Hi Invertzoo. I hope you had a good New Year and your recent presentation on gastropods went well. Needless to say I am still here. I had to take a month off to write a paper in Astrophysics so the nudibranchs had to take a back seat for a while. Just a quick question

Wikipedia NY

Hi Susan. We met at the NY Wiki meeting a few weeks ago (we sat together). I just registered today (a newbie) and am looking to begin developing stories. Looked at many guidance documents these past few days. Played a bit in the sandbox. It's all just brilliant. However, would like to know if any tutorials (perhaps DVD) exist to make learning more efficient. There's so much here. Any advice would be most appreciated. Hello Invertzoo, yes I am a gastropod fancier, i am a researcher in Australia where I work on plant phylogeny but also inverts such as Volutidae. Project Member Edits

Hi Invertzoo. As you noticed I started editing/making some articles again yesterday and will be gradually doing some more in the next few weeks. (I began by making stubs for all the remaining Glossodoris species not yet completed. I know you are of the opinion that just making stubs is not our priority, I shall be doing other things too). I noticed that you found that I had created the article Loy (gastropod) and made some improvements which is great. My question is how do you keep track of all the new additions that members make so fast? Where are you looking for this information? I think I am missing something. Thanks for your speedy reply Invertzoo. Great to know about the stubs. It is actually my intention to gradually add to the ones I create in time anyway so they shouldn't stay as stubs forever. If I have a picture or one is available I write more detailed articles rather than stubs. Without a picture stubs are fine, but of limited use in my opinion. Still better to have them than not if they are properly sourced and the taxonomy is correct. I am going to Bali for 2 weeks in April to dive so I will bring back with me a load more nudibranch photos if I can. Incidentally, I have found some nudibranch articles and lists (some created by Graham Bould) in which I can't actually find a record of in any modern literature. (Nothing on nudipixel, the seaslug forum or my books). So I am not sure what to do about them. I am in the process of adding genus articles for all nudibranchs, which basically requires creating a lot of the family pages as well when they are not there. I am not a taxonomist though so no doubt when I stray from what I know I will make some taxonomic mistakes. If you see an article I create it might be a good idea to check it and make sure that I have got that part correct.

Although wikipedia is a collaborative effort and is democratized, you are basically the senior editor for this project as far as I am concerned through sheer effort and experience so I look to you for leadership, hence my questions. Thanks for answering so throughly.

I had come across the AlexNewArtBot search feature, but as you say it is a couple of days behind and I only created the Loy (gastropod) article yesterday so I wondered if there was some other way that you were keeping track of article creations. Perhaps you just stumbled across Loy by chance since it isn't reflected in the search results yet?

P.S. I understand what you mean about unreferenced species. When I went through the genus lists for Chromodoris and Glossodoris the first time I found many named species which either no longer exist or are synonyms and were sourced from inaccurate online lists that are well outofdate. It wasn't an easy task to go through and work out which ones were valid. Because this is a developing field there isn't a definitive reference yet that I can find online. The most upto date I have found is Bill Rudman's page which is excellent but it is never wise to rely just on one source... Antarctic-adventurer (talk) 15:49, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

Your answers were very helpful. Yes I am aware how to see a member's contributions, but it is not something that I do unless I have a reason. The AlexNewArtBot will prove very useful. If you ever want to see what pages I have created for the gastropod project head over to my user page. I have listed everything I have done on there. Oh and thanks for showing me to the "Taxonomy of the Gastropoda" list. That would prove to be very useful as I work my way through the nudibranchs. James M. Tien

Hi. I could use your advice about copyright violations. I removed copy/paste info from this article. The editor claims to be, and probably is, the author. He also uploaded an image of the subject. Actually, this specific case has sorted itself out. I know with photos taken from a copyrighted site, some sort of email is required, but what is the policy with text? For copyright questions of any kind I always ask User:Moonriddengirl, who is part of WikiProject Copyright Cleanup. I only know a little about copyright, so please check with her or someone else in from that project. As you know, it is absolutely not recommended that people write biography articles about themselves or their best friends, and this article is a good example of why that is not recommended! The article has numerous problematic issues, the question of notability being the most basic of them! However, if the copyright for the text and the photo are indeed owned by the user rather than the University of Miami, and if he has actually released these things correctly (using the proper process) to WP and WM, then as far as I understand it, it is not a copyright violation to have them in the article. That is a lot of "ifs". Bearing in mind there are other multiple significant issues with this article, and that it may need to be deleted as unnotable, what I do in these cases is ask an administrator right away. I usually ask JoJan. Just now I put the notability tag on the article. That tag should attract more experienced editors to come take a look at it. Reliable sources are the name of the game with BLPs, and many of the references you cite might not qualify. I don't read Danish, so I don't know how reliable the Danish sources are. There are all kinds of "Who's Who", and you would need establish that the Danish one is acceptable as a reliable source. Also, I don't know what guidelines apply for designer BLPs, so I don't know whether blogs attached to designer magazines qualify as reliable sources.

I wonder whether the awards credited to him are really notable. To look at just three of them:

• First Place, International Photography Awards sounds impressive at face value. But each year they award first places in over sixty categories. So unless he won the overall award, it doesn't sound that impressive. Also, his name doesn't seem to appear in any of the award lists.
• American Institute of Graphic Arts award sound good too. But if you look at the Wikipedia article, it says they make awards every year for the 50 best designed books and jackets. So, unless there is something special about the particular award he got, the notability is dubious.
• New York Art Directors Club award - I don't know what this is, but he doesn't seem to appear on their hall of fame, nor does he show up in their archives.

It may be he is just a member of these associations, rather than the recipient of notable awards. You might find a useful source somewhere in Google books, though most of these just cite him for a cover design. Google news archives have several Danish news reports. Maybe one of those is reliable. But you would expect a notable New York designer to have at least one or two articles about him in New York newspapers of magazines. Authority dates

You noted the strange: "Conus aculeiformis Reeve, 1844 in 1843-65". There are many that appear similar, for instance: "Conus canonicus Hwass in Bruguière, 1792 in 1789-1816". Is this wrong? If so, let me know and I will zap them. Thanks. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 06:23, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

Well, that extra info is not exactly "wrong"; what it is is the publication dates of all of the volumes in the series, the whole book series that the particular volume (in which the species was described) formed part of. It is however very unusual to mention it like that, the name is usually written simply as "Conus canonicus Hwass in Bruguière, 1792" or "Conus aculeiformis Reeve, 1844". However it might perhaps be worth having that info in the article itself, I don't really know. You could ask Snek and JoJan what they think. Invertzoo (talk) 13:44, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

Yes I think that is a very good idea, not only for you, but for anyone else too. Maybe once it is done it could be posted on the project page. It could also be updated over time as new good website sources appear. I think we should go ahead and do this, Snek and JoJan and I can work on it. Why don't we put it together at first on a subpage?
