Thanks WikiAviator. I did the "Wikipedia Adventure". I've edited Wikipedia without a registered account before, but the adventure taught me a few things I didn't know. Eostrix (talk) 10:24, 15 October 2019 (UTC)

Necticles

Given the edits to Aussie, suggesting they're in Australia, where it would have been 8 in the evening on New Years Eve, and the obsession with necticles (probably because it sounds like testicles) it looks like two little kids who've been given tablets and parked in a quiet corner to keep them amused and out of the way 'til midnight. WP:ILLEGIT wasn't written with this situation in mind. On the bright side, they seem to have kids' attention spans and have moved on already. Happy New Year, Cabayi (talk) 09:37, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

No worries, either we'll see them again or not, not a biggie for this to slide if they just vanish or by some chance become productive editors. Eostrix (talk) 09:41, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

Ezra Lavent

Hey, why was the change I made reversed. I could give links to videos by Ezra Lavent where he asks people to donate money to pay for his flights to the UK

You need a good source calling him that label. A reputable mainstream media source or a book or something. You provided none.Eostrix (talk) 17:22, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

How about these https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlMYAKdTflw at 12:50 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=venjsrPDCgw at 6:30 Plane and cab, underground not good enough? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZoMfMbIYnVg 7 mins As you can see in each one the man himself asks for money to fund his holidays to the UK. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.28.103.25 (talk) 17:30, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

Not good enough as a source. If you want to call him an "eBegger", you will need to find a source like the BBC, NBC, or Wall Street Journal calling him that - and that could be the beginning of a discussion. Eostrix (talk) 17:33, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

User: NormanGear persistently disruptive conduct

Dear Eostrix,

Thank you for reverting User:NormanGear on the Spaniards page. This user has been trying to add the Moorish genetic contribution on Portuguese people equivalent page for the past couple of weeks. They reported me for harassment. Subsequently they revert every single edit I add to the Spaniards page, invoking repetition and saturation. Their intention is quite clear: Try to add Jewish/North African genetics to the Portuguese people and conversely make this as irrelevant as possible in the Spaniards/Spanish people equivalent. This is both unethical and incorrect as both nations have some genetic markers from both Jews and Berbers. If this is not an issue in the Portuguese people page, why is this user making it so in the Spaniards page? I’ve reported them before and today again. They are not engaging on Talk either even though they suggested it. Many thanks for your intervention on this. It is very frustrating to have to face this kind of belligerent behaviour. Particularly as it is totally unreasonable. Melroross (talk) 18:48, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

I wasn't intending to take sides, but some of NormanGear's editing (the large scale insertion, then removals (6 consecutive edits) didn't seem right to me (on recent change patrol) as well as the removal of whole sections. I suggest you try a WP:RFC to settle this as edit-warring won't lead anywhere good. Eostrix (talk) 06:19, 1 January 2020 (UTC)

Roger Ailes

Roger Ailes is a sexual predator and it's a proven fact in lawsuits. 49.207.56.149 (talk) 15:49, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

The sexual harassment case is properly described in the second sentence of the lead: "He was the chairman and CEO of Fox News and Fox Television Stations, from which he was fired in July of 2016 for engaging in multiple sexual harassment cases with 23 known victims". I reverted [2], since using the label in the short description and first sentence is a bit too much. Eostrix (talk) 15:52, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

Comments!

Did you see those childish comments left by BoogalooParty88? I've left a warning on his talk page, for all the good it will probably do. WQUlrich (talk) 07:34, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

You are right, he does come across as aggressive, . But at least he is reverting vandalism. He needs to read WP:DENY, I think, on how to deal with trolls. It is odd the new List of richest people in the world is such a vandal magnet, seeing all the vandalism on that real-time list prompted me to vote in the AFD.--Eostrix (talk) 07:39, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for giving him that link. His contribution list is full of similar (and worse) comments. How did he get to the Articles for Review list? Isn't that limited to people who are reviewers? WQUlrich (talk) 07:44, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
Recent changes is on the sidebar on the left (in Desktop mode), it is pretty visible.--Eostrix (talk) 07:45, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
Oh duh. As long as I've been editing, I've never looked at that. All I've seen is the Articles for Review. I'm surprised that list hasn't created some really serious problems. (And how do you even begin to keep up with it?) WQUlrich (talk) 07:59, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
Keeping up, well, there are filters. But monitoring recent changes you aren't remotely even trying to get every change. You're trying to catch some percentage of the bad changes, and followup on users/IPs contribution elsewhere as if they vandalized one article, they might do another. Sometime you just see a random article update that interests you and you jump in and help improve or add stuff. It is all collaborative, you assume other RCP editors will get the ones you don't. And the collective works, the amount of edit conflicts you get attempting to roll back clear vandalism is pretty high.--Eostrix (talk) 08:16, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
Still sounds like quite an effort. Good luck! I think I'll stick with the short list. WQUlrich (talk) 08:38, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

