TGC edit

First of all, thank you for all that you are doing with this; I think that it would have fallen apart if it wasn't for your recent doings. I had somewhat forgotten about it for a while, but now I'm going to make sure that I help until it is done. And now that I'm done with all of that nonsense... Do you think that it would be more appropriate to name the rules approval page Wikipedia:Trading card game/Action plan/Phase 1:Rules/Rules approval? Just so that it fits in with the whole action plan thingamajigger. Anyhoo, thanks again for all of this. ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 23:05, 1 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Much better, but the name in the "Species" field should be abbreviated as H. psychedelica. mgiganteus1 (talk) 00:42, 3 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion of "Taxonomy/Avemetatarsalia" edit

A page you created, Taxonomy/Avemetatarsalia, has been tagged for deletion, as it meets one or more of the criteria for speedy deletion; specifically, it has no content, other than external links, categories, "see also" sections, rephrasing of the title, and/or chat-like comments.

You are welcome to contribute content which complies with our content policies and any applicable inclusion guidelines. However, please do not simply re-create the page with the same content. You may also wish to read our introduction to editing and guide to writing your first article.

New toy edit

Hi Bob,

If you fancy experimenting with the tool I've been creating for taxonomy creation, you can find it at tools:~verisimilus/Bot/taxobot. I want to iron out a few quirks before making it available for general release, so whilst bug reports are welcome at User talk:Taxobot, where I already have a to-do list, I mainly thought that as such an epic creator of taxonomy templates this might make your life easier (-:

Cheers,

Tortoise taxobox edit

Re your question on my talk page..

I am ok with templates generally, I made the Pleurodira one myself, however with a taxobox I feel there is a lot of variation across taxa making it difficult to automate. That said I guess it could be essentially automated and then add in options somehow. I mostly edit the pages under the Chelidae, but I looked at the tortoise page after being referred to the Galapagos Tortoise page and seeing it not only being inadequate but also that requests for the review of an expert was warranted. Apart from being a specialist Chelid Taxonomist I did work with Galapagos Tortoises many years ago so can add some insight in the Testudinidae.

The level of suborder is crucial in Turtles and Tortoises, all these are divided into side-necks and hidden necks, ie Pleurodira and Cryptodira. In fact as biologists on these species its one of the first things you want to know. So that rank is important in turtles.

Another one is the way the authorities are done, personally I have been making this a reference point and ensuring that the actual paper being refered to by, for example Gray, 1831, is in the list of references. So I would want the ability to edit this field with ref tags and a full citation.

I try if I can to add a distribution map in here also and to use the horizon distribution for the taxa also ie the fossil record, as well as any IUCN listings, for species level. If you want my help with developing your taxobox's feel free to ask me. Hope this explains my reasons for you. Faendalimas (talk) 02:29, 12 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Tetrapoda edit

Whoops, that's definitely a mistake. Thanks for the catch, I'll backtrack and see where it went wrong. MMartyniuk (talk) 02:38, 13 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Ah ok. There seem to be two simultaneous uses of Reptiliomorpha going on in the articles. One as a paraphyletic superorder/grade of non-amniote reptiliomorphs and one as an unranked clade containing amniotes and their closest relatives. I don't know enough about the subject to say which is the preferred usage. Bit like the wrid situation we now have where Synapsida is triply or quadruply paraphyletic with respect to Pelycosauria, Therapsida, Mammaliaformes and Mammalia. Getting Started at the TCG edit

Hi, I just stubled upon the Wikipedia:TCG and joined up. I like the idea, and want to help, but for the life of me can't figure out where to get started.

Could you do me a favor and bring me up to speed: What should I do, how the group operates, who other than you and Hi878 are the movers and shakers, the general stuff. I tried to figure it out, and it might be that it's almost 3AM local, but I am at the point where I have to ask.

BTW, I do edit images, but the best I can do is moderate level pngs. I use Paint.NET and can do most things with it.

Thanks, Sven Manguard Talk 07:44, 15 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

RE:TCG edit

I think Hi already added me to the list, thank you, though. Doesn't the MediaWiki software automatically render SVGs as PNGs anyway? On the article description page, it should already be PNG. See WP:SVG Help#Rendering files. —Preceding signed comment added by Nicky Nouse (talkcontribswikia) 23:59, 28 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

But, like you advised me, we'll make them SVGs while they're in progress and then export as PNG when they're finalized. I can always export them, but I like the plan before of them being SVGs wile they're WIPs. —Preceding signed comment added by Nicky Nouse (talkcontribswikia) 01:43, 29 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Saurida (prehistoric fish) edit

The article Saurida (prehistoric fish) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Couldn't find any evidence that this is in fact something else than Saurida; the only source cited here—the Paleobiology Database, not very reliable anyway—says the genus is extant.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Ucucha 21:46, 5 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Your proposal for deletion sounds unflawed to me; you've got a good eye. Go for it. I wouldn't exactly call PaleoDB unreliable, although its taxonomies are quite often outdated-- the staff there tend to focus more on adding new data than on updating old data. Bob the Wikipedian (talkcontribs) 23:20, 5 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. As for the database, they are probably a reliable reporter of primary data—e.g., when they say "Smith (2002) placed genus Aus in family Bidae", Smith probably did. However, their classification is such a mishmash of different taxonomies that one shouldn't place much trust in it. Ucucha 23:48, 5 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Editnotice edit

I have created an editnotice for the individual card proposals page which you can see here. It isn't very good at the moment; I just threw it together to make it easier to stop people from nominating articles that won't work. If you can make it better (which wouldn't be hard), then by all means, go ahead. ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 02:52, 9 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Big-headed turtle edit

Hi Bob, I noticed you created the redirect of Big-headed turtle to Big-headed Turtle. That was quite some time ago(2008) and we now have WP:Fauna name and discussion at WP:FA about naming animal articles in general and turtle examples have occurred at FA such as Bog turtle, Loggerhead sea turtle which have resulted in agreement that the turtle name is lowercase. Are you okay with Big-headed Turtle being moved back to Big-headed turtle? Like to be sure before I go ahead and change it. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 20:18, 16 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Protosalvinia edit

So, why isn't the page title in italics? Shouldn't it be? I'm replying on this technical issue here rather than in the general automated taxobox discussion, so that it doesn't get lost in the overall thread there. --EncycloPetey (talk) 20:02, 27 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. Also, Template:Taxonomy/Incertae sedis/Plantae claims two template loops, although these do not appear in the article where the template is used. Does this signify a template problem, or is it merely an artefact of seeing the template out of its use location? From the template name, it looks to me as though numerous incertae sedis templates will have to be created for all the various uncertain placements. Am I correct in that understanding? --EncycloPetey (talk) 20:08, 27 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
It looks as thought he reason Protosalvinia didn't italicize was the name= parameter in the automated taxobox, which contained italicizing quotes. With those removed, the title italicizes without the extra template. --EncycloPetey (talk) 20:36, 27 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
I can handle debugging as long as the coding doesn't read like a phone book. I've done some considerable work writing templates on Wiktionary to display complex grammatical information from a few default values, especially for Latin and Spanish. So, I have some template-writing (and debugging) experience. The Taxobox template, and its new incarnation, just have so much going on that I have a hard time parsing it all without more documentation or example pages. Rkitko is helping me with the latter. --EncycloPetey (talk) 20:41, 27 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
