re: the health .. there's lots to tell ... but I won't do it on wiki. You're one of the few I trust .. so if you want I will fill you in. suffice to say that I miss the "red meat", and I'm working on embarrassing the fruits and veggies. DAMN I miss the bacon ... lol — Ched :  ?  05:48, 10 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • I know the feeling--I'm trying "will power" these days, and it's not easy. Speaking of bacon, I had a delicious BLT the other day, with sriracha mayonnaise and spinach. But a steak? I can't remember the last time. Don't get your panties wet, Mandarax--if I could I'd eat a New York Strip every day. Which brings us to our next reader poll. What can one not live without? And I mean in a kind of general sense, for eating and cooking and what not. I'll go first. Drmies (talk) 14:34, 10 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

    • For our anniversary dessert I had a root beer ice float, with Maker's Mark instead of root beer and bacon ice cream instead of vanilla ice. So, yeah buddy. Drmies (talk) 21:15, 10 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • My dad keeps telling me that one day I will have to switch to decaf and also stop eating shrimp, something about a genetic predisposition to high cholesterol and hypertension. Those are both basically impossible conditions for me to live under, especially the coffee. Beeblebrox (talk) 21:11, 10 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Shrimp have a crabby disposition. If you devein them, their blood pressure tends to drop. Tell your father there's no such thing as genetics. It says so somewhere on Wikipedia.--Bbb23 (talk) 21:19, 10 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Although I theoretically support veganism, I've gotta admit that, even before I saw the responses, the first thing I thought of was cheese. Of my three favorite cuisines (Chinese, Thai, and Indian, in no particular order), two don't really use cheese, but it's so important to me that it's the only food for which I feign ignorance about its origins. I know that most cheese isn't considered truly vegetarian because it contains rennet. (As you know, my beloved panir, from that third cuisine, is just milk and acid.)

I'll never understand baconmania. Even when I ate meat, I was never fond of bacon. For example, I preferred my BLTs made out of soaked and squeezed out Bacos®, which of course are vegetarian. Of all the common meat dishes around, I find the thought of eating steak to be especially disgusting and revolting. And, BTW, my panties are perfectly dry. Cheese. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 21:22, 10 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

    • The thought of steak might be disgusting, but actual steak is delicious. Drmies (talk) 01:48, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
    • You probably could do without cheese before you could do without words, dear Mandarax. Oh, I'm watching the girls drink tea and nibble on tea biscuits, preventing to be beavers--that's enough to turn one off of tea biscuits. Drmies (talk) 22:09, 10 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
      • Sorry for being too wordy. I have slightly modified my response. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 23:34, 10 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

          • I've started thinking about becoming vegetarian (and am definitely eating less meat), but there's no way I could be vegan. Slightly off-topic, today at Publix, my friend and I spotted chitterlings right next to kosher for Passover matzoh balls. LadyofShalott 00:15, 11 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
            • Let's hope Mandarax hasn't googled "starry night" and "bacon". Drmies (talk) 03:00, 11 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
              • No, I hadn't. Wow, that's... well, I was gonna say that's crazy, but then I remembered that I wrote an article about a woman who sculpted in butter, so I guess it's all relative.

Lady, go for it! (The vegetarianism, that is; not the chitlins.) A slightly more svelte signature → Mandarax 08:42, 11 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

                • I thought you'd approve, Mandarax. What prompted the new signature? LadyofShalott 17:19, 12 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
                  • The signature was in response to Bbb23 saying above that my signature was "kinda wordy". But it was a one-time thing, and I'm back to my usual bloated 230-character sig. (That's the real reason I don't run for admin; people check this and object if it's too long.) MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 17:58, 12 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
                    • I don't know whether to take that comment seriously or not, but I can't see that actually preventing you from being an admin. • Cheese, definitely. Also, my daughters just came up and asked what I was doing, and instead of saying what I usually say ("helping to work on an encyclopedia") I told the truth ("just screwing around and answering a quiz"). They want to know if they can vote too. If so, one daughter says "bacon", and the other (vegetarian, and far too serious) says she would need to think about it for a while before answering for sure, but probably cheese. Or tabouli. --Floquenbeam (talk) 19:19, 11 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
    • Of course their answers are relevant. They are admin children. I'll await the other daughter's answer; in the meantime, Rosie said "bread". I'll ask her older sister when she takes a break from Harry Potter. Drmies (talk) 19:26, 11 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
      • Are you saying that non-admin children can't vote? This is clearly administrative abuse, not to mention discrimination against those editors who don't have children (who are easily manipulated, btw, although that may go the other way as well). I think third cousins should get a vote.--Bbb23 (talk) 19:31, 11 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Is it wrong to CSD something like this? edit

I mean, it's obviously a Good Thing™. But it's horribly spammy, and a search for "WebAlert" turns up all sorts of non-notable things that aren't it. And really, it's an extension for web browsers. It's hard to get notability for that. (Though it can be done.) Ignatzmicetalk 02:12, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • I think it's speediable, yes, as promotional. And if that's denied AfD would be the next step. Good Thing, Bad Thing? We're value-neutral here... Drmies (talk) 02:25, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
    • Done, then. And considering the username (Prometheusmedia) for WP:UAA, but the website has "MediaMix" on the bottom, not "Promethiusmedia". So I won't for now.