February 2020

Hello. Regarding the recent revert you made: you may already know about them, but you might find Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace useful. After a revert, these can be placed on the user's talk page to let them know you considered their edit inappropriate, and also direct new users towards the sandbox. They can also be used to give a stern warning to a vandal when they've been previously warned. Thank you. TFFfan (talk) 11:46, 11 February 2020 (UTC)

@TFFfan: which revert in particular? I hand out warning messages on disruptive edits regularly. In cases I do not hand out a warning message I am usually WP:AGF in regards to the contributor (even though the contribution may be sub-optimal or not constructive).--Eostrix (talk) 11:50, 11 February 2020 (UTC)
If this is Accord, New York, I think the IP was possibly acting in good faith and possibly even right. I thought the IP framed it badly, too opinionated and overly long for the lead. I myself do not have grounds to contest (let alone revert with a minor edit summary) as you did: [3], as I do not have a source with the pronunciation of the town.--Eostrix (talk) 11:56, 11 February 2020 (UTC)

About French Guiana

I did not add any vandalism. Some other user (199.243.127.18) did. I reverted it but he edited it at the same time and some of his changes ended up on my own revision. Sorry that happened. 79.158.146.211 (talk) 14:55, 25 February 2020 (UTC)

I was triggered by this revert of yours.--Eostrix (talk) 14:57, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, I know, it slipped through. The guy editing the article is still vandalizing it, though :/
You reverted yourself. OK - I see 199.243.127.18 is the locus of this.--Eostrix (talk) 15:01, 25 February 2020 (UTC)

Thank you!

If you haven't already, that type of username violation should also be reported to oversight so it can be reviewed and removed from the logs if necessary. I reported it just in case.

Thank you for catching that one! Much appreciated.

EvergreenFir (talk) 17:40, 4 March 2020 (UTC)

I have not sent an email to oversight, thank you for doing that. I will on the next one of this sort. Was I correct to report them to AIV or should I have done just oversight?--Eostrix (talk) 17:43, 4 March 2020 (UTC)
Honestly, just oversight in the future as there are less places to remove that username from. But AIV is a good second choice. For cases where the user is spamming/fast editing, AIV + oversight might be better for fastest response. More borderline cases (e.g., Celebrity_Name_is_a_dumbass) where it's just insulting but not libelous can just go to AIV usually. EvergreenFir (talk) 17:47, 4 March 2020 (UTC)

New page reviewer granted

Hi Eostrix. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group. Please check back at WP:PERM in case your user right is time limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page. In addition, please remember:

  • Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
  • If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page. Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. signed, Rosguill talk 00:12, 11 May 2020 (UTC)

Maria Stuart

Dear Eostrix,

Thank you for your help.

Moreover, I'm not used with the English disambiguation page. So I fear to have failed to create a successful one in order to lead to the right biography page for people who tried to type only the tittle: Maria Stuart.

I've tried to create the one: Maria Stuart (disambiguation). But it need to be completed. Would you be so kind to help me in completing it. Sorry for my not clear English ;-((

Best wishes. - Alter005 [ --> talk] 13:40, 9 June 2020 (UTC)

I am not sure a disambig page is needed from the German name. I think I shall leave the disambig page to someone else to review.--Eostrix (talk) 13:43, 9 June 2020 (UTC)

About Person is famous

Hello User:Eostrix can I ask you if this person has a notability to has a page in this wiki, He is well-known and he has 2 books in amazon and kobo store And yeniakit newspaper one of the famous newspaper in turkey talked about him also When you search for his name on Google " ali al suleiman kimdir hayati " you will see Featured Snippets information about him appear on the first page https://www.yeniakit.com.tr/haber/ali-al-suleiman-kimdir-1281918.html https://www.thefamousbirthdays.com/people/ali-al-suleiman https://www.arageek.com/bio/ali-al-suleiman https://www.timeturk.com/ali-al-suleiman-kimdir/haber-1510243 https://www.agridahaber.com/biyografi/gazeteci-yazar-ali-al-suleiman-kimdir-h108080.html https://www.agrisoz.com/ali-al-suleiman-kimdir-73585h.htm https://www.biyografya.com/biyografi/23516 https://aliqtisadi.com/شخصيات/علي-السليمان/ https://www.imdb.com/name/nm11203196/ --Alex bonson90 (talk) 07:49, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

@Alex bonson90:, probably not, but possibly yes. Most 24 year old translators/journalists with some social media following are not notable, but some may be. It is plausible that there are enough in-depth reliable sources on him making him notable, but this requires an assessment of the source material which is probably mostly in Arabic and Turkish, and I'm not the best in those languages. To summarize, I think it is borderline. I wouldn't CSD it if I were reviewing, but it very possibly wouldn't survive AfD and I would possibly AfD it. IMDB and thefamousbirthdays are not sources that establish notability, I think. The rest I am unsure of.--Eostrix (talk) 08:01, 15 June 2020 (UTC)
You might want to ask at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Turkey and/or Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Syria, people there will be more familiar with the language, sources, and possibly the person.--Eostrix (talk) 08:04, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer newsletter June 2020

Hello Eostrix,

Your help can make a difference

NPP Sorting can be a great way to find pages needing new page patrolling that match your strengths and interests. Using ORES, it divides articles into topics such as Literature or Chemistry and on Geography. Take a look and see if you can find time to patrol a couple pages a day. With over 10,000 pages in the queue, the highest it's been since ACPERM, your help could really make a difference.

