Ballaugh edit

Thanks for your message. That's an interesting one! There is clearly then no real consensus for the exact translation. Not really sure what to do though? Would it be best to take out the translation and just leave the Manx wording maybe for now? What I will do though is send some emails to try and find out what it should be. cheers, --♦Tangerines♦·Talk 15:20, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Odd Isaachsen Willoch edit

Absolutely within my field of interest. I'll dig through my library for more on Willoch, and then let's co-DYK nom him. Manxruler (talk) 04:30, 7 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

It's good enough for DYK, although in a few hours I'll have gone through some more sources for some more details. As with Rushen I'll still add a few more things before trying for GA. Manxruler (talk) 13:54, 7 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Better articles edit

Fair enough, the only reason I don't use those templates is because I'm a really lazy person. but don't forget - you have to wikilink dates (unless Mediawiki has improved this aspect in the past year or so), because otherwise they don't format correctly. In short, you can set in "preferences" how you want your dates (eg. M D Y or D M Y) and that only applies if you wikilink the dates. but again I could be wrong about this too, my knowledge of Wikipedia's technical subtleties stops at around 2007 or so... ugen64 (talk) 16:59, 8 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

I did very recently find a short mentioning of Løken Tore Pryser's 2007 book Kvinner i hemmelige tjenester: Etterretning i Norden under den annen verdenskrig. I'll add some from that soon. Manxruler (talk) 18:55, 10 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yes, these are articles that should be written, and I'm quite familiar with ship articles. As to Irma I've even spoken to a close friend of the Norwegian naval officer that fired the torpedoes, not that it matters here on Wikipedia. I've got the necessary books, I can get on it tomorrow with regards to Irma and also the cargo ship Henry, the ship that was sunk in the same incident. Manxruler (talk) 23:16, 21 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Nice that the articles already have images ready. Manxruler (talk) 23:19, 21 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Seeing as Irma will require at least a double nom, preferably a quadruple nom, I'll do Sanct Svithun first. Irma is also the most controversial and will require the most research. I'm on the case, though. Manxruler (talk) 12:57, 22 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Category:Danish expatriate footballers in Norway edit

Hello. I know that you are an active and helpful member of WP:FOOTY and wanted to make sure you agreed with the Project's consensus on "triple-intersect" categories like this. I noticed you reverted my edit to Allan Gaarde's article, but I was trying to move these categories to the parent Category:Expatriate footballers in Norway per a CfD and consensus on the WP:FOOTY talk page. Please join the discussion there if you disagree. Best regards. Jogurney (talk) 14:59, 18 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

I reverted you because I felt it wasn't justified (the edit summary did not hint towards this either), but after that I read some discussions on some talk pages, and I won't revert no more. If a consensus has been formed I don't have objections against that. Punkmorten (talk) 22:21, 18 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hello. Thank you for the reminder about these categories. I stopped working on clearing them out because it seemed like such a huge task, and I had made some mistakes (leaving out the Category:Fooian expatriate footballers). Also, it seems some people want to delete the expatriate footballer categories completely. However, since an admin has been deleting the empty categories, I'll make a new effort at clearing them. Best regards. Jogurney (talk) 14:07, 11 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

A tag has been placed on Stein H. Annexstad requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia.   The 100 DYK Medal
I hereby bestow this (slightly belated) honor in recognition of crossing the DYK century mark. Your efforts to expand the encyclopedic content on people, places and all other things Norwegian -- a drastically underrepresented portion of Wikipedia -- is only enhanced by the fact that almost all of these articles were created and expanded directly by you. Keep up the great work! Remember, 200 is not far away. Alansohn (talk) 15:37, 1 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Democrats edit

Congratulations with the 100 DYKs! You've been spitting them out like a fax machine gone bananas ;)

To the point: Any idea what ideology the Democrats of Norway hail to? Probably some sort of libertarianism, but what type? Their web site is silent on the issue (though not on the particulars of their interest). Arsenikk (talk) 22:28, 2 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Their party is a strange breed. Some libertarian views ("don't waste taxpayer money", free trade), but on the other hand anti-EU, pro-armed interventions abroad, more discipline and police, tougher on drugs but softer on alcohol, less immigration, some Christian conservative views, "family values". Coupled with excplicitly pro-Israel views one could be tempted to label them as a European version of the Christian right. Sure, I've heard the term "populist" be applied before, but that's hardly very descriptive in itself (also, is it even logical that a party with 0.1% of the votes is populist?) review edit