Further details as events warrant.   Ignatzmicetalk 02:33, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
      • Okay, sorry to use your page as a mini-ANI here (if it should head over there, you may move this). But I'm heading for the road soon, won't be back until this evening, and I would appreciate it if you or a passing admin (calling in that favor on the Floqmeister, perhaps? No obligation) could deal with that page and Prometheusmedia. I don't know if the accusations warrant a block or what; if so it'll be a "difficult" block, I expect, and you'll definitely want to revoke talk page access. Thanks, Ignatzmicetalk 16:18, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Well, there is a company called "Prometheus media" (don't know if it's related to WebAlert) and thus, yes, it violates our username policy. I blocked the account. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 16:29, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

ISBN script edit

I think there's a tool that will check and fix ISBN numbers. Do you what it is and how to use it? PumpkinSky talk 02:14, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • Yes, no, and no: I know it exists since people have run it on my articles--even recently. I thought it was Jeunes filles en serre chaude, maybe, but apparently not. Any of the regular guests? Mandarax? Bgwhite? Crisco 1492? Drmies (talk) 02:27, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
    • I use this to expand 10 digits to 13. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 02:30, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
    • @PumpkinSky: I'm not aware of any tools to fix an ISBN number, except for converting 10 digit ISBN to 13 digit (and visa versa). It would have to be internet based. The beginning of ISBN numbers are made up of a known quantities, such as country and publisher. Except for the last digit, the ending is somewhat random. Different media and versions of the same book will have a different ISBN number.
    • There are two places to look for invalid ISBN.
      1. Category:Articles with invalid ISBNs. This list is generated from Helpful Pixie Bot. However, the bot is off-line since Rich Farmbrough was blocked.
      2. Checkwiki does a monthly scan of dumps and a daily scan of revised articles. It is located here. This is the new location for checkwiki as it is being migrated from toolserver to WMFlabs. WMFlabs is hanging upto 20% of the time, so if you get an error or it just sits there, give it a few minutes. I'm the one migrating checkwiki and rewriting much of the software. So, if you see a problem, give me a yell. Bgwhite (talk) 04:13, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • I assume this is about fixing the actual digits of ISBNs, which is a useful thing to do. In contrast, the last time Helpful Pixie Bot "fixed" ISBNs, all it did, as far as I could tell from the many diffs I examined out of the thousands which cluttered my watchlist every day for an extended period, was to add hyphens to ISBNs. It's perfectly fine for people to do this in conjunction with other edits which are actually useful, but I feel that just "fixing" hundreds of thousands of unbroken, perfectly functional ISBNs was exceedingly unhelpful. Who cares or will even notice if they're in a standardized format, as long as the numbers are correct? MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 22:14, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks guys. @Mandarax--maybe that's what I was thinking of. I was looking for something to make sure the ISBNs are correct. As for who cares about the hyphens....the many who live off MOS stuff and have a hissy if you have a ndash instead of emdash etc. But I won't name them, we all know who they are. PumpkinSky talk 22:17, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Hehe. There's a huge difference between a person getting the text of an individual article, which people actually read, into the correct format, and a bot adding hyphens to hundreds of thousands of ISBNs, which virtually nobody will ever even look at. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 22:32, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
You can add this to your custom Javascript, which will check all your ISBNs among many other things: "importScript('User:Cameltrader/Advisor.js');". Eric Corbett 22:42, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Eric. Hope you are well. PumpkinSky talk 22:45, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Your thoughts edit

I'm inclined to open a thread re: user Vuilgat at the COI noticeboard; it's a single purpose account for promoting Roy Feinson and his interests. Let me know if you think there's a better approach to this. Thanks, 76.248.144.216 (talk) 23:22, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • You have more faith than I do in such threads on such boards. How about sending the article to AfD to see how it fares? He might be notable though. Do you know "vuil gat" means "dirty hole"? Drmies (talk) 01:44, 14 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Not really; threads sometimes languish and fade unless a user has done some obviously egregious stuff, and this isn't terribly sexy, just run of the mill self-promotion. Template warring is inane--'course, I can't do AfD as an IP, and I think he, the book, and the photography could all squeak by. But it would be close. Anyway, I'm away for a week beginning tomorrow, so if I ring back in it'll be under a different #. Best, 76.248.144.216 (talk) 02:12, 14 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Well, maybe that's the way to go then. Hey, have a great week. Is your mother in law involved? Cause that's my week. Drmies (talk) 02:18, 14 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Well, I went a different direction [1]. Though not a high profile venue, it's got a devoted crew. Visiting my folks, which gives me a chance to do the driving and shopping for them. Painted a couple of cute kids today, grandchildren of a friend. Nice change of pace; one grows tired of painting nudes all the time, you know. Do you have the chance to enjoy summer, or do they pull you in for off-season meetings? 76.248.144.216 (talk) 02:29, 14 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • No, I don't know how you get tired of it. My summer consisted of teaching and driving my kids to swim team, so it's best to skip that subject. In fact, I'm kind of glad school started--finally I will have some time for myself. I hope you enjoy the visit, though; nice of you to not forget them. Drmies (talk) 02:33, 14 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Yeah. Haha, you don't want to be around me when the food runs out. I'm already grumpy, but you don't know what anger is until you've seen a diabetic with a low blood sugar and the food running out. Why are you ignoring gratuitous outing and personal attacks? edit

