Yes please!

I would hope to find out the meaning of paying with edits... it seems 42 doesn't work in this case... and Yes... though i don't see any problem... except i have trouble using them... by the way... i'm supposing i would need to fix my sig... i'm on overload with this *--*$Marie*Night*Fox$* (talk) 17:40, 6 July 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by *$Marie*Night*Fox$* (talkcontribs)

Well, paying with edits is like this:
Lets say that you liked one of the clocks, then you add your self to the buyers list here, specifying what would you like and how. After that you posted your self (including your signature with the date), I´ll be checking your edits, and when you reach (for example) 8 major edits (after posting), I´ll deliver the item to your user space.
By the way, what do you mean by "it seems 42 doesn't work in this case..." and "except i have trouble using them"? - Damërung ...ÏìíÏ..._Ξ_ . --  18:06, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
NEVER MIND ABOUT THAT... but whaat are exactly major edits? *--*$Marie*Night*Fox$* (talk) 20:54, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
Edits not marked as minor edits are considered major or general edits. When you do a grammar or syntax correction in a page (like punctuation marks, changing letters, adding very few stuff, etc...), you mark that as a minor edit (in the little box below the 'edit' section). About your signature, i think the problem is that in your preferences, you have maked the slot "raw signature", that slot must not be marked unless you´re going to insert special code for the signature. Otherwise, just type your username there and uncheck the raw signature slot. - Damërung ...ÏìíÏ..._Ξ_ . --  21:09, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

Re:NODRAMA

I found it one day while skimming AN/I (ironically, in search of drama). Your new signature looks fine to me. a little insignificant 01:34, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Oh, and some food for thought- I've been reading The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy lately and noticed some similarities between the fictional guide and Wikipedia. What are your thoughts? a little insignificant 15:09, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
Well, I have been hearing about that Hitchhiker stuff lately. I didn´t even knew of its existence before some little time ago, and I haven´t read it, so which similarities did you found? (I hope I can find time to read it, and sorry for the delayed response). - Damërung . -- 22:38, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
It's a great book, and you should read it. But right now, here's some key quotes I selected from the book:
"In many of the more relaxed civilizations on the Outer Eastern Rim of the Galaxy, the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has already supplanted the great Encyclopedia Galactica as the standard repositry of all knowledge and wisdom."
"It had about a hundred tiny flat press buttons and a screen about four inches square on which any one of a million "pages" could be summoned at a moment's notice."
"If it were printed in normal book form, an interstellar hitchhiker would require several inconveniently large buildings to carry it around in."
This isn't a full, comprehensive study of the similarities, but do you see what I'm getting at? a little insignificant 02:34, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
Yes, indeed. I think i´m geting the hang of it. - Damërung . -- 03:44, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
Anyway, just something I was thinkin' bout. :D a little insignificant 02:39, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Re: Yours:

Hi Damërung, just wanted to say thank you, :-) That came as a very big surprise, and the day before my birthday, too!   Maedin\talk 13:59, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Hey! Happy post-birthday, I´m sorry I wasn´t here yesterday, but I´ve been a little busy, maybe that makes me made mistakes sometimes (for example in FPC's). p.s. I left you something in your talk page, I hope you like it. - Damërung . -- 08:58, 25 July 2009 (UTC)
-- 09:37, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
If my Spanish is that terrible, how could I be from Spain, :D And no, I am not, unfortunately. ¡Me gustaría ser español! Maedin\talk 09:43, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
Oh yes of course! It´s only that your speech (writing in this case) looked like spanish phrases modisms. I hope you had a very nice day during your birthday, and by the way, maybe you can find interesting the use of a shoutbox (like me). - Damërung . -- 09:49, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
I had a very rough day at work for my birthday, so it wasn't the greatest, no ;-) Plus, I turned 25 and now I feel old! I am afraid that people do not talk to me very often, so a shoutbox would almost never be used. Otherwise I might consider it. When I learned Spanish, my teacher used a dialect of Spain, so I may have picked up those habits from her. I say "cabetha" instead of "cabeza", for example. (P.S. I have your talk page watched, so you don't need to give me talkbacks.) Maedin\talk 09:57, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
Yes, my birthdays habe been like that recently... the cruel world of the adults  . (talkbacks lol!) Anyway, you don´t looke like you're 25, my first thought was that you were like 20 or 18. - Damërung . -- 10:09, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
That's a very nice thing to say, thank you! I wish I was still 20 ;-) Maedin\talk 18:46, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