Hi Punkmorten. Please review your actions at Neatypus obliquus and comment on the following:

  • You deleted a ref no such family as neatypus". Clearly I would know this, I just stubbed the monotypic genus. Why did you not fix it?
  • I happen to agree that it should not be at the name of the genus,[1] it was done in accordance with the guidelines. Can you show me where and when this changed? Thanks – cygnis insignis 16:38, 30 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
    • Hi! (1) When I clicked on the original link, I got the message "Family does not exist." Obviously there was a mistake, so I tried to change the "family" parameter to "genus", but that didn't work. To fix it, I now realize that I FishBase family should be replaced by FishBase species. I didn't know at the time. (2) I don't know of any change. The rationale "when a genus has only one species, the genus name should be a redirect to the species" was taken from Category:Redirects from monotypic taxa, which contains hundreds of genus names that are redirects. To make the genus name a redirect, I moved the page. Punkmorten (talk) 16:58, 30 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the reply, I think deleting a ref deserves a notice if you are unable to fix an obvious error. I must have used the reference?! I found the source of that recent change to a long standing convention, someone was well intentioned, but surprisingly unilateral and bold. I came to strike the question. There are quite a few articles under that arrangement, as with the flora here, some further discussion is likely to arise before a large scale change to TOL. cygnis insignis 17:19, 30 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Do you agree with it? Punkmorten (talk) 22:25, 22 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'am not sure about it. The Stortinget bio page is down at the moment. Members of the national assembly are notable per WP:BIO. It does not say anything deputy representatives. It looks like a bordeline case of notability. The "new" user has sure made himself familiar with different policies though. Funny with SPAs (so far) that is only interested in such a low profile article. Rettetast (talk) 22:58, 22 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
I fixed the link. It is true that she were deputy number five, so she did not actually meet in a parliamentary session. If they met, they're definitely notable (being a de facto legislator). I don't normally create articles about people who haven't met. Back then I thought the combination of the three was interesting enough to write about, though. Ingrid Espelid pic byline edit

Hei. (In English for the record): I noticed you removed the template {{byline|Jarle Vines}} from the Ingrid Espelid image I put up. Is it because you know from experience we're not obliged to post such a byline, or because you didn't look at the attribution conditions? I thought this was a must, so if you could share with me your reasoning.. Cheers, MURGH disc. 23:04, 27 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

More out of old habit, since the template did not exist in en:wiki until recently. Don't worry, I won't be warring over it. That said, I strongly disagree that the photographer be credited within articles. Our writers, copyeditors etc don't make such a demand. Can one even consider an image released under such conditions "free"? Punkmorten (talk) 23:15, 27 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
No, I'm with you and would much rather avoid it if it won't cause problems. The credit is a click away for anyone to see anyway. For a hook, how about "..is considered the "culinary mother" of Norway..?" The translation isn't such a leap and sources plentiful. MURGH disc. 23:32, 27 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Let's try that. You could link mother like this: mother. Punkmorten (talk) 08:35, 28 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
My initial thought was that is a great link to use, but isn't there a distinction between "mother of.." and "—mother" ? Espelid is influential but not exactly to Norwegian food culture as Daguerre is to photo, as Marx is to communism? I must admit I'm not crystal clear about the Norwegian expression either, if it is the primary meaning or a double entendre of matmor that is "provider of food to a pet".. MURGH disc. 10:35, 28 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Answer to first question: yes, you may be right. The former has to do with birth and the latter with care. Punkmorten (talk) 19:12, 28 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
I seem to remember reading somewhere (in a featured article on Dagbla' or Aftenposten) that an authority in the field [of hairdressing trends] claimed she was the trend setter for all old women in Norway's hair styles, i.e. the expert claimed that most Norwegian women have the same hair style because of her. If verifiable and used as a hook, this would remove mother from the discussion, if that is our largest concern here on the encyclopedia. Arsenikk (talk) 21:57, 28 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Crazy, but I have actually read that article. Rettetast (talk) 22:06, 28 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
I considered the DN article claim, but thought it would be too long to phrase it correctly where there is needed a snappy hook. The nom is up so we'll see how it is received. MURGH disc. 23:56, 28 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

My DYKs edit

Hi Morten. I was having a look at your latest contributions to see if there was something interesting in my field of interest coming up when I noticed User:Manxruler/DYK. Thanks for creating it, I shall add a link to it on my user page. One question; it seems you feel that I should have some credit for my work on Kjeld Stub Irgens, and I agree with regards to that. Does this mean I can add Irgens to my official DYK list and count? Manxruler (talk) 22:52, 29 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