Google Adds New Languages to Google Translate

In late February, Google added 5 new languages to Google Translate: Kinyarwanda, Odia (Oriya), Tatar, Turkmen and Uyghur. This expands our ability to find and evaluate sources in those languages.

Discussions and Resources
  • A discussion on handling new article creation by paid editors is ongoing at the Village Pump.
  • Also at the Village Pump is a discussion about limiting participation at Articles for Deletion discussion.
  • A proposed new speedy deletion criteria for certain kinds of redirects ended with no consensus.
  • Also ending with no change was a proposal to change how we handle certain kinds of vector images.

I have unreviewed a page you curated

Hi, I'm Dibbydib. I wanted to let you know that I saw the page you reviewed, DESelect, and have marked it as unpatrolled. If you have any questions, please ask them on my talk page. Thank you.

(Message delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.)

dibbydib 10:51, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Hey User:Dibbydib, I sent the page to AfD, once sent to AfD the patrol tool marks the page automatically as patrolled, probably since if it survives AfD (not likely in this particular case) then it will have undergone under the hands of more editors than a lone patrol member. In short, while I do not object to this page being un-patrolled I do not think this is needed once at AfD.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉]) 10:54, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Seems like i put up an article at Afd the same time you tagged it for CSD, KH Records, should i remove the Afd tag, then.Megan Barris (Lets talk📧) 08:18, 2 July 2020 (UTC)

@Synoman Barris: looks like we were doing things in parallel, when I speedied it I didn't see your tags but when I saved it went in a moment after your tags, and your afd went in a moment after the CSD :). I think you should leave the AfD in place. If the speedy is declined, then the AfD will run. @Field Marshal Aryan: I would've given him another chance prior to reporting to AIV (as your two warning are very close to one another, and Q-WKPA is trying to construct some content, all be it maybe misguided), however I tend to agree with your ultimate conclusion.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 11:06, 13 July 2020 (UTC)

Deletion of Vyacheslav Zvizhinskiy

Hi Eostrix, Kindly remove the deletion message from my talk page. I am not the creator of the article. You must notify the real creator of the article. DMySon 10:25, 22 July 2020 (UTC)

@DMySon:. Done. My apologies. What happened is that I had Twinkle open while you (correctly) moved the article. This ended up notifying you (because of the redirect you were the creator of). I then went around correcting the title issue at the AfD (which was at the all-caps name) and notifying the original article creator. While notifying the original article creator, by copy pasting what I placed on your page, I managed to bungle up again and undo my reversion of the notice (I changed from all-caps to the new title, but I saved this on your page instead of their page). Twinkle gets a bit funny when things happen in parallel (I had an issue the other day with a CSD that I opened prior to admin speedy-deleting it but clicked the Twinkle button seconds after - which ended up creating a new article with a CSD tag), and I messed up here as well (and Twinkle edits are my responsibility as well). --Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 10:30, 22 July 2020 (UTC)
Thank You Eostrix, I also added my vote 'Speedy Delete'. DMySon 10:33, 22 July 2020 (UTC)

Redirect of Ruth Colian

Hi Eostrix, I understand a lot of the text written by me in the new article is also relevant to the political party itself, but i think Ruth Culian is relevant enough as a pioneer in her field. She does have a Hebrew page about her, and i believe the information on it is relevant to communities living outside of the land of Israel, so the page could have some value. And it is well sourced. Thank you for any help you can offer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by PeterSallerzi (talkcontribs) 09:26, 28 July 2020 (UTC)

@PeterSallerzi:, can you show that she meets WP:POLITICIAN or Wikipedia:Notability (people) more broadly? --Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 10:39, 28 July 2020 (UTC)
Well she has 126 search results under "News" - (don't know if it's enough by your standards) and her case in the Israeli supreme court against a religious newspaper that refused to run her ads is important enough, though she lost. I think she's important because very few orthodox women have done what she has done to better the lives of orthodox Jewish women. Once she stepped down, there was no political party. Thanks for your help and good will :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by PeterSallerzi (talkcontribs) 13:51, 28 July 2020 (UTC)
@PeterSallerzi:, the problem is that political candidates always generate PR and this gets covered in the news. If you have strong news sources about her, and stress aspects that are unique to her (as opposed to the party), I am not strongly opposed here. Just be certain to have sources to match Wikipedia:Notability (people). As far as I can tell, with the exception of one 2014 source, the sources you put in the article were primarily about the party not about Colian herself.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 14:06, 28 July 2020 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Marvelous (rapper)

