JCRB/MEGV

I've put a case up at Wikipedia:Requests_for_checkuser/Case/JCRB. Narson (talk) 21:03, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Reading it though, I think it is the wrong place. I'm going to try and find the correct one, if I find it I will withdraw the case. I've withdrawn it, if it gets disruptive, I'll poke around WP:ANI and WP:SSP.Narson (talk) 21:05, 2 June 2008 (UTC) (edited Narson (talk) 21:23, 2 June 2008 (UTC))

tagging cats of birds of

You recently tagged the Cape Petrel as a "bird of Gibraltar". The Cape Petrel is restricted to the Southern hemisphere, and is occasionally a vagrant to the north, but as a rule we don't tag vagrants as being of a place. Regular migrants and residents yes, but the Summer Tanager is hardly a European bird (for example) just because one hapless individual was blown across the Atlantic. I'd suggest not tagging birds labeled as (A). Sabine's Sunbird talk 02:22, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Maltese people. Note that the three-revert rule prohibits making more than three reversions on a single page within a 24 hour period. Additionally, users who perform a large number of reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring, even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing. Please do not repeatedly revert edits, but use the talk page to work towards wording and content that gains a consensus among editors. If necessary, pursue dispute resolution. Jaysweet (talk) 15:26, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

Sounds good. I didn't really have a problem with your edits, but since you were both already over the limit, I felt that if I issued a warning to one of you, I had to issue it to both of you. It's great to hear you're discussing it on the Talk page. list of gibraltarians

Hi there, i think that the elected leader of the Student Association and the national Youth Cuncil of gibratar is note worthy enough? also im not sure but i think mr Montado sits on the Youth Advisory Council (which he pushed government to create) and currently advises the Government of Gibraltar on Youth Policy? he has also appeared many times on GBC Television as has Mr Bristow and mr Montado has also appeared on Viewpoint to discuss many issues. i find it odd that these young people who are doing or have done so much in Gibraltar 'dont have enough noteriaty' —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gibonwiki (talkcontribs) 17:42, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

Concern over Alfred Holmes article

Gibmetal77, I would firstly like to say that I have nothing personal against Alfred Holmes. I am concerned that Alfred Holmes is a person who is not notable enough to warrant an article on Wikipedia focusing on him. If you look at Wikipedia:Notability (people), you will be able to see that a person may not be considered notable if the person has not been "the subject of published secondary source material which is reliable, intellectually independent, and independent of the subject". You may argue that because he was mentioned in a scientific study, he has been the subject of published secondary source material. However, he was not the focus of the study, and therefore was not the subject. You may argue that because he was mentioned in a history of the Regiment, that criteria is followed. However, I have examined the history of the Regiment to which a link was provided to on the article, and I have found no mention of Alfred Holmes.

If the criteria which is described in Wikipedia:Notability (people) is not followed, I am afraid I shall consider marking the Alfred Holmes article for deletion. Please edit the article so that it does fit the criteria. I will be willing to help anyway I can. If it doesn't seem the article will fit the criteria within 5 days, then I shall start the deletion procedure.

I would also like to say that when the article said "For this he was best known locally by the nickname of "El de los monos" (Spanish: He of the monkeys)", a source was provided, but it did not mention Alfred Holmes at all. As a result, I have removed the reference, and replaced it with a 'citation needed' note. Please do not re-insert the reference I have deleted, as it talks about a source that does not mention Alfred Holmes.

Also, please examine Wikipedia:COI, which deals with conflict of interest. From the information supplied with the photo of Alfred Holmes, it would appear that you are a relative of him. This is not a bad thing in regards to the article, so long as you do not include material which is biased as a result of your family link with Alfred Holmes.

Thank you for reading. EasyPeasy21 (talk) 20:53, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for your response to my comments on this talk page. I am happy with extending the deadline I have stated, but only if you can refer me to some specific "published secondary source material which is reliable, intellectually independent, and independent of the subject" about Alfred Holmes by tomorrow. I know that this sounds harsh, but I do not want to keep an article up in which there is no evidence regarding it to suggest it covers a notable person. I do not need you to insert the sources (which covers the aforementioned criteria) you may refer me to in the article. Just so long as I know such sources exist that will be ok. I do not mean to be draconian. Articles that may break notability have to be treated very seriously. I hope you understand. EasyPeasy21 (talk) 20:18, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

I don't know if you will be able to see this before you come back from your vacation, but I have extended the deadline. I look forward to working with you on the article. I wish you a good holiday. EasyPeasy21 (talk) 12:23, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Gibmetal77, I hope you have had a nice holiday. I have noticed from the list of your contributions that you have been editing Wikipedia since July 22, but I have not observed any progress on the Alfred Holmes article yet. Please could you begin to insert information into it from "published secondary source material which is reliable, intellectually independent, and independent of the subject"" by 00:00 GMT July 28. If that sort of information isn't added by that time, I will nominate the article for deletion. Thank you in advance. EasyPeasy21 (talk) 20:02, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Alfred Holmes appears to now statisy notability guidelines

