WikiCup 2018 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition, with 4 points required to qualify for round 2. With 53 contestants qualifying, the groups for round 2 are slightly smaller than usual, with the two leaders from each group due to qualify for round 3 as well as the top sixteen remaining users.

Our top scorers in round 1 were:

• Aoba47 led the field with a featured article, 8 good articles and 42 GARs, giving a total of 666 points.
• FrB.TG , a WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points, gained from a featured article and masses of bonus points.
• Ssven2, another WikiCup newcomer, was in third place with 403 points, garnered from a featured article, a featured list, a good article and twelve GARs.
• Ceranthor, Numerounovedant, Carbrera, Farang Rak Tham and Cartoon network freak all had over 200 points, but like all the other contestants, now have to start again from scratch. A good achievement was the 193 GARs performed by WikiCup contestants, comparing very favourably with the 54 GAs they achieved.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

For the record, Peacenik162's attempt to have me blocked backfired severely. Their complaint was dismissed, and they instead received an official warning for edit warring. They ignored that warning, just like they've ignored every other piece of advise they have been given, and accordingly they have been temporarily blocked from editing. That's what happens when you completely trample all over Wikipedia's guidelines then falsely accuse other people of violating them. Better luck next time. Freikorp (talk) 08:46, 7 March 2018 (UTC)

@Beyond My Ken: I must say I'm surprised and somewhat perplexed to see this request. I am well aware of the history associated with the Freikorps. I am of German, Irish, Chinese and Maori heritage (yes, really) and I am fascinated by the history associated with all these peoples. I also have a strong interest in military history. I can only assume this request has something to do with the fact certain Freikorps were associated with the Nazi Party. However, the concept of volunteer Freikorp units dates back to the 18th century. The Freikorps were not Nazis; such a belief is an oversimplification of a complex issue. I'm actually mildly offended by this request as my interpretation of it is that I should be ashamed of my German heritage. I'd be equally upset if I'd picked a username based on Irish heritage that could be tangibly linked to Irish republican groups (A lot of Irish military and political groups are connected to The Troubles in some manner), and you asked me to change that, or if I'd picked a Chinese username that could be somehow connected to the current Chinese government, which as I'm sure you're aware has a pretty poor human rights record. I've been editing Wikipedia for 10 years. I picked the name 10 years ago when I was obviously younger and actually in the army myself, it's not a username I'd register today, though I don't see a major issue with it. I know that you're a Wikipedia of long standing - if you weren't, I probably would have headed directly to WP:UAA instead of here. I can't say that I have as deep an understanding of the history of the Freikorps as you do, but I am aware that they predate the inter-war period. And you are right that to say "Freikorps = Nazi" is a drastic and unsupportable simplification. Nevertheless, in my opinion -- and I'm fully aware that many on Wikipedia would disagree -- "Freikorps" as a concept has been irrevocably stained by the historical connection between them and the Nazis, much as the term "stormtrooper" -- a perfectly reasonable description of a certain kind of shock troop -- is now permanently unusable without bringing up Nazi connotations. (It was no accident that Star Wars chose "stormtroopers" to describe the Imperial troops, the clear purpose was to make it obvious to the audience that they were the bad guys.)

We live in bad times, Freikorp. Every single day I deal with numerous attempts to soften the history of the Nazis, to make current neo-Nazi groups look more palatable, or to burnish the reputation of Holocaust deniers. I don't think that you are one of those people, I think you are a dedicated editor of Wikipedia, but I also think that a name that might have passed muster 10 years ago is, in 2018, less acceptable than it was.

Since you quite apparently don't want to change your name, I will do nothing further. I have no plans to go to UAA, or the noticeboards, or even to continue the discussion here. You have no reason to be worried that I'm going to hassle you in any way. I simply thought that, given the chance, you might take into account the feelings of other Wikipedians and consider a name change. @Beyond My Ken: I appreciate your honesty and the fact you've contacted me about the issue here. I can see your point about the Nazis having tainted the term. The Nazis tainted a lot of things unfortunately. I would, for example, wholeheartedly support my government bringing in a solid eugenics program. In saying that I feel the need to clarify I don't believe in necessarily preserving the "purity" of any race, as I said I am a mixed-race person, and the last time I looked into the very limited research that gets done on eugenics today it seemed to indicate that our species would be better off if there was more race-mixing. Nevertheless, the Nazis tainted the whole concept of eugenics research with their bullshit ideas about racial purity, so no government is going to bring one in probably for centuries, which is a right shame as far as I'm concerned.

