Unused images

The duplicate images that I did not use can be deleted. I want others to use only the best images. I already compared all the images and selected only the best ones. QuackGuru (talk) 19:25, 27 September 2016 (UTC)

They may not be useful for you, and you have "selected only the best ones" for your needs, but since they may have features such as transparency which other users may find useful in other scenarios there is little point in deleting them, in my opinion. Feel free to improve the description pages to indicate the advantages/disadvantages of the various versions if you are concerned, or nominate them for deletion if you like - but be aware that different versions are invariably kept. -- Begoon 02:42, 28 September 2016 (UTC)
After all the work you did I will not nominate the other images for deletion. My concern is that others could use the blurry images. Others may not see what I see. For example, I noticed this image is slightly tilted because the original image is slightly tilted. QuackGuru (talk) 05:47, 28 September 2016 (UTC)
Well, your "For example..." isn't really an example of a problem with leaving other versions available, since that's just an extra correction to your chosen version. I rotated it 0.2 degrees ccw now. Since none of the actual images are "blurry" and I suspect that my mentioning the fact that Mediawiki sometimes creates less sharp thumbnails when reducing png images has made you far more aware of it than you might otherwise have been, I'm of a mind to leave them there for the extra functionality of transparency they provide. They are, after all, on Commons, whose mission is not just to serve wikis but a wide range of re-users, so making decisions based on just what Mediawiki software does, and its flaws, is probably not the best "big picture" approach, all told. -- Begoon 07:08, 28 September 2016 (UTC)
Fair enough. One day the software on Wikipedia may be updated and the news media may use some of the images. The rotation improved the alignment. QuackGuru (talk) 07:33, 28 September 2016 (UTC)

cropped image

original image

I uploaded a new image today. There is too much space at the top and bottom of the image. The image would look better with less spacing like this image. I am using both images next to each other in my sandbox. QuackGuru (talk) 21:11, 28 September 2016 (UTC)

Ok, I cropped that one for you. I generally don't encourage direct requests here for stuff I haven't already worked on - it's better to post them at WP:GL/PHOTO, where you'll get more eyes on it, and a quicker result if I can't do it right away. Also, for simple, square crops like this one, take a look at: c:Commons:CropTool (using "lossless" option generally best, but see help). -- Begoon 00:26, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
The cropped image turned the e-cig into a narrow pencil in my sandbox. For my purpose a cropped image will work best. Can it be reversed and a separate file created to try to fix the issue? QuackGuru (talk) 01:03, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
Try purging the page, and clearing your browser cache. That kind of distortion is commonly a cache issue. It can be a separate file, though - I'll do that in a while. -- Begoon 01:10, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
When the size is 350 it is narrow. Other sizes it is fine. QuackGuru (talk) 01:19, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
Ah, in that case it's probably a corrupt thumbnail on WP servers. Try File:Blu E Cigs Pro Kit - Pen Style Electronic Cigarette Vaporizer (15129281431)crop.jpg in 5 minutes or so. -- Begoon 01:23, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
The new cropped image is working. The original image is a corrupt file or the file needs to be purged. QuackGuru (talk) 01:36, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
It takes a while for Commons cache to update. Both files are fine. If they don't look ok to you here then your browser cache is the problem. If it's a specific page, purge the page. -- Begoon 01:55, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
Both are fine here. QuackGuru (talk) 01:58, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
The test edit distorted the file. QuackGuru (talk) 02:04, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
Nope. Not for me. Just a normal, smaller thumb. So make sure you have cleared your browser cache. It looks fine to me in your sandbox too. Very occasionally, these caching issues are something else between you and WP, like your ISP caching, or some other network cache - in that case waiting is generally the only "fix", because it's out of your control. All I can tell you is both files are serving fine. -- Begoon 02:09, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
You're right. I cleared up my computer. I added the uncropped image to the blu eCigs page. QuackGuru (talk) 02:22, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

File:Lydia Kamakaeha.jpg

Hello Begoon. Thanks you so much for the portrait crops on the Photo Lab. They look beautiful. Could you possibly help with another similar one? I found this larger version of File:Lydia Kamakaeha.jpg. Could you possibly oval crop it, recreate the missing corners and do a light clean up of scratches like the upload on 23:55, 6 November 2011 and upload over existing file for continuity record?--KAVEBEAR (talk) 18:08, 4 October 2016 (UTC)

Sure - but that image can be cropped like this: rough demo (ignore extra whitespace), without recreating anything, which might be preferable? If you're happy with that plan I can do that properly, and clean up the marks/scratches later today. -- Begoon 00:43, 5 October 2016 (UTC)
Yes that looks great.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 01:38, 5 October 2016 (UTC)
Ok - I'll do a proper crop/clean later today, when I have some free time. -- Begoon 01:47, 5 October 2016 (UTC)

Thanks ...

