Got a message from you to "refrain from adding nonsense". Not sure why. I simply clarified the sentence and removed the loaded term "extremist" (which is poor grammar anyway). Help and ideas needed edit

Hi Beta,

Sorry you've been spammed, but I hope you'll find for a good reason. I've know you are active around the recent changes arena (normally having beaten me to a revert), and I'm currently looking for help with a new project. I would like to harmonise all the warnings and templates we issue, with goal to creating a standard look, format and content to the messages. Even if you use VP, VS or any of the other vandal tools out there, I still feel this is worthwhile. Please visit here for further information, and leave me a message if you're interested, or tell me to get lost ;) if you haven't the time. 69.85.184.134 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) edit

Why did you block 69.85.184.134? That IP was tagging articles direly in need of cleanup with cleanup tags. That's productive work. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 02:48, 22 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

the reason that I blocked it was it was adding {{toomuchtrivia}} to pages that had no trivia sections, and appeared to be a bot which was doing it because of the speed. Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 02:51, 22 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Any examples? I just see a full screen of reverted useful cleanup tags, and a couple edits a minute (which I personally do all the time without any scripting at all just by using tabs; look at my delete logs sometime). - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 02:53, 22 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
see [1] the page as one item of trivia, [2] only has two Items listed, Again only one [3] [4] are a few. Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 03:02, 22 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
I made a few mistakes when I was first an administrator, but I think that what you did was a mistake. There's nothing wrong with tagging trivia sections saying they should be integrated into the article. —Mets501 (talk) 03:06, 22 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Despite the fact that it's named "toomuchtrivia", any article with a trivia section should be tagged with TMT. Trivia sections, however long, need to be combined into more-relevant parts of the article. It was definitely a mistake to massrevert all of this IP's contribs and block. Could you please unblock and help me replace these cleanup tags? - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 03:06, 22 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Not to pile-on, but I think that blocking was way too premature for this user: he/she was not warned at all, and was not given any explanation in the block summary or on the user talk page as to the reason for blocking, besides that they were vandalizing. —Mets501 (talk) 03:09, 22 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
I agree that that was a little hasty of me. Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 03:22, 22 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I noticed you denied the unblock request on User talk:193.63.62.188. I noticed you didn't sign it, which may cause some sort of response from the IP that we don't want (it could range from anger to misunderstanding etc.) I wouldn't have bothered with this message, but I felt that considering this is a formal procedure, remedying this lack of signature with {{unsigned}} might not have been best. BoardFusion Article Deletion edit

Hi, could you let me know why the BoardFusion article was deleted? --BP 12:27, 24 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Re: The reason that it was deleted as per CSD G11 and WP:WEB
I don't see how it met G11 'Blatant Advertising' - I have no affiliation with BoardFusion at all, and I can't remember using any marketing-like langauge. I created the article because it is a significant piece of open-source ColdFusion software, and also a discussion forum - both areas within which I am active on Wikipedia. It wasn't completely encylopaedic because I didn't have time to write a full article, so I created the stub as a reminder to turn it into a more complete article today. If WP:WEB applies to BoardFusion then it would also apply to all except a small handful of the forums at Comparison_of_Internet_forum_software, none of which have been speedily deleted? --BP 15:01, 24 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hey there newbie admin =). I got a few questions regarding CFD recategorization and such. The IP was blocked? edit

I have no relation with the unblock request except I was monitoring a report I made at AIV and noticed the diff in recent history. But the most recent block for the IP says expiry 48 hours nearly a month ago. It does say sockpuppet of an indef banned user, but this IP has edited since Oct 5, with some good faith edits.

Am I misunderstanding something? Gotyear 17:56, 25 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Oh. I was presuming it was a range block, since the IP said "I'm trying to edit Cell membrane and it says I have a 24 hour block on 152.163.100.202", and there is a 24 hr block on that similar IP address from an hour ago.

I'm curious how they were able to edit at AIV though. Eh, I'm completely confused now. Gotyear 18:09, 25 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Thanks for your reply. I guess that's what I get for leaving a category unattended for so long; I created it for real people who wear eyepatches for medical reasons, and I see that it got deleted because it was overrun with fictional characters who wear it for effect. Califone page edit

Help me to understand why you keep removing the Califone MySpace page. How is it unverifiable? I have already said that I can verify it. Loperco 15:30, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Also- if you look at the Califone official site, http://pastrysharp.com, you will see that the MySpace page is linked there. That should be enough to verify it for you.Loperco 15:33, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

You said:

I will tell you why I removed it: see WP:EL Links to social networking sites should be avoided un less they are in direct relation to the site this includes www.myspace.com on the MySpace page. but does not include a person's profile and thus should be removed. Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 15:35, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