I hate the alt-right, I really do. At this point I'm tempted to waffle into how much I hate them, but I won't. I'm a little hurt by you saying I'm not taking other Wikipedian's feelings into consideration. The fact remains you're the first person who's brought the issue up with me. If multiple people had told me they find my username offensive I would have changed it years ago. The Freikorps have been largely forgotten by history. I'd say at least 9 out of 10 people wouldn't have a clue who they were. When I was a teenager 'Freikorp' was my username for everything; today this is the only place where I still use it. Over the years many people have asked me what the name meant, several have asked me if I was German, but nobody ever asked me if I was affiliated with any kind of neo-nazi group. But i understand the alt-right movement is, unfortunately, gaining a lot of steam. I'd hate people to think I was affiliated with them. Tell you what, I'm OK with you bringing my name up at UAA if you want to. If a consensus is reached that it is offensive I'll happily change it. G'day, Freikorp. I noticed the photo on your User page, taken at the "Wikipedia meetup" in Sydney. I am from Sydney myself, and I would be interested to know about events like that. Hi Gronk Oz, and thanks for your message. They are most certainly open to all editors. You can keep track of what's happening in the way of Sydney meetups by watching the page Wikipedia:Meetup/Sydney. The January 2018 meetup, where that photo was taken, was actually the first meetup in Sydney for quite some time. We were hoping Sydney meetups would become a regular thing again though, as they apparently were a couple years ago. No one is 'in charge' of organising the meet-ups so at this stage I have no idea when someone will propose another one. Daft Club cited reference

I hate to mention this, but that book appears to lift its wording directly from lines in the Daft Club Wikipedia article (and related articles). As I mentioned before, the information about the service shutting down was added as firsthand knowledge — a wiki editor noticed the Daft Club site stopped working back in 2003, and added the info to the wiki page. Hi there. Well-spotted. Obviously I'd prefer if they hadn't lifted the information from Wikipedia as per WP:CIRCULAR. However, personally I don't have a problem with it in this case as we both know the information is completely accurate. The information cited is not used to say anything controversial or that is ever likely to be challenged in itself, and whether they lifted it or not it has been published by an established and reliable source. WikiCup 2018 May newsletter

The second round of the 2018 WikiCup has now finished. Most contestants who advanced to the next round scored upwards of 100 points, but two with just 10 points managed to scrape through into round 3. Our top scorers in the last round were:

• Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with three featured articles
• Iazyges, with nine good articles and lots of bonus points
• Yashthepunisher, a first time contestant, with two featured lists
• SounderBruce, a finalist last year, with seventeen good topic articles
• Usernameunique, a first time contestant, with fourteen DYKs
• Muboshgu, a seasoned competitor, with three ITNs and
• Courcelles, another first time contestant, with twenty-seven GARs

So far contestants have achieved twelve featured articles between them and a splendid 124 good articles. Commendably, 326 GARs have been completed during the course of the 2018 WikiCup, so the backlog of articles awaiting GA review has been reduced as a result of contestants' activities. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met; most of the GARs are fine, but a few have been a bit skimpy.

Hi Freikorp. I'm contacting you because I understand you attended the most recent Sydney meetup in January. I'm a Wikimedian from Perth, and a member of the Perth meetup group. I will be visiting Sydney on the weekend of 26-27 May, and I'm interested in organising a meetup. Are you available to attend? I'm assuming that the preferred time would be the Saturday evening (26 May), but I could also make it earlier in the day, or on the Sunday during the day. Saumarez Homestead

Thanks for the kind note - alas, I can't take credit for it! The New South Wales State Heritage Register has been released under a CC-BY license, allowing us to use its wealth of information about historic NSW sites. Kerry Raymond has created a wikifier-thingamajig which makes it easy to generate articles (or parts of articles) from the SHR material (as she did previously in Queensland), and we're just starting to be able to roll it out this week. Some of the articles are more useful than others, and I've been making judgment calls about how much to use in merges where we've already got an article, but Saumarez is a great example of one of their entries providing a wealth of information that would take an immense amount of work to replicate on our own. The WikiCup

