Happy Birthday!!

Happy 16th birthday, cymru lass! Have a great day!   Set Sail For The Seven Seas 15° 30' 30" NET 01:02, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

Holy expletive, it's my birthday!

I happened upon this page and learnt it's your birthday. I don't think we've met before, but just to spread the Wikilove: Happy Birthday! Heimstern Läufer(talk) 07:57, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
Why thank you, kind stranger! Aside from a friend who stayed up 'til midnight for me, no-one off-wiki has mentioned it yet. Then again, it is something like 2 AM....  --- cymru lass (hit me up)(background check) 08:01, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
Hey yeah - Happy Birthday from another Dr Who fan! Now you need more than a nibble to store your age! Graeme Bartlett (talk) 08:47, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, Graeme! This is all very pleasant.   This was actually the first thing I saw upon waking up due to forgetting to turn my laptop off! --- 14:02, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

Hope I'm not late already  ; however, buon compleanno from me too! Salvio Let's talk about it! 23:47, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
@TheSevenSeas, yes, I managed to forget it was my birthday   I'm special like that. But it made it all that much better!
@the wub, thank you! I'd say thanks in Welsh, but I'm afraid I lack any knowledge whatsoever of the language, except "cymru". I won't get the chance to start learning for a few years
@Salvio, HI! Long time no talk! Thanks for the birthday wishes!! I love Italian (don't let my Spanish homies hear me saying that; they'll kill me :P)!   You're definitely not too late, at least by my clock! --- cymru lass (hit me up)(background check) 00:38, 2 November 2010 (UTC)
I believe "thanks" in welsh is "diolch". There's always The Welsh Wikipedia if you're up for learning the language. Spanish and Italian are very similar languages, so it shouldn't be too bad. Forgetting does indeed make it that more special! Suprises are great!  Set Sail For The Seven Seas 16° 13' 45" NET 01:04, 2 November 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the Welsh tip !   Hahaha, the fact that Italian and Spanish makes the playful rivalry between my Spanish and Italian friends all the more "serious".  --- cymru lass (hit me up)(background check) 01:09, 2 November 2010 (UTC)
No problem! I take it you're the inbetween? Someone's got to prevent World War III!   Set Sail For The Seven Seas 256° 5' 0" NET 17:04, 2 November 2010 (UTC)
Hahaha yep! I'm the gringa who speaks Spanish better than several of the Latinas and used to speak Italian   --- cymru lass(hit me up)(background check) 02:20, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
All that and to think Italy and Spain don't even share a border!   I guess you should learn French then!   Set Sail For The Seven Seas 321° 8' 15" NET 21:24, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
Yep, I'm taking it next year—despite the fact that the French accent is the only accent I can't imitate. I can even do accents when reading (Romanized) Arabic and Hindi, but when I try to read French, I sound like a strangled cat   --- cymru lass (hit me up)(background check) 01:03, 4 November 2010 (UTC)
It takes time and practice to develop these things unless you've grown up with it. In that case, it becomes second nature. Can you actually read Arabic and Hindi? That's way better than French!   Set Sail For The Seven Seas 325° 37' 15" NET 21:42, 4 November 2010 (UTC)
I can't read or understand Arabic and Hindi, but if I'm given a written-out (i.e., in the Roman alphabet) transliteration, I can do a passable accent. I pick up accents really easily—which isn't always a good thing. I spent 3 weeks in New Zealand almost five years ago, and I still speak with a en-zedder intonation and use their slang—which confuses the heck out of people, especially since I don't speak with an accent   ---cymru lass (hit me up)(background check) 23:54, 4 November 2010 (UTC)
That could come in useful at times! One of my friends is a kiwi, so I sort of know some of the slang. Do you really sound like a strangled cat when you try to read French? It can't be that bad!   You know what a strangled cat sounds like?   All I've ever heard are cats squealing at one another! Now that's what you call a cat fight!   Set Sail For The Seven Seas 3° 31' 30" NET 00:14, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
Well, I don't know what a strangled cat sounds like per se, but I'm guessing it's pretty close to me speaking French. I was in a French opera once (Carmen), and it took me forever to make sure I didn't sound like a fool! --- cymru lass (hit me up)(background check) 00:36, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

