Peer Reviews edit

Happy New Year, Dystopos! It's been a while since we last contacted each other (at Talk:To Kill a Mockingbird), but I thought I could solicit your assistance. I've submitted two articles for peer review, and thought that you might be of some help in critiquing them:

  • Duck Soup. I've listed this article for peer review because, even though I and other editors have contributed much information and references, I'm certain that there are other aspects of this classic film that have yet to be covered. I'd like to hear feedback from you, so that I can get help in improving this (and other Marx Brothers films) quality.
  • Princess Leia Organa. I've listed this article for peer review because it right now seems oddly cluttered and, despite a lot of references as of now, lacks reliable source citations. Although I've already requested another peer review, as long as it helps the articles get better, I've got the time. Any helpful comments will certainly be appreciated, as this should help me in expanding other Star Wars-centric articles.

I'd appreciate your suggestions and feedback. Thanks. — Cinemaniac (talkcontribs) 18:53, 3 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Helen Keller photo edit

I don't think this photo is in the public domain. I've left notes on the photo page on commons and on the Helen Keller article here. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 05:13, 6 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • The term of 120 years from creation refers to works that have not already become part of the public domain before the Copyright Act of 1976. Since the photo was not published, it does seem unlikely to have become part of the public domain. Forgive my brazenness in assuming a work from 18-frickin'-88 might no longer be protected by copyright. --Dystopos (talk) 14:19, 6 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
    • Two people who know about previous (c) laws claim that even though it was not published, it in fact entered the public domain 100 years after creation under prior acts. If they are right, and I hope they are, I'm glad to be wrong. See User_talk:davidwr and Talk:Helen Keller. By the way, I made the same assumption you did initially, an assumption that may turn out to be correct. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 20:25, 6 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Saw this redirect which appears to be because one the four buildings is called the empire building, but it does not have an article of its own. It appears theres a NRHP building in NYC with the name Empire Building (no, not the Empire State Building) which means at some point soon, there will be an article for it, which suggests this page will become a dab.

In the meantime, were you planning on expanding this article with details about the Alabama Empire building?

Hey. As you provided an outside opinion during the discussion on ITT Technical Institute a couple weeks ago, I decided to come here for help. Basically, User:Veecort has returned to his original position of determination to include every single critical article he can find to the "Criticism" section of the article. I removed a few, got an odd message on my talk page, and thought it would be more prudent to ask the opinion of others than to argue one on one. Any chance you can have a look at what the article's like in its current state? McJeff (talk) 13:31, 7 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Andy Andrews edit

I saw your opinion that I should have not marked an article and fixed it myself. I understand your opinion; however, not all of us have time to accomplish everything right away. I sometimes mark article that needs action so I might go back and make those changes at a later time. In addition, it might spark someone else, who may have more time, to make the fix before I can. So your comment that it is not in the sprint of Wikipedia, if you look at it from only one side may be valid; however, if you approach it from another (that Wikipedia credibility rests on the accuracy and completeness)it may make sense. It could also be argued that no one is expected to fix all the article issues one finds, hence Wikipedia created the nag tags.8-)

If you are miffed that I reversed your tag removal, you have my apologies. At any rate, enjoy the day/evening. ttonyb1 (talk) 23:56, 9 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Venting is always good. 8-)
Thanks sharing your thoughts and I completely understand your feelings. Actually, I somewhat agree with the majority of your comments, alright maybe 99.9%. I see what you mean about feeling as if you are "...being told to fix the article." It may be construed by some as adding hierarchy, but it is not my intent. Like I said, they are as much for me as others. I will probably be more cautious about setting tags for minor problems. OK, I'll at least try. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and may I say it is always a pleasure having an intelligent exchange of ideas. My best to you. ttonyb1 (talk) 04:22, 10 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Tulane edit

