• Although I theoretically support veganism, I've gotta admit that, even before I saw the responses, the first thing I thought of was cheese. Of my three favorite cuisines (Chinese, Thai, and Indian, in no particular order), two don't really use cheese, but it's so important to me that it's the only food for which I feign ignorance about its origins. I know that most cheese isn't considered truly vegetarian because it contains rennet. (As you know, my beloved panir, from that third cuisine, is just milk and acid.)

  I'll never understand baconmania. Even when I ate meat, I was never fond of bacon. For example, I preferred my BLTs made out of soaked and squeezed out Bacos^®, which of course are vegetarian. Of all the common meat dishes around, I find the thought of eating steak to be especially disgusting and revolting. And, BTW, my panties are perfectly dry. Cheese. I mean, it's obviously a Good Thing™. But it's horribly spammy, and a search for "WebAlert" turns up all sorts of non-notable things that aren't it. And really, it's an extension for web browsers.   • @PumpkinSky: I'm not aware of any tools to fix an ISBN number, except for converting 10 digit ISBN to 13 digit (and visa versa). It would have to be internet based. The beginning of ISBN numbers are made up of a known quantities, such as country and publisher. Except for the last digit, the ending is somewhat random. Different media and versions of the same book will have a different ISBN number.
  • There are two places to look for invalid ISBN.
    1. Category:Articles with invalid ISBNs. This list is generated from Helpful Pixie Bot. However, the bot is off-line since Rich Farmbrough was blocked.
    2. Checkwiki does a monthly scan of dumps and a daily scan of revised articles. It is located here. This is the new location for checkwiki as it is being migrated from toolserver to WMFlabs. WMFlabs is hanging upto 20% of the time, so if you get an error or it just sits there, give it a few minutes. I'm the one migrating checkwiki and rewriting much of the software. • I assume this is about fixing the actual digits of ISBNs, which is a useful thing to do. In contrast, the last time Helpful Pixie Bot "fixed" ISBNs, all it did, as far as I could tell from the many diffs I examined out of the thousands which cluttered my watchlist every day for an extended period, was to add hyphens to ISBNs. It's perfectly fine for people to do this in conjunction with other edits which are actually useful, but I feel that just "fixing" hundreds of thousands of unbroken, perfectly functional ISBNs was exceedingly unhelpful. Melancholy man

Today's featured picture The Rock Springs massacre occurred in 1885 in the present-day United States city of Rock Springs, Wyoming. The riot, and resulting massacre of immigrant Chinese miners by white immigrant miners, was the result of racial prejudice toward the Chinese miners, who were perceived to be taking jobs from the white miners. The Union Pacific Coal Department found it economically beneficial to give preference in hiring to Chinese miners, who were willing to work for lower wages than their white counterparts, angering the white miners. When the rioting ended, at least 28 Chinese miners were dead and 15 were injured. Rioters burned 78 Chinese homes, resulting in approximately $150,000 in property damage (equal to $5.09 million in 2020 terms). The massacre in Rock Springs touched off a wave of anti-Chinese violence, especially in the Puget Sound area of Washington Territory. I bet Mandarax is right about the italics complaint and fixed it in accordance with WP guidelines. But, gosh, I hate that guideline. The parentheses are part of sentence-level syntax; the italics on the direction (pictures) is the child of the parenthesis. Yes, The Biggest Loser again

I think no one really knows this as better as you are since you have really investigated this situation before. That is why they just are just very easy in giving those pages with one week to one month protection. Thanks again for protecting those pages. :D Can we protect the remaining pages too? So that they can't vandalize the articles anymore? I know that Wikipedia has this policy that prevents non-vandalized to least vandalized articles from being protected without any major vandalism activity. But since we really know this people that when an article they have vandalized has been protected, they will only move to the next non-protected page and continue their vandalism. This just a precautionary measure, a prevention. Or, I have a collection of IPs here... we can do a rangeblock perhaps?

Something I've discovered here is that no matter what you say or do, no matter how certain you are that you're doing something correctly, there's gonna be someone who thinks you're wrong.

My edit changing a link with an incorrect character to a link with the correct character was reverted, with the reasoning that the incorrect character should be retained for consistency with all of the other incorrect instances of it in the article. That doesn't make any sense to me, but fine – when alerted to the fact that there were other occurrences of it, I went ahead and changed all of them. Now, this took me quite a while, because I checked the affected blue links to ensure that I wasn't breaking any of them. It turned out that in every instance, the existing link with the incorrect character redirected to the page with the correct character in the title. The only thing that I left with the incorrect character was a category which used it.