I regret that as a WikiCup judge I have had to disallow your submission of Lucienne's Quest as a GAR in Round 3 because it was not completed or nominated before the close of the round on June 28th. I see that this may be critical as to whether you proceed to the next round or not, but it would not be fair to allow you to claim the points if it meant that another contestant was eliminated as a result. WikiCup 2018 July newsletter

The third round of the 2018 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round had at least 227 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

• Courcelles, a first time contestant, with 1756 points, a tally built largely on 27 GAs related to the Olympics
• Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with two featured articles and three GAs on natural history and astronomy topics
• SounderBruce, a finalist last year, with a variety of submissions related to transport in the state of Washington

Contestants managed 7 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 120 good articles, 1 good topic, 124 DYK entries, 15 ITN entries, and 132 good article reviews. Over the course of the competition, contestants have completed 458 GA reviews, in comparison to 244 good articles submitted for review and promoted. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process; several submissions, particularly in abstruse or technical areas, have needed additional work to make them completely verifiable.

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within

Hi, I just signed up to wikipedia and hopefully i'm posting this in the right place. I saw that you recently edited FF:TSW and thought you might be the person to approach with a possible correction. At the top of the movie's page, it's mentioned that The Spirits Within "remains the most expensive video game-inspired film of all time", however I don't think this is the case anymore, as the Warcraft movie's budget was $160m. Hi SirIcarus. Thanks for bringing this up. I've looked into it and you're right, the article does need to be updated, however it appears the Prince of Persia film cost even more than Warcraft. I've found a reliable reference that Prince of Persia is the most expensive film based on a video game and have updated this at the article. Hey, thanks for that. I've been having second thoughts about my correction, as I'm not sure how these things are best calculated. FF:TSW was made in 2001, whereas both Prince of Persia and Warcraft were released much more recently. Adjusting for inflation might change the results, but perhaps I'm just overcomplicating things. Eh, nevermind. Adjusted for inflation, The Spirit Within's budget would have been approx $168,777,807 in 2010, when Prince of Persia released. So PoP is likely still the most expensive. Though it doesn't help that the figures vary so much depending on where you look. Imdb says PoP cost $200m. Hi there Nomader. Thanks so much for offering to do this; I was starting to wonder if my nominations would ever be processed haha. Well in answer to your question, the DYK checks are the easiest, especially when they are supplied. I just check the links provided in the nomination table. People seem to either link to the actual DYK nomination or the credit for the DYK being given on their talk page. I find both of these acceptable; I have chosen the latter. With the GANs and FACs I also check the links provided to see the nomination. It's a requirement that the person worked significantly on the article (rather than just a fly-by nomination). Normally you can tell if the nominator worked on the article by skimming the nomination, however if there's any doubt obviously this can be checked with the article's revision history statistics. Also the person doesn't actually need to have initiated the nomination, they just have to be a major contributor, I just find in 98% of cases they are also the nominator. WikiCup 2018 September newsletter

The fourth round of the 2018 WikiCup has now come to an end. The eight users who made it to the final round had to score a minimum of 422 points to qualify, with the top score in the round being 4869 points. The leaders in round 4 were:

• Courcelles scored a magnificent 4869 points, with 92 good articles on Olympics-related themes. Courcelles' bonus points alone exceeded the total score of any of the other contestants!
• Kees08 was second with 1155 points, including a high-scoring featured article for Neil Armstrong, two good topics and some Olympics-related good articles.
• Cas Liber, with 1066 points, was in third place this round, with two featured articles and a good article, all on natural history topics.
• Other contestants who qualified for the final round were Nova Crystallis, Iazyges, SounderBruce, Kosack and Ceranthor.

During round four, 6 featured articles and 164 good articles were promoted by WikiCup contestants, 13 articles were included in good topics and 143 good article reviews were performed. There were also 10 "in the news" contributions on the main page and 53 "did you knows". Congratulations to all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Hi there, and thanks for your message. Contrary to your message, however, I did not give 'no reason' for deleting your addition; I clearly stated my reason was removing original research. I am going to try to explain why I removed it in more detail. Firstly, you've created an entire sub-section of an article entitled 'Controversy', yet the only source you've cited is MoJo's own article. If a section is titled "Controversy" it needs to filled with reliable sources of other people who have criticised MoJo, rather than just their original article and your interpretation of it. Please read WP:OR. You'e also gone out of your way to point things out to the reader, yet have provided no sources. For example, you state "The proposed solution is multi-pronged" and "this is unclear, as that would be outright censorship"; you'd need a source for that interpretation, and even then you'd need to attribute the opinion to someone and make sure it adheres to guidelines on due weight. Also your post contained numerous formatting issues (for example, see MOS:N'T) but that could have been easily fixed on its own and is not why I removed the information.

