IP Address 62.171.198.4

You have recently threatened to block this IP address. This is a response to that.

This IP address is one used by schools throughout the UK. As a teacher I use it at work. This IP address (and others in the range) is regularly blocked for vandalism and warnings given. This seems to be totally pointless.

I realise that wikipedia has procedures, but there are exceptional circumstances where they clearly won't work and a new resolution needs to be found.

The IfL IP range is used by thousands of people throughout the UK, most of them schoolchildren, the rest school staff. Threatening to block this address will therefore have no effect whatsoever. An IP range that can be used anonymously by thousands of children and teenagers WILL cause vandalism if completely unblocked.

If the range were blocked then myself, other teachers and pupils with the right intentions will all be blocked from editing during the day, however, if unblocked it will cause vandalism. A difficult situation.

Is there any way that the entire IfL IP range could be blocked from ANONYMOUS editing only? This would mean that specific users could then be blocked, but those wishing to genuinely contribute still can.

Being relatively new to wikipedia myself, I don't know the best place to discuss this, perhaps you could point me in the correct direction?

I looked over the changes, they didn't seem to me to be obvious vandalism, although I may have missed it:

The Weebl's Cartoon edit made by 72.224.114.205(I have an account now) on 9/28/06 is infact legitimate. The edit[1] was made in regards to the cartoon "Aaaaaaahhhhhh", which can be found on Weebls-stuff.com. This link to the cartoon was also included in the edit which links to the Weebls-stuff.com website which is what the article is about.

It is clear how one can suppose something which contains such a phrase as "Aaaaaaaahhhhah" is vandalism. However, it is disappointing that no one checked the links nor attempted to alter the section before reverting the changes.

Your speedy of this guy was endorsed at DRV basically per Wikipedia:SNOW, but I'd like to mention that counting "speedy deletes" in an AfD and applying IAR if they are in the majority (as you claim did) is really a terrible thing to do. Newbies/some AfD regulars like to scream "speedy delete" at everything -- an admin should decide whether a CSD sticks based on the CSD, not based on AfD commenters telling him to. bad speedy deletion

Why did you delete this page instead of making it a redirect? The version you deleted was clearly a misguided attempt to create a redirect. It would have taken just as long to fix it as it would have to delete it. The fallout from this is that Vanderbilt University just sent out a press release about Muhammad Yunus winning the Nobel Peace Prize, except they misspelled it "Muhammed Yunus". Muhammed Yunus is the malformed redirect that you deleted instead of fixing. So all of the people who have been trying to pull up the article get a page saying that Wikipedia doesn't have an article on Muhammed Yunus. Perhaps you just didn't realize they were trying to create a redirect. Regardless, you may want to be more circumspect about speedy deletions in the future. Kaldari 19:52, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

Request for protection on Minotaur and Labyrinth

Hi, for some reason certain anon users keep editing Minotaur and Labyrinth to state that the Minotaur was half chicken, instead of half man. This has been going on for a long time from what I see (I myself have reverted it over 5 times). Can this article be protected so only registered users can edit? Is there a policy on deleting blocked userpages?

I'm asking this because you deleted a bunch of userpages of users I blocked and now I need the blocking rationales which I wrote on the talk pages. Luckily for me, I'm an admin so I can retrieve those, so it's not that big deal, but anyway, I'd like to see the policy according to which you're deleting the userpages. Werdnabot rollback?

Banned user talk pages

Hi, thanks for your note. I don't see how we can easily reverse the deletions given there are so many; and we may not necessarily remember all the names and know which ones to restore anyway. The thing is that, in order to spot sockpuppet patterns, we do need to keep track of all the accounts that have been used. That's why they're tagged. This applies to blocked and banned users alike. Apparently some Zephram Stark sockpuppet pages have been deleted and now have been lost track of. I don't know what a temporary user page category is, or who would have tagged them as such. Thanks for your note. How it works is this: when a sockpuppet account is identified, it is tagged as "suspected or confirmed sockpuppet of X". That user/talk page is then placed in the X sockpuppet category. Any editor who suspects X is editing with a sockpuppet in future can go to the category page, look through all the sockpuppet accounts, check out the editing style, compare for similarities, go to the sockpuppet's talk page, see which other editors have posted there and about what issues, and so on. All of this helps with identification. Therefore, please don't delete any user or talk pages that are tagged as sockpuppets, whether or not they have offensive user names. We need to keep all the pages tagged as sockpuppets. It is not the separate accounts that are important in themselves, but their link to the sockpuppeteer. Re:Userpage

Thanks! You gave me a good framework on which to build. I'm going to twiddle with it some more, but I want to spend some time with this style for a while first. Neat, clean lines are very soothing, and I need a lot of soothing. ;-)

I'm still having trouble with the status switcher script but it's got to be either a browser or a OS incompatibility. I'm on a Mac and I've debugged it in Safari, Camino (my favorite), and in Firefox versions 1.5 and 2.0 – no dice. I knew Firefox 2.0 for Mac was imminent so I waited for its release, but it didn't make a difference.

I'm not seeing the litle buttons on top like I (apparently) should, _but_ I can change /Status manually to in/out/busy and that triggers /StatusTemplate to change the box on my user page, so it sort of works. After considering it for a while I decided that it's not a big deal because I use cookies to stay logged in anyway. If I leave for more than a couple of days I'll just change it manually.
