GOCE September 2012 drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors September 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up Participation: Out of 41 people who signed up this drive, 28 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing July, August, September and October 2011 from the backlog. This means that, for the first time since the drives began, the backlog is less than a year. At least 677 tagged articles were copy edited, although 365 new ones were added during the month. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2341 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 54 requests outstanding before September 2012 as well as eight of those made in September. Might I suggest to you in good faith that what you have chosen to know about me is based on media misrepresentation. I have noticed in the past that you have made various derogatory comments about me which directly reflect on my life, my musical credentials and my considerable achievements as a composer. I understand well why you feel the way you do, but your feelings in all honesty, are unfounded because you do not know me personally, nor do I know you. I would like now to sincerely ask you in the spirit of goodwill to cease making such comments in public forums.Please oblige me in my request. There is no need to apologise. You knew no better and I understand. I thank you for your reply and your word of faith here as you havewritten it. Suffice to say, the attack that I was accused of launching on the Wiggles in 2005 just weeks after my mother's passing when I was still grieving her loss and which generated much ill feeling towards me to almost see me hospitalised with a break down, was actually the calculated work of one journalist whose name I will not mention here, following the initial appearance of Christine Sam's article which I do not acknowledge. Both journalists, Christine Sams and the one whose name I will not mention promised me their interviews with me would reflect my interest in early childhood music and speak of my own work. What appeared was vastly different to what they lead me to believe they would write. Both journalists knew my mother had just died after a lifetime of debilitating illnesses and my sacrificing a considerable amount of my working life as a composer and musician to care for her. All references to this particular journalist's deplorable article that he wrote following on from Christine Sams's article, claiming I had launched an attack on The Wiggles, which was divided up and disseminated world wide (one article even gave my name as its author!) have since been removed from the internet. Sam's article regrettably has remained.Please be assured that I have never attacked The Wiggles. I would be foolish to do so. That being said, I do however feel Anthony has yet to pay me the courtesy Greg Page paid me in his autobiography "Now and Then". Greg and I have since been in contact with one another. It is my place to live with what has been and what will be and no one else's outside the more private world of The Wiggles to judge. The fact is that the majority of the debut album was written, arranged and financed by me at Anthony's request which gave to the Wiggles a contract with the ABC (for whom I once worked) to record a further two Cds thus contributing to the success story they have become today and thus enabling you to enjoy them as you do. That is a good thing. I am happy they have brought much pleasure into your life and the lives of others. I am personally very proud of that because I maintain a very keen sense in music for children and the education of children at a developmentally appropriate level. Please understand I am in no way upset with you, and again, there is no need for you to offer an apology. Consider this whenever you read a newspaper : much of the nuance and the spin that are placed on stories, for better or for worse, are the result of sub-editing. It was once publicly noted that I had apparently died in 1995 at the age of 37. Now, that's a bit spooky - yes?

As we move closer to the Christmas season, I would like to wish you and yours a blessed Christmas and a most prosperous New Year. Thank you Jena, I appreciate that you have taken the time to write me here.

I understand there have been some concerns over additions and deletions to my entry here at Wikipedia. I must say, I myself have had some concerns over how I have been portrayed.

I have addressed a letter to you and Maproom at the "talk" section of my page here which I hope will clarify things for you a little. I have written you both respectfully in the spirit of consultation.

I would, if you feel it is appropriate, appreciate a more comprehensive entry on my work as a composer if you are able to attend to it. I am well established here in Australia and also known overseas. My music is broadcast, performed and studied frequently. Aside from accessing my own website for any biographical information or reviews of my works by other noted musicians in the

About the Music" section (Miriam Hyde who has an entry here at Wikipedia was my mentor) you might care simply to google me and access my biographical pages at the Australia Music Centre, Publications by Wirripang and even the National Library of Austrralia who keep an archive on me.

Further, if you feel any need to contact me directly through my website,you are most welcome to do so. I would be happy to answer any questions that you might have that would assist you if you are intending to rewrite and flesh out my page more factually.

I have noticed that Jena has made some comments in reference to me. I do not know Jena personally, nor does she know me. I wish her well but I would ask of her that she cease dismissing me as something less than I am that is based solely on any manipulations and misrepresentations of the media and the Australian Press.It is not the first time Jena has made such derogatory comments about me in public forums, and whilst I understand that she knows no better, I feel it is inappropriate and unfair and that it is time she stopped doing so. Again, I wish her well.