:I'll just be bold and go ahead and add it. Thanks. Or rather, seeing as I don't have a DYK credit notice on my talk page, I don't really feel comfortable doing that. If you feel I should have credit for Irgens, then please add the relevant DYK notice tag on my talk page. Cumbersome, I know, but I like doing things as much as possible by the book. Manxruler (talk) 22:55, 29 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for adding Irgens to my list. All I need now is for a talk page DYK tag. I've seen it added retrospectively before, so I don't think it would be a problem if you went ahead and did that too using {{subst:UpdatedDYK|date|year|Article name}}. Manxruler (talk) 23:59, 29 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

interest, My field of edit

Ah, yes. Administrasjonsrådet isn't exactly the easiest thing in Norwegian history to find information on. I'll have a look through my book collection tomorrow evening and see if I can find something on Eger. Great work on all the biographical articles, by the way. I particularly like the very recent one on Ingrid Espelid Hovig. Manxruler (talk) 00:14, 30 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Having gone through my books I have regrettably been unable to track any information at all on C. W. Eger. I'm sure there are books that deals with him and the other members of the Administrative Council, but in any case I don't have them in my collection. It's still good enough for a DYK nom and I suggest that you go ahead and do that. Manxruler (talk) 19:40, 31 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for looking anyway. Up for DYK now. Punkmorten (talk) 20:35, 31 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Nice article, this. I actually considered writing that article last year, I might just make some contributions at some point. I'm glad someone took the time to write the article, and did a good job at it. Manxruler (talk) 16:22, 3 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I heard about Kayser passing the other day. What do you say we collaborate on writing and DYK-nominating an article on him? I believe I have quite a few books that mention him and there should be plenty of obituaries on him now. Manxruler (talk) 15:48, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Lazy journalists... You're right, of course. We can't use any of the articles if they're based on that completely unreferenced Norwegian Wikipedia article. I have found some other sources that I deem reliable and I'll start adding them soon. Manxruler (talk) 18:57, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
So, have you found something via Atekst? Manxruler (talk) 23:14, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Haven't had the time to sit down at the university, sorry. Punkmorten (talk) 19:34, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Take a look at this. We have something similar at NHH, and it allows me to sit in Germany or wherever and connect to Atekst and other nice stuff. Arsenikk (talk) 21:37, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
It would be nice to have an Atekst check done, I would feel even better about our nom in that case. Manxruler (talk) 04:13, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
I just nominated Kayser. Manxruler (talk) 16:35, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Good work on Atekst. Regrettably I have never heard of Wictor Esbensen before and I doubt I have any sources on him. As to the Måløy operation I have not heard about that either, but I shall look around a bit, there should be info somewhere. Cheers. Manxruler (talk) 16:58, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

With regards to how long Kayser served in the Guards, it's hard to say. The Guards might have been different, but in the regular army of the late 1930s the conscription period was as far as I remember 60 days. It might be safest to leave it out. Manxruler (talk) 17:21, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Aha, according to the Norwegian Defence Forces website the Guards had a pre-World War II service time of eight months. So I'd say that 1937-1938 for Kayser is probably correct. Manxruler (talk) 17:26, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Did you find any info an Kayser's decoration, by the way? If he got all that are listed on Norwegian Wiki they should be mentioned in some of the articles you found on Atekst. Manxruler (talk) 17:36, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

No, only mentions that he was highly decorated. I didn't look specifically for it, though, so I can for citations for each award, but next week. Punkmorten (talk) 17:38, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
That's cool. We should list his decorations, but it's no hurry. Manxruler (talk) 17:44, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

With regards to HMY Alexandra, I'm inclined to think that since she was nothing less than a Royal Yacht under that name it's probably fair for the article to have that name. She is on my short-list of ship articles to expand in a little while. Manxruler (talk) 10:26, 9 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