Hi, there! This might sound odd, but since you've already been in contact with Tulane to get File:Tulane_shield_web.png, could you do something similar for File:Tulaneseal.png? There's a discussion about its use at Talk:Tulane University/Archives/2012#Logo vs. Seal but some of the reasoning is beyond me and my latest concerns haven't been addressed. I definitely feel as though the article is lacking without the seal, especially when Template:Infobox University has a separate place for the logo and just about every featured article at WP:UNI utilises the institutional seal. Let me know if there's anything you can do, or if you need anything more from me. Thanks for your time, and I hope I'm not a bother! --King of the Arverni (talk) 04:06, 24 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi, again! Good question. I think it's still important to include the TU bit because Tulane does have a trademark on it per this and it's clearly marked on the shield logo (it's therefore a valid acronym no matter what the IP editor says -- it's pretty clear the individual has a big POV axe to grind and doesn't care about WP:RS). I mostly chose the other wording because it made using the "TU" bit easier. As in, try wording it with the TU when the official name is in parentheses and it doesn't quite work as well. And I think The College of William and Mary does it that way, but I don't have an issue with what goes in parentheses and what doesn't beyond what makes using "The Tulane University of Louisiana", "Tulane University", and "TU" all together easiest. That said, I'll leave it to you to re-add the acronym because I'm sure the IP editor would feel more comfortable with you doing it. :-) As for the seal, I still haven't gotten 'round to it. Not sure if I ever will, to be honest. But I wanted to thank you for your input on that, too. --King of the Arverni (talk) 20:39, 1 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Birmingham campaign, Lola Hendricks edit

Hi, and good to meet you. I read your comments on the Birmingham Campaign page involved in the James Bevel discussion, and your user page says you put attention on Birmingham data. There was an activist not much is written about on Wikipedia, Lola Hendricks, who was, I believe, the Secretary of Shuttlesworth's group and was active in the '63 effort. A friend and I stayed at her home in '88, at the 25th anniversary (2013 is coming up quickly for the 50th!), and she's since died, but she would be someone who is 'article worthy' if focused upon. Her daughter is probably still alive, and was one of the students in the Children's Crusade. Just an idea for a future page if there is either a Birmingham wikigroup or if we get the Civil Rights Movement wikigroup organized. Thanks, Randy Kryn (talk) 21:01, 13 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sad news about Audrey, I didn't remember her name but she was the daughter I met and interviewed along with Lola in '88. And you're fast with the articles. Can't help much on this one, but the people at the museum in Birmingham should have reference data on her, or some of the students who took part. Her death, the only word I had was I had asked someone there how Lola was, and they said she had died, this was a few years ago. Hope it's not true, but she was up there in age. Keep me informed, if you would. Thanks, Randy Kryn (talk) 11:47, 14 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Just clicked on your story, jeez, you're fast. What a good piece to whip together. I only glanced at it, and will go back. And your article reminded me that there is another article which badly needs writing for wiki, the group she and Shuttlesworth were members of (Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights, you mention it in your article.) That may be the only major Civil Rights Movement group which doesn't have a Wiki article as yet. That's one, along with Lola Hendricks, which should go onto the Template:African-American Civil Rights Movement. Thanks again, Randy Kryn (talk) 11:53, 14 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
And now read your wikipedia article on Hendricks. Very nice, and full of information I didn't know about her. It would be nice if she was still alive and could read it. I put a few edits in for you to look at, added and 'Early life' section, and put the template on (added your page to the template). Would you do the honor of creating the 'Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights' page, even as a stub for now. As mentioned, that might be the last major organization without a wikipedia article. Thanks again, and again, nice work. I'm still sorry about Audrey's death, and I forgot that she was in jail for so long. Randy Kryn (talk) 00:37, 15 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights edit