For your information, the only media articles that I personally acknowledge are :

1. A Life Less Wiggly (Steve Dow, Sydney Morning Herald)

2. The Fifth Man (Cheryl Critchley, Herald Sun - available at my website)

I do not altogether acknowldege the Christine Sams article for the "tailored" nuance she placed upon it that seemed geared more towards sensationalism and because I had stated to her that I was in no way whatsoever "bitter" about not being a Wiggle, yet she chose to use that word.I can only suggest she did not wish for truth to get in the way of what she felt was a better "story".

Please understand Christine that I ask nothing more than the entry about me at Wikipedia be factual and as comprehensive as you might see fit within Wiki's own guidlines.Many students here in Australia who are assigned my music to play for graded exams and diplomas through the Australian Examinations Board turn to Wikipedia as the first point of reference. Given Wikipedia prides itself on fact and honesty, it would be in their best interest, surely, that what is written about me is factual and an honest appraisal of my standing and my work. I often turn to Wikpedia myself when searching out information on topics as a point of reference to place my faith in.

Mr. Wilcher, I did see the note on your bio's talk page and was intending to respond when I got the chance. I understand all your concerns; it's my intention to address them, again when I have the chance. This, my talk page, is probably the best place to discuss this issue, since you're making a request of me to improve your bio. I'm committed to ensuring that all Wiggles-related articles on Wikipedia are of high quality. It's been my experience that a lot of the sources out there in the Aussie press about The Wiggles tend to be a bit on the sensational side, so I understand your concern that the information out there about you is accurate and balanced, and your problems with the Sams article. I was unaware of the sources you provide above, so I appreciate you bringing them to my attention. That has happened to me before in my editing career, with other articles; an interested party has contacted me about one of the articles I improve, provided me with sources, and requested that I use them in a specific article. And I have always complied with their requests.

However, Jena's point about your edits are well-made, if not very well-said. Your edits were reverted off-hand because they were made from an anonymous account. As Jena intimidated, we have to deal with vandalism to these articles regularly, so she assumed that your edits were malicious. It would help if you set up an account so that we can be sure that you're who you say you are, and then you can communicate with everyone involved in editing The Wiggles' articles. I also recommend that you not edit your own bio again, but request edits, to avoid conflict of interest issues, and because it's against Wikipedia policy for subjects to edit their own articles. We all want the same thing: accurate and reliable information being put out there. Understand, though, that we're all busy people, so I ask that you be patient. I assure you that I will work on your bio and hopefully bring up to the quality it deserves in the next week or so, and then other interested editors will chime in as well. I see you've fleshed out my entry. Thank you. It's better. I appreciate that you have done it. There are just a couple of things that are not quite correct if/when you have time..........

1. "Autumn Rain" was not recorded by me at 17 years of age . It was composed by me and published by J Albert & Sons Pty Ltd when I was 17 years of age. It was later broadcast by the ABC played by the pianist Arthur de Rozario and this year the pianist Jeanell Carrigan recorded it for Wirripang on the Cd titled "Wind Chimes".

2. "Archie's Theme" was not actually from any recording I had previously done but was a piece I had written at 14 years of age that was later recorded by me at the request of Anthony Field for the Wiggles debut album. It appears twice on the Wiggles eponymous debut album. The piece had originally been titled "Summer Dance" but renamed based on the nickname Anthony Field gave me (Archie) because of my association with the Liberace Foundation for the Performing and Creative Arts and Liberace's family and friends (see "The Performer" section of my website). I had been invited to play at celebrations honouring Liberace in the United States in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 1994 where I stayed as a guest in his Palm Springs Villa (see "Tribute" section of my website : "A Sequin of Events"). "Archie's Theme" has since been recorded in its original form under its original title "Summer Dance" by the pianist Elpis Liossatos for the Tall Poppies Cd release titled "Lift Off : Piano Music for Children".

3. Neta Maughan and Elpis Liossatos are not really composers. Neta Maughan is a highly respected piano teacher and Elpis Liossatos was a concert pianist and graduate of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music.

4. Just to clarify, I didn't write a letter of resignation leaving the Wiggles because I wanted to pursue a career in classical music (I already had a career in classical music anyway) or to devote more time to my composing. I wrote the letter on the advice of the Manager of the group back then whose name was Jeremy Fabinyi so as not to incur any further expenses for the recording of future albums although it was later verbally agreed I would stay behind the scenes as a writer. I think Steve Dow touches upon this in his article A Life Less Wiggly. If the entry on me is going to make mention of this, it should do so correctly, otherwise I wonder if it might not be best to leave mention of the letter out. As proof the letter which was written in September 1991 was later disregarded, Anthony Field asked me back to be in the film clip for Dorothy the Dinosaur which was filmed six months later in March of 1992 and later released on video by the ABC. I believe the ABC clip can be seen at Youtube. I'm not sure how you want to handle this, so I'll leave it with you to think about :)