FPC Closures

Thanks for taking an interest in closing FPC noms. One small issue though: don't close noms you've voted in (and especially ones you've nominated), even if the outcome is opposite to your hopes. Sometimes its necessary when something has sat for a really long time, or there's absolutely no one else to do it, but these circumstances are extreme, and an explanation is necessary. But again, thanks for the help! wadester16 18:40, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

Acknowledged. By the way, I just noticed that you don´t vote for nominations very often (perhaps almost never), and I was wondering why?... You should also form part of the quorum, I don´t see why someone who vote can´t close a candidate. - Damërung . -- 19:28, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
I don't often vote because if I do, I can't close the nom; it's a conflict of interest, especially if the !vote is the same as the outcome of the nomination. For a while, I was the only one closing noms and if I had voted, it would have left a large group of unclosed noms. wadester16 19:41, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
Well, I say you should vote anyway. Since the guideline of the page doesn´t mention it, I think it would be ok. Actually, I don´t see any conflict of interest (at least none that really makes a conflict), bacause no matter who closes the nomination as long as the rules are still followed, so as you see, this sounds very logical doesnt it? - Damërung . -- 15:10, 27 July 2009 (UTC)
Except for the case where it comes down to a close call; for that reason, the rule—which, while not written, but understood by closers—is in place to keep conflicts at a minimum. You can't predict which noms will be close, so you must assume they all will, and if you intend on closing, you must not vote. See this example, ongoing now. wadester16 15:24, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

If the condition for FP are met, then even if someone has a background interest is irrelevant. For example: Many of the recent nominations have the same user as the creator and nominator, and not only just one. It can be thinked that there´s a background interest here (like competing for the higher number of featured pictures nominated/created), but as well as when closing, it is just speculative and irrelevant, because if a picture deserves to be a featured one (by the community consensus), then other things does not matter.
Let me point it in another view: Even if an evil user someone is not taking neutrality and/or good faith, he cannot outrun the rules, and his actions would be taken as mere tools (since is not negatively affecting wikipedia).
So in conclusion:

  • A conflict must not be brought out of nowhere if it´s not needed.
  • Users editing here in FPC, must always take neutrality and good faith when voting or closing (which is not in the guidelines of this page because is implicit (in the wikiquette)).
  • Even if something is not accepted and a conflict is arised, it can always be discused and reverted (that´s why there´s the section: -recently closed nominations-).

So what do you think? - Damërung . -- 16:38, 27 July 2009 (UTC)
Me, posting my humble opinion

Yes, but close calls are a judgement call and you want the one making the judgement to be uninvolved. It's safe to assume any nom can end up being a judgement call, so you want to be uninvolved when closing. You can always bring this up at WT:FPC if you want more input. wadester16 16:53, 27 July 2009 (UTC)
P.S. No need for the {{tb}} templates, I'm watching your talk. :) wadester16 19:42, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Egotism

Oh Damërung, my great and wise mentor, I seek wisdom and counseling. In my greed, in my naive ambition, I have had... the thought. Oh woe is me! What should I do? A little insignificant talk to me! (please!) 12:15, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

Well, I myself have thought about this in the past, and I decided to stay as a non-admin because several reasons. First of all, I decided that there are a lot of things that I can do (and I want to do) before being an admin (and without the need to be one). Second, being an admin is not such a huge thing because it only gives you rights to work more intermally in wikipedia like protecting pages, deleting them or blocking users. I also thought that it could be time-consuming, but it actually isn't.
Those are reasons why I didn´t choose to nominate as admin (which may help you), now, If you want to become an admin, here are some tips:

\Damërung . -- 13:56, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

Of course I'm still into the academy!! I was missing it all the time your computer was bwoke and I was wondering why you still haven't updated it yet! Hmph.

Anyways, I've looked over the table you made. (thanks for going to all that that trouble, btw) I like the pros and I think I can deal with the contras. In my opinion, I've been dealing well with recent disputes and I think I could keep a cool head in disputes as an admin. On the other hand, the RFA processes I've seen struck me as synonymous with "fiery pit of mad wolves from hell". They seem to rely shockingly strongly on a user's number of edits. Is my impression wrong?