Gibmetal77, I am pleased to inform you that "published secondary source material which is reliable, [and] intellectually independent" in which Alfred Holmes is the subject of the information has been found. It has been employed in the article. I am now statisfied that Alfred Holmes is notable enough to deserve an article on Wikipedia. I believe the debate over whether the article should be deleted will continue for a few more days. However, I believe, although I cannot be sure, that the article will not get deleted now. You may consider thanking Kernel Saunters, and Darkspots, as they have done the most to edit the article so that it fits the notability guidelines.

If I may suggest, I believe you should work now to try and add citations to the information regarding his early life, and his death. If you can direct me to any sources to achieve that goal, I will be happy to help. Thank you for reading. EasyPeasy21 (talk) 19:37, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Changing the names of the Maltese village articles

There is currently an ongoing debate about whether the articles on Maltese villages should be given their English names. Kyarichy has already gone and renamed a bunch of articles such as as Kalkara citing these changes from an old obsolete paper and http://www.geody.com, even though these names are no longer in use.

The naming conventions clearly state that foreign location names commonly used in English should be used as the article names.

It would be appreciated if you could assist us in this discussion. ~ ► Wykebjs ◄ (userpage | talk) 10:59, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Portal:Gibraltar/Did you know

Hi Gibmetal77. I understand your reasoning but think goes against the very principles of wikipedia. A portal is not a wikiproject since it's focused as a specialized representation of an area of knowledge. Therefore, it must stick to the five pillars (notably to NPV). If an old DYK is a POV, I can't see any valid reason to include it into a portal. If it's not possible to reach an agreement on the phrasing maybe it would be better to remove it. What do you think? Regards --Ecemaml (talk) 21:01, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned

Hi Gibmetal, I've included very few additions yet (most of them come from the history of Gibraltar article). Do you have any specific dubious statement that requires a reference? I'll provide them ASAP. Best regards --Ecemaml (talk) 22:49, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Well, it can be named "Parroquia de Santa María" since using the term "parroquia" to name the church is an extension of the original meaning of the term "parroquia" (parish). A parish is the area a given church server. By extension, the same term can be applied to the church. However, it seems to me that the use of "parroquia" as equivalent of "iglesia parroquial" is relatively new. I think anyway, that possibly all the terms could have been applied (I just wanted to emphasize the name of the church advocation -maybe this is not the right term in English- in its original language, Spanish; and the fact that there was never a cathedral in Gibraltar until the creation of the apostolic vicariate of Gibraltar). However, I'll look for references. The main problem is that my books in Spanish are more focused on the sovereignty that in the history and curiously my books in English are more verbose in the purely historical part. I'll look for sources anyway. Best regards --Ecemaml (talk) 12:26, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Thank you

For this. I didn't do it myself since I didn't wanted it to be perceived as a provocation. The strange thing is that, beside the sieges, the relationships across the frontier were, until the closure by the Spanish dictator Franco, much more intense than nowadays. In such an article I just aims to tell the story of the exodus, the places where they settled down and how the Gibraltar symbols ended up in sites such as Algeciras or San Roque. I think it's an encyclopedic issue and has nothing to be with the (I must say) anachronistic claim on Gibraltar. Best regards and thank you again --Ecemaml (talk) 10:31, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Yes, even recognized that I can be somehow biased, the only purpose of the article is providing an account of the destination of the refugees. Please, ask for sources or correct me whenever you think an unattributed POV is introduced as a fact. I'll correct it or look for sources if applicable. Best regards --Ecemaml (talk) 12:28, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Saludos--Willtron (?)   19:52, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

The Convent

Hi Gibmetal77. Could you please take a look at this reference. It seems as if some part of the article have been verbatim copied from there (see for example the section on King's Chapel). I don't think I'm fluenty enough in English to correct it myself. Best regards --Ecemaml (talk) 07:31, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

Moorish Castle

Hi Gibmetal. There seems to be an error in the article infobox. Just below the map it reads: <div style="position: absolute; z-index: 2; top: Expression error: Missing operand for *%; left: 10827%; height: 0; width: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;"> As I haven't followed the evolution of the article I don't think where the error is. Best regards --Ecemaml (talk) 13:01, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

It seems that the problem is that you must include the decimal values of latitude and longitude in the infobox attributes named in the same way. Otherwise, map_type should be empty. Best regards --Ecemaml (talk) 13:11, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

I guess you've seen the documentation and the example in such a page. However, I'm not able to figure out how to set the offsets of the coordinates. I've managed for removing the error notice, but I don't think the marker is in the right place. Best regards --Ecemaml (talk) 13:53, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

I dare...

