Question Re: "Blue Bite" edit

Hi, Herby. I was just wondering how come my post "Blue Bite" was removed? I thought I followed the Wikipedia standards but would really appreciate your feedback and help making this post stay on Wikipedia. I feel that what Blue Bite is doing in the Proximity Marketing space is extremely valuable and should be known to the general public. I understand that the article was cited as being blatant advertising, however, when I look at similar companies (for example: Lamar Advertising Company) I find my post to be very similar in nature. Please advise how I can make my content of value and better. I really appreciate all of your help.

Brewer123 (talk) 16:41, 14 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

It is promotional. It looks like some users are colluding over this entry (it can easily be checked & if so the users would be blocked), unsuprising I guess as a "marketing" company --Herby talk thyme 16:44, 14 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Specifically & for my reference it looks like Special:Contributions/BlueBiteLLC, Special:Contributions/Brewer123, Special:Contributions/NewYorkJets80, Special:Contributions/UPennLA9 & Special:Contributions/Ctsv may well be connected. --Herby talk thyme 16:48, 14 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Can you please check to see if users are colluding? - Because I do not think this is a fare accusation. Can you please provide me with advise on how to get "Blue Bite" into Wikipedia instead of making accusations? Is there someone I can speak to at Wikipedia? I just do not believe this is fare. Brewer123 (talk) 16:54, 14 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
The page has been deleted by three different admins now. The talk page was solely links promoting the company. That is not the way an encyclopedia works. If you want to contribute positively to Wikipedia - great. However it would be best if you actually took a look around at what happens before trying to get an article that is promotional about a marketing organisation into it. --Herby talk thyme 17:01, 14 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Question Re: "Seal" edit

Hello Herby. We are aware that you have deleted our Article relating to Seal as unambiguous advertising. We respect your decision in doing this but would like to ask how other companies similar to ours have retained their entries and have not been deleted. We just presented facts about our company without making any extravagant claims. I would appreciate some clarification from you if possible. Many thanks Seal --SealWiki (talk) 16:17, 16 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

That other articles exist is not an valid argument I'm afraid. There may be ones that have not been reviewed or where the company basis is different.
Of concern to me is the use of the plural in your statement. The suggestion that you are in some way associated with the company would be a considerable issue. Please take a look at our conflict of interest policy. It seems possible that you would not be able to create the article anyway. --Herby talk thyme 16:41, 16 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Herby. You recently deleted my article on Precision Practice Management and I was wondering if there was anyway to change it to get it back online. I wrote on its talk page why I thought the company was relevant. Thanks! Tjohara9 (talk) 17:00, 28 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes I accept the fact that the company may become important in a year or two but you offered no evidence to support the fact that it is currently notable. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 17:09, 28 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
I read the Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies) article, and believe the company may still qualify. It mentioned Hewlett-Packard satisfies it by being featured in Palo Alto Weekly. Similarly, Precision was one of two featured companies in this St. Louis Business Journal article, and featured solely in this Smart Business article. Is this sufficient evidence for being currently notable? Thanks Tjohara9 (talk) 15:07, 29 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
I still have some doubts but you are free to work on the page giving references to support your view - "local" business journals would not be the best proof of notability for me. Regards --Herby talk thyme 16:03, 29 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Question Re: "Diamond Resorts" edit

Why was the Diamond Resorts page deleted, rather than edited? I've seen similar pages that aren't flagged but seem to violate wikipedia rules. For example, Wyndham Vacation Resorts has no sources, specific lists of resorts, marketing/advertising of membership programs. Thanks for your patience with a new wikipedia user. Glbltraveller (talk) 21:20, 31 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

It was tagged by another user as being promotional, I agreed with that & deleted it. The fact that other pages exist is not a valid argument I'm afraid. I am sure any issues will get dealt with.
I would also suggest that you are careful with your editing. The new page you created looks as though it might be tagged for deletion - there is very little content there. The creation of promotional pages is not something required in an encyclopaedia. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 08:43, 1 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Link deletion query edit

I recently noticed that you deleted a few links of mine to articles on ISO and ANSI paper sizes, as well as a comparison of Labelflash and LightScribe technologies. Please state your reasons. I'm at a complete loss. For example, the comparison of Labelflash and LightScribe technologies is one of the only recent comparisons of two popular products. There is information there that won't be found in other comparisons conducted closer to the release of the products. The paper size article has some tips that you also won't find anywhere else, as well as good diagrams comparing ISO and ANSI sizes. Sure, these articles are on a company's website, but they are excellent articles and in no way promote any product. There are plenty of decent, neutral articles there, and I do not see why they aren't "Wikipedia material". Your turn. And please, in the future, bring issues like this up on the discussion page. I noticed that you didn't delete other links that I put up (to tomshardware, for example, another company). Does not add up to me. User:MacMan77

Fairly straightforward. Your only contributions to Wikipedia have been to add these links. That suggests to me that you may be seeking to publicise this website. Please take a good look at WP:EN. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 13:03, 12 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
You only deleted links to BeLight Software and somehow overlooked Tom's Hardware, another commercial site. Also, many of the existing links are links to commercial websites that also, like BeLight Software, have some helpful articles on the sites (http://www.printindustry.com and http://www.inkjetart.com). The links that I provided weren't at all promotional, and the information there is useful. You won't find a comparison and explanation of LightScribe and Labelflash from the past two or so years. The article on paper size provided plenty of good diagrams that help people visually understand the Therefore I have reverted the edits that removed the links. If you wish to remove them, I request that we take this to the discussion page of each article and let the overall community decide. Thanks. MacMan77 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 12:58, 14 December 2009 (UTC).Reply
WP:OTHERLINKS,The nature of Wikipedia means that you can't make a convincing argument based on whether other links in articles do or don't exist; that is because anyone can add any link to any article. Plenty of links exist that probably should not, and many links do not exist that probably should. So pointing out that some other link exists is not relevant to whether the link in question should also exist.--Hu12 (talk) 15:42, 14 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Herby,