Either way, I should definitely gain some more experience first. 2000 < 93000. A little insignificant talk to me! (please!) 21:05, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

Help on creating a new article

Hi Damërung, I haven't been that active lately (work), but I have been doing research on an article I wanted to create. The article is a song off this album Trespass (album) it is "Looking for Someone" (song name) to create it. I was wondering if there were any tips you could give me or any other advice that I might need to do this. Thanks --The Windsor Help Desk (talk) 21:19, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

I see you want to create a new article. Well, there are some things that you should have in mind if you want to create an article:
References
Citing references in wikipedia is very important, this not only tells others where you acquired the information, but also makes the article more hard to be deleted. Remember, wikipedia must be the most reliable possible.
Importance
An article must have enough importance to be an article in wikipedia, in this case, it´s a band's song, and I don´t know much about it (but I´ll be looking forward). An article's lack of importance may lead it to be deleted.
Look in the academy
Lol. In my academy for adoptees I will be putting some new information (for u, further info regarding to this kind of matters).
Be bold!
The most important thing is being bold, you don´t have to worry if your first article is not good or is fastly requested for deletion (specially being my adoptee, because I´ll be watching and fixing possible mistakes). Any error can be fixed, and I can be helping you along the way.

Template Suggestion

Thank you for your comment on the template and yes I do think that would be a good idea but can you think of anything more valuable or rare than plutonium? If you can, I would be very grateful if you would let me know.

Regards, Gaelen S.Talk Contribs 03:23, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

Well, as far as I know, hafnium (one of it´s isotopes: 178Hf) is more expensive than plutonium. A gram of plutonium cost $4000 and a gram of hafnium 178 cost $1 million (as I know). It is also claimed in some internet sites that the aerogel is the most expensive material but I´m not sure of this. The only thing I´m sure is that even if the aerogel is the most expensive material, it´s definitely not the most expensive substance on Earth. - Damërung . -- 13:59, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, I will look into it.
Regards, Gaelen S.Talk Contribs 15:11, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
So what do you think? should Hafnium be the next material? - Damërung . -- 21:37, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

I think that it depends on what hafnium looks like and what the general consensus is. I looked at the article you listed and hafnium appears to be basically the color of graphite which I think could be confused with the iron star. If you have any ideas about how we could manipulate the color of hafnium to make it look a little different, I would all ears. - Regards, Gaelen S.Talk Contribs 05:52, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

Reply with an extended apology for not getting back to you sooner

First

Yay! I always like the acadamy, thanks for the new tips. The tips on Wikiquette and deep contributions are especially helpful, per the comments at my ongoing editor review. I'm going to try and work on a major rewrite of an article, if I can find one. Thanks for the admin tips, btw. I checked out some ongoing RFAs and was frightened considerably, but I'm wondering if I shouldn't apply sooner rather than later... hm.

Second

Woohoo! I didn't even know that existed. I'll put it in my awards. I'm going to have to create a new space for userboxes and stuff, too. On the other hand, I want to limit my userspace contributions... ugh, lots to worry 'bout. Oh well :D

Third

lololol

Fourth

Thank you! But again, see the userspace issue- I worry that I'm not making enough article contributions.

Fifth (?)

I'm worried about User:BigPadresDUDE. I'm impressed with his work as a new user, but he seems to feel that his contributions are too minor, and that everyone hates him. I can't convince him otherwise. Do you have any suggestions?

I think that covers it. A little insignificant Talk to me! (I have candy!) 15:40, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay, I was reading the stuff... About that list, yes, your table seems a little large, but I think (pehaps) maybe it could be better suited to be instead of the lead list. Therefore you´ll have more width for the table and you can also put the number of found species for each taxa (excuse me if my terminology is not correct, I´m not very used for these terms in english, but in spanish) including references for each one. - Damërung . -- 02:15, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
Sorry for my delay, but the origanl table (you can see in the diffs) was too large. But can you fix this one, some of the taxa are not showing. Bugboy52.4 | =-= 02:26, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
How about a collapsing one! This way the table can show up to the infraclass in a cheap space, then you click [show] for the orders. (I thought Thysanura was an order also, within the subclass Zygenthoma). By the way, what time is out there? I mean, What is the difference in timezones? - Damërung . -- 02:39, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
Sounds good thats why I choose you! :), well you are -5, and i'm -4 (thats why I wrote that) so here it's 10:42. Oh, can you show me first what it looks like on my sandbox (what about a scroll?). Bugboy52.4 | =-= 02:46, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

