Speedy deletion nomination of Tacocat edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Tacocat requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Cyber-ethnography edit

The changes you made cyber-ethnography looks good. If there's anything else you want to get in during the quarter, you should go ahead now or let me know that you're done. —mako 22:39, 21 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Benjamin Mako Hill: I don't think I'll make any more changes this quarter. I'll probably edit some more pages, because I do that sometimes. I still need to review another student's page for class.Groceryheist (talk) 17:30, 22 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Potential Topics edit

I have started working on some brainstorming in my sandbox! I am really hoping to find an article revolving around the gaming community and or figures in the community that do not yet have articles. I am definitely in the early stages, but making some progress. Emileehelm (talk) 05:48, 19 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Emileehelm, All the articles on your talk pages seem like potentially good choices. An article that is already a stub may be a safer choice because you will not have to demonstrate notability. That said, if you can find at least 2 or 3 reliable sources focusing on Draft:Timthetatman, I can see that working well. The person who previously tried to create that article didn't make a very strong effort. Starting a brand new article has its own challenges, but I think it is also easier in some ways and can be more rewarding. No matter what article you choose, the most important thing is that you can find enough new information from reliable sources to support the addition of at least 3 paragraphs of content to Wikipedia. COM 482 Topic edit

Hello, my name is Jay House. I would like to create an article on the Husky Sales Club at UW. There is no article on this topic already. Jhouse2 (talk) 00:35, 16 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi User:Jhouse2, I'm not sure if this is a good idea for an article or not. There are a few ways to go about finding out. First, I would search Wikipedia for articles on comparable topics. Does it seem like such clubs normally have articles about them? Second, I would scan WP:Note (Wikipedia's notability policies) to see if you can find a justification that the article topic is notable and worthy of inclusion in the encyclopedia. Since I think you are proposing an article about an organization, you should look at the specific notability criteria for organizations as WP:ORGCRIT. If both of these things work out then I would say you can do it, but if not then I suggest finding a new article. My own suspicion is that this may be too niche of a topic, but I might be wrong. Groceryheist (talk) 00:47, 16 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hi Nate, I am now going to add to Halo Top Creamery as my article. Thanks!Jhouse2 (talk) 21:58, 23 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

NJs Topic Proposal edit

Hey! I'm NJ, one of your students in COM482. I was maybe thinking about creating an article about the University of Washingtons Army ROTC program. Just because it was one of the first ROTC programs in the nation, has a rich history, has the most medal of honor recipients outside of a military school. I thought it would be interesting to create it because there are no articles on this topic already. nignaco (talk) 23:54, 15 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi NJ, This is an interesting idea! I'm not 100% sure if this is a workable idea for article. There are a few ways to go about finding out. First, I would search Wikipedia for articles on comparable topics. Does other ROTC programs have articles? Second, I would scan WP:Note (Wikipedia's notability policies) to see if you can find a justification that the article topic is notable and worthy of inclusion in the encyclopedia. Since I think you are proposing an article about an organization, you should look at the specific notability criteria for organizations as WP:ORGCRIT. If both of these things work out then it's probably a safe bet, but if not then I suggest finding a new idea. Groceryheist (talk) 18:04, 16 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hey, so I decided to change my topic to the Supreme(brand) article. It is rated as a "start-class" with mid-importance. As a streetwear and fashion enthusiast, I would like to improve this article by expanding on their collaborations, their impact and influence on pop culture and the underground reselling business they sparked. nignaco (talk) 23:59, 17 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hi NJ, That sounds good to me. I've heard of Supreme_(brand) and I agree a lot can be improved and expanded. I don't see any mention of the reselling trend right now, so if you have reliable sources for that I can see it being a particularly nice addition. I noticed that the page is semi-protected. This isn't a super big deal, but you should know what it means. Groceryheist (talk) 16:54, 18 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Selecting a Topic edit