Okay, problem solved, right? Hehe, this is Wikipedia, so of course not! I was again reverted, because there's another incorrect character in the article. Apparently, as long as there's any incorrect character, they should all be incorrect. (The user also reverted me for the same thing at least one other time.) I don't really care, so I'm done with it, but I'm wondering if this could possibly be one of those instances where I think I'm right, but I'm not.... What a world, what a world.... Here's the deal: whenever I make an article improvement suggestion, I always make sure I have at LEAST one credible reference source. I am using tags because if I put the suggestion on a TALK page, it usually just LANGUISHES there. If I actually go in and BOLDLY EDIT the article itself, within 24 hours Wikiknowitalls/pricks such as Paul Brown Mr Grumpy, etc invariably have my figurative ass thrown up on a notice board wanting my figurative ass blocked for life. It's a bad Catch-22 that Wikipedia has deliberately built into its system. Maybe you're one the pricks, too. (edit conflict) John, as your former adopter, I would remind you that maintenance tags' use is to indicate a specific problem explaining how it can be resolved. To do this, it is imperative that in addition to adding the tag, you go to the talk page and explain exactly what the problem is such that it can be resolved quickly and the article will not have an ugly maintenance tag on it indefinitely. The cleanup tag is so broad, that it is virtually useless unless an article is a complete and total mess, in which case other avenues usually should be sought to rectify the problem. If you see a problem with an article, find a specific applicable tag, for example, more references are needed to substantiate content, put the Ref Improve tag on the article and add specific citation needed tags where you see information.

As a fellow Wikipedian, I would tell you that what you are doing is disruptive, particularly when you do it on articles like Bill Clinton, which thousands view daily. A broad cleanup tag does readers no good, and it does fellow editors no good when they have no idea why you feel the article needs cleanup. The best approach is to boldly fix a problem you see yourself. Your use of tags has come to be disruptive, and as such I would strongly recommend that you only use article talk pages and avoid using maintenance tags entirely for a while. If you choose not to heed my suggestion, that's fine, but rest assured you will get more notices like what you got from Drmies, but they will likely not be as polite, and as such, you will probably be less happy than you already seem to be. It's very important to give all the credible, well documented scandals involving the Clintons total coverage, as Hillary has this huge sense of self-imposed entitlement as to her nomination as the DEM nominee in '16 and eventual MRS Presidency. I just broke 2RR on List of United States cable and satellite television networks. Got a new editor who is switching Current TV out for Al Jazeera America two days too early. I tried to get the message through that Current TV should remain on the page until it signs off (and AlJaz signs on) on August 20. Being insanely sleepy, I didn't catch my third revert until I had already clicked "Save Page". I have posted a note on the user's talk page. I'm sure that I've seen a tool that shows interactions between users. I'm having trouble with someone not AGF'ing at an AfD and it is not the first time that they have jumped in and almost immediately turned an AfD into a personalised discussion against me ... but I can only recall one prior example. For quite some time there is a possibly Indian IP-hopping vandal active. The guy has the nasty habit adding capitals where they don't belong and removing proper links to create links to disambiguation pages. Examples of today: Zeenat Aman, Zeenat Aman filmography, Shabana Azmi, Feroz Khan, Tom Alter and Parvarish (1977 film)

Could you do me a favour and semi-protect each and every article related to film in India? Or give a range block to the IPs starting with 5., 90. and 94.?

I did message him in the beginning but by now I have the idea that is is useless because in most cases the dastardly deeds were done "yesterday".

Did you see the international reviews I found for Going to the Dogs? I remember that play--I didn't go see it, but it sure raised some eyebrows. And I missed most of those shows: I didn't have liberal parents or friends at the time and went to a very Calvinist high school where they didn't appreciate them progressive Christians with their nudity and stuff. BTW, in the 1970s the VPRO was still run by Protestant ministers, so you can imagine how far those guys went out on a limb. Time has proven them right, of course--it's the best TV broadcaster I know of, besides maybe the BBC; their documentaries (many of them international, and deep and slow, made with great respect for their subjects) are among the best I've ever seen. What's his face on PBS can't touch them. They were also the ones to show things like Shoah and Heimat, groundbreaking and quality films and series. He did sing a song about moonshining, and he had his portable recording equipment, which he used to record the Transylvanians (teens plus two adult chaperones) singing folk songs in Hungarian to play on his radio program. Perhaps one of your talk page stalkers would look at this article. Until relatively recently, it was moderate in size and subject to the usual contentiousness of this kind of article. Then two IPs from very different parts of the world - and, strangely, neither from Korea - came along and have dramatically increased the size of the article, replete with lots of Korean sources and lengthy Korean quotes (very helpful in an English wikipedia). The article is still bloated and problably poorly sourced, but I ain't gonna wade through the Korean sources and attempt poor machine translations.   • Somebody came to the Teahouse a few days ago asking for advice about using some Korean court documents in this article. Something about a lawsuit between one of these Korean churches and a publisher who put out a critical book. I advised (strongly) against use of such primary sources, and asked if secondary sources such as major newspapers had covered the court case. Skimming the article is tough. Michel Sicard