Re:Barnstar

Thank you! that was one of those barnstars that I really wanted! The only thing that i don't like about SVG, is that its a bit hard to make. Try using Inkscape (its FREE!) or Adobe Illustrator (not free, but you can try a hack with torrent download), which is better. The only thing with inkscape is that it takes a while to get use to, and it freezes lafter a long time of use, so save often, you have been warned (might not happen on your computer). Actually, I drew a nice picture of a Sunburst Diving Beetle for the article, and it froze! :'[. Good luck! Bugboy52.4 | =-= 19:19, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

No, you would have to completely redo the image, or use trace bitmap, but then it will look bad. Even redoing images is hard if they are like pictures with a lot if detail. The easiest would be simple and solid pictures like cartoons and icons. Bugboy52.4 | =-= 19:47, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
Well if you have any, I can see what I can do. Bugboy52.4 | =-= 19:58, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
I have been working on typography, either creating articles, doing cleanup work and/or uploading images for the typeface where is missing. The images I´ve created are in JPG format, and have a bad quality. I have already been taging them with the apropriate template for SVG conversion, and I´ll try to upload them as SVG when I can, but I was wondering if the existing ones can be easily switched to SVG... The ones I´ve been working with are in the Samples of serif typefaces, the first ones (can be noted by the quality). - Damërung . -- 20:12, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
So you want me to change all those pictures to svg? Bugboy52.4 | =-= 12:15, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Can you? (I mean: can you switch them, or the pictures have to be remade completely whole?). - Damërung . -- 20:14, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
I would have to remake them completely, but it's not to hard because they are solid colors, I'll see if I can get to it tonight. Bugboy52.4 | =-= 20:17, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

Maybe they are doing it because they don't know anything about fonts and think Hobo is a joke. It is very serious. The article does need to be expanded. Hi Balloon Boy (talk) 21:08, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

Collaboration vs. Project?

How is a collaboration different from a project?

I have worked a bit on the list of articles without an importance assigned, and learned a bit about the various typeface articles. It seems to me that there may have been a change in the Infobox fonts template which makes some article infoboxes display incorrectly. --DThomsen8 (talk) 01:22, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

A collaboration is an specific job about some subject. While the wikiproject works toward discussing and improving a whole series of things related to the same kind, a collaboration focus on a directly particular thing more actively. In fact, the collaboration is not different from the wikiproject, but a branch of it (like Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Logistics is a branch (different type of branch, but a branch) of the Wikipedia:MHWP). Some collaborations (like that example) have the name of the wikiproject like: Wikipedia:WikiProject France/Collaboration, and some other not, like: Wikipedia:Macintosh collaboration (branch of WP:MAC). The name can be changed if needed, but its not neccesary or important either way. - Damërung . -- 08:26, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

Ah, I thought it was being clever and detecting that I had replied to you again. OrangeDog (τε) 19:29, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

Importing bot conversation for future references

I see that your bot updates that section each 3 hours, but I was wondering to ask you a couple things:

  1. Where does this bot takes the tasks? ...I know it´s random, but how it identifies any?
  2. Can that section be updated manually? ...I mean: will the bot erase your change within three hours?

- Damërung . -- 08:41, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

  1. The bot identifies its tasks from a bunch of categories that contain all articles that have been tagged a certain way (i.e. Category:All pages needing to be wikified, Category:All articles needing copy edit etc). It accesses these tasks by performing a SQL query on a copy of the EnWiki database stored on the Toolserver.
  2. The sections of the open task page surrounded by <span id="name-here></span> tags will be overwritten by the bot every three hours, but the rest of the page can be changed by anyone.
Hope these answers have helped. ~fl 09:20, 19 October 2009 (UTC)
Are stub articles (category) also listed in the bot´s 'considering bag' of tags? ...And well, which are the listed tags that the bot considers (if can be listed)? - Damërung . -- 12:28, 19 October 2009 (UTC)
Getting the stub list uses different logic to all the other lists. Categories are randomly selected from Category:Stub categories and then articles are selected from there (from memory).
The categories the bot looks at are:
  1. Category:All pages needing to be wikified
  2. Category:All articles needing copy edit
  3. Category:Wikipedia articles in need of updating
  4. Category:All articles needing style editing
  5. Category:All pages needing cleanup
  6. Category:All pages needing factual verification
  7. Category:All NPOV disputes
  8. Category:All articles that may contain original research
  9. Category:All articles to be merged
  10. Category:All articles to be split
  11. Category:All articles to be expanded
If you can understand the Python programming language, a copy of the bot's source code written in that language can be found in my Toolserver SVN repository. ~fl 23:33, 19 October 2009 (UTC)
12. would be articles of a stub sub-category right? - Damërung . -- 07:12, 25 October 2009 (UTC)
Yes. ~fl 11:38, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

