Knitting Pictures

Yes, I still have the original. You're defiantly right about the spelling, I'll fix that soon. I'm also working on making one for purling. As for the clockwise vs. counterclockwise, I believe I am wrapping the yarn around the needle in a clockwise manner. If you look closely at the picture you can see that the yarn goes diagonally across the needle, starting lower on the left side and higher on the right. I actually got out a pair of needles and knitted a sample, and I do wrap the yarn around clockwise. It may be that I knit differently from most people, I'm not sure. When I tried to wrap the yarn counterclockwise not only did it feel awkward, but it resulted in the stitches being arranged on the needles differently. When you knit which side of the needle is the first strand of the stitch on? When I wrap clockwise the stitch starts in front and goes to the back, but it is the opposite when I wrap counter-clockwise. Hopefully you are able to understand what I mean. Knitting Machine

Hi, thanks so for fixing my typos, I'm usually very particular about that sort of thing so I much appreciate the speedy cleanup!

I searched hard for a suitable picture, and had decided to wait until I could create some because those currently available were very nice but unsuitable. There are two good pictures of what looks like an industrial, circular, knitting machine, for which articles exist, whereas this article needs to explain domestic flat bed machines, and from there to give perspective on the others.

Taking the audience's viewpoint and working from the familiar to the less familiar, someone coming here to look up knitting machines has a high probability of wanting to see what a modern domestic or small studio knitting machine looks like, usually the flat bed 200 needles punch card variety or with electronic patterning added, which I'm trying to get photographed this week. The relatively fewer people who want more information about industrial machines can find several articles which already display those two pictures that are currently available.

What do you think about leaving it pictureless until something more appropriate can be acquired?

Sumer is icumen in

I have replaced fart you reintroduced in the poem with "forth". On the other hand it is highly unlikely that a song with a F*** word in it would be sung in a church choir! Nowhere is ferth translated with that four-letter word in any authoritative translation. Plenty of reference is available on the links section of the article in question. Please note that ferth is rendered as forth also in OE dictinaries. If you find something to the contrary, please let me know. --Wikipedius 20:13, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

Re: Formatting

The basis of my argument at Talk:Horace Mann School (New York City) was from the Manual of Style (a guide based on editorial consensus, not a policy). Specifically I referenced Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Keep markup simple to argue that, all things being equal, an infobox with wiki formatting is more in keeping with Wikipedia's editorial openness than an HTML entity. --Dystopos 04:12, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

A newcomer to Wiki (McClancy Article)

I didn't mean to sound vulgar or redundant in any way, I was in rather a hurry when a friend mentioned there was an update to the mcclancy article and I hadn't a chance to submit mine in the mean time, it really bothered me, sorry about that. I've also just figured out what (diff) and (hist) means (I'm very wary of just clicking links all over the place). The WikiDocu on ownership clarified many other ideas I had in mind as well, thank you for bringing the topic up. I'll look around and start reading other official documents before I contribute any futher. Again, totally sorry! :( :D

Thanks! and question about SVG

Hi, Don, thanks so much for your really nice notes on my Talk page! The knitting articles were fun to write, although they still need a lot of work. I really don't know much about SVG, though; is it better than PNG? I tried to read up on it before writing to you, so I wouldn't be totally clueless, but I wasn't able to find a good "comparison" webpage. It seems like SVG might give smaller files for schematics like the sweater designs, might be editable and might print better when blown up huge. But a big drawback seems to be that not all browsers support SVG, especially IE -- is that still true? If you could help me understand why SVG is preferable, that'd be great. :) WillowW 10:19, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

US as abbreviation for United States

I saw you've been botting US to U.S.—is this reflecting some new WP policy? I think the version with periods looks awful, and it would seem to fall under the dictum of "leave it the way the author wrote it" unless superseded by some other style rule. /blahedo (t) 05:28, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

The (very old) guidance can be found under Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style#Acronyms_and_abbreviations:- When abbreviating United States, please use "U.S."; that is the more common style in that country. When referring to the United States in a long abbreviation (USA, USN, USAF), periods should not be used. When including the United States in a list of countries, do not abbreviate the "United States" (for example, "France and the United States", not "France and the U.S."). Why are you sure the French text is the original text? What do yoy know about the history of this song? I know only it refers to the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela before the 17. century. I don't know if you saw Image talk:Dvorak keyboard2.png, but it looks like Commons is inadvertently hosting several more "Key Caps"/"Keyboard Viewer" images. Can you hack up similar comparison images to the one you did there? I'm not sure that you really need more evidence. Just dispute them, point them to the comparison image at my site, and see what happens. The background is clearly a copy. The actual letters are not in the default Lucida Grande in e.g. the Qwerty picture, and I don't have a keyboard layout file for HCESAR so I can't do quite the same smoking-gun comparison as I did for Dvorak, but what's there should be enough. /blahedo (t) 17:12, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Aargh, SB just told me about the previous attempt at deletion of those images, and the result. I may try again.