Here's one for you and your fellow polyglot and multi-art connoisseurs who hang out here. fr:Michel Sicard. Bio on his homepage (the, ahem, obvious source of the Biographie section of the French Wikipedia article). Their article is festooned with templates; I deleted its recreation here, Michel Sicard, as A2 and it had been previously deleted for the same reason. The creator now tells me Sicard himself is the actual author. I referred him to WP:ARTIST but then reading the bio in isolation and poking around Google, I wondered whether the French article isn't approaching notability the wrong way. M. Sicard comes up a few times on Google Books for his work on Sartre, which involves a friendship/collaboration. He's edited key texts and an interview he conducted with Sartre gets cited. On the other hand the art I have yet to find in RS. (Oh, and to add to the fun on Google News, he is presumably not the Michel Sicard who is technical expert to the French fencing team.) I don't think he meets general notability or WP:ARTIST, but does he maybe meet WP:PROF? Yngvadottir (talk) 19:05, 25 August 2013 (UTC)

• I haven't looked at the deleted version; that's too many clicks. So far I find nothing but mentions of the interview with Sartre and de Beauvoir in Obliques 18-19, and a bibliographical bit on Sartre. (I saw no editing of key texts.) As for PROF, the experts are DGG and maybe Randykitty (whose French might even be better than yours!). That French article surely is something. He's also collaborated with Michel Butor: list here. Hard to know exactly how much weight to put on his professorship, too. I could presumably wring a bit more out of Google News by adding "- escrime". " Professeur des Universités - 1 ère classe at Paris-Sorbonne I" and the honorary degree from Harbin are excellent evidence of notability as WP:PROF; he is almost certainly also notable as a writer and as an artist. Drmies, one point: I think that section on "Oeuvres dans les collections publiques" you removed are not library holdings of his writings, but holdings of his "Artist's books" which are artwork, and they're the evidence of notability we use for creative artists Such works are as likely to end up in the special collections of a library as in a museum. • I have no idea about the importance of an honorary degree from Harbin (generally that confers notability, but I feel you never know with a Chinese university nowadays), but being "professeur première classe" does not, in my opinion, automatically confer notability. Rather, like being full professor at a major US university, it means that someone probably is notable. Just my 2c. • Yes, I was also unsure how much weight to give to the honorary professorship from Harbin or the professorial position (although I know of one article that was kept simply because of tenure at Berkeley); plus I recently dealt with another article about an artist who contributed to "art books" that were in the library holdings at places like Stanford and MOMA and that was represented as his works being in their art collections, which I did not buy, personally ... so I'm not sure about that either. As I say, I'm finding sources chiefly about the academic association with Sartre, but haven't yet drilled down into press coverage; if he's one of those French academics who pontificates in the press I would imagine that's his best ticket to an article. Poor chap, if he looks in here I hope he realizes we're essentially trying to find him a way in ... in the meantime I had already told the creator of the article (who says he has been acting on behalf of the prof. himself) to start again in userspace (I've given him this link multiple times) or to go the AfC route, so if he does so, we can build on whatever he comes up with, especially if he follows my admonition to put in references. Otherwise if anyone feels sure enough, they can give them both what I hope would be the happy surprise of a stub. But at this point I'm not sure I could save an article on this guy at AfD, so it won't be me, much though I cherish the "palimpsest Berlin" art movement. It was probably a Google Translate. I don't seem to get into the Foreign Parts so much these days - apart from identifying strange languages at PNT. I have managed to get on the Marathi and Mongolian Wikipedias amongst 20 or so others, and cheated on the Mongolian one by leaving an edit summary in Russian. GT is OK for the near-to-English languages, and totally useless for Chinese and Japanese. Unless the article about a Chinese hotel had really meant to say that it had bandits in every room.