Template:Font list item

I've reverted your tests. As example 1 is supposed to be just the font name, the image size is based on the height, not the width. If it were based on the width, as it used to be, all the examples appear in different point sizes. The only reason some examples are too small is because they are not the correct kind of example. OrangeDog (τε) 19:32, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

Yes, Iknow. Now, example 1 (column 2) is not supposed to be just the font name (that´s why there is a column 1), it was big so the font can be apreciated better. Being in different point sizes isn´t something wrong. And, for example: the Antiqua typeface has too small images (both of them); the one on the right may not be the apropriate, but what can possibly make the one in the left not the correct one? - Damërung . -- 15:43, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
Firstly, if there's no point to the first example, other than looking nice, it should be removed. Secondly, try replacing the "Antiqua" example with a proper SVG version and you will see a dramatic improvement. OrangeDog (τε) 19:19, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
The point in the first images is not 'looking nice', but let someone to look clearly at the font´s details and characteristics (apreciate better the font), which is something very encyclopedic. Still, some samples in svg format are still too small like Gentium. Others are larger like Palatino, but they used to be bigger. So, shouldn´t 199px (or similar) be fair enough? Also, there´s nothing wrong if some have more than one row. - Damërung . -- 20:05, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
If they wish to appreciate them in more detail, they can click on them, and if they're SVGs, they can zoom in as much as they wish. You cannot set these images by width. If you want them to be larger, then just increase the height. Doing this also allows you to compare the typefaces for their relative size, instead of having each in a random size. Also, your obsession with 199px is puzzling; what is wrong with 200px? Double-row images can be handled with an extra parameter in the template. OrangeDog (τε) 20:16, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
First of all, I do not have an obsession with 199px, for me it´s fine any other size as long as the details can be seen, second, the large images displaying the font name allow to apreciate details in the same page without having to be clicking to each one. And what do you mean by relative size? (they doesn´t have to have the same size all standarized). It is that extra parameter in the template which I want to fix this. Is this parameter what you mean by "increasing height" or were you talking about something else? - Damërung . -- 20:25, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

Re: Specialty

Hi, sorry for the late reply! I don't think I have any specific speciality in Wikipedia in terms of categories etc (though I do tend to read more entertainment/music/TV type articles, so I'm more likely to edit them). Really though, I tend jump from random articles correcting grammar, spelling and typos, making sure even the tiniest thing conforms with Wiki guidance and suggestions. :) londonsista Prod 02:13, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

2. ([[Rollerblade|Lollerblading! Swish swish, chop chop.) Thanks! I'll check the academy later, when I get a chance[citation needed].

3. I'm not mad at you, in fact I made I little cardboard cutout of your userpage that I could shout at when I felt lonely. (Just kidding, no harm done.)

4. You've got a great idea. I've thought about the WikiCup before, but I never entered because a.)I felt it was too long and b.)I would be competing against users like Juliancolton and Durova, who each have over twenty featured articles to their name. I have too much respect for them to crush them in a public competition. :)

5. I really should get some archiving done. I have received multiple hints and suggestions about this, to which my response has generally been along the lines of, "Yeah... I guess." A little insignificant Giving thanks to all that is me 22:04, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

What I've been working on

Oh, before I start my break for real I though I'd tell you about what I'm working on nowadays. I've been:

  • New page patrolling on using Twinkle, tagging some articles for CSD and expanding others. I started around the same time as WP:NEWT came up, and this is a major source of my stress. Special:Newpages has an unpatrolled backlog stretching back to October 22. That's thousands of articles that need to be patrolled. It's an absolutely massive job. I feel that those involved in WP:NEWT could do more to reduce this problem instead of... well, anyway.
  • Trying to create a working status page without much success. Sort of like the one on other people's pages, like Bugboy's. It would be useful because it would allow me to quickly tell people if I was online or not. But I'm confused, how do you make a system so the wording is automatically changed to red if I change my status to "offline"? And green for online, etc.