But I don't see anything about social networking in WP:EL which I did look at before posting the question on your talk page.
You also said that if the MySpace page is linked on their official site,

then that is all the more reason to remove it. Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 15:36, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Why would this be "all the more reason?" Even though it is useful to fans of Califone, because it is verifiable, it is irrelevant?Loperco 15:43, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Related to the above on Kathryn Holloway the subjects own myspace page was deleted. This fits WP:EL What should be included - Articles about any organization, person, web site, or other entity should link to the official site if there is one. --Salix alba (talk) 18:37, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
[7] Links to blogs, social networking sites (such as MySpace), or discussion forums unless mandated by the article itself Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 18:47, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Now there is a big difference between the subject's myspace site, and a myspace site by someone else which mentions the subject. Yes the latter are normally a good case for deletion. But the subject's own site is a different matter. The subject's own site (be it a normal webpage/blog/myspace) is generally the first thing I look for when reading a bio. It can give me the information straight from the horses mouth, it allows me to makeup my own mind about the person, rather than rely on third party sources. In this case the myspace page , tells me far more info about the person than the wikipedia entry, details of companies she founded, and allows me to see read her "Ten Key Values", plus a whole lot more. --Salix alba (talk) 19:29, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

VandalProof login errors edit

Hi Betacommand. Not sure if you're watching the VP1 talk/bug pages. Myself and a few other loyal VP users have been unable to access any functionality of VP due to some sort of login error. Do you have any idea what may have happened? Is the old version being supported and, if it isn't, is it possible to be aloud access to VP2 so that I/we can "fight our good fight"? Thanks, cheers and take care! And it doesn't look like a hoax to me, at first glance. If we really wanna delete this I think it deserves a fair shot at Afd, unless there's some obvious reason for deletion that I'm not seeing. Would you restore the above list? The (new) editor nominating it at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of capitals of subnational entities, omitted stating that it's a full list of first level subnational entities. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Breakdown (-core) edit

Hi, I found your closure of the above a little strange. You didn't specify a target in your AfD closure but I note you left a talk page AfD result and an edit summary which claimed the merge was to Breakdown (music), which is actually a redirect to Break (music). However, the page (and AfD tag) are still at Breakdown (music term), to where the original page (Breakdown (-core)) was redirected during the debate.

The relevant info has been merged there by User:Xdiabolicalx and I've redirected the pages as appropriate. Speaking from experience it's always good to double check redirects / merges are done properly and be as clear as possible in AfD summaries. Deizio talk 13:47, 30 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

That's cool, and don't hesitate to ask if you want a second pair of eyes to look over any closures you're not sure about. I eased myself in to closing AfDs by starting with non-controversial deletes (easy) and working my way up. Merges can be tricky because of the redirects involved and not everything in a given article necessarily needs to be merged into the target. Don't be afraid to leave a closure to someone else if you're not totally sure what to do. Nice one, Deizio talk 14:40, 30 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

VandalProof rejection edit

Would you care to elaborate on "questionable activity" and anything I can do to rectify it? Thanks. BJ 16:57, 30 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

As I said when I re added myself to the VP list the WP:3RR warning was bogus, I was warned at one revert of the page, and only reverted the page a total of two times. The "maintenance notices" warning was a matter of opinion, as I felt the notice was redundant. For the WP:BITE warning that was my fault, the template used was overly harsh. Does one mistake and a warning happy user disqualify me from using VandalProof? BJ 22:51, 1 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

VP Ongoing issue edit

For some reason my name has been removed from the list of authorized users. I was added by Betacommand here [11], and he welcommed me here[12]. I had difficulties using it, did everything I could myself, was unable to, so I requested assistance here [13]. Instead of assistance, I was removed from the list. Because I have had difficulties on wikipedia recieving help from administrators when requested, this message is in essence a generic template I am writing on all moderators' talk pages and discussion boards in the hopes of recieving if nothing else a response - ideally, however, a solution. Thank you very much and apologies for my impatience. Gregorof/(T) 05:18, 3 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

    • (Copied the above from my talkpage for ease of conversation.) I'm still not sure I see the problem. If it's with nominating articles, I don't intend to refrain from doing that. More about VandalProof edit

Hi, my application for VP was denied due to a 3RR block. While I certainly understand the reasoning for rejecting previously blocked applicants, I'm hoping you might review the decision as there were mitigating circumstances. I violated 3RR due to a mistaken assumption that "blatant POV assertions" could be treated similar to actual vandalism. The blocking admin clarified my error and also acknowledged that I had "moderately good cause". He suggested that if the entry in my block log was problematic I should provide a link to our dialogue and his explanation (link to "Seeking Clarification"). Since then I have taken the time to more thoroughly familiarize myself with the applicable policies and guidelines. In brief, I made an honest mistake and it won't happen again. I know you don't have time to review my User Contributions, but if you did they would show that I participate as a good-faith editor in all areas of WP from content contribution and article improvement to RC Patrol and anti-vandalism. I do hope you'll reconsider my application in light of these circumstances, but either way I'd like to thank you for your time and attention. --Doc Tropics Message in a bottle 18:47, 8 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Reasons for block of User:Respect My Authoritah! ? edit

Hi. We got a complaint to unblock-en-l that a new user was blocked. I checked on their contributions and talk page and such and see no contributions at all, no explanation in the block log for why they were blocked, etc.