Hello Eostrix. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Marvelous (rapper), a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: coverage in Hip Hop Weekly and The Source might be sufficient, take it to WP:AFD instead. Thank you. SoWhy 16:09, 24 August 2020 (UTC)

PR/self-written, ending with: "Get the latest on Marvelous on Instagram, Youtube, and Twitter ( @ImMrMarvel )" and "To keep up with Marvelous follow him on Instagram, YouTube, and Twitter at (@ImmrMarvel ).". This does not in my mind rise to an indication of significance.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 07:45, 25 August 2020 (UTC)

Hello, Eostrix. Your account has been granted the "extendedmover" user right, either following a request for it or demonstrating familiarity with working with article names and moving pages. You are now able to rename pages without leaving behind a redirect, move subpages when moving the parent page(s), and move category pages.

Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Page mover for more information on this user right, especially the criteria for moving pages without leaving redirect. Please remember to follow post-move cleanup procedures and make link corrections where necessary, including broken double-redirects when suppressredirect is used. This can be done using Special:WhatLinksHere. It is also very important that no one else be allowed to access your account, so you should consider taking a few moments to secure your password. Regarding AfD discussion

Hello, regarding Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Georges_Sada#Georges_Sada, one of the serious problems mentioned is that there is no reliable or independent source of Sada being a flag officer. It comes from him, and that's also something several users have brought up in Talk discussions. Also, this fails WP:MILPERSON because "have received significant coverage in multiple verifiable independent, reliable sources." is not met. Thanks! Saucysalsa30 (talk) 15:50, 8 October 2020 (UTC)

I replied at the AfD with sources.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 16:04, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
User:Eostrix Hello, I would advise reading the Opening Post of the AfD, the article Talk page, and the criteria for WP:BIO and WP:MILPERSON. An "independent" source simply relaying what Sada said about himself in a book is not verifiable or reliable, and it is not significant coverage either. It's a passing trivial mention. It is still unreliable primary sourcing as well, since it is what Sada claims of himself. Thanks for understanding. Saucysalsa30 (talk) 16:20, 8 October 2020 (UTC)

New Page Patrol December Newsletter

Hello Eostrix,

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

Reviewer of the Year

John B123 has been named reviewer of the year for 2020. John has held the permission for just over 6 months and in that time has helped cut into the queue by reviewing more than 18,000 articles. His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.

NPP Technical Achievement Award

As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition.

Removing CSD tag

Hello, you recently removed the speedy tag from the talk page. In future, leave it on when the page has been tagged. --Ashleyyoursmile! 09:48, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

Sorry User:Ashleyyoursmile, that was inadvertent, I started blanking the spam talk page prior to you csd tagging it and for some reason the media wiki software doesn't edit conflict in this situation - so I did not see your tag when I was editing. That being said, G11 tags for user talk pages are often declined. To delete a user talk page you usually need something more significant, e.g. G12.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 10:06, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
G11 applies to all types of pages, at least I've never been declined when placed on talk pages. Thank you. Ashleyyoursmile! 10:08, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
User:Ashleyyoursmile, expect to have them declined on user talk, as they can be. In between reporting the user to UAA and blanking I was actually looking at it from a G12 standpoint - I almost tagged it for G12 - which is why it took me two minutes. You might want to take a look at this discussion over at Cabayi's talk on this very issue.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 10:13, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
Sorry but I don't agree with your reasoning. I can show you several examples from my deletion log for talk pages that have been tagged under G11 and have been deleted under such. Ashleyyoursmile! 10:36, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

Jamal Ismayilov

Hi. I noticed you played a speedy deletion tag (A7) on Jamal Ismayilov, seven minutes after it was created. It is considered best practice to wait at least 15 minutes (I frequently will wait at least a couple hours) before tagging. This gives the page's creator time to write enough of the article to show a credible claim of significance. If you have questions about this please don't hesitate to ask me on my talk page or by pinging me here. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 16:32, 18 February 2021 (UTC)