I think you accidentally closed this before the boomerang landed. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 03:47, 14 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • Why can't you simply ask me to undo it instead of making a rather silly allegation (I can't ignore stuff I'm not aware of)? Or is that a rhetorical question as well? Drmies (talk) 13:58, 14 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
    • That information is in the thread that you closed, complete with links to current and previous offences. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 14:17, 14 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Mark Arsten (ping!) suppressed the information. Mark, I don't know how familiar you are with applying Scientology sanctions (I am not), but they might well be applicable here. In addition, please have a look at the ANI thread Delicious carbuncle, above, so unceremoniously points to, and consider whether that thread should be reopened for discussion the flight path of said boomerang. Of course, if you simply block Laval for outing or other violations, there is no need for it. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 14:02, 14 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
    • I'm in over my head here, I don't know anything about Scientology sanctions. Do we usually block for a first offense for outing? I've never dealt with that as an admin either. I'll re-open a section of that ANI. Mark Arsten (talk) 14:06, 14 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
      • That's fine with me. I think Sandstein has dealt with Scientology before, and I'm sure a host of others have as well. "Boomerang" is just not the best way to deal with more complicated issues. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 15:12, 14 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

The riot, and resulting massacre of immigrant Chinese miners by white immigrant miners, was the result of racial prejudice toward the Chinese miners, who were perceived to be taking jobs from the white miners. The Union Pacific Coal Department found it economically beneficial to give preference in hiring to Chinese miners, who were willing to work for lower wages than their white counterparts, angering the white miners. When the rioting ended, at least 28 Chinese miners were dead and 15 were injured. Rioters burned 78 Chinese homes, resulting in approximately $150,000 in property damage (equal to $5.09 million in 2020 terms). The massacre in Rock Springs touched off a wave of anti-Chinese violence, especially in the Puget Sound area of Washington Territory.

Something for you maybe? I thought. Nobody is eaten, though. Now tell me, why do we need so many small nasty categories? Category:Gongs[2] goes to no more than 8 Subcategories, than Category:Gongs of Malaysia, goes to Subcategory:Gongs of Malaysia then go to Category:Gongs of Sabah. Same thing Category:Fireplaces[3]. Why? I really am tired of this. And many good pictures just vanish in this system. Just too many subcategories of subcategories of subcategories. Any relative? Who is "P. Knuttel"? I found a WPC Knuttel, but wasn't sure it was the same person (my stepsister is a retired graphic arts lecturer- she took her students to Amsterdam a couple of years back). Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 20:46, 14 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
I tried very hard to figure that out. But I remember what I forgot: to ask my friend, the graphic designer (in Amsterdam). Drmies (talk) 21:56, 14 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Speaking of DYKs, I think you may not have noticed that Template:Did you know nominations/Borley Church is awaiting your response. I don't know what the reviewer's cryptic "italicization is not correct" means. It's slightly possible it was in reference to the (pictured) which I fixed, but it's certainly much more likely to be something in the article. I'm not seeing it, but maybe it's just because I'm too tired.... MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 01:26, 15 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
You know what, I saw that a few days ago and it didn't even register. So thanks for the pointer; I also don't know what's supposed to be wrong. Drmies (talk) 02:30, 15 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
I bet Mandarax is right about the italics complaint and fixed it in accordance with WP guidelines. But, gosh, I hate that guideline. The parentheses are part of sentence-level syntax; the italics on the direction (pictures) is the child of the parenthesis. I haven't copy-edited for a press or journal yet which thought that the parenthesis should inherit any typographical qualities from its child: it's just illogical to italicize the marks of parentheses, the ,inverse, ,but, ,nearly ,akin ,to, ,delimiting ,each ,element ,in ,an ,apposition ,with ,a ,comma. </stoginess>  davidiad { t } 02:44, 15 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Literally Now Literally Means Figuratively edit

Literally suck it you word Nazis, er, Mandarax's of the world. Literally now literally means figuratievely. Bgwhite (talk) 03:48, 15 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

I've gotta agree that it "might be the most unforgivable thing dictionaries have ever done". But please refrain from painting such scary imagery as the potential for multiple Mandaraxes in the world. And don't try to weasel out by saying that you meant it figuratively; that word literally does not exist any more. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 09:45, 15 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Mandarax, as a descriptive grammarian I have to agree with the decision made by for instance the Oxford dictionary. Unfortunately. Drmies (talk) 16:32, 15 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
At least the Oxford dictionary makes it clear that this usage is problematic and not accepted in formal contexts. Some of the other dictionaries have allowed the inmates to take over the asylum (not literally, but nearly so). --Orlady (talk) 17:28, 15 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • So very sad that stupidity has "literally" become so pervasive in society today. It makes me wonder if perhaps it would be better at times to leave a child behind. Better for the child. Better for society. Better for humanity. Better for evolution. But it looks like that ship has sailed. Oh well. — Ched :  ?  10:03, 15 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

          • I believe the correct wording of that statement would be "I illiterately died laughing." --Orlady (talk) 17:30, 15 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
        • Well, I hate to be a semantics nazi, but it's not a question of grammar. It bothers me as well, by the way--then again, why do we let phrases like "going forward" go unpunished? Or "having said that"? Drmies (talk) 16:39, 15 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • I also dislike the literal misuse of literally. AutomaticStrikeout () 16:40, 15 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
    • I thought one of the rules of defining terms was that you can't use the term in the definition... "Used to acknowledge that something is not literally true but is used for emphasis or to express strong feeling." so, when I say I'm literally dying, I'm saying I'm "Used to acknowledge that something is not 'Used to acknowledge that something is not Used to acknowledge that something is not Used to acknowledge that something is not literally true but is used for emphasis or to express strong feeling. true but is used for emphasis or to express strong feeling. true but is used for emphasis or to express strong feeling.' true but is used for emphasis or to express strong feeling dying. Yes, The Biggest Loser again edit

I think no one really knows this as better as you are since you have really investigated this situation before. That is why they just are just very easy in giving those pages with one week to one month protection. Thanks again for protecting those pages. :D Can we protect the remaining pages too? So that they can't vandalize the articles anymore? I know that Wikipedia has this policy that prevents non-vandalized to least vandalized articles from being protected without any major vandalism activity. But since we really know this people that when an article they have vandalized has been protected, they will only move to the next non-protected page and continue their vandalism. This just a precautionary measure, a prevention. Or, I have a collection of IPs here... we can do a rangeblock perhaps?

