I was in quite a foul mood on Friday, and regretfully let my temperment affect my editing. As it turned out, there was only a minor discrepancy between us, which was easily fixed. Everyone is hurt when an article is protected, and I must own part of the fault in the page's protection. 2tuntony (talk) 08:16, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

World Learning deletion

Hi Garion96: You deleted the page for the international nonprofit, World Learning. World Learning is the umbrella organizaiton that runs programs like the Experiment in International Living and the School for International Training, which wikipedia mis-identifies as independent organizations (with no mention of World Learning). Please see http://www.worldlearning.org. Is it possible to restore the deletion of the World Learning page? Supposedly the page was deleted for copyright reasons because the info was copied directly from the website. If you restore the deletion, I can help rewrite the text to make sure it's not pilfered from the website. RE: warning

Please be aware that you are only adding fuel to a fire that does not need to be flamed. To be clear I used Twinkle to warn an I.P that has been wanred in the past an edit they had made had been reverted. My warning *was* justified and it had nothing to do with what another editor has now made it it into. Have a nice day. EDIT - actually the edit you speak of was *not* the I.P that I warned - user talk page history confirms this, and also confirms that they have been warned by others. The I.P I warned however appears to be part of the same source system as it has the same tag - a look at this I.P's talk page history will also confirm other warnings. For example this warning is far more severe than mine was. And if you note in the summary of the warning I placed it says General note: Nonconstructive editing on... Please be more aware of the facts before you come to my talk page placing warnings about these items. Soundvisions1 (talk) 20:18, 10 December 2010 (UTC)

Unbelievable. I just start working at Sandia about 6 months ago, and I spend some of my spare time on lunch breaks fixing problem articles, and this is what happens. I can assure you that these are indeed shared IPs, through a proxy, and the old warnings were not directed toward me. Thank you Garion96 for your thoughtful response to this incident. 134.253.26.6 (talk) 22:50, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
Since the invention of NAT and other forms of proxies, the concept of tracing users via their IP addresses has been and will continue to be fatally flawed. Many forum administrators (including myself) have campaigned strenuously to reduce or eliminate this aberrant practice, but there are a lot of folks who errantly believe "one user, one IP address" or is corallary, "one IP address, one user." In truth, one user can have many IP addresses, such as every time they log in while sitting in a different coffee shop, at the airport, a friend's house, etc. Similarly, one IP address can have many users. An estimated 35% of people in America still don't have any Internet access in their homes, so a number of them use Wikipedia from work. Some companies own an IP address for every device on their network, but they're the exceptions, not the rule. Most companies have between one and several IP addresses behind which their many thousands of employees work. DoggerDan24 (talk) 17:37, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

Shore Country Day School?

Not sure if I'm doing this correctly! But, was curious to know if the page that was already deleted (Shore Country Day School) is something that I want to reopen, or start from scratch. I believe I had started it a few years back but hadn't spent any more time updating it.

Thanks

History of The Catholic University of America

Hello - Several years ago I created an article called History of The Catholic University of America with content provided by a number of former students. I got permission from each of them and sent each of their emails in according to the procedures. I just checked it, and I see that you have deleted it. Can you tell me why, and more importantly what can be done to restore it? Thanks! --Briancua (talk) 22:30, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

Kitchen Nightmares

Our Aussie edit warrior is back again, and has reverted your edit. He's now on his fourth IP making this edit and twisting consensus to suit his agenda. I'm not sure what can be done, but I thought a heads up was in order. Drmargi (talk) 07:18, 6 March 2011 (UTC)

That'll do it. For some odd reason, it never occurs to me to request semi- protection. Thank you. Drmargi (talk) 09:37, 6 March 2011 (UTC)
Seeing that the main culprit Drmargi is the one who originally reverted everyone's edits and continues to make twisted claims on consensus, I see this problem will never end. After the protection has ended, I will revert his changes again as before. Thank you.. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.51.105.74 (talk) 13:34, 9 March 2011 (UTC)