I didn't think so.   I would be surprised if you did.   Isn't that going round in circles? If you were in a French opera, then you must have a good accent!   Set Sail For The Seven Seas 14° 10' 45" NET 00:56, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

Lucky for me, opera singers use softer accents than the typical Fresh accent when singing opera, at least where I live.   --- cymru lass(hit me up)(background check) 01:44, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
I guess in that case you can get away with it!   If you did end up in a real French opera, then you'd have to try even harder!   Set Sail For The Seven Seas 267° 1' 45" NET 17:48, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
Hahaha, true that! --- cymru lass (hit me up)(background check)23:06, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

November 2010 backlog elimination drive update

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

We have reached the midway point in our backlog elimination drive, so here is an update.

Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join!

Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive.

Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. Thanks very much for participating in the Drive, and see you at the finish line!

Category:CSI: NY episodes

Hi there, I noticed your note at Category talk:CSI: NY episodes when I was going through empty categories to delete, as it's empty again. Considering what you wrote I'm wondering if it was improperly emptied. Since you are clearly more familiar with the situation than me, I'd appreciate it if you could look in to this and either repopulate the category, or tag it with a C1 speedy, depending on what you find. Thanks, VegaDark (talk) 04:22, 15 November 2010 (UTC)

Erm, I should probably preface this by saying I've never watched CSI.
That said, my main issue with the deletion is the reason the category wasn't populated was because its members were redirected without consensus. This caused a lot of outcry, but apparently, some of the redirected articles were never reverted. Lists of the CSI:NY episodes can be found at Template:Infobox CSI: NY season 1 episode list, etc. I actually have no clue what to do with them! --- cymru lass (hit me up)(background check) 08:40, 15 November 2010 (UTC)

November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive Conclusion

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

We have reached the end of our fourth backlog elimination drive. Thanks to all who participated.

Stats

GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive graphs
  • 58 people signed up for this drive. Of these, 48 people participated in the drive.
  • Although we did not eliminate the months we planned to (January, February, and March 2009; and August, September, and October 2010), we did reduce the backlog by 627 articles (11.2%), which was over our goal of 10%.
  • 49 awards will go out to 33 of 48 participants. Check out the complete list of barnstar winners here.

Barnstars

If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you participated in the September 2010 backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here). These roll-over words count as credit towards earning barnstars, except for leaderboard awards. We will be delivering these barnstars within the next couple of weeks.

Our next drive is scheduled for January 2011. In the meantime, please consider helping out at the Wikification drive or any of the other places where help with backlogs is needed.

Thank you for participating in the last 2010 backlog elimination drive! We look forward to seeing you in January!

I apologize. I wasn't, in fact, being snarky. I occasionally patrol the categories of requested edits to see if any requests have been made in error (e.g., changes have been requested to an unprotected page). I then use either {{EsP}} or {{EP}} to let the people know that the page is, in fact unprotected. Next time I'll check to see when a page was last unprotected. Again, I apologize for the misunderstanding. --- cymru.lass (hit me up)(background check) 20:13, 28 December 2010 (UTC)

It's time to get back up to speed...

Happy Holidays.

I noticed that you are listed as a participant in the outlines wikiproject.

Things went pretty slow from Oct 2009 to Sept 2010, but have been picking up speed since October 2010.

Overhauls are under way on:

We can use all the help we can get on those. They especially need annotations and missing links. Please take a look and see what you can do.

One of the big gaps we've been working on is sports. So far, we have:

The outlines listed above include descriptive annotations to aid in topic selection. Please add as many missing annotations as you can.

You may have noticed some major sports are missing:

If you are feeling ambitious, please feel free to build one or more of these.

But don't feel restricted to sports. There are many other major subjects we haven't gotten to yet. See Portal:Contents/Outlines to look for gaps.

To assist in the maintenance (such as spotting and reversing vandalism) of the outlines and their support pages, please watchlist them. At a minimum, please watchlist the support pages:

The wikiproject page has been overhauled. It includes tasks, guidelines, and a participants list.

