Replaceable fair use Image:Carrizozo.jpg

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Carrizozo.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Bkell (talk) 19:43, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

FAR

Thanks, although I wouldn't say that FAR is back on track if you mean preserving stars. Most are outmoded and haven't been improved since they passed three years ago, so FAR is more a result of three years of apathy than anything. Only 15% of articles at FAR have been saved since the start of May; it's the result of a whole generation of articles not moving enough with rising standards. I've only got enough time to try and fix some old Australian FAs and it's mostly up to the WikiProjects to fix their old FAs. Only the Australian one does FA saves, and Yannismarou does the Greek ones all by himself. But even then, although all seven Aus FARs since late 2007 have or will be saved, the continual rise of FA standards means that a lot more have been rendered unsatsfactory and will be inevitably be FARed once they all pile up. WP:INDIA has lost 20 in the last 24 months and the FA count has stayed stuck to around 65 for the last two years. The same thing could happen to Australia if there an underclass of FAs gets left behind because it's hard to deal with lots of FARs at once on the run unless there are a lot of people from the same WikiProject all working on them. DYK for Amak Volcano

On July 11, 2009, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Amak Volcano, which you created or substantially expanded. You are welcome to check how many hits your article got while on the front page (here's how) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

I'll take a look at it after I sleep for a few hours. Keep in mind that I've already read it, and if you're looking for someone to take a fresh look to check for unclear spots, I might not be the best person. JKBrooks85 (talk) 11:45, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

Re: Amak Volcano

Hey Ceranthor, sorry for the late reply. Um, its not that I'm busy, its just that I'm not in the mood to review articles, really. But, I do have a lot of nominations up at GAN, so I'll review your article. :) --  ThinkBlue  (Hit BLUE) 16:09, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Knowing

I saw this months ago, but I think the edit is not vandalism. It does bloat the plot summary though ...we can read in the article that the solar flare strikes the planet and kills everything, and there's no need to describe what buildings are seen being blasted thanks to special effects. I went ahead and reverted. - SoSaysChappy (talk) 23:01, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

WikiCup participates in the Wikipedia:The Great Wikipedia Dramaout

Hello all, iMatthew here. I just wanted to let you know about "The Great Wikipedia Dramaout" which starts this Saturday. The goal of the Dramaout is to spend five days working on improving articles and abstaining from any of Wikipedia's drama. I don't think that any of you will have a problem focusing on articles for five days, because of course, any work you get done during the Dramaout will count towards your score in the WikiCup. Details are on the page; hope to see you all signing up! :) iMatthew talk at 00:27, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for making WP:NODRAMA a success!

Thank you again for your support of the Great Wikipedia Dramaout. Preliminary statistics indicate that 129 new articles were created, 203 other articles were improved, and 183 images were uploaded. Additionally, 41 articles were nominated for DYK, of which at least 2 have already been promoted. There are currently also 8 articles up for GA status and 3 up for FA/FL status. Though the campaign is technically over, please continue to update the log page at WP:NODRAMA/L with any articles which you worked during the campaign, and also to note any that receive commendation, such as DYK, GA or FA status. You may find the following links helpful in nominating your work:

  • T:TDYK for Did You Know nominations
  • WP:GAC for Good Article nominations
  • WP:FAC for Featured Article nominations
  • WP:FLC for Featured List nominations
  • WP:FPC for Featured Picture nominations

Again, thank you for making this event a success! --Jayron32.talk.say no to drama 02:46, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

African plate

Which motion is African plate moving. Is it more north or it is more east. The thing is East Rift, when West Africa splits from east Africa. This doesn't see any evidence of South Amerca moving south, it is generally moving west, but some showing is South America is moving west-northwest.--69.228.145.50 (talk) 22:31, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