Don't look now, but the Aussie IP edit warrior has moved over to the UK show (Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares) and has started making the same edits as on the US article. He's just done an original edit and (as of this writing) one revert, but it's obvious from the edit summary that it's the same person. Would you mind taking a peek and perhaps semi-protecting the article before this gets out of hand? Drmargi (talk) 14:59, 18 March 2011 (UTC)

ETA: he's reverted again, and now outed himself as the same IP editor as on the US article. We long ago, and arduously, resolved the issue of reporting restaurant closures. He's unwilling to work to gain new consensus and plans to edit war, as his comment above makes clear. Drmargi (talk) 14:59, 18 March 2011 (UTC)
Listen here. It is Drmargi who keeps on reverting the closures of the restaurants even when he can't differentiate whether the closures happened during the broadcast and taping of the show and what took place months after the closures. We have not resolved the issue of these closures of the restaurants in spite of DrMargi's insistence that it has been done. He is unwilling to show proof (when the burden is on him to do so) that concensus has been made for regarding removal of mention of the closures of the restaurants that took placed during the broadcast of the episodes of Kitchen Nightmares and Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. He would rather close all avenues to discuss the issue by messaging moderators to block any further constructive edits to the articles. 58.165.73.190 (talk) 15:19, 18 March 2011 (UTC)
I'm noticing a familiar ring to some of these arguments, as though I've seen them before. Drmargi (talk) 19:37, 18 March 2011 (UTC)

CP listing I should not close

Hi. :) We are in need of a different admin to review List of highest-grossing Bollywood films (a list generated by estimation rather than actual statistics) and handle it appropriately according to non-free content. There's more information at Talk:List of highest-grossing Bollywood films#Copyright concerns. And, of course, there's additional feedback from our current attorney (pending the induction of the new guy later this month) at Wikipedia talk:NFC#Attorney feedback. Since the handling of non-free content is subjective, I think a different admin needs to close that listing (Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2011 February 24). If you're not available, please just let me know, and I'll knock on somebody else's door. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:52, 6 March 2011 (UTC)

Will have a look at it tomorrow if no one closed it before than. It indeed is not an easy case I saw from a quick glance. Garion96 (talk) 19:43, 6 March 2011 (UTC)
Yes, I agree. Sorry to bother you with it, but since I tagged it I felt like somebody else needed to work on the close. Most of the time, I'm alone at CP, so I need to seek somebody out in those instances. :) I had reduced the first list to the top 10, but was reverted. I subsequently noticed that one of the lists reproduced there is 10 out of 37, which is a pretty high percentage. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 19:50, 6 March 2011 (UTC)

Hello, My name is Natalia Ioana Olaru and I am a final year master student in the Corporate Communication programme at the Aarhus School of Business in Denmark. I am currently working on my final paper on the topic of user motivation to create content on collaborative media websites, the focus being Wikipedia. As a sample I chose the English and Danish portals. I would like to invite you for an online interview on the topic of what motivates you, to participate in editing and creating articles for this platform. I plan on doing the actual interviews in the period between 1st and the 15th of May via Skype, MSN or Yahoo Messenger. I am, however, open to other channels of communication too. Please let me know if you would like to participate in this interview and the preferred channel.

Sherlock Holmes TV series move

Hello Garion96. Thanks for moving the Sherlock Holmes (1984–1994 TV series) series back the other day. Unfortunately, the same editor has moved it again. Considering the fact that this editor mostly edits tennis and bio articles they may not be aware of naming conventions for TV series. I don't know whether it is worth hassling over but if you want to either move it aagain or start a discussion on the talk page I will back you up in this situation. I know it is years since we edited/discussed various wikiarticles but my memory fails me over what they were so I will just say that it is nice to see that you are still here and continued happy editing. MSU Interview

Dear Garion96,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chlopeck (talkcontribs) 23:30, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

Nomination of List of crooners for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article List of crooners is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of crooners (2nd nomination) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Ridernyc (talk) 14:22, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

Sandbox

I understand your concern and on a notable or even close to notable article you'd be correct. I opened that for two reasons, one the autobiography template was ignored and it was being submitted to AFC. Now in my opinion I would be ultimately irked if I put in the time on a article that someone else knew could not have came through and explained was the effort was futile. It's not meant as a bite so much as a save time and irritant. I know not all will agree. Hell In A Bucket (talk) 08:48, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

What if we were to move all those links coming in to Wikipedia:Free speech on Wikipedia?