Using only the original MoJo article, you can't build a section like this. The only thing you can say using only the original article would be something like "In September 2018, Mother Jones published an article on XYZ", but even that would not be allowed as per WP:NOTNEWS. This is an encyclopedia article. It is supposed to cover the broad history or Mother Jones, not give interpretations or coverage ever time they publish an article. If you want to write entire paragraphs based on your interpretation on one article, you should start a blog. Please read Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not. I hope this clears up any confusion. It's Sheva, not Alomar

Unlike Wesker (who is "Wesker" and not "Albert"), it's Chris and Sheva (like the same with Claire, Ada, Rebecca, Barry, etc.). The word 'Alomar" is spoken only once or twice in the game ("Sheva" all the time - literally non-stop), designers talk about "Sheva", reviewers talk about "Sheva", and so forth, it's just Sheva for everyone and always expect maybe the oputsider 'racism/sexism researchers'. @SNAAAAKE!!: I understand the term Sheva is used much more frequently than Alomar, but that doesn't change the fact the Alomar is her last name. As per MOS:SURNAME, that's how we format names on Wikipedia. It's exactly the same for film plots. I was told to change all the instances of 'Chris and Sheva' to 'Redfield and Alomar' before Resident Evil 5 could become a good article. Someone who told you so must have been clueless. Her surname is just a trivia, practically no one uses "Alomar" and "Redfield" instead of Chris and Sheva. That's including the character's creators (which is important), and the game characters when talking to each other (and literally all the fans, but I'm not even talking about that). As I said, this article could be as well named just "Sheva (Resident Evil)" (the exact phrase which returns just 2 Google News hits, but opposed to 0 for "Alomar (Resident Evil)" because literally no one uses it, again maybe the the clueless so-called 'researchers', one of which would repeatedly write "Westker" instead of Wesker when accusing RE5 of imaginary racism becuase they have no idea about anything - and yet Sheva's article cites this complete nonsense for some reason - and btw, even this bullshit paper refers to Sheva as just "Sheva"). The article as for now is awkward and even misleading (especially since there's another RE "Redfield" - Claire, who is sometimes compred to Sheva and the others). So, as I said, Sophitia isn't a good article (whereas Sheva Alomar is, and RE5 is featured) so I think using that article is a very poor comparison.

I fail to see how the racism accusations are nonsense since multiple high-quality sources comment on them. The accusations exists, therefore the article should mention them, regardless of whether you or I agree with them.

The fact that you created the article means nothing. Please read WP:OWN.

We're going to have to agree to disagree regarding the surnames for reasons we've already stated. Do you or do you not want to raise the issue at Project Video Games and accept whatever consensus is reached there? I always accept consensus; I'm not going to allow you to go against what multiple GA reviewers and FAC reviewers have advised me to do at multiple video game articles without consensus from the project. The reviewers were simply wrong. It happens, people being clueless about things. The surname of Sheva is even (and much) less important than, for example, the surname the horror monster Jason (nominally "Jason Voorhees", and there is actually some importance to it due to his mother, but it's just Jason, including in his FA Jason Voorhees where "Jason" goes over 400 times and "Voorhees" less than 40). Now go and revert all the standalone Alomars (and Redfields) there, in RE5, and elsewhere. SNAAAAKE!! (talk) 12:03, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

And as for this just aggressively stupid so-called paper (the one with "Westker"): [2] It's like if the previous RE games were to be accused of "racism" by their also Japanese creators for the also stereotypically (and unintentionally silly, but the awkward campyness is what people love in RE) portrayed Americans and America where the "homogeneous" Raccoon City area "stands for the whole of America" because nothing else was shown, and in fact also the Spaniards and Spain (in RE4), and how the white zombies are "mindless, aggressive and bloodthirsty" and it's also a bad stereotype. Perhaps the most bafflingly absurd part is accusing Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness of these bad "stereotypes" too, where it's now a complete parody of modern ant-racism and "anti-colonial" activism (as opposed to Condrad's actual activism from the actual colonial era). Just race-baiting complete nonsense, if this is what goes as "high-quality source" it's just sad but also quite predictable (but sad nevertheless). SNAAAAKE!! (talk) 12:27, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

Your opinions on the source are irrelevant, as are my own. Criticism has been made from several sources that meet the standards set at WP:RS, therefore coverage of the criticism should appear in the article; you can't remove things on Wikipedia just because you disagree with them.