A start? It's turning into a very good article. Will get back to it tomorrow, I just saw it and Dexter and Curb Your Enthusiasm will gather my attention in about five minutes. But your article looks great, you even put in a picture of the badge! More tomorrow, Randy Kryn (talk) 01:55, 16 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Read it again, and learned many things I didn't know. Only a couple of suggestions, as I'm most conversant with the '63 campaign in reference to the article. Maybe, when the invite is mentioned, an SCLC co-founding credit can be given Shuttlesworth, King, and Abernathy, which, as I understand it, was the reason SCLC went to Birmingham. Shuttlesworth asked, and SCLC went because of the co-founding background. And in the strategy section, the Wyatt Walker mention, please consider adding the word "early" plans, as when those plans didn't work, and even King getting arrested didn't gain very many more demonstrators. Bevel then initiated and developed the "Children's Crusade", and his plan to march to Washington, which, when combined, gained the Birmingham success for the movement and for the nation's history and led directly to the Civil Rights Act. Glad you put Lola Hendricks into the article. You've expanded the history of the Birmingham Movement on Wikipedia considerably with the two pages, and possibly some of this data can be included in the main Birmingham Campaign article as well. I hope Shuttlesworth survives until the 50th anniversary, but either way his legacy will be present there. He really didn't like Abernathy after '63, an interesting side story that you touched on briefly. Thanks again, Randy Kryn (talk) 13:05, 16 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hi, and hope all is well. Do you have a timetable for when you're going to put the ACMHU page on Wikipedia? It seems in good shape, and your related article on their Declareation of Principles was very interesting and information new to me. Nice work, yet again. Randy Kryn (talk) 20:13, 19 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good. I had no idea the group may still be operating. Good luck with the further research, and hopefully some more interesting discoveries. Randy Kryn (talk) 00:20, 20 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, the new page looks good too, a person unknown to most not familiar with movement data. Will look further at the article this weekend. As a side topic, at a quick glance I realized I'd never looked at the A.D. King article on wikipedia, did so, and added his page to the template and the template to the page. His page gets quite a lot of hits everyday. Yes, something did happen between mainly Shuttlesworth and Abernathy, I don't know what but the movement didn't really last long after Birmingham, King, Bevel and the others wrapped up voting and open housing within three years (although it took a couple of years for the open housing laws to play out), then onto anti-war, and then it was over. Just learned Brad Pitt's production company is going to do a Selma movie, seems to be written already and pretty much set to go. Wonder if Angelina will have a role? Randy Kryn (talk) 14:05, 21 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Lee Daniels to direct, I didn't know that. Thanks. He's New York based while Pitt's production company is in the U.K. With the Spielberg film, the HBO series planned on Branch's work, and this Selma movie, the Civil Rights Movement seems to be having another go-around, with a younger generation working on portraying it, on the big and small screens. An important reason, seems to me, for Wikipedia to get it right. And yes, maybe Pitt and Jolie can pair up as "Mr. and Mrs. Wallace". Randy Kryn (talk) 22:00, 21 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
A very good article, thanks for letting me see its creation. Noticed you included the Declaration of Principles within it and not as a separate page, as well as leaving unlinked wiki links to Smith and Gardner to be, ah, linked in the near future. Nice work all around. I put in a few edits, please have a look, and it seems some of the data on these new pages and on Lola Hendricks can easily flow into the main Birmingham Campaign article. These pages really fill a hole in wikipedia coverage of the era. Randy Kryn (talk) 17:06, 22 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Personally I think that the Declarations are fine in the article, they define what the members of the organization thought and worked towards. And for the unlinked links, that's what I meant, every one of them is 'page worthy'. I told Moni3 about your new articles, her cat died and there's a wake going on on her talk page. Favre did it again today! Randy Kryn (talk) 20:54, 22 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Verifiability edit

Wikipedia's reliance on published sources isn't an "adage" that is "tossed about", but has become one of the core policies of the project

Uh huh.

...one cannot rely on the community of anonymous Wikipedians with their diversity of skills and motives to make good judgments for everybody without appeals to trusted authorities.

But yet...

Since a general consensus has built around the importance of verifiability...

A "consensus" of those same anonymous folks - or more specifically whatever relatively small handful decide to become involved. So-called "consensus" is formed by those that have time to kill on WP, to whom the various "merit badges" and pseudo-academic "positions" are actually psychologically fulfilling, and are able to rally enough who are like-minded. In the same vain "policy" only means whatever some particular clique' in some particular circumstance decide they want it to mean, resulting in ludicrous, capriciously random application. I've seen how it works on here, I've seen too many examples of utter 2+2=7 crap that passed the muster of "consensus" and "policy". Too many people who I seriously suspected of being escaped mental patients handing down decrees. The Borg-speak doesn't move me. There's a reason "the project" isn't taken seriously by academia at large. TheDarkOneLives (talk) 06:05, 17 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Alabama Sports Hall of Fame edit

A tag has been placed on Category:Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2009 February 10#Category:Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. Under the specified criteria, where an article has substantially identical content to that of an article deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 10:52, 23 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

The Wikipedia Ambassador Program is currently looking for Campus Ambassadors to help with Wikipedia assignments at Troy University, which will be participating in the Public Policy Initiative for the Spring 2011 semester. The role of Campus Ambassadors will be to provide face-to-face training and support for students on Wikipedia-related skills (how to edit articles, how to add references, etc.). This includes doing in-class presentations, running workshops and labs, possibly holding office hours, and in general providing in-person mentorship for students.

Prior Wikipedia skills are not required for the role, as training will be provided for all Campus Ambassadors (although, of course, being an experienced editor is a plus).

I know Alabama is a big state, but if you happen to live near Troy and you are interested in being a Wikipedia Campus Ambassador, or know someone else from Troy who might be, please email me or leave a message on my talk page.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 16:05, 6 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