... to ask for your help. Would you mind, if you've got time and the wish to do it, helping me with a very short translation? It's an old-style Spanish (it the answer of the Gibraltar city council to the prince of Hesse when asked for surrender) and I don't trust my English too much. Here you have it:

How good is my translation? Corrections and enhancements would be highly appreciated. Best regards and many thanks in advance --Ecemaml (talk) 21:34, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

Well my source is a Spanish PhD Thesis from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. You can see it here. Unfortunately, it's not complete and the last two sections, CAPITULO IV. GIBRALTAR DESDE CARLOS IVA LA CRISIS DE 1898: UN OBJETIVO SECUNDARIO y CAPÍTULO V. EL CONTENCIOSO HISPANO-BRITANICO SOBRE LOS LIMITES DE GIBRALTAR: ¿USURPACION O DERECHO? are not included. A pity! The text I asked you to translate comes from pg. 64. That section is quite interesting since it also quotes the letter sent by the prince of Hesse to the Gibraltar garrison asking for surrender, the letter by the Archduke Charles, the terms of surrender, the letter sent by the City Council to king Philip V swearing its fidelity to the king (BTW, it will be my next assignment ;-))... It's pretty interesting, since it provides a lot of material, even if with a natural Spanish bias (I've not fully read it and I can't assess it.... being a PhD Thesis I expect it will be as neutral as possible).
With regard to your question, I don't mind. I was born in Madrid and I learned English through the public education system. After getting my degree I eventually joined a multinational company and from time to time I have to go to the company HQs for some weeks (as now, for instance). As you can understand, the internal language of the company is English. My wife lived for several years in Edimburg and currently we're trying to give our daughter a bilingual education. Fortunaltey, it's her the one that takes the role of taking to her in English. Well, I know that my English is far from being perfect, but I usually get to be understood. Writing non-technical texts, such as those of wikipedia, are quite complex for me, as you've noticed. Hopefully, you correct my imperfect texts and it finally translates in good contents for wikipedia. Best regards --Ecemaml (talk) 16:19, 2 October 2008 (UTC) PS: I assume that you were born in Gibraltar and you learned both English and Spanish in there :-)

Paella Article

I'm afraid I disagree with three of your edits.

First: I disagree with your removal of the Valencian paella pic from the info box. I see nothing wrong with having two pics there. Also, I view this as pertinent for the situation, given that seafood paella is a derivation of Valencian paella. Also, since you live so close to Spain, you should know that Valencian paella is very popular there.

Second: I feel uncomfortable with the second sentence of the first paragraph where you've written it as follows: "It is considered...". You've written this sentence in the passive voice. However, I used the active voice: "Spaniards consider...". Notice that in the passive voice it's impossible know who's doing the considering. Whereas in the active voice the writer must indicate that it's Spaniards who consider paella one of Spain's national dishes.

Third: You insist on the using the phrase Valencian Community. While I'm aware that Spaniards use this term, most foreigners are likely to find it confusing. It could mean a community outside of Spain or a small community within a Spanish city. The term Valencian region with a link to the article on the Valencian Community prevents this confusion while pointing out exactly where this region is located and the fact that it consists of three provinces.

By the way, there is one more minor issue I'd like to bring up. Sentence fragments don't end with periods. For some reason you insist on ending the pics captions with periods despite the fact that they're quite obviously fragments.

I'm going to make the above three changes. If you revert the changes, I will wait a couple of days and revert it back. If you revert it again I will appeal to an administrator for help on this issue. Pasta4470 (talk) 21:28, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

Not a problem. I nearly removed it myself, but apart from his last edit I thought it seemed like ill informed but justifiable comment on the issue and didn't want to remove one edit someone made to their own work etc. I must admit, now I know Gibraltar is full of pirates, it sounds far cooler than it did before. ;) --Narson ~ Talk 19:12, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

{{Gibraltar-bio-stub}}

Hi - I see you have recently created one or more new stub types. As it states at Wikipedia:Stub, at the top of most stub categories, and in many other places on Wikipedia, it is recommended that new stub types are proposed prior to creation at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals, in order to check whether the new stub type is already covered by existing stub types, whether it is named according to stub naming guidelines, whether it is otherwise correctly formatted, whether it reaches the standard threshold for creation of a new stub type, and whether it crosses existing stub type hierarchies. Your new stub type is currently listed at WP:WSS/D - please feel free to make any comments there as to any rationale for this stub type. And please, in future, consider proposing new stub types first!. IMO it's a good one worth keeping, but it's still worth going through the proposal process, just to keep everyone in the loop. Hi again - I've replied over at WP:WSS/D but basically you need to find/make a few more stubs on Gibraltarian people (there need to be 60 for a separate category, so you're about half way), then propose the category at WP:WSS/P. Grutness...wha? 23:02, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
