Gilette VfD

Hi there! I'm sorry, but you can't just retract a VfD (even if you were the one to suggest it in the first place) because several proposals for a procedure for that failed to achieve consensus. However, wait four or five days and the problem is solved :) In the future, you may want to consider that merging two articles does not require a VfD vote - simply be bold. Colour section

The color selection guide is a great idea. Perhaps you should add that one can consider using patterns instead of colors to make graphical distinctions: dotted and dashed lines can be more distinct than colors on graphs; cross-hatching and other shading patterns can work for solids. This would have the advantage that it would be color-independent: important not only for the color blind but also if printing an article using black and white equipment. Consonant bot

If you really want to write a bot to do it, please feel free to go ahead. However, I think the amount of work it will take to write and debug it won't be amortized over the relatively small number of pages that need adjustment.

I figure writing a bot to find and extract the tables and replace with the appropriate template would take at least 4-5 hours, assuming you already have a working framework for interacting with the Wikipedia servers, then another couple hours to make sure it works correctly. By then, I think, they could all be fixed by hand. But, it you really want to do it with a bot, if only for the experience and satisfaction of creating one to do it, I encourage you to do so.

I already converted all the vowels a week ago by hand and it only took me a couple hours. Your time might be more efficiently spent trying to recruit a few people to help and setting up a page as part of Wikipedia:WikiProject Phonetics to track progress. Maybe post a request on each member's user talk page asking them to convert a couple. These are just my suggestions—you, of course, can do whatever you like. Let me know what you decide. I noticed you went through a lot of the articles on individual sounds, convering the infoboxes into templates. The links to the sound files doesn't seem to have made it through, though. As far as I know, I don't think the audio template can be used inside another template, though I'm not sure. You might want to have a look at some of the articles you've converted. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. 15 of the 50 articles I templatified last night were found to be missing sound links. On further examination, one page (velarized alveolar lateral approximant) didn't have a sound sample to start with, and the other 14 pages you'd replaced the pronounciation sample on, where you'd linked to the sound with the Audio template. (The other 34 successfully-converted pages used direct Media: or Image: links.) My script didn't take this into account, and didn't scrape the sound file links.

Incidentally, templates nest fine - check out User:IceKarma/Modular template draft 2.

However, converting the consonant articles to use the Infobox IPA template revealed a problem, which I've written up here. IceKarmaॐ 19:04, 2005 Apr 27 (UTC)

Colour vision in carnivores

What is the reference for your addition to the dichromat page asserting that carnivores tend to be anomalous trichromats, please? I have been unable to confirm this from the abstracting services, and Jacobs reports both ferrets and hyenas as dichromats. seglea 10:51, 12 May 2005 (UTC)

Check the history: it's not my assertion, I just edited it. The original said 'weaker trichromats'; cats at least are trichromats, but I wasn't feeling bold enough then to reword it to just refer to cats, so I have now. IceKarmaॐ 12:18, 2005 May 12 (UTC)

Sorry, I was following the summary statements and thought you'd added it. A more careful look shows that it was added by an anonymous user, who can't have been very knowledgeable given the way s/he talks about colour anomaly. I can't find any evidence to support it at all, so I have cut it out; Yokoyama & Radlwimmer (The molecular genetics of red and green color vision in mammals, GENETICS 153 (2): 919-932 OCT 1999) and other sources refer only to a single medium/long wavelength cone system in cats as in other nonprimate mammals. The most likely source for the claim is that there is some trichromacy due to rod action at crepuscular light levels, so I have left that in as a possibility, though I can't find a source for that either. seglea 22:14, 12 May 2005 (UTC)

I'm not having a lot of luck finding references, but this seems to be saying that cats are already known to have L and S cones plus rods, but that their results seem to indicate an M-cone system under certain situations. This, while not a scholarly article, is from the website of a veterinary ophthalmologist, and posits three cones, peaking at 450, 500, 555 nm. Still looking. IceKarmaॐ 05:56, 2005 May 13 (UTC)

Hey, hey! Swedish language is very close to being ready for FAC. There's just a few stray details to straighten out and one or two notes to add. Think you could make those last finishing touches to the map? You know, highlighting the Swedish-speaking areas of Finland. Do you think you could make those diphtong charts for Swedish phonology as well? It'd make it a very nice supporting article.