Then would it be alright to direct Wikipedia:Free speech to WP:WikiProject Freedom of speech?

Okay, well, if I respectfully disagree, what would be the next step for me? Could I post to WP:REQMOVE? That way, we could have some discussion with other members of the community? — Cirt (talk) 22:30, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Because one is an internal page for essentially wiki jargon enabling, the other, the WikiProject, is totally focused on what this website should be focused on, namely, improving the quality of encyclopedia articles. :) I hope you can understand this perspective even if you don't fully agree with it yet, — Cirt (talk) 22:38, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Well, hopefully don't say "never", because anything is possible. Hopefully you can retain some openness in your heart to reconsider this sometime in the future before the end of eternity such that it will not be just "never". :) — Cirt (talk) 22:45, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

I've thought about it, and you've made some good points, perhaps we can revisit this at a later date in the future. — Cirt (talk) 00:27, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Request for suggestions?

You've helpfully been successful in pointing out that we could certainly use some additional activity and input at WP:WikiProject Freedom of speech. :)

Perhaps you could think of some suggestions and recommendations of ways that we can help generate additional interest in our WikiProject?

Thank you for your consideration,

The NeverEnding Story (song)

Hi there. I don't like reverting edits from registered users, so I thought I'd instead ask you why you removed the French cd cover from The NeverEnding Story (song). Your edit summary just noted you removed it, but didn't say why. As the song was re-recorded in French, AND the French cover also includes an image from the film that the English version does not, I thought including it in the article was very appropriate. Freikorp (talk) 23:03, 10 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I removed the image (could have explained it better) cause it fails Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria#8. Since there already is one image of the single, there is no need for a second one. That it's in french and has an image of the movie still does not justify it's inclusion. Also, there is no mention of the french re-recording at all in the article. Garion96 (talk) 23:20, 10 May 2013 (UTC)
The intro paragraph specifies the title of the french version and states "The English version was performed by Limahl and Beth Anderson; the French version was performed by Limahl and Ann Calvert." I added that information and verified it with the reference some time ago, though I note the reference is now dead and the new Limahl website mentions nothing of who performed the female vocals in either song. I know it isn't RS but if you search youtube for the french version you'll find it, just if you want to prove it exists. I'll start looking for a reference for it to add more information on it to the article. Freikorp (talk) 05:15, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
You're right. I missed reading that one the intro. But that's still irrelevant to the image itself of course. Garion96 (talk) 13:19, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

"childish"?

Can you explain why you call the "Unsolved" template "childish" in this edit? (And approximately how many thousands of Wikipedia mathematics articles have you edited?) Michael Hardy (talk) 18:50, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

Your second question first. Why would you remotely care about that, is that in any way relevant? My comment on the TFD would suddenly become less important? (The TFD looks like a keep result btw) Basically, it's none of your business except of course anyone can check it by going to my contributions. A better question would be how many Wikipedia mathematics articles have you read. And that likely is a 100 or so.
About childish. It reminds me of an elementary school book. They also have balloons in the middle of a text with a problem or question. I much prefer the unsolved problem in prose in the text maybe with a separate heading. See Neutron electric dipole moment for an example.

I think the reason for my second question was that when one uses words like "childish", with a suggestion that "childishness" is inappropriate, it suggests that the thing in the article that is being called "childish" would be appreciated only by those too inexperienced to be the intended audience of the article. And I notice that some of the people favoring keeping the template are experienced both professionally and as Wikipedians. That suggests they're not finding it childish.

It is true that textbooks often have "balloons" that often are childish---suitable only for children or for people who are taking a course only to get a grade or satisfy a requirement. But I think that's because of the _content_ of the balloons. Michael Hardy (talk) 00:16, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
