 2019 (UTC)

Totally mystified

Most subjects that attempt global coverage are too big and in most cases hard to read and hard to edit - I would have thought that List of Old Growth Forests in Australia is a well kept separate item from the larger - it would be appreciated if you could offer some reason why itshould be inserted in a global item, thanks. JarrahTree 04:04, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

@JarrahTree: I created this redirect page (List of old-growth forests in Australia) since it was linked from another article (Forests of Australia.) Jarble (talk) 04:30, 4 March 2019 (UTC)
sincerest apologies - probably me mis-reading diffs again (yet again) - ignore me please - either way the material needs work on it - very under-developed - and the items added for the old growth forests list has a redundant column on the left (australia?), and quite a few red links to the actual forest names per se - hohum JarrahTree 04:46, 4 March 2019 (UTC)