... for File:Grand Opera House, Pueblo, Colorado crop.jpg. One of these days, I should learn to do that sort of thing myself. Deor (talk) 18:18, 9 October 2016 (UTC)

You're very welcome. If you just want to crop an image, and nothing else, you can take a look at: c:Commons:CropTool which does it all on the server. It's basic, but might sometimes be enough. Wouldn't have helped with the rotation and cleanup in this case though - for that there's no substitute to learning a bit of Photoshop, or Gimp. Incidentally, the conversation at Commons carried on, so there's also File:Grand Opera House, Pueblo, Colorado retouch.jpg available now. Cheers. -- Begoon 14:03, 10 October 2016 (UTC)

Thanx

Thank you very much for the swift action re cleaning the photograph of Ingrid Haebler. I just added three more requests, and of course you (or colleagues) needn't hurry. I am hesitant to say that I have 17 more requests pending (no hurries). Could I offer three of them per week, or is it better to find another way of making this happen? Vysotsky (talk) 11:26, 12 October 2016 (UTC)

Seems fine to me just to add them - maybe batches of 3 or 4 at a time. If anyone objects, they'll say so, but doesn't seem a problem to me. There have been a couple of occasions in the past where people have got edgy about being deluged with dozens of similar requests, but 17 doesn't sound excessive, especially if they are in use in articles. -- Begoon 11:57, 12 October 2016 (UTC)

Hawaiian Almanac and Annual

Hello Begoon. Could you possibly help me do a quick easy edit of these two images: File:Members of the Court, Hawaiian Almanac and Annual for 1890.jpg and File:Members of the Court, Hawaiian Almanac and Annual for 1889.jpg? I've uploaded a bunch of these to commons:Category:The Court, Hawaiian Almanac and Annual but I want them in the vertical order. Can you crop the outlier entries on the right and stitch it back to the main list on the left? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by KAVEBEAR (talkcontribs)

Thank you!

Begoon, thank you for reducing the svg files (here and here)! I do have a question, since I'm new to the svg thing and still have a few things to figure out! lol How do I get the file size (pixels) reduced like that when it is optimized? I use Inkscape and you can tell that by my comments in the box down below ("Does this work", etc.) that I tried to reduce it, but it didn't work! My computer shows it reduced, but then when I upload it on here, it says the same file size... if not larger. Thanks again, Corkythehornetfan (ping me) 15:42, 13 October 2016 (UTC)

I was actually cleaning up a category of files where the nominal dimensions were too high for WP:NFCC rules, which say we should not display non-free images with [width] x [height] greater than around 100,000 pixels. You set the dimensions in inkscape by first selecting all elements, Transform-Scale. Then you fit the page to the elements in File-Document properties-Page-Resize page to selection. But that has nothing to do with file size (Kb) - if I made any of your filesizes smaller that was by stripping out unnecessary code/metadata - there's a good page on that here: c:User:Quibik/Cleaning up SVG files manually. -- Begoon 16:40, 13 October 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll take a look! Appreciate it! Corkythehornetfan (ping me) 17:09, 13 October 2016 (UTC)
  • Begoon, would you be willing to reduce the width and height under the 400x400 pixels per guidelines for File:Colorado College seal.svg? I reduced the coding and tried reducing the pixels but it isn't working... I give up! Thanks, Corkythehornetfan (ping me) 18:56, 22 October 2016 (UTC)

The Graphic Designer's Barnstar

  The Graphic Designer's Barnstar
Very impressive work at Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Photography workshop. I can only imagine how painstaking and time-consuming all those retouches must have been. - NQ (talk) 08:50, 18 October 2016 (UTC)

Thanks again

Thanks again for your hard work. I am really pleased that these images (most of them used in Wiki articles) have now been cleaned up in a very nice way. Looking through all the images that I uploaded to Commons I seem to have about 17 more with number stamps or similar simple irregularities. I will wait a few weeks (so as not to overstretch), and then bring them into Graphics Lab/Photography workshop 3 at a time- if that's no problem. Vysotsky (talk) 09:14, 19 October 2016 (UTC)

The extension of wiki-image importance into non-Wikipedia/Wikimedia discussion space

SpaceX Interplanetary Spaceship

Hi Begoon. You very helpfully worked on this image at my request to improve an article.

Thanks, again, for that!

On a peripheral note, I thought you might be interested to note that your image is now being used as somewhat of a reference image to discuss esoteric engineering details on the design of the solar panels and (apparently, as perceived by some of those engineers) radiant-heat cooling systems for that particular spacecraft. Here's the link.