The only reason why I changed it was because the new image shows clearly more of the village then the old one did...I have noticed that the "new" image had been used previously. Given the size of the image, not sure if it really makes that much difference whether it is a "quality image" or not. However if you disagree, I have no problems, simply revert it back, no worries. You are now a Reviewer edit

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. MBisanz talk 02:11, 20 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello, I've just read your page on Meta and liked it especially the part about the pigeon and the statue (Is it yours or someone else's quote?). I hope you're doing fine and I sincerely apologize for this intrusion. My name is Claudi Balaguer (User Capsot from the Catalan Wikipedia and the Occitan Wikiccionari). I've just read your profile and I felt that our cause might find a friendly ear! I really hope I am not bothering you and you will help us... I'm a member of a Catalan association "Amical de la Viquipèdia" which is trying to get some recognition as a Chapter (some kind of intermediate structure between the Wikipedias and the Wikimedia Foundation) but this hasn't been accepted up to this moment because Catalan has not a/one state. We would appreciate your support, visible if you stick this on your first page: Wikimedia CAT and/or sign the Members and Supporters list following the link on the template (you can have more information on my userpage). RFA edit

Hi, Herby. I am looking for a longstanding administrator to do a thorough review of my account, for a third RFA attempt. Think you could offer some time?

My previous RFAs were in January and July 2010, both failing due to "insufficient experience in all admin areas", no issues on "trust with the tools" as far as I know. A combined view of my older RFA's could be found here. I've also had discussions with other users and admins (older discussions here); so far no "oppose" yet.

Between my last RFA and now, I have considerably changed my editing patterns and areas. I have (as you know) also been nominated and passed as an administrator at Commons. In real life, I occasionally get quite some free time (other than work/study periods), thus I really could offer a helping hand to the community... Rehman 13:14, 12 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Technical question edit

Hello Herbythyme, I have a question that you might or might not know the answer, but here it is. I wonder how open proxy thing works. Let's say a company is using this open proxy thing with IP xx.xxx.xx.xx. I know that the location of this IP could change at any time (It used to be in Pennsylvania in December, it was in Chicago last night), but maybe you know, if IP itself could change too. In other words, if somebody with this IP edited Wikipedia in October, and then hacked my email accounts in December, could I say that the persons, who did it work for the same company? Although what I described to you here is a real case scenario, it does not concern any user on Commons. May I please ask you to treat this as a technical question about open proxies and nothing more. Thanks.--Mbz1 (talk) 17:33, 15 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

It would depend if the IP was dynamic, static, and who had access to it. I can explain in greater detail if you like. By the way, why is everyone deleting the link to the site I put in the Niche marketing article without discussing anything on the talk page?180.191.145.67 (talk)

Image Removal edit

You removed images that are relevent to the article showing examples of the different types of awnings. There was no link to a website, only a link to the image file which seems to be within the guidelines. Yet there are other images that are examples of wind loads and design which link to a file and business website who does not own the images they added to the article.

I quote from your Wikimedia page "People using Foundation wikis to promote themselves or other websites is something I feel quite strongly about." However, you have a link to your blog where people can purchase images. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Canvasgirl (talkcontribs) 04:27, 27 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

I am a newbie, but have something to contribute to pages that are in my field of expertise. I have been in the business for 25 years and think I could contribute information to certain articles. I understand the links to my site being removed, but would like to contribute images where appropriate. Please bear with me as I learn. --Canvasgirl (talk) 15:05, 27 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

I understand, my concern is that other sites (only competitors sites) will claim the work as their own as they have done before.

"Attribution is often considered the most basic of requirements made by a license, as it allows an author to accumulate a positive reputation that partially repays their work and prevents others from claiming fraudulently to have produced the work. It is widely regarded as a sign of decency and respect to acknowledge the creator by giving him/her credit for the work."

My thoughts were that I would allow blogs and information sites to use it, but I can't figure how to add an attibution that attributes the work in the photo, not the photo itself as I am not a photographer. If I attribute the work as designing and creating it, under my company name to deter competitors sites from using it,then's it's advertising. Some people in my field consider themselves as an "artist" when creating products, not just a manufacturer and salesmen of products, as most of my work is custom made. Maybe I should be more selective on the images I upload to the Commons.--71.255.186.59 (talk) 16:51, 27 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Abuse Filter on the Article Feedback Tool edit

Hey there :). You're being contacted because you're an edit filter manager, At the moment, we're developing Version 5 of the Article Feedback Tool, which you may or may not have heard about. If you haven't; for the first time, this will involve a free-text box where readers can submit comments :). Obviously, there's going to be junk, and we want to minimise that junk. To do so, we're working the Abuse Filter into the tool.

For this to work, we need people to write and maintain filters. I'd be very grateful if you could take a look at the discussion here and the attached docs, and comment and contribute! Thanks :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 18:17, 17 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