Barkeep49, that is codified for WP:A1 and WP:A3 (both state: " Don't tag under this criterion in the first few minutes after a new article is created"), but not for A7. If this is best practice, then updating the relevant policy may be due.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 16:55, 18 February 2021 (UTC)
@Barkeep49:, I noticed you also commented in a similar fashion at User:CommanderWaterford's talk. This isn't based on current policy as I read it, but I do see the sense in your suggestion (e.g. if an article "graduated" from WP:A1 or WP:A3 with a small bit of text that does not assert significance, then the " first few minutes after a new article is created" provision falling on a marginally better article doesn't make sense). However, I strongly suggest that instead of commenting on the talk page of taggers, that you post a suggestion to update the policy, copying the "few minutes" provision from A1 and A3 to A7 and A9. Also, current policy has a footnote of " ... though there is no set time requirement, a ten-minute delay before tagging ...". 10 could be changed to 15, but I think it is important to be consistent with policy. To summarise, I suggest a proposal at Wikipedia talk:Criteria for speedy deletion (adding the same blurb of A1/A3 to A7/A9), which I would support.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 17:58, 18 February 2021 (UTC)
You are correct it is not noted in the policy but it is noted as a best practice for New Page Patrollers which is how I first learned about it. I note it as more of a best practice - and indeed the practice of most people I see tagging - rather than something that needs to be codified in the policy. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 18:07, 18 February 2021 (UTC)
I posted at Wikipedia talk:Criteria for speedy deletion. I also think that the time in WP:NPPCSD should match policy, it is inconsistent for the project page to differ from policy. 15 might be better than 10, but if it is better then it should be at both places.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 18:18, 18 February 2021 (UTC)

Christoph Wulf

Eostrix, if you don't have it watchlisted, perhaps you would like to glance at Christoph Wulf, which you stubbed down when it was at AfD, and look at the expansion by an IP user. (I reverted a recent expansion that had no references whatsoever; this one is somewhat better at least in that respect.) Russ Woodroofe (talk) 07:30, 29 March 2021 (UTC)

@Russ Woodroofe: its the same IP (around Hamburg, same ISP). I am not sure what is appropriate here, I do suspect COI, but unlike the version I redacted (this which was a copied translation of www.christophwulf.de) it is not a clear copyvio (this pdf does have some shared content, but I don't think enough). I suggest maybe discussing COI with the IP directly, and if not cooperative then maybe Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard? Some expansion of the article is due, it doesn't appear to be all bad.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 07:44, 29 March 2021 (UTC)

Saifullah Nuaxi

Hi just wondering why you unpatrolled this (I see it’s been patrolled again since). Thanks. Mccapra (talk) 07:59, 30 March 2021 (UTC)

@Mccapra:, you mean Saifullah Niazi? This was a misclick or a click on an old page version. I was reviewing this in parallel to you (I created Talk:Saifullah Niazi at 07:28 and did some page edits, a moment prior to your tick at 07:29). I overlooked that it was ticked in the mean time and either re-clicked the green mark on the curation bar on the right (which when I started) or clicked on an old version of the page. I re-ticked at 07:32 (log) with an un-categorized tag (which has been fixed since). In short, I agree with your assessment of the article, and apologize for the temporary un-patrol.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 08:12, 30 March 2021 (UTC)
Ah ok thanks. Sorry for the fat fingered spelling here. I wondered if you’d spotted some issue of concern in the article that I’d overlooked. All the best. Mccapra (talk) 08:17, 30 March 2021 (UTC)
No issue in the slightest. Combination of the page curation with the tick mark working as a toggle (UI) coupled with my inattentiveness to the tick change.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 08:19, 30 March 2021 (UTC)

Thanks

Hi Eostrix, I just wanted to say thank you for this edit. I'm not sure how I missed out after reporting them to the UAA but thanks for noticing and tagging the page. :) --Ashleyyoursmile! 08:30, 31 March 2021 (UTC)

You're welcome, the more eyes on these the better. The criteria for CSD and UAA are different, and this can often be overlooked. I often have lots of tabs open, I report for UAA on the contribs usually and the CSD on the page, so I can often do one and not the other because I close lots of tabs with OK pages all of the time.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 08:45, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
Eostrix, no doubt about that. :) Ashleyyoursmile! 12:38, 31 March 2021 (UTC)

Can you make Orbisculate be a word in the wikipedia?

Hi! I just found out that the word orbisculate is not here as a word in wikipedia. Can you please make this into a word? If you search up orbisculate definition then it will show. here is the link for the draft i made be turned into a word! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Orbisculate Thanks! --DANKlNG (talk) 00:34, 9 April 2021 (UTC)

@DANKlNG:, looking at sources here: [4], [5], [6], [7] it's an interesting question on whether an article is merited. In terms of making a word "official", Wikipedia doesn't do that though out sister project Wiktionary is more in that line of business, and in terms of dictionary words it is more appropriate. I would think it is too soon to write on orbisculate as a social phenomena or meme as a standalone item, though I may be mistaken in that regard. It might be plausible to write about this in some other article that covers people promoting new words. Not sure. This isn't quite in my area of expertise.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 19:47, 9 April 2021 (UTC)

Deletion of article

Hello, you recently nominated my article on Folajimi Olubunmi-Adewole for deletion. I'm sorry if I shouldn't have created this. My aim was to commemorate someone who had recently passed but I understand if that isn't appropriate here. The article is now flagged with a big red DUE FOR DELETION AS NOT NOTABLE flag at the top which, if his family saw it would be horrible. I'm not contesting the deletion but is there a way to make this happen immediately? I feel terrible that I've waded in here and maybe made things worse. Mcc84mcc (talk) 17:43, 28 April 2021 (UTC)Mcc84mcc

User:Mcc84mcc, first of all you did nothing wrong, being bold in creating articles is the Wikipedia way. The article itself was complaint with policies and guidelines AFAICT, with the sole issue being notability (Wikipedia:Notability, Wikipedia:Notability (people)). As for the article, since you tagged it as G7, it should be deleted fairly shortly, the queue for G7 deletions is usually short.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 17:48, 28 April 2021 (UTC)

Hey I wish to move my userpage User:AppuSunkad to User:Appu.

