yes, i can assure you that was clear - to me at least! As to remaining polite - my model / reminder was Tony1, who was even more polite than I managed to be. He made a good point - that for some people (perhaps living in countries without Indigenous populations or major ethnic minorities for example?), the idea of "self-identification" may be an unfamiliar one. I actually think that is only partly relevant. But many readers (as distinct from active editors) might also be unfamiliar with key policies and guidelines such as WP:V and WP:RS, and therefore also not understand that the language isn't just chosen by article editors, but is based upon the sources. You have seen the effort I have put in, and I suspect you can gauge how keen I am to see the process through. I notice you have struck as complete your comment commencing "Not sure what others think about the issue, but there is no reference for the following: 'The last public house in Little Thetford...'". However, I sense you are still unhappy. I have reviewed the offending paragraph, and I am prepared to strike the relevant minor details, if it will help. Please advise.

The Three Horseshoes, now a residential property, was one of seven public houses, known to be within the village boundaries since the mid-19th century. The British Beer and Pub Association estimated in 2001 that "six rural pubs close each week". There was a public house at Little Thetford, the Fish and Duck, situated along the river nearer Stretham; it closed sometime during 2006, and the owning company dissolved on 11 May 2010. There is a combined newsagent, post office, and grocery store in Stretham, 2 miles (3.2 km) south of the village. The one remaining local store is the recumbent bicycle shop, D.Tek, on the main street.

Hi, I've had a look at Wintjiya Napaltjarri, and I can't find much to complain about at all! I think it's well written, although as you know reviewers at FAC may find some holes in it! These are the few things I thought of:

• Why is she known as Wintjia Napaltjarri No. 1? Is there any explanation for that in the sources?

• Belatedly yes, i worked it out, and added it.

• Haasts Bluff could be linked in the lead

• Done.

• The first sentence of the "career" section is quite long, could possibly be split

• Section changed quite a bit now, including taking up your suggestion.

• "Dreamings" can be linked to add context

• Good idea, done.

• You have inconsistent use of numbers (words vs. figures): "Twenty-five women were involved ... included three canvases that were three metres square ... two that were 3 by 1.5 metres" In particular, the "three metres" and "3 by 1.5 metres" should probably be consistent.

I'm comfortable with that warning, and sorry if you took it as a threat. I'll make a few points. First, having been reverted by two different editors you didn't take it to the talk page. Second, it used language that expressed a clear point of view - it wasn't neutral. Third, Oakeshott was elected, and in Australia's political system, it is that election that sets in train his representational responsibilities, nothing else, including opinion polls. Fourth, as you may have heard Oakeshott say - or will be able to read, presuming one of the media outlets prepares a transcript - his electorate has consistently expressed independent electoral preferences at several different political levels, which is why trying to then run and interpret polls within a 'two party preferred' framework is so problematic. Finally, FWIW (and as I have indicated, i don't think its worth anything), polls in that particular seat were hardly overwhelming (compared, for example to Katter's seat) - and at least some of the polls were not based on random samples either - such as that referred to here. Re: copyright query

Hi, hamiltonstone. I am going to presume that you meant "work" to be an object of art (painting, sculpture, etc).

Generally, for unknown authorship, the US rule is 120 years since creation (if unpublished), or 95 years since first publishing (if published after 1989, or from 1923 to 1989 with proper filing of copyrights). http://www.copyright.cornell.edu/resources/publicdomain.cfm nicely presents these.

UK law is more complicated, but can be easily followed in this National Archives's leaflet. Note that UK law is quite strict on claims of anonymous authorship; one has to show that reasonable efforts (like contacting organisations who have published the photographs) have been made to ascertain the identity of the author.

Most other EU countries (Germany, France) appear to abide the 70 years since creation rule for anonymous works (see commons:Template:Anonymous-EU, although I suspect that this could be a simplification by Commons. Jappalang (talk) 14:48, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

Kurosawa

Let me be completely candid with you about the reasons why both your attitude and your actions regarding the Akira Kurosawa page leave, to put it mildly, much to be desired:

1. I nominated the page almost two weeks ago as a Featured Article candidate. I am about to go away on a very important business trip on which my job may well depend. I am exhausted and ILL (see below) and don't have the time to engage in edit wars on Wikipedia!