As I'm writing this I feel that I need to say that all this time you've been a really great mentor, and a really great friend. You're the person I can come to if I have a problem, and the fact that you'll help me through it means a lot to me. I've learned stuff from the academy that I couldn't learn anywhere else on the wiki. And you've put so much time and work into it, it's just absolutely amazing. I'm not leaving or anything, but I wanted to thank you now. My only regret is that as I explore and get involved in other parts of the wiki, I don't see you as much.

Sorry, I rambled. Anyway. A little insignificant Giving thanks to all that is me 13:25, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

I´ll be on the road right away, It looks like it was me the one who took that wikibreak afterall. And about the NEWT, well, they aim to prevent easy deletion of pages created by new users (sort of), sometimes a new page that doesn´t seem promising, can anyway become a good article over the time, or be deleted eventually (not speedy) and merge the information into another one. If this doesn´t help, then I guess I didn´t get what is happening between you and the NEWT team but, of course, I´ll be open to discuss this and see what´s going on. Regards! - Woglinde 02 (talk) 02:41, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

2010 WikiCup Signups Reconfirmation!

To ensure that everyone who signed up is still committed to participating in the 2010 WikiCup, it is required that you remove your name from this list! By removing your name, you are not removing yourself from the WikiCup. This is simply a way for the judges to take note of who has not yet reconfirmed their participation. If you have not removed your name from that list by December 30th, 2009 (by 23:59 (UTC)) then your name will be removed from the WikiCup.

It's worth noting the rules have changed, likely after you signed up. The changes made thus far are:

  • Mainspace and/or portal edits will not be awarded points at all.
  • Did you know? articles (which were worth 5 points last year) will now be worth 10 points.
  • Good articles (which were worth 30 points last year) will now be worth 40 points.
  • Valued pictures will be now awarded points, however the amount (5 or 10 points) is still being discussed.
  • Featured lists (which were worth 30 points last year) will now be worth 40 points.
  • Featured portals (which were worth 25 points last year) will now be worth 35 points.
  • Featured articles (which were worth 50 points last year) will now be worth 100 points.
  • Featured topics (which were worth 10 points per article last year) will now be worth 15 points per any article in the topic that you were a major contributor to.
  • Good topics (which were worth 5 points per article last year) will now be worth 10 points per any article in the topic that you were a major contributor to.
  • In the news will still be awarded points, however the amount (5 or 10 points) is still being discussed.

If you have any final concerns about the WikiCup's rules and regulations, please ask them now, before the Cup begins to avoid last minute problems. You may come to the WikiCup's talk page, or any of the judge's user talk pages. We're looking forwards to a great 2010 WikiCup! It has been exactly 18 days since you last graced Wikiedia with your presence. I don't know if you have left, or will return some day with a new computer. But I miss you and the Academy, and I am sad. I don't know if this is goodbye, but I have a confession to make.

Last chance to confirm your WikiCup participation!

Hi Damërung! This is the last message that will go out to remind you that in order to participate in the 2010 WikiCup, you MUST remove your name from this list! Again, the reason for this reconfirmation is to ensure you've looked over the updated point values (which were different at the time you signed up) and to ensure that you are still interested in competing! If you don't have time to participate or no longer wish to, ignore this message and leave your name on the list. All names on the list will be removed from the contestants list before the Cup starts. Cheers! iMatthew talk at 14:16, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

I already removed me from the list (within the time limit as specified here), but I´m not in the wikicup. Does that mean a mistake or something? Can I still be in? - Woglinde 02 (talk) 02:41, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

The member list is meant to provide a clearer picture of active membership. It is recommended that you update your status if you plan to regularly:

Members listed in the "Unknown" section will be removed from the membership list and category at the end of January 2010. You may re-add yourself to the active list at any time. Thank you for your help, and we look forward to working with you.