But User:Appu was already there but inactive for 8 last years. Hence I tried moving User:Appu page to User:Appu1. I did. But yet I can't move my page to User:Appu. Is there any way you can help me?

UAA

There's a plausible case that

is the sockmaster of
which, if proven, would make your AFD G5-able. A UAA case for an account that's been unused for almost 7 years isn't the way to go. Cabayi (talk) 11:59, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
User:Cabayi, point taken on UAA (I G11ed some of the user pages, UAAed some of the users as I went through them). I am fairly certain some of them are the same (i.e. batches from the same year). I am less certain that the different waves in different years are the same. Synamatics appears to be a UPE (as they also edited Synamatics company stuff). I am less certain that inter-year waves (and specifically the newest account, Afbell) are straight up sockpuppets. I can't see the deleted contributions, so if the pages are substantially the same they could be, but that's not available to me. My hunch is that this is UPE on behalf of the organization, possibly via different paid editors.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 12:08, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
I wouldn't stress myself unduly trying to separate WP:SOCK from WP:MEAT, especially when the MEAT is UPE. They tied themselves to DoctorsAcademy1's record (and that of his previous puppets) the moment they took the gig. Cabayi (talk) 12:24, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
Well, they are declared now ([8], all be it in wrong place). If different paid editors, at different times, on account of the same organization count as meatpuppetry for SPI then I shall report as it will help the next time this is created.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 12:27, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

Your strange comments about me

Hi Eostrix, some comments on what you say on a Sockpuppet investigation I have asked:

  • Even I read frwiki and even I know frwiki, I have no obligation to edit on frwiki for editing on English enwiki.
  • May I remind you that each Wiki is independent.
  • I’m surprised your concerns (wih any evidence) about the fact that I could be a sockpuppet (of who?). I remind you : "Do not make accusations without providing evidence. Doing so is a personal attack". So please stop this kind of vague accusations against me.
  • Last : you seem to find extenuating circumstances to the WP:SPA LouisianaDavis when it’s proven that LouisianaDavis is a sockpuppet of Caux9 [9]...

Regard, --Belyny (talk) 20:05, 20 June 2021 (UTC)

Belyny, please stop tagging me : this is boring. I could end up reporting you for psychological harassment. LouisianaDavis (talk) 20:07, 20 June 2021 (UTC)
User:Belyny, please read WP:SPA a category you meet. Pointing out that a new SPA account has both great knowledge of English Wikipedia policy and of a dispute on the French Wikipedia is evidence.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 05:15, 21 June 2021 (UTC)

Must have mixed it up for user talk. I make this error both ways at 1%-2% maybe, the distinction between the two being that I generally speedy tag the user page and for user talk I usually blank (unless it is G12 or G10).--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 06:13, 30 June 2021 (UTC)

Redirect Salem Suhail bin Khamis

You redirected one of the most important people in the UAE's history, Salem Suhail bin Khamis, to Seizure of Abu Musa and the Greater and Lesser Tunbsclaiming he isn't notable. Regarded as a national hero, he was the first martyr of the UAE after refusing to put down his flag from the disputed island. He even has his own day here to honor him!!!!

@Prodrummer619: yes, I did. I don't believe he is independently notable. He was a low ranking policeman and is regarded as the first Emirati martyr, which is linked to the date of Commemoration Day. The details of the incident are covered in Seizure of Abu Musa and the Greater and Lesser Tunbs. Commemoration Day could be an alternate redirection target.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 06:17, 30 June 2021 (UTC)

Étienne de Perier

Hi Eostrix, Do you have any interest in weighing back in on the Étienne de Perier article? I've been working on a full rewrite and it could benefit from having some more voices in the discussion. Everything's been rewritten and updated on the main article, except for his time as governor. That section is in progress at Talk:Étienne de Perier/Temp. —Carter (talk) 18:47, 29 June 2021 (UTC)

Carter, I might weight in on proposals, but I am out of my depth discussing French language sources.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 05:05, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
Anything you feel comfortable weighing in on would be great, particularly around WP:MOS and encyclopedic style/content. I think (hope) we're done with the back and forth over French-language sources and we're back to the question you started discussing about appropriate section head titles. Thanks! —Carter (talk) 14:33, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
Commented over at the temp page. Discussing titles I am comfortable with.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 14:42, 30 June 2021 (UTC)