5. Perhaps you could mention that I am an Elected Life Member of the Australasian Performing Rights Association and that my music is frequently broadcast by ABC-FM and other classical FM stations throughout Australia. You might find further information you can use when you have time at Wirripang's website and the website for the Australia Music Centre (who represent me) as both have bio pages for me :)

6. I worked for the ABC in the early 80s, not the 90s :)

Mr. Wilcher, thanks for the feedback. I've made a couple of changes based on it, mostly because my additions were matters of interpretation of the sources at hand. Please understand, though, that while feedback is appreciated in any form, it's not customary for the subjects of Wikipedia bios to direct the content of their articles. I can't just add information based upon your word here; I, like all Wikipedia editors, base the content of their edits to all articles in this encyclopedia on reliable, third-party sources, and not upon personal interviews, which Wikipedia interprets as original research and against policy. Wikipedia also resists using self-published sources such as personal webpages as sources unless there's no other reliable source available. I've made the editorial decision to use you webpage because there aren't any sources available about you, and because sometimes comprehensiveness is more important. To be honest, parts of your bio on your webpage are unclear, which is why I made some interpretations. The Steve Dow article, I feel, is clear about the circumstances of your letter of resignation to The Wiggles, and because the SMH is more reliable than your webpage, I had to go with what it said. I'll look at the two webpages you provided and see if there's anything worth adding. It's my intention to include a YouTube clip at the end of your bio as well. Again, thanks for the input. As I suggested, yes, perhaps if you could visit the bios about me at Wirripang's website (www.australiancomposers.com.au) and the Australia Music Centre, it might be best as far as my work as a composer is concerned, to bring the page here into line with them, especially for students that study my work and who reference me first through Wikipedia.

Clive Robertson who you mention as one I have written music for is a high profiled radio presenter, journalist and reporter who used to read the evening news on ABC here in Australia. He broadcast much of music for ABC radio. It was through Mr. Robertson that my Ballade was recorded on an ABC Classics Cd by pianist Sally Whitwell. It might be appropriate to acknowledge/clarify his standing as a broadcaster and journalist rather than just list his name, out of courtesy - yes? - if you feel it is important.

I was't sure it was so strict. I know better now. Thank you. I think you will find my webpage (the bio) states I played four times for the Liberace Foundation. Those four times were specifically in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 1994. Perhaps it could be changed back to 4 times so as to tally. In other forums on the net over the years I have stated it was 4 times. I think too that perhaps the reference to APRA should clarify that it is the Australian Performing Rights Association.

I've realised where the discrepancy occurred about my playing for the Liberace celebrations. I played 4 times as is stated at the bio page of my website but I stayed 3 times in his home as is stated in the remembrance piece "A Sequin of Events". I think you've mixed the sources for this, which is understandable.Can my page here be changed back to reflect that I had played 4 times, those time being in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 1994 for clarification please? Done; I've removed lots of passages that I thought were WP:COATRACK, and made changes per WP:SAID (see my edit summaries). The article is still full of essay-like comments, such as "According to (author)", "(Author) says that ..." etc. The constant namedropping of academics makes it read like a college essay IMO. I didn't remove these because that goes beyond my remit as a copy-editor. I think I've done the best I can here. Please feel free to contact me about any issues arising from the copy-edit. GOCE November drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors November 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up <hr style="border-bottom: 1px solid rgba( 109, 193, 240, 0.75 );" Participation: Thanks to all who participated! It struck me just now that it's the perfect piece to run for the inauguration but that's next Monday, so now I'm feeling doubly bad because it sat in the PR queue for such a long time and I took too long with the review. No abso-freakin' way. Actually, I was considering it a few weeks back, but then SandyGeorgia was blocked and that was that. As I state here [1], I wouldn't voluntarily choose to be a part of any group that would do such a thing. And I certainly wouldn't want to put myself through another RkA, especially now with where I am personally. I'd much rather go about my merry way, working on my little insignificant articles and contributing to my little section of this project. I'd request you to reconsider your stand at your convenience; as I honestly believe that administrative tools do help benchmark editors like you quite a lot while editing. In my opinion and in what I've seen over the years, the admin group is not a unipolar set of closely knit individuals; in fact, I might even mention that there is nothing that defines the administrative set as a 'group' at all. There are diverse philosophies that editors with administrative tools maintain, while working for the benefit of the project. The gaining of administrative tools does not stamp one with a no-return ticket to such a 'group'. Far from it, the gaining of administrative tools for sparkling editors like you would allow the project to be benefited considerably. The RfA is a request for the tools, rather than a request to be part of the administrative community. That's one reason I wrote to Sandy some days back requesting her to apply for an RfA. That's the same reason I am requesting you to reconsider your position. It's the project that goes into a lag when editors like you have to request others for administrative action. WikiCup 2013 January newsletter