Thanks again sir! :D--AR E N Z O Y 1 6At a l k 14:42, 16 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • Hey, again--I don't know how to do range blocks, and if I try I might shut down the free world or the Egyptian opposition (whichever side that is these days); let's not take that risk. If you let me know what pages to protect I will be glad to do so; at some point I'll start protecting them indefinitely, if that's what needs to be done (wait: I see you have that list in your sandbox9). But please note: I haven't totally investigated this, and I'm no expert--what would be helpful is if you explain, in a paragraph or two in that sandbox, precisely what they're doing and what's wrong with it. If I get hit by a train tomorrow you want to make sure someone can take over. Drmies (talk) 23:04, 16 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for protecting and extending the protection of some articles sir. I understand that a range block is not a good solution for now since this issue is not really that big enough to merit a range block. I have also added the the template and short description and explanation in the sandbox... and even renamed the sandbox in order for some people to notice and understand the issue.
Here are the following pages that needs to be protected:
These articles will expire on September, so better at least extend the protection until November 2013 or much better until 2014
These articles will expire in the next few days
These articles' protection had expired
I am anticipating that if we block those all articles above, they will vandalize these
The other articles not mentioned above will expire on November 2013 or on 2014. The US articles are seldomly vandalized. I don't know why those IPs don't vandalize these articles. I think that the reason behind this is possibly due to the high non-vandalism activity in those pages, so these IPs are skipping them.--AR E N Z O Y 1 6At a l k 07:03, 17 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
I am not that happy about applying long-term protection preemptively, though I've done it already once or twice. Drop me a line if it starts again and I'll be glad to semi-protect. Drmies (talk) 19:57, 18 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Block on User:Brezzy85 edit

Hello, I feel Brezzy85 was acting in good faith, and was unsure what the proper course of action was to propose deletion, given his/her reasoning was valid, in my opinion. Perhaps a little too soon on the block? Looks like another editor redirected the page anyway, likely meeting Brezzy85's concerns. Just a thought. PS love the feller on your page notice! — MusikAnimal talk 20:57, 16 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • Good faith maybe, but too many times in a row, after being warned. Note also that their edit summaries make very little sense, and that the note on your talk page came entirely too late and was followed by yet another blanking. I'm all for having a chat about some content, but not while someone continues to disrupt. I would have restored that redirect, by the way, were it not for a couple of references that discussed her career after the show--but I don't care enough for the article to work on it or argue for it staying there. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 23:00, 16 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Admin request edit

Hey Drmies, I just got a talk page message from some obscure bot telling me that a draft I made in AfC a year and a half ago about which I had long since forgotten still exists. Apparently, I put it in main space myself or something, I don't know, I had under 500 edits and it was over 18 months ago, so I really don't remember, but nevertheless, would you or an admin friend delete Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Roy Anderson (American football) per WP:CSD#G13? Çöńṣîşṭèņċȳ edit

Something I've discovered here is that no matter what you say or do, no matter how certain you are that you're doing something correctly, there's gonna be someone who thinks you're wrong.

My edit changing a link with an incorrect character to a link with the correct character was reverted, with the reasoning that the incorrect character should be retained for consistency with all of the other incorrect instances of it in the article. That doesn't make any sense to me, but fine – when alerted to the fact that there were other occurrences of it, I went ahead and changed all of them. Now, this took me quite a while, because I checked the affected blue links to ensure that I wasn't breaking any of them. It turned out that in every instance, the existing link with the incorrect character redirected to the page with the correct character in the title. The only thing that I left with the incorrect character was a category which used it.

Okay, problem solved, right? Hehe, this is Wikipedia, so of course not! I was again reverted, because there's another incorrect character in the article. Apparently, as long as there's any incorrect character, they should all be incorrect. (The user also reverted me for the same thing at least one other time.) I don't really care, so I'm done with it, but I'm wondering if this could possibly be one of those instances where I think I'm right, but I'm not.... What a world, what a world.... Template:Did you know nominations/Muggeseggele edit

Drmies, I noticed that you said the article needed to be seriously Englished, and made some edits in the next hour that worked on that issue. Do you consider that it still needs serious Englishing, or is it adequate now? An icon on the template would be helpful so the current state of the article and nomination is clearer, and a notification to the nominator's page might be in order; I'm happy to take care of the latter if you could do the former. Know anyone with a dolphin ankle tattoo? edit

South Asian river dolphin needs some repair in that there's some issue with combining one of the species information with the genus while splitting the info for the other species out and I'm not sure what's species specific vs what's pertinent to the genus. My Use of Cleanup tags . . .User:JCHeverly 19:03, 18 August 2013 (UTC) edit