Repile

First

  • New page patrolling was a little while ago. Since then, WP:NEWT has been discontinued (see its talk page) and I haven't done a lot of CSD work since then. Mostly because I was informed a few weeks ago that my mainspace article edits took up less than 40% of my total. That scared me a bit. And Bugboy helped me with my status problems (see above) but I still can't understand how to change the color automatically, which is sad. Will work on that.

Second

  • Sadness in a burrito! What happened to your account this time? Hope you can get it fixed soon...

Third

  • Ugh, fine. I'll just... go and get an archive template then. Humph! Nobody at school has an archive box, why do I have to have one?! I like it like this!! (Warning:Previous sentence may be mildly or wildly untrue)

Fourth IhateyouIhateyouIhateyou!!!! (see above footnote)

Fifth Hmm. I know what you mean about the tips- very few of them are redundant, all of them are useful, but some of them are tips that are specific to things that I'm not currently working on, and so I don't end up using them at that moment. Maybe if they became more focused on things?... I don't know, what do you think?

Sixth Done and done! And done! And again done! ALI nom nom 17:34, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

You shouldn´t worry about your edit ratio (26% userspace, 40% this, 15% that...), that's not such a big deal. As long as you contribute to wikipedia anyhow, it´s all great (article namespace is important of course). By the way, my account if fine, it´s just that for the moment I can only use public computers... I´ll get mine back soon. About the tips, well, I always try to make them useful for any sort of thing that you could be currently doing (for example in the welcoming, the page protection, the categorizing, personal attacks, etc...) while other are suggestion on things that you could so (like WP:FIC, tables, collaborations, etc...). Anyway, what do you mean by "focused on things"? and... oh yes, I´ll add some more that I consoder useful at this moment. - Woglinde 02 (talk) 01:04, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
Well that's good then. Thanks. About the tips, I meant what if you sort of narrowed them down to be relevant a certain area that I was working on? Though looking over it, I'm not sure if I've really picked an area to specialize in... hmm. ALI nom nom 01:31, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Hi!! Happy you got your account back! I stopped by because I just realized why my article space edit count is so low and my user talk edit count is so high!

Because of all my CSD work, when I tagged a page with Twinkle it automatically did one edit to the article (tagging it for csd) and another to the talk page of the creator (notifying them). Then when the article was deleted, so were my edits to the article, but my edits to their talk page still exist! I'm an asset after all!! WOO!

Uh... anyway. Just wanted to tell somebody that. ALI nom nom 17:23, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

Well, those three tips I added were just appetizers, I didn´t really added what I meant to add, but I´ll do it soon, excusing for the delay. - Damërung . -- 07:36, 10 January 2010 (UTC)
Yay! Thanks for the academy update, the tip about link shortcuts is a godsend. And I'm thinking of joining CVU and maybe raising some questions at UW. About the <code> formatting, so does it work like the <nowiki> code except with a gray border? Sounds useful. (I notice can't enclose the <code> format inside itself... sad.) ALI nom nom 16:33, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

Code strings

Yes, that string works te same way as the <nowiki> (both are wikimarkup), but the difference is not only the background highlighting. While the <nowiki> cancels the functions of other markups (such as itself or <code> or <font color...>), the code serves only to display the text as if it were computer code (really nothing very special), but it serves to diferentiate the code from normal text more easily. In other words, if you type &amp;euml; the code will still be there, but it will look like normal text. The "&amp;" is the thing that does the main trick. Besides, special characters may not be wikimarkup technically. - Damërung . -- 16:57, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

I think I get it. So <code> by itself doesn't cancel the function of the markup, it just helps to highlight the code but you have to cancel it some other way, using &amp or <nowiki>. Is that right? ALI nom nom 17:07, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
Yes, but while the <nowiki> cancels the wikitext only, it won´t cancel the special characters, they will work anyway unless you put the &amp;. Try typing this: <nowiki>&euml;</nowiki> and see what happens. - Damërung . -- 17:14, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
"ë" Ah! Now I understand. Thanks! :) ALI nom nom 18:15, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

Re:Message on the featured picture candidates page

Just place it in the text/instructions somewhere. A box is somewhat intrusive. J Milburn (talk) 12:13, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

