Categories question
Hi Bearcat, I recently published the joint biography Jerry and Mary Newport to mainspace (with multiple redirects for alternative names of the two subjects, i.e. Gerald Newport, Jerry Newport, Mary Newport, Mary Meinel, and Mary Meinel-Newport), and I have a question about how to apply WP:INCOMPATIBLE. An editor recently removed some, but not all of the categories that apply to only one of the subjects (and removed one category that appears to apply to both), citing WP:INCOMPATIBLE in their edit summary [1], and has not added categories that apply to only one subject to the single-name redirects.
My question is essentially whether I should add categories that apply only to one subject to the single-name redirects. Thank you! Beccaynr (talk) 14:16, 13 June 2023 (UTC)

removal of categories
I saw an edit of yours removed categories in draft page Draft:Old Post Office Museum (Winnsboro, Louisiana), and I reverted that (and then made some other category modifications). FYI, I am aware that technically Draftspace articles are not supposed to be in active categories, but it is convenient when drafting articles to bop back and forth to articles in the categories. And there are bots which come by, within a few hours, to apply some template so that they are no longer active, so you don't need to. I don't mean to cause anyone stress or work, and I hope my editing has not bothered you.

Separation of German people + occupation cats

Categories on Userspace drafts

- Comment from a Talk page stalker: User:Mgreason, it would be an overstatement to say that redlink categories cannot be put into place and left at least temporarily. It makes sense when editing to try reasonable guesses for what categories may or should exist. If it were truly terrible and absolutely not ever to be allowed, then some bot program could be put in place to identify occurrences and block editors for the transgression.
- However, in my opinion and I think this is shared, if it turns out a category does not exist (shows as a redlink), it is more polite if the editor who put it in would take responsibility to browse about and find categories which do apply, rather than leaving that work to others. That way the responsible editor learns, too. For example, I have had to learn, and relearn, that category names for log buildings in the United States are usually not of form Category:Log buildings in Wyoming but rather are of form Category:Log buildings and structures in Wyoming. Also it is an option to create subcategories where needed, by editing the redlink (empty) category and putting in categories of higher level types, for example to create a category needed for the log buildings and structures in a U.S. state that does not yet have one.

In an earlier exchange, you stated, "even if you're disabling the categories, you're still not allowed to use categories that don't exist to be used".