Here's the deal: whenever I make an article improvement suggestion, I always make sure I have at LEAST one credible reference source. I am using tags because if I put the suggestion on a TALK page, it usually just LANGUISHES there. If I actually go in and BOLDLY EDIT the article itself, within 24 hours Wikiknowitalls/pricks such as Paul Brown Mr Grumpy, etc invariably have my figurative ass thrown up on a notice board wanting my figurative ass blocked for life. It's a bad Catch-22 that Wikipedia has deliberately built into its system. Maybe you're one the pricks, too. That's another problem not just with Wikipedia: the whole anonymous online culture that encourages relentless bullying.User:JCHeverly 19:03, 18 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • Wow, you sound terrifically nice. I assumed some good faith after you placed those rather silly tags on the Clinton articles, but now I guess you were just Fox Newsing those articles. Count me as one of the pricks, sure. FWIW, you used the wrong tags, you should have discussed on the talk page, you will be reverted when you place tags that way again. Drmies (talk) 19:08, 18 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
(edit conflict) John, as your former adopter, I would remind you that maintenance tags' use is to indicate a specific problem explaining how it can be resolved. To do this, it is imperative that in addition to adding the tag, you go to the talk page and explain exactly what the problem is such that it can be resolved quickly and the article will not have an ugly maintenance tag on it indefinitely. The cleanup tag is so broad, that it is virtually useless unless an article is a complete and total mess, in which case other avenues usually should be sought to rectify the problem. If you see a problem with an article, find a specific applicable tag, for example, more references are needed to substantiate content, put the Ref Improve tag on the article and add specific citation needed tags where you see information.
As a fellow Wikipedian, I would tell you that what you are doing is disruptive, particularly when you do it on articles like Bill Clinton, which thousands view daily. A broad cleanup tag does readers no good, and it does fellow editors no good when they have no idea why you feel the article needs cleanup. The best approach is to boldly fix a problem you see yourself. Your use of tags has come to be disruptive, and as such I would strongly recommend that you only use article talk pages and avoid using maintenance tags entirely for a while. If you choose not to heed my suggestion, that's fine, but rest assured you will get more notices like what you got from Drmies, but they will likely not be as polite, and as such, you will probably be less happy than you already seem to be. Thanks. Go Phightins! 19:13, 18 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Quick response, Drmies retort is a bunch or speculation, conjecture, and assumption as to my politics. That's part of my point: We do not know anything about each other on this type of forum. I have explained that placing suggestions about fact checking, error correction, and article on TALK pages just get ignored 80 percent of the time. And as my former adopter, you know what I am saying about the bullying is absolutely accurate. You're just sucking up to those higher up on the Wikipedia pecking order.User:JCHeverly 19:26, 18 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Go Phightins, thanks for your note; sorry I came down on a former mentee of yours. No good deed goes unpunished, you know. JCHeverly, I assume nothing about your politics--really, those complaining about Bill Clinton and Lewinsky, Whitewater, OMG who killed Vince Foster etc. can come from any political camp. I don't need to know anything about you to know that those tags were just disruptive soapboxing at best, on matters discussed years ago already on the article talk pages. Thanks! Drmies (talk) 19:32, 18 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
No problem, Drmies. John, if you want to believe for your personal gratification that I am "sucking up" to Drmies, fine by me. It's not true, but if that would get you to focus on the facts and advice you are being given, whatever. I do know, as your former adopter, that you have a frustration with the process on Wikipedia, and it is admittedly a tad convoluted, but at the end of the day, you can be part of the problem or part of the solution, and slapping maintenance tags willy nilly on articles does not make you part of the solution. Please heed the advice you have been given and know that you are not being targeted. Go Phightins! 19:43, 18 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
It's very important to give all the credible, well documented scandals involving the Clintons total coverage, as Hillary has this huge sense of self-imposed entitlement as to her nomination as the DEM nominee in '16 and eventual MRS Presidency. As lifelong DEM Jerry Brown said the Clintons were "a scandal a week." Perhaps, if Wikipedia did a good job doing complete articles on the VERIFIABLE, WELL DOCUMENTED Clinton presidency scandals, it may make people really think about the type of individual they are electing to the Presidency of the United States. Some of the people voting in 2016 were not even born in 1992. All that I am saying with the Clinton tags.User:JCHeverly 19:47, 18 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Screw-Up edit

I just broke 2RR on List of United States cable and satellite television networks. Got a new editor who is switching Current TV out for Al Jazeera America two days too early. I tried to get the message through that Current TV should remain on the page until it signs off (and AlJaz signs on) on August 20. Being insanely sleepy, I didn't catch my third revert until I had already clicked "Save Page". I have posted a note on the user's talk page. I will accept any block you have to give, cause I did go over 2RR...sleepy or no sleepy. - NeutralhomerTalk • 22:03, 18 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • Hmm. Well. I got a block here for you: sign out and take a nap. Remember to drink plenty of water: 2 quarts a day for people our age. Now go forth and sin no more. Drmies (talk) 22:19, 18 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
    • I did, got about 13 hours of sleep. Having my morning coffee right now. :) Again, I am sorry for my 2RR break. - NeutralhomerTalk • 11:01, 19 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

I am sorry sir, I didn't mean to say that you are racist. I just took offense of the "fringe news outlet" that you said. The subject of my first wiki was researched by me using carefully, adhering to WP's standards.

I hope you won't dismiss my article as just "incredibly minor" because in my country, he is not. He has 200,000 readers. And in WP:ENT #2, that is to be considered as cult following (at least in my country). I hope you consider this in the viewpoint of a Philippine resident.