2. Before I nominated the article, I worked on it for 10 WEEKS day and night, spending literally hundreds of hours on it from mid-June to early September, with a collaborator who helped me write the Life and career section. If you want to know how incomparably better the article is now from what it was when I started working on it, go to "View history" to the edit of June 13th 2010 to see how poorly structured and incomplete it had been. The goal of Wikipedia is (or should be) to create articles demonstrating first-rate writing and research. The article now meets these goals and, I believe, sets a standard for Wiki articles. By the way, I have had the strong support on this project of the distinguished film scholar David Bordwell, from whose blog I borrowed several images which you, for some mysterious reason, left intact.

3. During the two weeks in which the article has been nominated, I have responded to EVERY SINGLE COMMENT AND OBJECTION where it has been shown to me that not changing the page would be in violation of Wikipedia's rules (whether I thought those rules were fair and sensible or not). The rule whereby the nominator must make a good faith effort to respond to comments and objections has been strictly followed by me.

4. You don't seem to notice (or care) that your comments (posted unfairly under the heading "oppose") contradict those of DCGeist, whose objections I have worked very strenuously to meet. For example, before the current "Tora" image existed, I had in its place a screenshot from the trailer of the film to which Mr. Geist objected as not adequately supporting the text. He suggested that I get a screenshot of the actual film itself to better illustrate my point. I went to the trouble of obtaining a DVD of the film and getting a screenshot which I think adequately addressed Mr. Geist's issues. Kurosawa, as the text says, did not direct Tora! Tora! Tora!. But I think the reader needs to know that the film would have been ideally suited to his strengths as an director of action films, so that his firing by the producers can be understood in its proper context. After going to all this trouble, you not only objected to the image without, apparently, bothering to read Mr. Geist's previous comments, you deleted it yourself without giving me the time to respond properly, as I indicated that I was going to do.

5. The strain on me of editing this article has been enormous. I have suffered sleep deprivation, chest pains, and even crying jags. With all this and a business trip coming up, I really can't afford further stress.

6. When I come back from my business trip and have had time to recover adequately, I would like to write an article for publication about my experience editing Wikipedia, and why it badly needs reform. I would like to interview you, to give you the opportunity that you have not give me to defend your position. Will you agree to this?

I will undo the image deletions you have made until you prove to me that they are DEFINITELY (not "may be") in violation of Wikipedia's rules. Dylanexpert (talk) 11:41, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

If editing Wikipedia has been this stressful for you, then a break would be an excellent idea I think. I suggest that you not undo those image deletions without establishing a consensus on the talk page first. I am almost certain they will not meet the non-free use criteria, I know Hammersoft agrees, and I expect other image experts on Wikipedia will too. Regarding your dialogue around Tora Tora Tora, I think DCGeist and I probably disagree on what would be defendable in terms of non-free content - which is exactly one of the reasons I posted my own views on that page rather than letting others speak for me - this is one of the ways in which Wikipedia works, with different editors putting in views and discussing them. I am sorry that the presence of the images on Commons misled you into thinking the images were safe to use. That is an ongoing issue at Commons because people upload all sorts of stuff that shouldn't really be there. It isn't your fault it was wrongly uploaded. I'd just encourage you to take a lead from various users like Hammersoft, who have a fair bit of experience with copyright etc, to provide some guidance on these things. Look, that's a good question. I treated the second word as a descriptor rather than part of a proper noun. Gray (1997) uses the capitalised form. The Northern Land Council's media release uses "Muckaty cattle station" and (as i do sometimes in the article) just "Muckaty". Nash uses just "Muckaty". However, articles in The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald, and online news site Crikey, as well as a NT Government media release, all capitalise both words.