What do you mean by intrusive? Anyway, the idea of placing it as a box is to actually atract more quorum, if I place the sentence in the text or instructions, not many users will notice it (in fact, I would say that a very few). I already proposed that in the talk page before doing the change, so if you got any better idea, I´ll be pleased to hear it. - Damërung . -- 00:55, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
I appreciate and support the intention of the box, I just do not feel that it is the way to progress. Talk pages, see alsos, instructions and stuff like that are the places to go, really- boxes like the one you added have no place outside the userspace. J Milburn (talk) 01:00, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
Yes, but all those areas will not attract much attention. If we place something there, few editors will see it. The way I think it, boxes should not be in mainspace, but what about wikipedia namespace? I don´t see any problem, specially if it helps. I shrinked the box and change the colors to make it less extravagant or inapropriate to the likes of others. What do you think? Is there any other better way than a box? - Damërung . -- 01:44, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
You're kind of missing the point here. Yes, it would be nice if VPC got a couple more views, but it's really not worth that ridiculous box- it's only going to turn people off the project if you treat it as something different. If it is advertised in the same way as other processes, it will be treated as a legitimate process. If it's advertised in an intrusive and unpleasant way, people will ignore it. Think about it. J Milburn (talk) 02:17, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
......... I just don´t get your piont (I don´t find unpleasant the box (it could be changed to be more pleasant if yoou like), and I can´t see why it will turn people off the project). Just to clarify: I don´t care much about the box, any other way would be ok by me as long as something is done to improve. Either way, I´m always open to suggestions. - Damërung . -- 03:24, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 January newsletter

We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. We've had some shakeups regarding late entries, flag changes and early dropouts, but the competition is now established- there will be no more flag changes or new competitors. Congratulations to   Sasata (submissions), our current leader, who, at the time of writing, has more listed points than   Hunter Kahn (submissions) and   TonyTheTiger (submissions) (second and third place respectively) combined. A special well done also goes to   Fetchcomms (submissions)- his artcle Jewel Box (St. Louis, Missouri) was the first content to score points in the competition.

Around half of competitors are yet to score. Please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. 64 of the 149 current competitors will advance to round 2- if you currently have no points, do not worry, as over half of the current top 64 have under 50 points. Everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places in round 2! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, by email or on IRC. Good luck! WikiCup 2010 February newsletter

Round one is over, and round two has begun! Congratulations to the 64 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our first round. A special well done goes to   Sasata (submissions), our round one winner (1010 points), and to   Hunter Kahn (submissions) and   TonyTheTiger (submissions), who were second and third respectively (640 points/605 points). Sasata was awarded the most points for both good articles (300 points) and featured articles (600 points), and TonyTheTiger was awarded the most for featured topics (225 points), while Hunter Kahn claimed the most for good topics (70).   Staxringold (submissions) claimed the most featured lists (240 points) and featured pictures (35 points),   Geschichte (submissions) claimed the most for Did you know? entries (490 points),   Jujutacular (submissions) claimed the most for featured sounds (70 points) and   Candlewicke (submissions) claimed the most for In the news entries (40 points). No one claimed a featured portal or valued picture.

Credits awarded after the end of round one but before round two may be claimed in round two, but remember the rule that content must have been worked on in some significant way during 2010 by you for you to claim points. The groups for round two will be placed up shortly, and the submissions' pages will be blanked. This round will continue until 28 April, when the top two users from each group, as well as 16 wildcards, will progress to round three. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup; thank you to all doing this last round, and particularly to those helping at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, by email or on IRC. Good luck! We're half way through round two, and everything is running smoothly.   Hunter Kahn (submissions) leads overall with 650 points this round, and heads pool B.   TonyTheTiger (submissions) currently leads pool C, dubbed the "Group of Death", which has a only a single contestant yet to score this round (the fewest of any group), as well five contestants over 100 points (the most). With a month still to go, as well as 16 wildcard places, everything is still to play for. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Although unrelated to the WikiCup, April sees a Good Article Nominations backlog elimination drive, formulated as a friendly competition with small awards, as the Cup is. Several WikiCup contestants and judges have already signed up, but regular reviewers and those who hope to do more reviewing are more than welcome to join at the drive page. If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Adoption

Hi Damërung,

I've started to clean up the Adopters' list. You appear to appear to have been editing only sporadically in the last months. I wonder if you're still interested in adopting new users. If you're not interested any more, would you mind removing yourself? Thank you and happy editing, Snowolf How can I help? 11:09, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks!
