Additions to Women in Red

Thanks, Harej, for your additions. Just one small point: in line with Wikipedia conventions, the item on external links should be headed "External links" (not "External Links"). I cannot edit it without causing problems.--Ipigott (talk) 10:29, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

Another problem: I can't get our new navbox (e.g. at the foot of the main page) to link correctly to Press. It hits the right section for a couple of seconds and then goes to the project.--Ipigott (talk) 11:07, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

Women in Red

WP:Women in Red is using Love Heart KammaRahbek.SVG as our logo. Can your team alter it to make it unique for WiR, e.g. perhaps change the color to red? Also, I like the simple logo used by Wikipedia:Medicine and that it includes the Wikipedia globe; can we add the Wikipedia globe into the WiR logo? I've created a Women in Red Commons cat[1] and placed this svg into it, but this should be temporary and we should have a unique logo in 2016. Thx. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:26, 13 December 2015 (UTC)

Naming convention

We have discussed the navigation difficulties with (a) Wikipedia:WikiProject Women/Women in Red. In hindsight, we should have left WiR at (b) Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red. We also talked about (c) Wikipedia:Women in Red; short and sweet, and makes me thing of Wikipedia:WikiWomen's History Month. From 60,000', and looking to the future (as the goal is to translate this brand into other language Wikipedias), what would be a best practice? What direction are forward-thinking en-wiki projects going with their naming conventions? If I edited on the es-wiki or de-wiki, and I wanted to replicate WiR, which of these en-wiki names would make the most sense? --Rosiestep (talk) 14:58, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

Rosiestep, all three are valid names. I personally prefer plain "Women in Red" but it is not more or less "correct" than the other two. For the other languages, the best name will depend on what the conventions are for naming WikiProjects (or WikiProject-like things) on those language editions; each edition tends to do things slightly differently. (In French, for example, WikiProjects are called "portals," similar to our own portals but they also function as WikiProjects!) Harej (talk) 18:00, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

In addition to the party, the event will be a participatory unconference, with plenary panels, lightning talks, and of course open space sessions.

Hello there! Happy to be writing this newsletter once more. This month:

What comes next

Some good news: the Wikimedia Foundation has renewed WikiProject X. This means we can continue focusing on making WikiProjects better.

During our first round of work, we created a prototype WikiProject based on two ideas: (1) WikiProjects should clearly present things for people to do, and (2) The content of WikiProjects should be automated as much as possible. We launched pilots, and for the most part it works. But this approach will not work for the long term. While it makes certain aspects of running a WikiProject easier, it makes the maintenance aspects harder.

We are working on a major overhaul that will address these issues. New features will include:

  • Creating WikiProjects by simply filling out a form, choosing which reports you want to generate for your project. This will work with existing bots in addition to the Reports Bot reports. (Of course, you can also have sections curated by humans.)
  • One-click button to join a WikiProject, with optional notifications.
  • Be able to define your WikiProject's scope within the WikiProject itself by listing relevant pages and categories, eliminating the need to tag every talk page with a banner. (You will still be allowed to do that, of course. It just won't be required.)

The end goal is a collaboration tool that can be used by WikiProjects but also by any edit-a-thon or group of people that want to coordinate on improving articles. Though implemented as an extension, the underlying content will be wikitext, meaning that you can continue to use categories, templates, and other features as you normally would.

This will take a lot of work, and we are just getting started. What would you like to see? I invite you to discuss on our talk page.

I have a book that I think would be of some issue to the project, but I owned way too many books, a veritable private library if you will (my landlord hates me for that) and I can't seem to find it. I believe that this project is a great effort on the part of all, and I am must pleased to join in. I am something of a hopeless Anglophile, but it is nice to write something other war for a change. Rosiestep, sorry if you had pinged me earlier and I somehow didn't get it. I will get back to you on this soon. Thankfully this rename should go more smoothly since (a) I removed a lot of hardcoded references to the WikiProject name and (b) we know everything that needs to get done. Megalibrarygirl, not as far as I know. Aside from the lack of technical functionality on Wikipedia to do so, I don't think Wikipedians would appreciate a copyrighted RSS stream on-wiki. Harej (talk) 02:27, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