In the case of Alexandra/Prins Olav there's also some room for controversy with reagrds to some details, so I'm going to spend some time to ensure that I get all the facts straight and find good sources. Manxruler (talk) 11:33, 9 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I haven't heard about Nils Uhlin Hansen before, but I'll look around. On another point, I was going to OK the Basis Nord nom over at DYK, but I can't see that the base was established after the German–Soviet Commercial Agreement (1940). At least the article isn't specific on that point. Manxruler (talk) 21:42, 10 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I tweaked it. I'm not too sure about the chronology either; what I wanted to convey was the degree of cooperation between the two states, which I'm sure many readers/people will find really surprising. Punkmorten (talk) 21:51, 10 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I'll re-evaluate it soon. I agree, not everyone knows of the close cooperation that existed between Hitler and Stalin up until June 1941. A cooperation not exactly filled with a deep sense of trust but an important cooperation none the less. Manxruler (talk) 22:00, 10 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Regarding Uhlin Hansen, what kind of a source is the "Special Forces Roll Of Honour"? It looks a lot like a wiki to me. Manxruler (talk) 23:08, 10 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
I had that thought as well, so we should replace that source with something more reliable. But we can use it as a hint on what to look for. Punkmorten (talk) 08:32, 11 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
I think this may be useful as a pointer for what to look for. At least the person who wrote the thing gave a name (John Robertson), as well as a source for his info, one Stig Olav Johansen. Now, I wouldn't say that that source was verifiable, but the listed info at least gives some hints as to what search words to use in a further search. Manxruler (talk) 09:35, 11 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Great work on Kayser today, by the way. I added the decorations to the infobox. And I saw that you had found some more sources on Hansen, good stuff. Manxruler (talk) 20:24, 11 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thumbs up for Hansen. I just did a little copy-editing, will see if I can find something to add in a while. Great work once again. Manxruler (talk) 20:34, 12 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well... Not directly. The units involved in that battle were all regular army ones. But Dovreskogen rifle association did provide security for King Haakon VII during the fighting and escorted him out of the Dovre area. That might very well be the same people that Tronstad helped organize. Manxruler (talk) 13:00, 15 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Great that you're expanding Tronstad, by the way. Really good stuff. Manxruler (talk) 13:01, 15 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Good stuff, that. Although I would have liked to have had more exact dates as to when in April 1940 he did these things. This sounds like the first few days after the invasion, but doesn't say so specifically. The part about covering the retreat from Østerdalen (with rifle association folks, I presume) is interesting, although what effect this might all have had on the fighting I couldn't say. The Germans only tried to do an airborne landing once during the post-invasion fighting, at Dombås, and that was done with fallschirmjägers, so they didn't really need anywhere to land aircraft. Much of the German transport aircraft were also withdrawn to continent after the initial invasion, to prepare for the invasion of France. I think the safe thing to write based on that source would be that Tronstad helped to organize volunteers from the rifle associations (that's an article we should have, by the way) during the Norwegian Campaign. With regards to the defence line at Hjerkinn, the importance of that depends on when it was formed, but all the units at the Battle of Dombås were from the regular army, transiting through the area when the Germans made their para attack. Manxruler (talk) 13:18, 15 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
I agree that it should probably be removed, since we don't really have the dates to make that claim. Sure, GA should be possible. Do you think you can expand it to DYK too? Manxruler (talk) 14:35, 15 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
You wouldn't happen to know what kind of OBE Tronstad got? There are several different ones. Manxruler (talk) 15:31, 15 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Having googled "Order of the British Empire with Palms" I got zero exact hits. Manxruler (talk) 15:35, 15 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Better not spread it then; let's remove it. Punkmorten (talk) 21:25, 19 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks edit

Recommendation noted with appreciation. In the past I've simply left Norwegian articles date links unchanged, using the date link convention the original author followed. Henceforth, should I translate, I'll rid the world of these generally useless links. Skål - Williamborg (Bill) 03:31, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Appreciate your reminder that I can move pages - I was indeed aware of it, having moved pages in the past. However I am only able to edit intermittently (as an engineer, I travel extensively) and find some of the editing techniques grow rusty between stints. So I appreciate the dedication of folks like yourself who are willing to take on the administrative roles as well as monitor segments of the encyclopedia to improve its quality. This allows me to focus - in those periods when I do have some time to contribute - on simply getting new material onto the page rather than on mastering all the ever-evolving rules, techniques, formats, expectations & wiki-arcania of the Wikipedia.
Keep up your good work. Williamborg (Bill) 15:26, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Norwegian Women's Footballers edit

Hello again. Thanks for the heads up about the user Oceanh (talk · contribs) creating new women's football articles. Yes, I will go ahead and add as much as I can on the newer/current players first, then go back and do some research on the older/retired players as I have time. Thanks again for all you do around here. =)

Concerning Ljubinje (town) edit

A good day to you; I took the liberty of restoring the page above. It wasn't even tagged as a speedy, and it was listed at WP:PNT; so, Imho it did not qualify as a speedy. It may well be that the article is deleted after evaluation, but let's see. Cheers and happy editing. Lectonar (talk) 08:52, 9 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