OS election comment

[1] No one's ever said kinder words. Thank you. :) hmwithτ 12:27, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Meh. ceranthor 12:28, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Yes, he's quite the charmer. I personally liked how he left 10 highly flowery, overblown personalized support messages for almost every single candidate running, followed by one terse, snarky, unhelpful no vote, despite the fact that the header specifically said not to leave comments, a request that nobody seemed to have a problem obeying except him. Makes his participation in the election voting look a bit pointy and rather passive aggressive if you ask me. But then again, few people do. Have a blessed day. Bullzeye contribs 20:04, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

erm... ceranthor 20:48, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
I have no desire to break this particular butterfly upon a wheel. I would, however, strongly urge you to reconsider your comments in the future if congeniality is your goal. Your earnest protestations aside, even the most cursory glance of the page would show that nobody else was dropping comments, least of all negative ones. That's for a reason, since CU and Oversight elections are not intended to be a "second RFA"; all of the candidates have been vetted by ArbCom and have long and upstanding enWiki careers. Anything more than a cursory perusal of the CU/OS election process would likely have made this distinction clearer to you. While, again, I'm 100% certain you acted purely in good faith, a good question to ask one's self before posting is "Will this generate light, or merely heat? Is this helpful to the Wikipedia process to which I am contributing?". If all else fails, I try and fall back on what I learned in elementary school; if you walk into a classroom with 12 kids and leave cupcakes for 9 of them and hock a loogie in eye of the 10th, people might think you're spoiling for a fight and call you out on it. And with that, I'll trouble you no further, Sir. Bullzeye contribs 21:16, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
I'd just like to make it clear that I meant this oppose in a totally non-bitey way. Jennavecia and I have no conflict between us, but I wouldn't say we are friends, nor acquaintances. ceranthor 11:45, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Note: Several of the candidates have comments that were made and then moved further up into the comments/questions section so the vote section appears relatively uncluttered. Search for "comment moved from vote section" on that page for examples; not all have them, but more than one or two do have them. Obviously not all have been moved, but definitely more than one voter has left additional commentary during the process. FWIW.  Frank  |  talk  14:49, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Hey. I was wondering if the tags placed on the Black Metal Box page would be removed. Alt text review

I looked at the Altviewer summary and have these comments:

  • The alt text for the first map has too many irrelevant details (e.g., colors), and not enough of the gist of what the map tells the viewer, (e.g., where are the two seismic zones?). It also contains details (like the interpretation of the green and red circles, or the fact that the Cottage Grove fault was responsible for the quake) that cannot be verified by a non-expert who is looking only at the image. Please see WP:ALT#What not to specify. I'd reword it to mention only the locations of the two seismic zones, the location of the Cottage Grove fault, and perhaps the fact that the New Madrid zone has more little circles.
  • The Gateway Arch alt text has irrelevant detail about vegetation and cars. I assume that the illustration is there mostly to remind people what the arch itself looks like, so the alt text should (briefly) do that and then stop. There's no need to say "Gateway Arch" in the alt text since it's already in the caption.

Hope this helps. Eubulides (talk) 04:54, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Preemptive Removal of Page Protections

Is there a reason you are removing the fulfilled requests? The bot can handle that on its own and you are not giving enough time for people to see the reason of the fulfilled/declined requests. I personally think you should relax on it and just not do it. –túrianpatois 22:19, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

Confusional AfD - reply

Hi Ceranthor. Actually, I have some experience with CSD and AfD, and I also consider myself as a patient person :)) The problem is that sometimes I act a bit clumsy (Czechs say: "like an elephant in a chinaware shop"). I was 100% sure this is A7. Btw, I often patrol new articles in the morning in the Mitteleuropa, and I can confirm that sometimes a patrolling admin is as rare as a living white mammoth :) ...now I've started a lesson about Elephantidae, uff... Hi, Groomer2, welcome to the project. I see that you are confused with the tagging of the article you created for deletion. The article is copied directly from here, and unfortunately, that website is copyrighted, so the article can't be kept in its current state. If you'd like, you can try rewriting the article, without removing the speedy template and using reliable sources. I'll be glad to see if you can bring the article to a standard worth keeping, and you seem sensible, so please stay around! ceranthor 22:32, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
The article was deleted, so would you mind, if you try to rewrite the article, writing it in userspace? ceranthor 22:37, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