Death penalty map

Hi, I find your colouring of that world map helpful. According to my informations (Amnesty International.org), however, Russia has abolished the death penalty in peacetimes since 1997. It should be marked in Green, then, not Orange. We need the change for the German article soon cause it´s on the list for excellency, only few day left. Sorry, but I find new information see this page Here you will see that the death penalty is abolished from the 2002 and not from 1992 or another year, and chile sign the traty of San José de Costa Rica. This traty it doesn't authorize to Chile to create a law that restitutes death penalty

Congratulations on being made an admin! I thought you might like to know of a javascript tool that may help in your editing by giving easy access to many admin features. I should explain myself as well. The thing is, we've had problems over at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Chinese cities with User:Sarcelles, who deluges us with poorly written stubs and non-notables mostly to promote his own POV. User:Abstrakt and others have devoted a huge amount of time simply chasing down and rewriting his stuff or putting them up for VFD. His latest series of "Public Security Bureaus" is simply the latest development in a long history of poor quality, POV-driven writing. Previous VFD's have already deleted 4 of them: Changchun Public Security Bureau, Tangshan Public Security Bureau, Shijiazhuang Public Security Bureau, Lu'an Public Security Bureau. Unfortunately, most of us weren't aware of this latest one until too late (about half an hour ago). But with 4 precedents already set, it doesn't make too much sense to keep this one. -- ran (talk) 04:57, 26 September 2005 (UTC)

I have made a small post-archival modification to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/CANALBOTAFOGO because it used to look like I voted "don't delete", which I didn't. Vowel table-charts

I've come across a problem that I can't really solve. It's fairly hard to get a hold of proper vowel charts like the ones you helped prepare for most languages. We could really need some sort of standard table that looks similar to a regular gif-chart, but which is still done mainly with CSS. Something similar to the vowel-template that Denelson made, but which you could customize and use for differently languages. Do you think this is doable?

RE: Flag of Denmark image

Hi! I hope you're well. I support the update and use of SVG images when possible, especially for flags, but I reverted your change(s) to the Flag of Denmark page because the SVG you created has a transparent cross, not a white one (I believe) (this should probably occur for all other pages too, until corrected). This becomes a crucial difference for monitors with varying (background) colour usage, where such transparency (of that) appears light blue or something different in colour. Particularly, novices willl rightly assume that the flag has an incorrectly rendered cross or (worse) may not know better.

If possible, please create appropriate SVGs with white included. Either that, or I'm smoking something. ;) Thoughts? Get back to me when able, and take care! E Pluribus Anthony 01:49, 8 October 2005 (UTC)

Hi! I notice you reverted my change to Image:Flag_of_Denmark.svg without any comment. Did I change something else than the colour? Your version of the flag has uses an incorrect red. Danish dialects

I need another dialect map, this time of Danish. Statsbilioteket has a homepage with dialect samples, unfortunately not as good as SweDia, but still better than nothing. This is going to be a cakewalk, too, because there are already good maps o' Denmark available. This one, for example. The modus operandi would be the same as for the Swedish map, with numbers centered on the place where the dialect was recorded. If you look at Danish language#Dialects you'll see the main dialect groups and the best way of ordering the numbers. I'm suggesting that you start from the west with the dialects of Jutland, then move on to the other island dialects and finish off with Bornholm. The samples at the Danish homepage are numbered and I've selected to remove a few that are too densely placed or similar enough to be excluded: 2, 5, 13, 15, 19, 22 and 23. That makes for a total of 17 samples.

Lemme know you if you're up for it or if I've been unclear about something. I'll be checking your talkpage, so just reply here. And if you happen to know any other online dialect archive, lemme know. I'd really prefer one that wasn't stored in crappy-ass RealAudio format...