We need your help. Please look over the project and the various outlines to see where you can contribute the best. Thank you.

What are your favorite subjects?

Happy New Year!

Edit on Fred Heron

I had posted that as I had received a phone call from a fellow friend, who had worked with Fred in the California Youth Authority as his Teacher's Assistant for many years, and had studied the bible with Fred's wife, Betty. I am a dear and personal friend of Fred, and this is personal information from family. He collapsed about a week prior. We still do not know how he died. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kaivarri (talkcontribs) 05:45, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

Please re-read the discussion that you started on Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard: It stated "Someone being alive or dead is a fact that must be reliably sourced". When you explicitly add him back to the category of "Living persons" without a source, you are breaking this policy. Please do not revert my edit of removing that category again unless you can demonstrate via sources that he is alive (which you can't, because he isn't). --Roger McCoy/រ៉ាចើ (talk) 08:34, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

The Count Of Monte Cristo (James Behr musical)

Thanks for your note about this page. I don't think this musical is notable (it failed a previous AFD). James Behr may be notable, I haven't looked close enough to say one way or the other. If you think he merits an entry, please feel free to move or merge the relevant material, but note that this is almost certainly an autobiography or a very close conflict of interest, complete with legal threats about attempts to remove it. I prefer not to facilitate these sorts of editors, so I've limited my action so far to cutting out junk from the entry. Cheers. Hairhorn (talk) 23:29, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

GOCE drive news

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 backlog elimination drive

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! The drive is halfway over, so here are some mid-drive stats.

Participation

GOCE January 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

So far, 43 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 25 have participated. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now.

Progress report

We have eliminated two months from the backlog – January and February 2009. One of our goals is to eliminate as many months as possible from the 2009 backlog. Please help us reduce the size of this part of the backlog if you haven't already. Another goal is to reduce the entire backlog by 10%, or by 515 articles. Currently, we have eliminated 375 articles from the queue, so if each participant copy edits four more articles, we will reach that goal.

Thank you for participating in the January 2011 drive. We anticipate it will be another big success!

GOCE January Backlog elimination drive conclusion

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive

Greetings from the January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! We have reached the end of the month and the end of another successful drive; thanks to all who participated.

Statistics
  • 54 people signed up for the year's first Backlog elimination drive. Of these, 40 participated.
  • One of our goals was to reduce the size of the backlog by at least 10%. We managed to reduce the backlog by 633 articles, or about 12%.
  • Another goal was to eliminate as many 2009 months as possible from the queue. We eliminated January, February, March, and April—4 out of 12 months is not bad! In addition, we eliminated 37% of all remaining 2009 articles from the queue.
  • Chaosdruid copy edited Kutch Gurjar Kashtriya for 32,711 words, which is the largest single article completed in one of our drives so far. This article counts as six 5000-K articles, and Chaosdruid wins the "most 5000-K articles" leaderboard category. Way to go! A complete list of individual results is here.
Barnstars

If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you participated in the November 2010 Backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here). These roll-over words count as credit towards earning barnstars, except for leaderboard awards. We will be delivering the barnstars within the next couple of weeks.

Outline collaboration

Here's the latest addition to the religion section of Portal:Contents/Outlines. Wikipedia has rich coverage on this subject. Very interesting, especially from sociological and historical perspectives.

This is a call to all members of the Outline WikiProject and outline aficionados to help refine this outline. It needs annotations, missing topics added, and the entries in the general concepts section placed in more specific sections. It needs your editing skills. Let's turn it into a beehive!

Come join in on the fun and get acquainted with members of the Outline WikiProject.

The Transhumanist 04:58, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

P.S.: I had no idea this religion was so extensive or that it had so many followers. Hope to see you on the outline!

What is a symbol?

