Spanish naming customs edit

Please refrain yourself from shortening the last names of people of Hispanic descent or birth, as seen in Spanish naming customs last names, specially in Colombia, are compound meaning both the father and the mother paternal last name are used in non-hyphened combination to form the one last name. Articles within the scope of the the WikiProject Colombia follow for the most part this fashion to maintain cohesion, form, and tradition. mijotoba (talk) 18:46, 4 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

To the best of my knowledge, I have only done so in some cases where the article about the person in question only has the paternal surmame in its title, such as the article called "Alberto Santofimio". Santofimio's maternal surname is mentioned in the beginning of the article (as it should), but as the article itself isn't named "Alberto Santofimio Botero" but "Alberto Santofimio", it seems unnecessarily verbose to refer to Santofimio more than once as "Santofimio Botero" in the same article. After all, we have already been told his maternal surname, so repeating it gives us no new information. Besides, Santofimio is a rather unusual surname (unlike names like García, González, Jiménez and so on), so the risk of a mix-up between Alberto Santofimio Botero and other notable persons called Alberto Santofimio seems very slight. Obviously the editor who created the article in question and named it simply "Alberto Santofimio" must have thought along these lines. Otherwise he or she would have named it "Alberto Santofimio Botero". And if he or she had done so, it would be a different matter altogether. By the way, I understand Spanish quite well and I'm very well acquainted with Spanish naming customs. I suppose that the editor who named the article simply "Alberto Santofimio" is well acquainted with them as well. To sum up: I have merely followed the title of the article. Corlier (talk) 19:31, 4 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Article name usage does not always refer to the actual usage of the name throughout the article or in practice. First of all, I am not debating the fact that after the initial mention of the subject's full name the subject should be referred to simply with the first last name in the rest of the article, however name usage in templates should reflect an official usage and most of the changes you made were to names of a subject in another subject's article. For example, in the Alberto Santofimio article you changed the name in the infobox, even though the infobox is for easier recognition of official names, dates, offices, and places; also in the José María Samper you changed the name in the Defaultsort template, even though that template is specifically used for listing in the categories something that is very useful in the Category:Samper family, and you also went as far as to change the last name of other people linked in the article like Soledad Acosta Kemble, which is an article I created and has the name as simply Soledad Acosta, so your arguments that "obviously the editor who created the article in question...must have thought along these lines" is invalid not to mention an appeal to authority fallacy. The fact that Santofimio is an unusual last name as opposed to García has nothing to do with its use, or on the fact that when referred to him outside his article for official purposes it should follow Spanish naming customs.mijotoba (talk) 23:54, 4 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Actually, the usual pratice is to have the name in the infobox in the same form as in the title of the article: if the article only has the paternal surname in its title, the same normally applies to the infobox as well. For obvious reasons I won't go through the whole Wikipedia, but here are just a few examples, all of which only have the paternal surname both in the title and in the infobox: Felipe González, Javier Solana, Jorge Semprún, Salvador Allende, Augusto Pinochet, Fidel Castro, Francisco Franco, Julio Iglesias, Pablo Picasso, Simón Bolívar, Alfredo Stroessner, Fulgencio Batista, Ricardo Lagos. I'm sure you can dig up examples where the maternal surname is mentioned in the infobox but not in the title, but those cases are clearly in the minority. The dominant practice is to have the name in the same form in the infobox as in the title. If the title includes the maternal surname, so should the infobox. If it doesn't, it shouldn't. You may have another opinion about this matter, but the practice that you advocate is obviously not the most usual one. Corlier (talk) 09:38, 5 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Place names of Spanish origin in the United States edit

Hello, I removed one of your cats because no mention in the article. I think that should be minimum qualification; no issue o/wise. Cheers Crusoe8181 (talk) 10:31, 25 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Not in cases which are quite obvious. I don't know if you speak Spanish, but if you do, you will know that Brazos is a Spanish word. Moreover, Brazos is situated in Texas, where place names of Spanish origin are very common for historical reasons (old Spanish colony). There is simply no other plausible explanation for the origin of this name. That it is of Spanish origin is beyond all reasonable doubt.Corlier (talk) 10:40, 25 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Corlier, you are ignoring that these categories are being used inconsistently. Based on how it is used for places of English origin, it has to relfect a given place in England. So you would have to identify a place in Spain named Brazos this is named after. Beyond this, the Spanish never controled most of Texas. In the case of Palo Pinto County, Texas it was clearly a case of Anglos applying some Spanish words that they thought sounded cool. Also just because something is "obvious" does not mean it is correct. Are you going to put Almanor, California in this category?John Pack Lambert (talk) 02:17, 17 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