Enjoy, N2e (talk) 14:26, 6 November 2016 (UTC)

Very glad I tried to preserve that detail and colour in the aft area now. Interesting thread too, with some good questions and discussion. Thanks for sharing - I enjoyed that - particularly "where will they stow this?", and how "radiators" would work in space. -- Begoon 16:16, 6 November 2016 (UTC)
Super. Glad I shared that with you then. And yeah, the removal of excess heat from a spacecraft is a critically important design issue, but kind of counterintuitive to the non-physics and engineering folks who don't think about how much the air that surrounds us does much more than just supply oxygen.  :) N2e (talk) 17:18, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

Removing background from a second view of the spaceship

ITS Interplanetary Spaceship, landed on Enceladus (cropped)

Hi Begoon. I have decided that it would be a good thing to remove the fanciful artist's-conception background from a landed view of that same reusable interplanetary spaceship. This view illustrates the integrated landing gear (which is still very unusual on any spacecraft) and the cargo and passenger doors that can be seen in this particular view of the SpaceX CAD drawing render. To that end, in prep for that, I first renamed some wikimedia images today, then created a cropped image, to be used as the starting image. That cropped image is here.

Question: should I just start another request on the Graphics Workshop page? Or since you did the last one, and seem to enjoy the topic a bit, is it okay to just ask you here? (I really don't want to violate protocol; so don't feel any pressure at all. Just tell me the way you prefer and works best for you.) But if it is not offensive or against protocol, I would love to have you eliminate the background on this image like you did the other. (but note the black bottomside heatshield material, on the top and rightmost edge of the spacecraft; that should be retained in the image, as should the landing gear, as both the gear and the PICA-X heatshield are integral parts of the ship.) But if better procedure, I'll place it into the workshop queue. Cheers. N2e (talk) 17:18, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

I can do that. My concern would be that if you remove the background entirely, then it loses some context, since it's a picture of it "landed on" something, and the "something" would no longer exist... It may look visually odd to have it just seemingly "floating" on a pure white background with no "ground". Removing the black sky from around the upper part will probably be beneficial, since you'll actually be able to see the black heat shield areas, but just ripping the ground and shadows out from underneath could be jarring. Still, I'll have a better look at it in the next day or so, there might be a way to retain at least some of that visual context without the "fanciful" aspect. I think it's going to be a long climb down the ladder if the whole thing doesn't just topple over, though - or am I looking at the wrong door... -- Begoon 17:50, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
Yeah, good catch. YOu can see why I'm not a graphic artist. So, yes, leave some faux-background "ground" in it, while removing the Saturnian moon surface. Maybe concrete, a bit like this Landing Zone 1, which SpaceX have already used to land their Falcon 9 first stage on (twice now), but without the fire. If you look at the "gallery" on that article, you'll see a picture of the new/unused concrete circular landing pad that SpaceX released in late 2015, just before their first landing attempt on the thing. An alternative would be some soret of dirt or even (redish dirt) background???, but done in such a way that it doesn't come off fanciful and artist-ish, but more just a solid-ish color to simulate some surface the thing has landed on. I don't know, but that's all the ideas I have. Thanks for your willingness to help on this.
As for the ladder idea, Musk said they'd be using some sort of beams extending from the hatch with a descending basket/lift system, something like the things that are used for window washing on skyscrapers. Plus straight cable winch for the heavy cargo. If you are really ambitious, I could find a source for the Musk description of that and you could artist-ly sketch up a concept on that too. ;) — N2e (talk) 20:32, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
I didn't have a lot of time today, but I did look at this briefly. Every quick test I did looked pretty silly because the spaceship base/shadows and the Enceladus surface are so integrated it's hard to separate them - I got to thinking perhaps we might need to live with remnants of the Enceladus surface, faded away. It's a pretty anonymous bit of grey pock-marked swirly stuff if you greyscale it after all - but as I say, I had little time to try alternatives. I will try again tomorrow, when I have a little more time to spend on it. -- Begoon 12:53, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
Two thoughts on what you said. One fading out/smoothing/recoloring/etc the enceladus surface is probably fine; what you get might then look a bit like a concrete or rockish surface it is on. You could modify the distant part so it doesn't look like a planetary surface edge against the darkness of space. The big goal for me, as an editor who will use the image, is to separate the landed spaceship from its artist-conception Saturnian moon background. Cheers. N2e (talk) 02:56, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
I haven't forgotten this, but real life keeps getting in the way. I promise to make time to do it at the weekend, and apologise for the delay. -- Begoon 13:29, 10 November 2016 (UTC)

-- How's real life treating you. I got so busy the past couple of weeks myself that I forgot to check back here. Would still love to have one with whatever background out that you can get out reasonably easily. Cheers. N2e (talk) 00:25, 24 November 2016 (UTC)

It's treating me real bad, which is why I haven't had time to be here. But I'll get over it, as I've always done before. Sorry I let you down in the meantime. -- Begoon 14:30, 5 December 2016 (UTC)