Hey Nate, I am creating a new section in the article, CollectivismCollectivism, on conflict. I want to add the tendencies people from this culture have when dealing with conflict and the decision making process they go through. This is a C-Class article, so there is a lot of editing and additions that need to be made. Also, this is a level-5 vital article, so it is an important article to edit. Jasmair (talk) 00:05, 17 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi User:Jasmair, this seems like a great topic to work on, but I do have one concern, which is that the article is quite developed already, with a fair amount of content and over 50 sources. Of course, I can see many possible ways that the article might be improved, including by reorganizing and revising content that is already there. I want to be 100% clear that for this project I want you to add new content and sources to an article. If you have a more specific idea about what content you will add, please let me know what you are thinking. Also start looking for sources for your project, you'll need to find at least 2-3 sources from which you can draw enough information for at least 3 paragraphs of content. Once you have these sources in hand, you can be totally sure this will be a workable project. Groceryheist (talk) 01:28, 21 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hey User:Groceryheist, so I decided to change my topic. I started looking at articles and sources and realized that I would have had to connect research from different articles to come up with the information that I wanted to add (which is against Wikipedia standards of editing articles). Instead, I want to broaden my article to just Decision-making. There is no section on different decision-making styles, and from my research of 2-3 different sources, there are five different decision-making styles and I think that should be added to this article. Jasmair (talk) 00:47, 23 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hi Jasmair, this seems like a pretty reasonable choice, especially since you have already identified some sources that provide content that you can add. But keep in mind what I said above about working on an article that is already fairly developed. Looking at that article in particular, it seems like quite a disorganized mess with many different sections on various ideas. I don't think should be a major concern for you right now, just something to be aware of. Groceryheist (talk) 04:57, 23 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Kitty's topic edit

Hi Nate, I am Kitty (Wu Sau Ying), and about my article topic, I don't have a topic that I will do for sure. I am thinking a computer game like LOL (League of Legends) or my idol Tiffany Young, but not for sure. I checked the page of LOL was quite empty so I decided to do it, and I think it will be fun. Wusauying

Hi Kitty, I checked the League of Legends page, and to me it seems like that article is quite developed already. Looking at the Talk Page I see that it was nominated for good article status, but was denied. To me this suggests that there is room for improvement to the article and it is being actively worked on. Similarly, the article on Tiffany Young is C-class and I can see several people have recently edited it by looking at the history. Working on an article that is already somewhat developed can be a bit more challenging, for various reasons. It will be important for you to add some quality material that is well written and is not already in the article based on several reliable sources. There is an additional consideration in the case of Tiffany Young, since she's a living person you'll want to read and follow the special rules for biographies of living persons. I think either of these articles could work, I would make the decision based on whether or not you can find some reliable sources for information that you might add. Groceryheist (talk) 07:07, 18 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Wusauying: / @Groceryheist: Fair warning about League of Legends - that's a page that has been "over complete" in the past, as Wikipedia likes to leave gameplay details to specialized game wikis. That's not to say there isn't room for improvement, but a lot of the improvement would be about things like the development and evolution of the game, the history of the game, marketing & sales, and so on. Maybe work in spin-off articles like Riot Games or the various individual e-sports leagues. There is not a lot of work left for describing the game itself, which the article already probably has "too much" detail on, so something like a list of champions and what they do is not in the cards (that used to exist and was deleted). So if you're up for finding more sources like https://www.polygon.com/2016/9/13/12891656/the-past-present-and-future-of-league-of-legends-studio-riot-games and integrating them into the article, go for it, but that's the kind of content that is needed or could be added. SnowFire (talk) 21:28, 24 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hi @SnowFire: Thanks for your advice, I really appreciate it. @Wusauying: has selected League_of_Legends_Pro_League for her article right now. This seems in line with your suggestion to work on a particular e-sports league. I'd greatly value any more of your comments. Groceryheist (talk) 23:42, 24 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

COM 482 Introduction and Topic Suggestions edit

Hey Nate, I'm Tim a Communications major and Informatics minor in my last quarter at UW as an undergraduate. I was thinking of starting a new wikipedia page on a local alternative country band named 'The Hasslers' from Montana who have been on numerous tours and have played several festivals including Seattle's own Upstream festival. I was also thinking of doing a boxing-related page if that doesn't work out like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-two_combo which doesn't have any sources on its page and looks like it could use some editing. Any recommendations or tips would be helpful! Thanks a lot. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tmm113 (talkcontribs) 20:30, 18 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Tmm113, these are both interesting ideas for articles. For articles on bands see WP:Band for the notabiltiy criteria for musicians and ensembles. If you are confident that 'The Hasslers' meet the criteria based on reliable sources then I would feel comfortable with that choice. One-two_combo is a part of WikiProject boxing. This seems like a reasonable candidate for an article, but I'm a little bit concerned that you may not find many that much novel information in reliable sources. I know very little about boxing, so I might not be right about this. Based on a glance at WikiProject boxing, I notice that most of their good articles are about boxers or films. If you are looking for more ideas you might try browsing the list of project's stubs. Groceryheist (talk) 01:57, 21 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hey Groceryheist, I have a couple books on boxing I might be able to dig out and find some information about One-two_combo but it might not be a lot of information I could flesh out. I think you're right because I'm having a hard time finding more sources online for reputable sources. I found another article of a Disney movie character Robin Hood (the fox) that hasn't been started yet: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Robin_Hood_(fox)&action=edit&redlink=1 I found a lot of resources I could use to possibly start this page if this seems like a better option than my other proposals. Tmm113 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 20:47, 21 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hi Tm113, I found an article on Wikipedia for that character Robin_Hood_(Disney_character). It is start-class and if you think you have enough reliably sourced information to support 2 or 3 paragraphs of new and expanded content, then I think this would be a doable project. Groceryheist (talk) 22:09, 21 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

