Concerns About WE Charity Article Vandalism

Hello @Bearcat:

I hope you are doing well.

I recently reverted an edit on the WE Charity article. It was specifically about the controversy surrounding the organization and the federal government program, the Canada Student Service Grant. The first thing that caught my attention was the first sentence where it appeared to attack the Liberal Party of Canada, even though the party nor any federal party for that matter issues contracts on behalf of the federal government, the paragraph did read a little opinionated as well. There was also the lack of a necessary reference and grammatical errors. The edit is the first and only one by an anonymous user, which also made me question whether it belonged in the article or not. One of those things alone may not warrant a reverted edit, but considering it all, I decided to revert the edit.

I was wondering if you would be able to add the article to your watchlist in case this user and/or others attempt to vandalize it again. I thought you may be the best person to address this to, with it being a Canadian organization and the Government of Canada.

Before beginning this comes with a fiddly disclosure on my side: my post on its talk page about the protection level comes just after someone posted a link to it on discord, with no commentary. This message comes after a discussion that I eventually severed myself from to raise on-wiki. [Time stamp c. 16:02]

In any case, this is about an INVOLVED concern (as distinct from the protection level concerns I have). You created this article, but protected it after this set of edits. The edits should have been reverted, but they don't appear to be any of the narrow exceptions permitted by INVOLVED.

Busy busy: All The Mistakes I've Made

I've been back at it like a madman lately on Donald Shebib, his films, and Clifford Wiens' kids. I really need to slow down. After giving this (All The Mistakes I've Made) a lot of thought, I finally came up with a way to do these performance works by Daniel Cockburn after returning to his article and creating The Other Shoe (film). I did this by looking up Category:Performances, which I've added, along with Category:Film criticism. I'm not sure what else to put here, though, as the performance lectures themselves are not actually films. They sound like a lot of fun like so much he does (check out Doctor Virtuous on YouTube). Thoughts on countering vandalism

Hi Bearcat. It's probably quite presumptuous of me to consider offering you advice on ways of dealing with disruption, given how long you've been here. All my experience has been gained in the last couple of years, and so I've only ever known the current environment, so I thought that you might find it useful to have my perspective. I'd like to offer some thoughts, not in a 'this is how you should do it' way, but more in a 'this is what I have come to understand since I started editing' way - please take them, or leave them, as you see fit.

• I think that the usual approach is to start with the minimum amount of restriction, and then ramp it up if the disruption doesn't stop. The minimum amount of restriction is usually preventing a single account/IP from editing - so, a block (whether that be partial or full) for edit warring, promotion or whatever is most appropriate.
• You're correct that they can fairly easily create a new account or switch IPs and continue with the disruption. When that happens, it's time to protect the page, but we don't usually apply protection in case that happens.
• Again with the start low and ramp up if necessary - start with semi protection, then ramp up if the disruption continues, considering pending changes and ECP before going to full protection.
• An observation on IP blocks - individual IPs, and even large IP ranges, are commonly blocked for much more than a few hours or days - persistently disruptive IPs are regularly blocked for months, and I've seen situations where they are blocked for a year at a time. We don't indef IPs, and I can't think of any cases where I've seen them blocked for over a year, but I have seen situations where they have been blocked for a year, started disrupting again when the block lapses, and then been immediately reblocked for another year. Again - I'd start with a short block, but if the same IP continues disruption after the block expires, I'd impose a longer one.
• As for the 'involved' question, I am absolutely certain that there was no bad intention on your part, and you were acting to protect our content as any admin should - seriously, no question about that in my mind. Personally though, if there was a problem on a page I'd written (aside from outright 'fuck Wikipedia'-type vandalism), I'd ask another admin to look at it, just for the optics. A request at RfPP or on a noticeboard, along the lines of 'This is a problem, I think it needs whatever action, but I wrote the article so won't do it myself', would probably get a response almost immediately.

Addendum: by strange coincidence, shortly after posting the above I noticed a thread at AN (WP:AN#The_KKK_took_my_baby_away) where Drmies is talking about a two-year block on an IP range. That's a bit of a different kettle of fish - an IP-hopping racist LTA, if I read the thread correctly - but it emphasises the point that it's not controversial to apply long-term blocks to IPs if that's necessary to stop disruption. Yes, User:Girth Summit--you'll probably find more than a few such blocks in my log, but those come about because of the nature of such vandalism, and the fact that I'm a CU. It took me quite a while to start placing such long blocks, and I still feel uncomfortable doing it; I take that as a good sign. I have also become less hesitant in applying longterm semi-protection to the targets of LTAs--but again, those are really special circumstances. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 15:15, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

Small Canadian radio stations

In clearing out Category:Radio station articles without infoboxes, I found a bunch of small/First Nations/community stations that we have articles for but don't have much of any attesting material with the CRTC or Industry Canada:

• CHFL-FM
• CHWA-FM
• CIFN-FM
• CIKO-FM
• CINJ-FM
• CJBA-FM
• CJDS-FM
• CJIK-FM
• CKCP-FM
• CKTE-FM
• CKUG-FM

Natalie McMaster

Hello Bearcat! I see that you've added the category "20th-century Canadian women singers" to Natalie MacMaster. While I'm sure she can sing, it's not what she's known for, as far as I know. She is an incredible fiddler and musician, and she can stepdance, but I've seen one of her shows and I don't recall her singing. Stan VanderWerf - Wikipedia Page

Hi! Bearcat I introduced Mr. VanderWerf's page in an attempt to recognize a Military Combat Veteran who received Medals of Honor during Active Duty and then went on to contribute to society in a positive way. It so happens that his work as a Commissioner has been at the forefront of the page.

I learned from another wiki editor (and another Living Biography page) that an FOI request for his accomplishments in Military Service could be used to help with Medals of Honor citations. It looks like another wiki user requested the FOI to help. I used https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Cotton as my example and tried to structure this page like that one. I was attempting to make the page biographical.