Signups are now closed; we have our final 127 contestants for this year's competition. 64 contestants will make it to the next round at the end of February, but we're already seeing strong scoring compared to previous years. Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) currently leads, with 358 points. At this stage in 2012, the leader ( Grapple X (submissions)) had 342 points, while in 2011, the leader had 228 points. We also have a large number of scorers when compared with this stage in previous years. 12george1 (submissions) was the first competitor to score this year, as he was last year, with a detailed good article review. Some other firsts:

• 12george1 (submissions) was also the first to score for an article, with the good article Hurricane Gordon (2000). Again, this is a repeat of last year!
• Buggie111 (submissions) was the first to score for a did you know, with Marquis Flowers.
• Spencer (submissions) was the first to score for an in the news, with 2013 Houphouët-Boigny stampede.
• Status (submissions) was the first to score for a featured list, with list of Billboard Social 50 number-one artists.
• Adam Cuerden (submissions) was the first to score for a featured picture, with File:Thure de Thulstrup - L. Prang and Co. - Battle of Gettysburg - Restoration by Adam Cuerden.jpg.

Featured articles, portals and topics, as well as good topics, are yet to feature in the competition.

This year, the bonus points system has been reworked, with bonus points on offer for old articles prepared for did you know, and "multiplier" points reworked to become more linear. For details, please see Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. There have been some teething problems as the bot has worked its way around the new system, but issues should mostly be ironed out- please report any problems to the WikiCup talk page. Here are some participants worthy of note with regards to the bonus points:

• Ed! (submissions) was the first to score bonus points, with Portland-class cruiser, a good article.
• Hawkeye7 (submissions) has the highest overall bonus points, as well as the highest scoring article, thanks to his work on Enrico Fermi, now a good article. The biography of such a significant figure to the history of science warrants nearly five times the normal score.

Also, a quick mention of The C of E (submissions), who may well have already written the oddest article of the WikiCup this year: did you know that the Fucking mayor objected to Fucking Hell on the grounds that there was no Fucking brewery? The gauntlet has been thrown down; can anyone beat it?

Sesame Street research2

I was just on my way over to check your replies and support when I saw it was archived! Bad luck on that one, and ping me when you renominate. On the Jamaican thing, there are two schools of thought on Patois/Patwah and whether or not it is a language in itself. But, to the best of my knowledge there are very few, if any, Jamaicans who don't speak fluent English as well as Patois. So perhaps "translation" is inaccurate (and potentially slightly insulting on the part of the author!). Maybe "cultural translation" would be better if the source would stretch to it, as I imagine that many scenarios may not have meant quite as much in Jamaica. Yah, I just don't have enough time for Wikipedia. The first time its FAC failed because of lack of support. I think people are genuinely afraid of it, which just cracks me up. One reviewer said that he felt the article was complicated for many readers and that it was too technical. I'm very proud of the fact that an article about Sesame Street is actually over the heads of lots of folks, and that I was the one who did most of the writing and the research. This time, in its second FAC, it got support but late and I didn't have enough time at the end of last week to address all the feedback. I'll resubmit it in a couple of days and definitely ping you and others who have been involved. I usually don't do that, since it feels like gaming the system to me, but I think that in this case, it should be okay. And I'll go back and improve the Jamaica stuff; as an editor, I struggle with being true to the source but ensuring that the information is accurate. In general, after an FAC is archived, the nom must wait two weeks before resubmitting. However, you could ask Graham Colm for an exception, he is quite reasonable and might allow you to re-nom early. Also, regarding the "canvassing" for support: while you can ping past reviewers, remember to be sure your wording is neutral, or this could be an issue with some (I learned this one the hard way). WikiCup 2013 February newsletter

Round 1 is now over. The top 64 scorers have progressed to round 2, where they have been randomly split into eight pools of eight. At the end of April, the top two from each pool, as well as the 16 highest scorers from those remaining, will progress to round 3. Commiserations to those eliminated; if you're interested in still being involved in the WikiCup, able and willing reviewers will always be needed, and if you're interested in getting involved with other collaborative projects, take a look at the WikiWomen's Month discussed below.