COM 482 Introduction edit

Hey Nate, this is Madeline J. I put my list of Article Selection Options in my sandbox, but I wanted to say I am leaning towards one of the Marie Kondo articles. Thanks! Mjohn55 (talk) 22:28, 18 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi User:Mjohn55, I think either of the Marie Kondo articles is a good candidate for a topic. Marie Kondo is famous but has low quality Wikipedia pages. I have only two concerns. My first concern is Kondo and her show are newly famous and you might have some trouble finding reliable sources with new information that is not already in the articles. So I suggest that you start looking for reliable sources and see if you can find enough material to support developing at least 3 new paragraphs of content. My second concern only really applies to the Marie Kondo article, which is that since Marie Kondo is a living person, the article on her is subject to the special Wikipedia policies for biographies of living persons. If you choose to work on that article you should make sure to learn and follow that policy. Groceryheist (talk) 23:45, 20 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Possible Articles for Expansion for COM 482 edit

Hi Nate, my name is Alia and I'm a fourth year student at the University of Washington double majoring in Communications and Psychology. I'm still exploring topics I might want to choose for my article, but all of the articles I'm thinking of doing can be found in my sandbox. I'm interested in possibly pursuing a field in User-Centered design, so the first two articles I chose were design based. I'm also from Dubai, and since it's a fairly small and developing country, it's lacking in a lot of Wikipages. The last concept which relates to an article request also seems like an interesting topic. I'm unsure of if I'll be able to get enough journalistic sources for topics that aren't "science-related", but let me know if you think any of the topics seem like a good one to pursue. Alialm97 (talk) 06:05, 19 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi User:Alialm97, any of those articles seems like a good candidate. They have all been around for some time, but have had little development, and they are related to your own personal interest. Another good reason to choose these articles is that they are categories of articles that are relatively under produced on Wikipedia. Since you are unsure if you'll have trouble finding good sources for a topic, that sounds like a good reason not to choose it. That said, I'm not sure I really agree that you'll have trouble finding sources for any of these topics in particular. Why don't you spend some time looking for reliable sources for two or three of your favorite options (maybe one about Dubai and one about User-centered design). If it seems like you can find enough (at least 2-3 reliable) sources for one of the topics then you can choose it. Groceryheist (talk) 23:25, 20 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Yuang's Topic edit

Hey, this is Yuang. Right now I'm really interested in the Cultural Appropriation topic. The topic is really relatable to real-life and there are multiple resources that I may spend some time work on. At the same time, I want to expand this topic and introduce new materials. Thanks.Realyuang (talk) 06:29, 19 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi User:Realyuang, this is certainly an interesting idea for a topic, but I am concerned because the article is already quite developed with a great deal of content and over 150 sources. While I can see many possible ways that the article might be improved, I also think best ways to improve the article would probably involve reorganizing and revising content that is already there rather than the addition of more examples. There will be some C-class articles that can be improved through the addition or expansion of a new section, but others that are relatively complete in terms of sections and content but that need more revision. Since the class project is built around you adding new content and sources to an article, I suggest that you consider another topic. That said, maybe you have a more specific idea about what content you will add. If so, please just let me know what you are thinking. Groceryheist (talk) 23:45, 20 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
I decide to change my topic. I noticed that there's no wikipedia page for one of my favorite clothing brand KITH NYC, which is becoming more popular through many collaborations with other well-known brands. I definitely want to start up the wikipedia page for the brand KITH. Also, they have the wikipedia page for the founder of KITH so it may also help with collect some sources. Do you think it's a good idea? Thanks.Realyuang (talk) 04:21, 21 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hi realyuang. This sounds like an interesting and workable idea. When creating a new article you need to demonstrate the notabiltiy of the topic. Since you want to write an article about a company, you should review Wikipedia's special notability policies for organizations and companies and see if you can find sources that justify the notabiltiy of KITH NYC. If you succeed then you will have a good topic for an article. Groceryheist (talk) 05:26, 21 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Topic Proposal - Jay edit

