Speedy deletion of Template:California State University, Long Beach

A tag has been placed on Template:California State University, Long Beach requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. Bigfoot

I reverted you inclusion of who and fact templates from Bigfoot. The scientific community is not ambiguous—unlike "some scientists say"—it means the vast majority of scientists. I removed the fact template because I thought this is known widely enough that we don't need to cite it, but if you really think this is something that needs a citation we could add some. —Fiziker ^t c 18:30, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

I think the phrase "scientific community" is very ambiguous. For one thing, it's very generalized. Even if you can prove that the majority of scientists believe Bigfoot doesn't exist, a small but significant minority may still exist. I personally am not aware of any prominent or reputable advocates, but I was more concerned with the language itself, since it seems to set an [undesirable] precedent of majority rules. --Foolishgrunt (talk) 04:54, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Saying the scientific community believes something is saying that there is a consensus in the community on some topic. It isn't simply majority rules, but rather it is about the community—actually just the branches that deals with the relevant topics—looking at the issue and all but a small minority coming to the same opinion from multiple lines of evidence. There are in fact some scientists who do think that Bigfoot exists, but they are only a handful of scientists compared the to large number that have looked at the evidence and made the opposite conclusion. Similar small groups are present in all scientific fields but they are insignificant enough to invalidate something like "scientists believe that global warming is real" or "that the Big Bang occurred". —Fiziker ^t c 18:36, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

I'm not saying that a small number of dissenters should trump the majority opinion. But when we start using phrases like "the scientific community" without any sort of qualifier, people will assume that we're talking about a unanimous consensus, which is never true. We're essentially closing the door on any further discussion, no matter how legitimate. Once again, I'm not saying I believe Bigfoot is real; I'm more interested in the principal of the matter. I just think it would be healthier to have a citation to help qualify the claim. --Foolishgrunt (talk) 20:56, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

People should think that there is consensus, which does not necessarily mean that it's unanimous. I've considered replacing the phrase with something about the consensus of the scientific community but that's also brought about the same issues of people claiming that it's too ambiguous. CSULB Correction

Hey there, the reason I didn't correct the mistake was that I don't think Long Beach State has released their Fall 2010 admission data yet, so I can't say how many offers of admission were actually given. I guess the targeted enrollment can be posted by itself, but I'm not sure if that in itself is notable, maybe it is.

Here's the actual press release that was cited in the Long Beach Post article:

“While these numbers point to excellence in quality and recognition of our campus’ reputation,” he added, “what’s unfortunate for most of these applicants is that due to continuing reductions to CSULB’s budget, only 5,500 will actually enroll as students in the fall.”

The author of the Long Beach Post article incorrectly took this to mean that only 5,500 offers of admission would be extended, but this is incorrect. I think using the press release would be a better source anyway because it came directly from the school.