Round 1 saw 21 competitors with over 100 points, which is fantastic; that suggests that this year's competition is going to be highly competative. Our lower scores indicate this, too: A score of 19 was required to reach round 2, which was significantly higher than the 11 points required in 2012 and 8 points required in 2011. The score needed to reach round 3 will be higher, and may depend on pool groupings. In 2011, 41 points secured a round 3 place, while in 2012, 65 was needed. Our top three scorers in round 1 were:

1. Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), primarily for an array of warship GAs.
2. Miyagawa (submissions), primarily for an array of did you knows and good articles, some of which were awarded bonus points.
3. Casliber (submissions), due in no small part to Canis Minor, a featured article awarded a total of 340 points. A joint submission with Keilana (submissions), this is the highest scoring single article yet submitted in this year's competition.

Other contributors of note include:

• Sven Manguard (submissions), whose Portal:Massachusetts is the first featured portal this year. The featured portal process is one of the less well-known featured processes, and featured portals have traditionally had little impact on WikiCup scores.
• Sasata (submissions), whose Mycena aurantiomarginata was the first featured article this year.
• Muboshgu (submissions) and Wizardman (submissions), who both claimed points for articles in the Major League Baseball tie-breakers topic, the first topic points in the competition.
• Toa Nidhiki05 (submissions), who claimed for the first full good topic with the Casting Crowns studio albums topic.

Featured topics have still played no part in this year's competition, but once again, a curious contribution has been offered by The C of E (submissions): did you know that there is a Shit Brook in Shropshire? With April Fools' Day during the next round, there will probably be a good chance of more unusual articles...

March sees the WikiWomen's History Month, a series of collaborative efforts to aid the women's history WikiProject to coincide with Women's History Month and International Women's Day. A number of WikiCup participants have already started to take part. The project has a to-do list of articles needing work on the topic of women's history. Those interested in helping out with the project can find articles in need of attention there, or, alternatively, add articles to the list. Those interested in collaborating on articles on women's history are also welcome to use the WikiCup talk page to find others willing to lend a helping hand. Another collaboration currently running is an an effort from WikiCup participants to coordinate a number of Easter-themed did you know articles. Contributions are welcome!

Good luck! My first FAC (The Wiggles) was hellish; it took five times to pass! Part of the reason for that was my relative inexperience with writing articles and with the FAC process. You're way ahead of me; you know the process you should undertake before submitting an article to FAC, and you've gotten lots of help thus far. Just be willing to follow the reviewers' suggestions, and be open to their constructive criticism and feedback. Understand that they're there to help you, no matter how ridiculous and arbitrary they seem. Sometimes I feel like FAC is a series of hoops to jump through, and that some reviewers have you jump through them just for the heck of it. Also, if you feel strongly about something, stand up for it. I've learned that most reviewers will accept a well-reasoned and sound argument. Remember, you're the expert about this article, and most reviewers respect that. Since I've contributed to this article, I can't support it, but I can go over there and say that it's come a long way since I reviewed it for GAC, which it has. Thanks for the comments! The article really has come a long way. This was my first edit on MF and as you can see, it is almost completely changed compared to what it is today. I've been reviewing and writing FLC lately so I do have a good understanding on the headaches they can give you sometimes! I have plenty of GAs but I've always been worried about roller coaster articles at FAC because of the lack of reliable references in most instances. It just couldn't get enough support. People were truly afraid of this article, and said that it was "too technical". Even though it was frustrating at times, it's kinda hilarious because it's about Sesame Street, for God's sake! I realized, though, that calling this article "technical" is a compliment; one of my goals is to have high-quality, academic-like articles about The Show, and I believe this fulfills that goal. Reliable Sources For Featured Articles

Hello, always working closly with Astros4477, I have been following his FAC nomination of Millennium Force. Quoting the comment you made about the most reliable sources available, "I'd like to respond to this, if I may. I can't support or oppose this article because I reviewed it for GAC..." (don't want to copy and paste the entire thing as it is long), I have a question regarding an article (SheiKra) that I am working on for FAC (will nominate it as soon as it gets a copyedit). For the construction of the SheiKra, after a month of searching through newspapers for any construction reports, it appears that no newspapers every followed the construction of the roller coaster. However, there is one website that did, johnnyupsidedown.com. Would this website be accepted for a Featured Article?--Dom497 (talk) 15:02, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

Dom, your link seems to be broken. Is the johnnyupsidedown site a fan or industry site? Taking a preliminary view at the ShiKra article, it looks like you, like Astros4477 did for the MF article, already include industry sites. The answer, without looking at the site about the coaster, is that if it's the best and only source you can find to support your claim, you should use it. If you make a good faith effort to find the best and most reliable sources, the reviewers at FAC should accept it. As I said in the MF FAC, I think that depending on the article, there are times that comprehensiveness trumps reliability. You just have to make a good case for it.