This is Jay Cho from COM 482. As I've discussed with you previously, I think I'd like to expand and improve the stub article on Namuwiki. Namuwiki is the 7th most accessed website in Korea, and one of the very first search results that pop up in Korean Google searches in just about any given topic. It is a subculture based wiki, so it's not as concerned about sources as Wikipedia might, but it still is a very large scale wiki that the Wikipedia article doesn't expand too much on aside from its Gender Equality criticism section(which is sketchy on its own, with a dead link and somewhat biased news article as reference). Kanraru (talk) 20:51, 22 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jay, this seems like a good choice to me. I'm looking forward to seeing how you will be able to improve the article! Groceryheist (talk) 00:11, 23 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Satory's Topic edit

Hi Nate, the two pages I am deciding between are Rap opera and SOB X RBE. I found both of these in the stub category and am really interested in both. Since both topics are becoming more popular, I think there will be a sufficient amount of sources. Satorymae (talk) 03:29, 23 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Satorymae. These both look like great article choices. Take your pick! I'm really excited to see how you will improve these articles! Groceryheist (talk) 04:57, 23 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Elisa's Topic Proposal edit

Hi Nate, this is Elisa. I've decided on improving the article on the Third Battle of the Isonzo. It's been listed as a start-class article, and is part of the WikiProject Military History. It is also part of the WikiProject Slovenia. Thus, I feel as though it is a good place to start. The Talk page says coverage and accuracy needs to be improved, so I was thinking of going more into detail on the page. Let me know if that works, thanks! Sunnysideup373 (talk) 20:45, 23 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Sunnysideup373, this seems good to me! I'm excited to see how this develops! Groceryheist (talk) 21:41, 23 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Topic Discussion edit

Hello! This is Nisha and I included some possible topics in my sandbox. I am leaning towards my first idea right now. Was wondering what you thought about it. At the moment, I am a little unsure about what to add to the current article for Sofitel, so I think that it might also be a good idea to create a new article for So Sofitel Bangkok entirely, as there isn't one yet. Please let me know what you think about this! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nishaa19 (talkcontribs) 22:34, 23 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Nishaa19, I took a look at your talk page and I think that both of the ideas for the television shows sound good. Since your family operates a Sofitel hotel, you working on the article might be perceived as a Conflict of Interest. Groceryheist (talk) 04:38, 24 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Groceryheist What do you think about me editing the page about the clothing brand 'Everlane'? It is currently rated C-class and I think with this topic I can find more articles and information about it than the television show. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nishaa19 (talkcontribs) 23:43, 24 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Nishaa19:, that sounds pretty good to me. Good luck! Groceryheist (talk) 00:11, 25 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Khanh's TOPICS edit

Hi! my name is Khanh Huynh and I'm one of the students in COM 482. This will be my last quarter as an undergraduate here. I'm still deciding on which article I would like to do. I want to do an article that would be relatable to real life. Meanwhile, I also want to expand on an existing article, like BMW M4. Thanks! Khuynh96 (talk)

Hi Khuynh96, I think the article on the BMW M4 could be a good choice for your article. The article is fairly developed already, with serval sections of content and over 10 sources. Of course, I can see many possible ways that the article might be improved and expanded, including by reorganizing and revising content that is already there. I want to be 100% clear that for this project I want you to add new content and sources to an article. If you can find additional sources with enough information to support 3 new paragraphs of content in the BMW M4 article then I think it's a good choice. Groceryheist (talk) 18:06, 24 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Groceryheist, I recently moved my article out of my sandbox and into the mainspace. While I moved my article out of the sandbox, I also noticed a section with the same topic as my article (BMW M4). So, I went ahead and improved on that section of the article (BMW M4) as well. Is that possible for me to do? Thanks! Khuynh96 (talk) 11:21, 19 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Potential Article Topic edit

Hi Nate!

This is Amy Tang, I am a student in you COM 482 class. I wanted to let you know about a few topics I am considering for my article.

The first topic is visual notetaking. There isn't an article on this topic, and I thought it would be interesting to write about. I'm currently in a research group where we are studying various visual notetaking methods and strategies. I enjoy the research we've been doing and thought it might be cool to do an article on it.

The second topic is technocreepiness. This is defined as creepy encounters or experiences with technology. I'm also in another research group where we focus heavily on analyzing literature and discussing creepy experiences. There isn't an article on this topic either, and I think it's very relatable to reality, as technology keeps advancing as we move forward in time.