Can you explain what the problem was that led to this block?

Thank you.

Georgewilliamherbert 21:28, 9 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

What is your reasoning under WP:USER?
It's a saying of Eric Cartman from South Park. I don't see how it's inappropriate.
Thank you. Georgewilliamherbert 21:48, 9 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
It's not an IRC channel, it's a mailing list (unblock-en-l@mail.wikimedia.org), which the user block message directs people to as a response if they feel their block was unjustified and they want to appeal it. There are about thirty admins that i know of on the list, and me (I am not an admin) and a few other non-admins. Georgewilliamherbert 22:09, 9 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Pardon the butting in, but just for the sake of another opinion, I see nothing offensive about this username. Also, whenever blocking, it's a very good idea to leave an explanation on the talk page of the blocked user. This ensures that the blocked user AND anyone who happens to wander by can see the explanation for the block. I'd recommend unblocking in this case. Friday (talk) 22:18, 9 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Hey Betacommand, I agree with Friday. I don't find this name offensive in the slightest. In addition, now that it's been discussed on the mailing list, I think there are plenty of admins watching the account if there's any problems with this user. And, yes, please leave a message on accounts when you block them. Cheers, Sarah Ewart (Talk) 23:02, 9 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
I've unblocked them and have asked the mailing list to keep and eye on their contributions and reblock if they turn out to be a troll/vandal. Feel free to take it to ANI if you wish. Also, above I meant please leave a message on the user's talk page explaining why you have blocked them (though a block log reason would also be nice). Sarah Ewart (Talk) 23:26, 9 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Also, you seem to have blocked a lot of accounts with "username" as the reason in the block log but haven't left messages on any talk pages. Please do this. And to be honest, I'm really not sure I understand your interpretation of USERNAME...I do not find some of these accounts to be inviolation of policy. Sarah Ewart (Talk) 23:36, 9 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Going along with that, how is User:Bluhmun! inappropriate? Is it similar to a vandal account? --Mr. Lefty (talk) 23:41, 9 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
! should not be in usernames per USERNAME Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 23:42, 9 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, but I didn't see that particular clause in there. Could you tell me exactly where it is in the policy page? --Mr. Lefty (talk) 23:45, 9 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
@ shouldn't be in a username but I've never read ! can't be. In fact, off the top of my head, we have at least one Admin who has an exclamation point in his name: User:Radiant!. Sarah Ewart (Talk) 23:52, 9 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
I mistook nonlatin letters. Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 00:04, 10 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Okay, well please unblock people you have mistakenly blocked. Thanks, Sarah Ewart (Talk) 00:31, 10 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

VandalProof edit

Hi. Unfortunately, it seems that I am not on the list despite your message.[15] Perhaps there is some other technical problem, but I guess the omitted user name is the most probable explanation. Request for unblock edit

I am Bobabobabo, i am using my home computer. To tell you the truth, I was a wonderful contributor to articles in Wikipedia "Yu-Gi-OH and Pokemon". The story began when a user named Mitsumasa began creating and upload Pokemon images and articles.

After about 5 months after the start of the articles the PCP began merging the articles (A Man In Black, Ryulong, Interrobamf) i tried talking to them, and the PCP but they did'nt listen. I even tried to leave a committ on their usertalk pages but A Man in Black is the only one that responds to my committ. I gave up until recently students at my school "The Learning Community School" began bullying me, they knew that I was a contributor at the site "Wikipedia", so they told my teacher that they logged in some accounts and began vandalizing the articles that I personattly was currently having problems with you. My teacher Mrs. Lisa Mercato talked to the students Jene', Jessica, Aaron and restricted them from using the school computer.

I'm very sorry. May you please unblock me and my IP address 72.177.68.38. May you please just make it that I can create a new account. It is a total misunderstanding. If you want to talk to my teacher, please email her at lmercato@yahoo.com. The block is casuing the school not to edit Wikipedia. Thank you, and God Bless. (18:43, 10 November 2006 (UTC))Reply

I've recently also gotten errors telling me that I'm not on the user list, and then later, that the list was corrupt. Thinking that it was something on my side, I traced VandalProof to the VandalProof "L" page, of which the encryption is apparently corrupted, perhaps due to something wrong with the reverts? VandalProof edit

Hi Betacommand,

Thanks for your recent efforts to get VandalProof up and running for everyone again, and your prompt answers! That's really appreciated. From what I understand, the problem is caused by the userlist being too long. Well, you can remove one name from the list, if that will help. :) On User:AmiDaniel/VP/Approval, you have both user:Firsfron and user:Firsfron of Ronchester listed. Both of those accounts are me, and only User:Firsfron requests VandalProof access (the Firsfron of Ronchester account has very few edits and has no need for VandalProof; it is only used for page protection testing). Sorry for any confusion my signature may have caused. Thanks again for everything, Firsfron of Ronchester 14:30, 11 November 2006 (UTC) Reply