I have no objection to your recent edit to Coordinated Universal Time but I disagree with the edit summary: "Symbol: okay, how's initialism? a symbol is something like $, %, ^, or ®". If you look at the brochure which sets forth the International System of Units and which has been adopted as law in most countries (perhaps with minor variations and translation into the local language) you will find that certain letter combinations are defined to be symbols when used to designate units of measure (e.g. m, s, MJ, mg). In the case of UTC, this letter group seems to have evolved in a more informal manner amongst several scientific organizations, so I am not aware of an authoritative source that defines whether it is a symbol, abbreviation, or initialism. Edit conflicts

Hi, well here I am taking you up on your offer! I seem to keep getting edit conflicts on the article. A little while ago I tried bundling all my edits into a really big single edit, taking about 30 minutes putting them together, but as I posted on the talk page, when I got another edit conflict while trying to submit my edit, I must have done something silly because I seem to have lost of all that editing. Is there any way of getting them back? I am assuming there isn't. I'm slightly regretting the wasted effort. I'll just have to be more careful in future. A Saku (talk) 04:07, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

Overstrand Hall

Hi. I'm not a great fan of over-hasty "proposed deletion" tags. I find they are somewhat discouraging. I created this article about 1 minute ago, and its notability is due to its architect. Give me 30 minutes and it'll be improved. Regards KJP1 (talk) 08:09, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi again. Apologies for the slightly tetchy tone of the above. I hope it now meets notability standards. It is, after all, a Lutyens house. Thanks and best regards.KJP1 (talk) 08:54, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

Many thanks and I'm truly glad you're happy with it. It's no Featured Article, to be sure, but it does add to the coverage of buildings by Sir Edwin Lutyens (a very, very important architect [POV!]) and therefore adds a modest something to the sum of Wikipedia knowledge. Best regards. KJP1 (talk) 18:23, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

            • Wait, can't you just do the whole "email new password" thing? Like on the login screen isn't there an option to have a new password emailed to you? — Precedingsigned comment added by Cymru.lass (talkcontribs) 03:21, 20 March 2011 (UTC)
  • Oh, you know, I had never noticed that.. I just now clicked it, but have not rec'd an email. Will wait. Thanks!  – Ling.Nut 03:32, 20 March 2011 (UTC)
    • Haha didn't occur to me either but I just had to use that feature on another site and a lightbulb started knocking round the inside of my head. (Okay, that wasn't a cryptic joke at all...)— Preceding signed comment added by Cymru.lass (talkcontribs) 03:35, 20 March 2011 (UTC)
      • Yes, when I saw the edit summary I was kinda wondering if you had a little bump on your noggin this morning (or a bit too much liquid cheer)... later & thanks.. – Ling.Nut 03:38, 20 March 2011 (UTC)
        • Surprisingly not. I often sound that way, though, and my deadpan often makes people think I'm a total creeper! Especially because I just took some cough medicine for this nasty cold I've got. Apologies for the creepy/weird/cryptic joke :} — Preceding signed comment added byCymru.lass (talkcontribs) 03:42, 20 March 2011 (UTC)

No problem

I screwed that one up, no worries. --NellieBly (talk) 22:49, 19 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi, I have replied to your concern on my talk page. SeaphotoTalk 06:05, 21 March 2011 (UTC)

Re: Wikipedia in general in the past-ness

Well, I don't know for certain if I'm the oldest Wikipedian (I am over 50 yet not quite as old as, say, Ward Cunningham), but I have been on Wikipedia for a long time & the periods between my sightings of other old-timer Wikipedians have been consistently getting longer. (The one guy who could beat my record for certain is Slrubenstein, but he's not as active as I am.) Anyway, I might write an account of the "old days" of Wikipedia for the Signpost if I can figure out a way to write about it that entertains readers. (One of the drawbacks of being an old fossil like me is that old fossils tend to be boring.) -- llywrch (talk) 19:47, 23 March 2011 (UTC)

I case you're still interested, I blathered a bit at Wikipedia talk:Wiki Guides/What was your new user experience about the old days at Wikipedia. I don't know if I provided any information that the Wiki Guides could use, but I enjoyed reading what I wrote. Maybe you will too. -- llywrch (talk) 18:38, 30 March 2011 (UTC)
I loved it! Thank you :) I'm just fascinated for some reason by the way things used to be around here--it sounds so cool! (I sound like a small child calling a twenty-year-old "old", don't I?) — Preceding signed comment added by Cymru.lass (talkcontribs) 03:15, 31 March 2011 (UTC)