Let me know what you think!

Hi Amytangg these both sound like interesting ideas for pages, I appriciate wanting to write articles about topics related to your research projects, but I still have a few concerns. There are many concepts in the academic literature that don't measure up to Wikipedia's notability critieria so I want you to be sure that you can find enough reliable secondary sources for your article. My second concern is that working on pages related to your own areas of research carries additional risks. You should be mindful of the policies on conflicts of interest and original research. If you have adequate sources to justify notability for one of these topics and you feel comfortable under the WP:COI then I say you can work on either page. Groceryheist (talk) 18:06, 24 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hi Nate, I decided to do my research and article on visual note taking/sketchnoting. I mentioned in class on Thursday that I was having trouble finding credible secondary sources to conduct my research. I spent some time surfing the web and found some sources I was thinking on using. I would appreciate any kind of feedback on these sources, and will use your feedback in making my edits for Tuesday's peer review.

I was also wondering if using videos found on Youtube would be a credible source. These videos were very informative about the different kinds of techniques people could use...
Hope to hear from you soon.
Thanks!

Hi {ping|Amytangg}, this seems great! I'm really excited to see how this article develops! I'm not personally very familiar with standards around using videos as sources, but I found this explanatory essay which seems to offer some reasonable guidelines. Megan's Article Selection edit

Hello my name is Megan Joss, I have decided to create the article for Hello Molly, a clothing brand. After searching through articles that needed to be created on Wikipedia, I began to look at clothing sites and thought I would enjoy making the page for Hello Molly because I have shopped there before.

Hi Megan, this seems like a good idea for an article topic to me. I did a quick google news search and saw at least a few stories from what seem like reliable sources. I recommend that you check out WP:CORP, Wikipedia's notability policies for companies to help you use reliable secondary sources and to make it clear from your article that the subject is notable. Art+Feminism, Jacob Lawrence Gallery, Saturday, April 6th, 1-5 PM edit

For more info see

Wikipedia’s gender trouble is well-documented. In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors were women. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity is not: content is skewed by the lack of representation from women.

Let’s change that.

To help change this, the Jacob Lawrence Gallery is continuing a series of Edit-a-thons to improve Wikipedia's coverage of womxn and gender non-binary artists of color.

Childcare, snacks from local businesses, and editing tutorials will be provided.

All you need to bring is your laptop, power cord, and ideas. No previous Wikipedia experience required!

Everyone is welcome. Access to UW wifi will be provided for non-UW affiliated participants.

Description
  • Free parking is normally available on campus after 12pm on Saturdays.
  • Check the Gallery's website for information about getting there.
  • The ‘Big Four,’ or the four white male artists that comprised the Northwest School, were the subject of the famous 1953 LIFE magazine article, "Mystic Painters of the Northwest": Guy Anderson, Kenneth Callahan, Morris Graves, and Mark Tobey. Each of these artists have robust pages on Wikipedia. However, key female-identifying artists from this time such as Margaret Gove Cafferman — who Mark Tobey cited as an influence on his work — lack Wikipedia articles.[* 1] To help address the imbalance of representation on Wikipedia, the Jacob Lawrence Gallery is organizing an Art + Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon focused on female-identifying artists of the Pacific Northwest.
  • Childcare, snacks from local businesses, editing tutorials, books, and lists of artists will be provided.
  • All you need to bring is your laptop, power cord, and ideas. No previous Wikipedia experience required!

500/30 edit

Of course it applies to these talk pages:

The extended confirmed restriction is imposed on edits and pages related to the history of Jews and antisemitism in Poland during World War II (1933–45), including the Holocaust in Poland, broadly construed.

[1]

It was extended from just articles (May 2021) to all pages dealing with the topic (September 2021) *precisely* because the Icewhiz sockpuppetry and disruption spread from just articles and article talk pages to many other types of Wikipedia pages.

Can you please refrain from restoring abusive and racist comments by accounts which have been blocked and which are very likely sock puppets of an indef banned user? Not a good look. Thanks. Volunteer Marek 15:50, 9 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

My reading of WP:ARBECR is that the talk page exception is pretty broad allowing "constructive comments and edit requests related to articles in the topic area, provided they are not disruptive." Groceryheist (talk) 16:06, 9 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
I don't think those edits were constructive comments or edit requests? :-) I think this will come down to whether Signpost talk is an "internal project discussion" or not (is Signpost an independent newspaper hosted on enwiki or a WikiProject). Levivich (talk) 16:25, 9 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