Sorry for the remark. I was just frustrated because I am seeing my honest 8 hours of work and research going down the drain. killerdork talk 01:37, 20 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Interaction tool edit

I'm sure that I've seen a tool that shows interactions between users. • Brahmin (or Brahmana) refers to an individual belonging to the Hindu priest, artists, teachers, technicians class (varna or pillar of the society) and also to an individual belonging to the Brahmin tribe/caste into which an individual is born. I always thought that you need to be born into this, but of course I understand that people feel repressed by this, and would like to belong to this definition (cast), seeking new ways to get rid of the restrictions. But, I'm not an expert. Hafspajen (talk) 10:49, 22 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

GROM! edit

For quite some time there is a possibly Indian IP-hopping vandal active. The guy has the nasty habit adding capitals where they don't belong and removing proper links to create links to disambiguation pages. Examples of today: Zeenat Aman, Zeenat Aman filmography, Shabana Azmi, Feroz Khan, Tom Alter and Parvarish (1977 film)

Could you do me a favour and semi-protect each and every article related to film in India? Or give a range block to the IPs starting with 5., 90. and 94.?

Or do you have less devastating ideas to deal with this? The Banner talk 12:47, 22 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • Hmm. See, I wouldn't call this vandalism. It's complete and utter incompetence, that's true. They're trying to do something but they suck at it. Have you left them warnings at previous IPs? The only thing to do, really, is to try and talk to them. Or yeah, block every other IP in the world. Drmies (talk) 02:20, 23 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
    • No, I did not leave him messages because he is hopping around over three ranges. I can only see it when another series of articles shows up on Articles With Multiple Dablinks. I did message him in the beginning but by now I have the idea that is is useless because in most cases the dastardly deeds were done "yesterday".
    • I don't believe any more that it is gross incompetence. Five to ten articles a run, about two to three times a week, for about two months. Every time the same pattern like this and this.
    • The most annoying thing is that I am following a vandal that is in fact out of my sight, I can only follow his trail and repair the damage done. The Banner talk 07:31, 23 August 2013 (UTC) And yes, I should have added smileys to the original "proposal" as it was not realistic.Reply
      • I got it without the smileys; geen zorgen. See, I don't do range blocks, so I really can't help with that. Maybe a post on ANI can help, since it will get a wider audience of admins who do that sort of thing. Still, I don't think it's vandalism, but that's also because I've not seen what all you've seen; based on that one IP's contributions I couldn't say anything more than "dom". BTW, I've never seen that tool you use--to use it to track someone like this, that's pretty clever. No wonder we could build a country out of mud. Now, as for semi-protection, I'm not against it, but only if it's a relatively limited set that get butchered fairly frequently. It's like with the Big Loser vandal (see up on this talk page somewhere)--a record, with a list of articles and IPs, is very helpful for us poor admins. And in the meantime, We zijn weer thuis still isn't written. Drmies (talk) 13:55, 23 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
          • It is not that I track himher, I just recognize the pattern. The Banner talk 21:47, 23 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
        • You probably already know that nl.wp has an article, but with zero references. LadyofShalott 14:05, 23 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
          • Yeah, most of those articles are little more than funny plot summaries and a cast. Again, we have them beat. Hey, thanks so much for your help: I'm in way over my head here, haha, and can hardly keep all the articles and their references straight. But the man totally deserves to be written up properly. Did you see the international reviews I found for Going to the Dogs? I remember that play--I didn't go see it, but it sure raised some eyebrows. And I missed most of those shows: I didn't have liberal parents or friends at the time and went to a very Calvinist high school where they didn't appreciate them progressive Christians with their nudity and stuff. BTW, in the 1970s the VPRO was still run by Protestant ministers, so you can imagine how far those guys went out on a limb. Time has proven them right, of course--it's the best TV broadcaster I know of, besides maybe the BBC; their documentaries (many of them international, and deep and slow, made with great respect for their subjects) are among the best I've ever seen. What's his face on PBS can't touch them. They were also the ones to show things like Shoah and Heimat, groundbreaking and quality films and series. On a par with Schippers, perhaps even better, were Van Kooten en De Bie. Drmies (talk) 17:47, 23 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

I'd love to take you and all y'all there for a weekend of sightseeing. Hey, one more to do in the Schippers series (I'm dropping Plafond over the vloer--too inconsequential and not enough sources), We zijn weer thuis, which I watched, and it was really funny. One of the things I liked about it is that Nel van der Hoed-Smulders had three sons, and one of them was inexplicably black--and it was never even brought up as an issue. I bet K could give a good tour of parts of Mongolia.... so many places. Someday, maybe. • Sounds like fun, Lady. Hey, the poet I'm thinking about bringing to campus next spring is a Transylvanian also. And he plays "John Henry"? Did he? When we go to Amsterdam you can sit on the back of my bike. And I do want K-stick to show us around Mongolia. And Mandarax to take us out to Burning Man--Mandarax, did I tell you my colleague can't go cause she broke her ankle but she can't give you her ticket (I asked) because that's not how it works (anymore)? Also, I really want to go to Algeria. Drmies (talk) 03:24, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
            • Awww, thanks for thinking of me and asking! Coincidentally, a friend just decided last minute to go. I was wondering how anyone could possibly even consider going to Burning Man last minute. Basically, it's like the Macy's Thanksgiving parade – the day after one year's is over, ya' gotta start working on next year's. However, it you'd wrangled me a ticket, I certainly would've somehow managed to work it out. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 04:54, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
            • Wouldn't it be? We could have quite the tour with those places listed alone. Just to clarify, Rosembaum [gonna have to do something about that redlink - I'm pretty sure he's wp:notable] is not Transylvanian; he's local (just in case that was ambiguous). No, he didn't do "John Henry". He did sing a song about moonshining, and he had his portable recording equipment, which he used to record the Transylvanians (teens plus two adult chaperones) singing folk songs in Hungarian to play on his radio program. Too bad about your colleague's neither being able to go to Burning Man, nor to pass along her ticket. LadyofShalott 03:40, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
            • I just started a google search, and now I see why you asked about "John Henry". I feel silly with my explanation now. Suffice it to say he plays and does much more than that one song. LadyofShalott 03:47, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
              • It's a great song, and I have a great version here on CD, from the early 1900s. I'll be glad to help out; I'm almost done with the Schippers stuff. I encourage COI editing--under the right circumstances of course, since often "COI" means "I know something about this shit". Drmies (talk) 03:53, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