Hello, will the article that I created survive if I add more info and organize it ? Historyandsciencelearn (talk) 11:31, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

@Historyandsciencelearn: if you demonstrate significant coverage in reliable sources, then yes it would survive AfD. In my assessment significant coverage does not exist, which is why I sent this to AfD. However, I may be proven wrong.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 12:04, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

What if I am granted permition to provide photos of one of the UAV's. I'm part of the developent program. Will it be accepted ? And notice how I did not even mention effectiveness because I would not be a neutral writer. Thanks for being open to talk. Historyandsciencelearn (talk) 12:10, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

@Historyandsciencelearn: photos are nearly always welcome at Wikimedia Commons and can be used here even if there is no specific article yet (e.g. on Greek military aviation industry). However, you yourself taking an picture would not demonstrate notability. What's most relevant for notability, is in-depth coverage in multiple reliable sources.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 12:14, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

Okay, I understand. I will ask to be given some of the existing advertisement photos and I will try to find a high tier source. Thanks again, you very helpful in the contrary to other editors. Historyandsciencelearn (talk) 12:17, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Todd Kashdan

Hi. I'm obviously not complaining about the outcome, since I withdrew it, but for future reference it's really not appropriate to close a discussion that you participated in. Even if it's unanimous. Even if it's withdrawn. I know it won't make any difference in the outcome, but it's just not how things should be done. -- RoySmith (talk) 13:05, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

@RoySmith: certainly would have been wrong for a normal close (e.g. a snow keep), but for a nominator withdrawal (and no other votes against) this is entirely procedural. See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion#Withdrawing a nomination that says the nominator himself (in this case YOU) may

If no one has supported deletion of the article you may close the discussion yourself as a WP:Speedy keep

and there is a specific procedure at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion#Procedure for non-administrator close (nominator withdrawal) spelling this out.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 13:13, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
I'm aware of that, but it's best practice to avoid even the appearance of being WP:INVOLVED. As I said, in this particular case, nobody could ever raise an objection to the ultimate outcome, but it's still better to just leave it and let somebody else do it. See WP:NACINV. -- RoySmith (talk) 13:27, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

How do I Add a biography?

I have researched and written an article on Pratt C. Remmel. He was the Mayor of Little Rock and the 1954 Republican nominee for Governor of Arkansas. I want to to start updating who, what, when, where for my current state. Also, what's the easiest way to add their pictures if it's one allowed to be used? Thank you! Acpritt (talk) 07:23, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

@Acpritt:, you might want to look at Template:Biography and other biographies of mayors at List of mayors of Little Rock, Arkansas. I am not sure that the mayor of Little Rock passes WP:POLITICIAN, though he might as this is a significant city in the state. For pictures, look at Commons:First steps/Uploading files and the UploadWizard.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 09:39, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

@Eostrix, thank you. The reason why is he was more than just a Mayor of Little Rock. He was the first serious Republican nominee for Governor of Arkansas since Reconstruction in Arkansas. He also helped build up the Arkansas Republican Party and laid the groundwork with Winthrop Rockefeller (who was later Governor) in making this a two-party state. Would you agree that's reason enough to add a biography? He also was a decorated war hero. Acpritt (talk) 05:04, 15 July 2021 (UTC)

@Acpritt: I would be careful with the candidate argument, as per WP:NPOL failed candidates are generally seen as not notable. I suspect that being mayor of Little Rock and a major state political figure would be enough, however to establish notability what you really need is WP:SIGCOV for instance by showing three good sources (reliable, independent, and in-depth coverage, preferably from different years - showing sustained coverage). Good luck with the article, it sounds like an interesting figure.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 05:34, 15 July 2021 (UTC)

@Eostrix thank you for the advice and guidance. Sometimes, I think we are going too extreme on failed candidates, sometimes. I mean look at Harold Stassen. He failed way more than won but was notable. Or John Jay Hooker, who NEVER won. But I do see both sides. I like the fact we all strive for balance. Still I plan to work really hard on this. I have striven to make Wikipedia better and better. Thank you once more for the guidance and advice!Acpritt (talk) 07:25, 15 July 2021 (UTC)

G5

Howdy. Regarding Category:Prix Versailles-winning sports facilities, I am pretty sure that G5 only applies to page creations "in violation of the user's block". None of their pages that you have G5'd were created while they were blocked. I agree that we should get rid of their promotional junk, but I don't think G5 will work. --- Possibly 20:55, 24 July 2021 (UTC)