I've raised the issue of surnames at Project Video Games so a consensus can be reached. On Wikipedia we use consensus, we don't just sit back and let you bark orders at us, so I'm not going to "go and revert" all the changes before a consensus is reached. See, that wasn't very difficult was it? I have learnt something new from this experience, that despite what multiple people have told me we don't actually have to adhere to MOS:SURNAME in video games. Yes you already told me that but one opinion is not consensus; if I took one opinion as more important than all others I could have stuck with what my reviewers said and just ignored you. This is why consensus is important. Hopefully you can learn something from this too. As the other reviewer pointed out, just because someone has a different opinion from you does not mean that person needs to be insulted, and that just because you think something is obvious does not mean that is the case. I'll make the appropriate changes back at Sheva Alomar since I reverted your edits, but if you want it done anywhere else you'll have to do it yourself; I'm not going around all of Wikipedia reformatting things the way you like them. Triple crowns

Hi Damien. Many thanks for awarding me the two triple crowns. Appreciated. Is the triple crown now moribund? Is it a good idea whose time is past? If it does serve a purpose, I wouldn’t be adverse to putting in some work on a regular basis to keep it afloat and/or revitalise it. Thoughts? Gog the Mild (talk) 17:21, 21 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi Gog the Mild. The Triple Crown award has not been particularly active for many years now. It's certaintly declined from what it once was. In December 2014 I nominated myself for the Triple Crown, being the tenth person in line waiting for the award to be processed. In April the following year I checked back and not only had not a single one of the nominations been processed, the were an additional five people who had joined the queue. At that point I decided to take it upon myself to 'adopt' the award. Since 2015 I've processed at least 55 nominations; a handful of others including yourself have processed nominations during this time as well. The award is clearly not overly active, but I don't see any point of retiring it. I seem to be awarding Triple Crowns out at a rate of one a month or so and I'm happy to keep doing this. I'm open to revitalising and promoting it as well though. Last year someone posted a reminder to WikiProject Video games that the video game triple crown existed, which resulted in a couple more nominations for that. Reminders going out elsewhere would generate some more interest as well. Your message here has also prompted me to retire some of the older Triple Crowns, something I'd completely forgotten about; there was a consensus on the talk page that a couple of the awards should no longer be given out but I forgot to actually do anything about it till now. OK. Can you consider me signed up to keeping an eye on nominations and generally making irritating suggestions. Of which the first installment below.

• Any reason why the images are always on the right? It seems more aesthetically pleasing to me to centre them, as I just have with yours. (Feel free to move it back.)
• If we put {{-}} after the award it stops subsequent posts or comments from "creeping" up their sides. Note that your comment no longer does on your Triple Crown, but that posts do on your Precious, a few posts above.
• The award could perhaps do with a bit of a relaunch, maybe with a fresh look[?] Would you have an issue with Triple Crowns being in a similar format to barnstars? An auto-sizing banner across the screen with the image on the left - or perhaps on the right for tradition and "brand-differentiation?

Hi Gog the Mild. I'm happy with all those suggestions. There's no reason why the awards are aligned to the right. I'd say the only reason for that is they were copied and pasted from being aligned to the right at the awards page. I didn't know about the {{-}} code; I would have used it myself if I had of. Maybe we could add a place we could copy and past awards from that already has that code built into it, so other people copying it in the future will use it as well. I have no issues with reformatting the awards; I have no particular image editing/code formatting skills myself though. Were you thinking of doing this yourself?

@Vodkasosa: I'm not sure why RE7 is listed differently like that. The other question you have to ask yourself though is why would Capcom list steam sales for RE7 and not for the earlier games? That wouldn't make sense either. Why would they go out of their way to sell themselves short of a million sales? Every reliable source I've found does not add the Steam sales in addition to what is listed on the Capcom website (Example, see here [3], this source just gives the official Capcom figure) so I'm inclined to think Capcom has the right figures. WikiCup 2019 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2. With 56 contestants qualifying, each group in Round 2 contains seven contestants, with the two leaders from each group due to qualify for Round 3 as well as the top sixteen remaining contestants.

Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

• L293D, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with ten good articles on submarines for a total of 357 points.
• Adam Cuerden, a WikiCup veteran, came next with 274 points, mostly from eight featured pictures, restorations of artwork.
• MPJ-DK, a wrestling enthusiast, was in third place with 263 points, garnered from a featured list, five good articles, two DYKs and four GARs.
• Usernameunique came next at 243, with a featured article and a good article, both on ancient helmets.
• Squeamish Ossifrage was in joint fifth place with 224 points, mostly garnered from bringing the 1937 Fox vault fire to featured article status.
• Ed! was also on 224, with an amazing number of good article reviews (56 actually).

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews on 143 good articles, one hundred more than the number of good articles they claimed for, thus making a substantial dent in the review backlog. Well done all!

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

It's very simple, but it doesn't make sense to you because you don't understand fair use rationale. Please read Wikipedia:Non-free content. The short story is it is justifiable to have one copyrighted image under fair use guidelines, but not two. We already have one copyrighted image, so we're not allowed to have a second one. WikiCup 2019 May newsletter

The second round of the 2019 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to scored 32 points to advance into round 3. Our top four scorers in round 2 all scored over 400 points and were:

• Cas Liber (1210), our winner in 2016, with two featured articles and three DYKs. He also made good use of the bonus points available, more than doubling his score by choosing appropriate articles to work on.
• Kosack (750), last year's runner up, with an FA, a GA, two FLs, and five DYKs.
• Adam Cuerden (480), a WikiCup veteran, with 16 featured pictures, mostly restorations.
• Zwerg Nase (461), a seasoned competitor, with a FA, a GA and an ITN item.

Other notable performances were put in by Barkeep49 with six GAs, Ceranthor, Lee Vilenski, and Canada Hky, each with seven GARs, and MPJ-DK with a seven item GT.

So far contestants have achieved nine featured articles between them and a splendid 80 good articles. Commendably, 227 GARs have been completed during the course of the 2019 WikiCup, so the backlog of articles awaiting GA review has been reduced as a result of contestants' activities. The judges are pleased with the thorough GARs that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

I think it'll be OK as I only asked for comments from people who already expressed interest in seeing him topic banned, and you were the only person I queried as you commented at the thread but seemed to be neutral. A more general comment, a TBAN for video games may be unwarranted. His work on games directly tends to be fine for the most part. A more narrow TBAN on two other topics may be a useful step: 1) From character articles, broadly construed, and 2) From gender related articles, broadly construed. -- ferret (talk) 15:25, 2 July 2019 (UTC)

Comments re SNAAAAKE!

I am not fundamentally bothered about a topic ban or otherwise, but the incivil behaviour does need to be reviewed. Particularly his battleground tactics when it comes to discussions which makes anyone who isn't him at fault for the article and an opponent. Particularly his attempts to re-frame other people's arguments as ideological, and or misrepresent their innocent statements as inherently corrupt or somehow obtuse. I am not sure he is a native English speaker, so although his language is good, his nuance is often off kilter - so I give a lot more credit for that than perhaps I should. Unfortunately his habit of retroactively editing his comments out of order makes it difficult to identify any single diff with the highlighted behaviour ( much easier to just read the threads in question), and his failure to indent his replies makes for difficult following on threads of discussion, combined with his wall of text approach to replies makes it difficult to tackle each issue raised within any single coherent follow of response and replies. With a new user this would be understandable, but with a user with this level of experience to fail to do the bare minimum of common courtesy is disruptive at best, and wilfully disruptive otherwise. WikiCup 2019 July newsletter

The third round of the 2019 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round needed to score at least 68 points, which is substantially lower than last year's 227 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

• Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with 500 points derived mainly from a featured article and two GAs on natural history topics
• Adam Cuerden, with 480 points, a tally built on 16 featured pictures, the result of meticulous restoration work
• SounderBruce, a finalist in the last two years, with 306 points from a variety of submissions, mostly related to sport or the State of Washington
• Usernameunique, with 305 points derived from a featured article and two GAs on archaeology and related topics

Contestants managed 4 (5) featured articles, 4 featured lists, 18 featured pictures, 29 good articles, 50 DYK entries, 9 ITN entries, and 39 good article reviews. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them, and it is imperative to claim them in the correct round; one FA claim had to be rejected because it was incorrectly submitted (claimed in Round 3 when it qualified for Round 2), so be warned! When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.