User:LadyofShalott/Art Rosenbaum will be blue shortly. I don't think this will be terrbily COI actually. I've never had the chance to meet him before tonight, though I've heard his name for years. LadyofShalott 04:11, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
                  • OK I have a badly written start, but it is a start, and there should be plenty to add, just not when I'm tired out of my mind. Who's the Transylvanian poet you want to bring over? What language do they write in? (And if it's Hungarian or Romanian, how did you get familiar with them? You don't read either of those do you?) The folks we have visiting are all Hungarian speakers from the Szekely Land. LadyofShalott 04:34, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Click on the link, Lady, and that should clear up the language issue quickly enough. It's Maurice Manning. Drmies (talk) 01:22, 26 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • OK apparently I'm just bound to feel silly in this conversation. :) LadyofShalott 02:16, 26 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Don't feel silly, look up him instead.) Warrington(talk) 10:01, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Heh, probably a good strategy, W. I'm making a little progress on the Rosenbaum draft, after what Drmies contributed. Unlike some people I could name, I'm slow at that. LadyofShalott 01:35, 27 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Lady, there is always someone who will speak English around there, no problem with that. You will see. Warrington(talk) 10:01, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

World Mission Society Church of God edit

Perhaps one of your talk page stalkers would look at this article. Until relatively recently, it was moderate in size and subject to the usual contentiousness of this kind of article. Then two IPs from very different parts of the world - and, strangely, neither from Korea - came along and have dramatically increased the size of the article, replete with lots of Korean sources and lengthy Korean quotes (very helpful in an English wikipedia). I admit I can't bear to look at it, so when all else fails ... --Bbb23 (talk) 01:30, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • Hmm. Drmies (talk) 01:58, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
    • Thanks for removing some of the material, Drmies. I've removed the ref quotes (can't stand 'em). I removed both the English and the Korean ones to be even-handed about it. The article is still bloated and problably poorly sourced, but I ain't gonna wade through the Korean sources and attempt poor machine translations. Maybe someone who understands Korean will come along and they can fight about it. Bilingual fights are always so much more entertaining.--Bbb23 (talk) 15:17, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
    • Somebody came to the Teahouse a few days ago asking for advice about using some Korean court documents in this article. Something about a lawsuit between one of these Korean churches and a publisher who put out a critical book. I advised (strongly) against use of such primary sources, and asked if secondary sources such as major newspapers had covered the court case. Skimming the article is tough. Reading the talk page is far worse. True Believers at work. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 03:52, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
      • Hey all. I asked about something similar some time ago here. FYI - I am not one of the two IPs that are involved and have only been jumping in recently to fix grammar and participate in the talk page. Superfly94 (talk) 19:09, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
      • Jim, I only just now remember that a few days ago I saw something funny. It's coming back to me as I'm typing this. Yes--it was a license plate or a sticker on an out-of-state car, and it said something like "I♥CULLEN". Another true believer, clearly. Drmies (talk) 21:07, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Someone didn't close the poem with </poem> ... most likely. Doing so now would make all sig's your sig, and thus would need a little bit of history-digging to use {{unsigned}} ES&L 11:58, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Michel Sicard edit