It has no useful content. Punkmorten (talk) 09:10, 9 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
And how to you know this? Is the language one that you speak? Even if it only says that the town has 10.000 inhabitants, why wouldn't that be useful? Lectonar (talk) 09:32, 9 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
No town has exactly 10,000 inhabitants. It's guesswork, and without a source, and not even written in English, no, it's no decent starting point for an article. It's better if someone starts from scratch. Now I'm not taking this any further. Punkmorten (talk) 09:36, 9 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Any relation? edit

Hi Morten. You wouldn't happen to know if Christian Holtermann Knudsen would by any chance be related to the Norwegian World War II officer Hans Reidar Holtermann? Manxruler (talk) 20:32, 10 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I don't know. It would probably have to be grandson or grandnephew, but I can't find anything about it. Punkmorten (talk) 20:41, 10 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Template talk:Did you know edit

I've reverted your removal of Trunnell Elementary School from T:TDYK. Even though the AfD won't be closed until February 15, the article nomination should remain at T:TDYK. If the AfD discussion is closed as keep, then we should make an exception and allow it to appear on the main page even if it's a couple days late. If the AfD discussion is closed as merge or delete, then that's the time that the DYK nomination should be removed. I believe that this is fair because an AfD discussion should not prevent the creator from having his/her article appear on the main page. Cheers, Cunard (talk) 09:01, 11 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Regular deputies edit

Do deputy members of the Storting, who met regularly while the person they deputized were members of the cabinet, but were never themselves ever elected a regular member, go in the members of deputy members cat? Arsenikk (talk) 20:00, 12 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Good question. The answer is: 1) people who meet because of cabinet representation (which is what you said) or death, go in the members category. The Storting biographies will use the wording "møtte fast" or "rykket opp". 2) People who met because of illness, travel (standing committees visiting abroad, deputations to international organizations etc) or other short-term absence go in the deputy members category. Punkmorten (talk) 20:09, 12 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
After all, the deputy members are elected in the same way as regular members. Punkmorten (talk) 20:14, 12 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Finnish DYK edit

Thanks for correcting me about the Finnish DYKs! The date I mentioned was the most recent in the list of Finland-related DYKs at WP:FINLAND (it obviously hadn't been updated for a while). Good job with the Koivuranta article, I will add it to the list now, and to the selection of DYKs at the Finland Portal. If you see any other Finland-related DYKs you should feel free to add it to the list. Thanks, and have a nice day! Spiby 11:16, 13 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thorbjørn Jagland edit

Hey, I'm Hunter. I'm doing the GAN review for Thorbjørn Jagland. I saw some of your recent changes and agreed with all of them, except the removal of the Wikipedia stuff. From my completely unbiased perspective, I think it's warranted (sources are fine, and the coverage it appears to have received indicates notability). However, I did start a topic in the Talk page letting people know there was a disagreement about it, so if anybody else disagrees with its inclusion, it can be raised there.

Please feel free to join the discussion at that talk page, but I'd recommend we try to come to a consensus before simply removing it again. Please don't take this as a sign of disrespect to you; we're all in this for the same reason, which is to make these articles as accurate and complete as possible! --Hunter Kahn (talk) 21:28, 22 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

DYK template edit

Hey Punkmorten, I've noticed that when you and some other editors are nominating DYKs, sometimes the template fails to show "Self nom at ~~~~~" (as in this one), and other times it doesn't. I have experimented in the sandbox for a while and can't get it to come up without showing that text, so I can't figure out what could be causing it. Next time you make a nomination and see it not show that, could you send me a copy of the exact text you used in the edit window so I can see what might be causing it? (Or, if you remember what you typed last time, that would work too.) rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 19:41, 25 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

That's weird...it's supposed to automatically put in "Self nom" when you leave |nominator= blank, and it does most of the time (including when I test it) but I keep seeing things on T:TDYK when it didn't do it. For example, when I use

{{subst:NewDYKnom | article=Example | hook=... that this is an '''[[Example]]''' | author=Rjanag | status=new}}

it yields

====[[Example]]====

Created by Rjanag (talk). Self nom at 00:03, 26 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Same for when I do it without status=new, and when I replace |author= with |writer= or |creator= ... I can't figure out what some people are doing differently to get it to not put "Self nom at 00:03, 26 February 2009 (UTC)" . rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 00:03, 26 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