CSD G5 applies to page creations by sockpuppets AFTER the sockpuppeteer has been blocked, so they are in violation of a block. That is not the case here. Also, you can't just tag categories for deletion, they must be emptied first but all of the contents will still be in the category even if you delete the category page. If you want to delete a category, you have to nominate it for deletion at CFD. Liz Read! Talk! 22:43, 24 July 2021 (UTC)
Eostrix, please review Criteria for Speedy Deletion before you do any more tagging of pages for speedy deletion so you understand the criteria better, what name-spaces they apply to and when they are warranted and when they aren't a valid option. You definitely shouldn't be seeking out pages to tag for deletion, just ones you come across when you are patrolling where the tag is appropriate. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 05:04, 25 July 2021 (UTC)
My CSD rate is pretty good overall, in my over 1,000 CSD nominations the acceptance rate is over 98%. In this particular case I made two errors. One, was the application to categories which is a topic I am admittedly less familiar with. The second was that I mistakenly thought that MARdF was already blocked previously, this was wrong. I have only recently started with tagging in this manner, I will take greater care to review in the future.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 05:39, 25 July 2021 (UTC)

Bradford West

Hey, just wondering what your reasons for reverting the changes to Bradford West done by the IP? --Gharbhain (talk) 08:48, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

Solely due to WP:DENY. The IP was blocked as a sock puppet (see Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Marquis de la Eirron for background).--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 08:54, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

Editing an article

Hello Eostrix, are the photos not suitable for these articles?, I took them from a company that is engaged in repairs and has extensive experience. https://smart69.ru/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Albogex (talkcontribs) 14:45, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

@Albogex: On English Wikipedia, my issue was the addition of links to https://smart69.ru which is a commercial business for transmission repair that I don't see a reason to link to. The photo themselves might be OK, but did you take them from the smart69.ru website as you say above, or did you take the photo yourself (in December 2020) as declared on Wikimedia Commons?--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 14:51, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

Eostrix, I work as a photographer and editor for transmission repair companies, including this company https://smart69.ru/. I missed out on commercial activity thank you for the reminder. If you want, I can add informational photos for an example. It's just that there are not enough good photos in the article,I wanted to be useful.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Albogex (talkcontribs) 15:03, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

@Albogex: In that case you have a Wikipedia:Conflict of interest, and should not be directly editing anything related to the company at all. You can post on the talk page with suggestions. You can upload photos to Commons if you comply with copyright. But you can't directly make conflict of interest edits to articles. I will post instructions for COI editing on your talk page as well.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 15:08, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

Thank you for the clarification.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Albogex (talkcontribs) 15:11, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

Removal of 'fanciful' images

Hello, I noticed you reverted a change by Pipsally on the article of Pope Mark. Over a year ago I asked a question about the deletion of such images on the Teahouse (Archive_1055), which ended rather inconclusive. Do you know if there was any recent discussion on this topic ? -- Kwakeroni (talk) 07:18, 14 August 2021 (UTC)

@Kwakeroni: no idea if the Wiki papal conclave emitted white smoke on this, I reverted solely since Pipsally was a sockpuppet, per WP:DENY.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 07:22, 14 August 2021 (UTC)
Ok, thanks for the clarification -- Kwakeroni (talk) 09:20, 15 August 2021 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for August 26

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Cécile Mourer-Chauviré, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Pica and Wired. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Another ConsumersDistributingonline puppet

Over at your sockpuppet investigation for ConsumersDistributingonline, I've added a new ip that I think serves as another puppet. I'm very unfamiliar with the sockpuppet investigation process, so if I've made a mistake in my comment would you mind showing me how to fix it? Thank you so much! RFZYNSPY talk 02:12, 7 September 2021 (UTC)

@RFZYNSPY:, these cross-wiki trolls can be annoying. The /41 was just globally blocked by Vituzzu, so hopefully this will resolve this. Generally English Wikipedia can only deal with English Wikipedia edits, edits on other projects needs to be dealt with on those projects. However, in cases in which there is cross-project or multiple-project abuse (such as this one), you can place a request at the Meta Wiki.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 07:26, 7 September 2021 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021

New Page Review queue September 2021

Hello Eostrix,

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

Eastmain (talkcontribs) 10:58, 22 September 2021 (UTC)

@Eastmain: this template is usually placed at the talk page of the article's creator. I did not create the article, though I did nominate the previous AfD.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 11:03, 22 September 2021 (UTC)

Iggy the Swan 21

Hi, thanks - glad you probably suspected that was not me who operated that impersonated account. I was wondering why I was mentioned by you on the Usernames for administrator attention page. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 13:51, 29 September 2021 (UTC)

@Iggy the Swan: I mentioned both to notify you (in case there is some other followup required for this account, e.g. other related accounts you are aware of) and so that the misleading username (impersonation) is clear to the blocking admin.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 13:54, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
The edit you'd made was removed when I was logged in so I had a look at the page history to find exactly what you've said on the page. Glad this has been tidied up. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 13:57, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
Yes, that is a "feature" of WP:UAA, reports are removed by bot (and tagged as reverted) once they are handled.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 13:59, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