Here's one for you and your fellow polyglot and multi-art connoisseurs who hang out here. fr:Michel Sicard. Bio on his homepage (the, ahem, obvious source of the Biographie section of the French Wikipedia article). Their article is festooned with templates; I deleted its recreation here, Michel Sicard, as A2 and it had been previously deleted for the same reason. The creator now tells me Sicard himself is the actual author. I referred him to WP:ARTIST but then reading the bio in isolation and poking around Google, I wondered whether the French article isn't approaching notability the wrong way. M. Sicard comes up a few times on Google Books for his work on Sartre, which involves a friendship/collaboration. He's edited key texts and an interview he conducted with Sartre gets cited. On the other hand the art I have yet to find in RS. (Oh, and to add to the fun on Google News, he is presumably not the Michel Sicard who is technical expert to the French fencing team.) I don't think he meets general notability or WP:ARTIST, but does he maybe meet WP:PROF? Yngvadottir (talk) 19:05, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • I am SO tempted to start chopping there--but what's "not a resume" and "lacks secondary sourcing" and "nothing but puffery" in French? Drmies (talk) 19:41, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • I haven't looked at the deleted version; that's too many clicks. So far I find nothing but mentions of the interview with Sartre and de Beauvoir in Obliques 18-19, and a bibliographical bit on Sartre. (I saw no editing of key texts.) As for PROF, the experts are DGG and maybe Randykitty (whose French might even be better than yours!). That French article surely is something. I wonder how long it takes for someone there to get busy with it. Drmies (talk) 19:52, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
    • I think they've employed a lot of the relevant French terminology in the variety of tastefully colored templates at the top of the article '-) There's this and this on the importance of that interview, but now taht I am back from the grocery store, it does seem the editing was confined to the issue of Obliques. He's also collaborated with Michel Butor: list here. Hard to know exactly how much weight to put on his professorship, too. I could presumably wring a bit more out of Google News by adding "- escrime". If anyone else here, such as the 2 you pinged, wants to create a new article, have at :-) Yngvadottir (talk) 21:06, 25 August 2013 (UTC) ... ROFL I see you couldn't resist. Yngvadottir (talk) 21:08, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
      • Ha, well, yes, I couldn't resist. Did you see I got reverted by a bot, Salebot? It even texted me: "Salaud!" it said. Drmies (talk) 21:19, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
        • Not that I saw, it didn't :-) Still, that was splendid fun - you reverted it right back and went on with the "grosse suppression" :-) What I suppose I ought to do is rephrase that copyvio biography section. But there are oodles of people with better French than me, so I will sleep first and then look again :-) Yngvadottir (talk) 21:43, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
" Professeur des Universités - 1 ère classe at Paris-Sorbonne I" and the honorary degree from Harbin are excellent evidence of notability as WP:PROF; he is almost certainly also notable as a writer and as an artist. Drmies, one point: I think that section on "Oeuvres dans les collections publiques" you removed are not library holdings of his writings, but holdings of his "Artist's books" which are artwork, and they're the evidence of notability we use for creative artists Such works are as likely to end up in the special collections of a library as in a museum. You're more qualified than I am to finish with it, but I could do a summarized English version if you do not want to. DGG ( talk ) 00:16, 26 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Perhaps, David. I've reverted. It's nonetheless an awful thing to have to let stand. Drmies (talk) 00:58, 26 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • I have no idea about the importance of an honorary degree from Harbin (generally that confers notability, but I feel you never know with a Chinese university nowadays), but being "professeur première classe" does not, in my opinion, automatically confer notability. Rather, like being full professor at a major US university, it means that someone probably is notable. Just my 2c. (And for once, I have to say "thanks" to the new notification system, because I don't keep this page on my watchlist -too much activity here and not enough time to follow it all- so I wouldn't have seen this without the little red block on top of the page... :-) --Randykitty (talk) 09:10, 26 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Yes, I was also unsure how much weight to give to the honorary professorship from Harbin or the professorial position (although I know of one article that was kept simply because of tenure at Berkeley); plus I recently dealt with another article about an artist who contributed to "art books" that were in the library holdings at places like Stanford and MOMA and that was represented as his works being in their art collections, which I did not buy, personally ... so I'm not sure about that either. As I say, I'm finding sources chiefly about the academic association with Sartre, but haven't yet drilled down into press coverage; if he's one of those French academics who pontificates in the press I would imagine that's his best ticket to an article. Poor chap, if he looks in here I hope he realizes we're essentially trying to find him a way in ... in the meantime I had already told the creator of the article (who says he has been acting on behalf of the prof. himself) to start again in userspace (I've given him this link multiple times) or to go the AfC route, so if he does so, we can build on whatever he comes up with, especially if he follows my admonition to put in references. Otherwise if anyone feels sure enough, they can give them both what I hope would be the happy surprise of a stub. But at this point I'm not sure I could save an article on this guy at AfD, so it won't be me, much though I cherish the "palimpsest Berlin" art movement. • Is he the same tossuer who produced Rare French Artist Book MICHEL BUTOR & MICHEL SICARD Bientot L'Automne? (Artist book with original text by Michel Butor, reproduced via seriagraphy from his manuscript with original drawings and embellishments in color in ink and acrylic by Michel Sicard. Loose folded sheets in hand-painted paper cover in a slipcase designed by Sicard. One of 15 deluxe copies with a suite of 5 drawings in acrylic, initialed by Sicard. The book itself is numbered and signed by author and artist. No writing plates or other markings. A fine copy in thick paper wrappers with delicate cello wrapping which shows a few small tears. Comes in hand-illustrated hard slipcase which in and of itself is a work of art.) You're welcome edit

It was probably a Google Translate. I don't seem to get into the Foreign Parts so much these days - apart from identifying strange languages at PNT. I have managed to get on the Marathi and Mongolian Wikipedias amongst 20 or so others, and cheated on the Mongolian one by leaving an edit summary in Russian. GT is OK for the near-to-English languages, and totally useless for Chinese and Japanese. Unless the article about a Chinese hotel had really meant to say that it had bandits in every room. All good fun, and probably legal. Peridon (talk) 23:20, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Bleahhh edit

Thanks and ugh and similar expressions of distaste. I wouldn't have a Facebook account if it were the sole requirement for a tenured position. Well, maybe if it were the sole requirement for an ordentliche Professur at Berlin. Yngvadottir (talk) 15:23, 26 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • I remember applying for a position in Germany; one was required to send in a portrait photo. Why they didn't pick me must always remain a mystery. My Facebook account is completely incognito; no one knows it's me. No one. Drmies (talk) 16:22, 26 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
