AOBOO Question

Hi Batard0, I see you added the overly technical tag to the AOBOO page. Can you clarify how this is the case so I can improve the page? I guess that I'm not clear on what is unclear on the page. You can respond here or on my talk page, either is fine. Thanks in advance. TylerDurden8823 (talk) 18:30, 4 October 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly Batard0. I made the recommended changes (it's still not clear to me why a short list should be reworded as prose but it's unimportant to me, it's just formatting really). I think the lead of the article breaks the subject down better and makes it more "accessible." I guess when writing articles I don't automatically think about those things since it seems lazy to me that the average reader wouldn't click on the wikilinks to get more detail about a subject (that's what I usually do if confused on a topic but it's true that not everyone wants to do this). Regardless, I think the article is a bit more thorough now and the overly dense/technical issue has been addressed sufficiently. Thanks for your input which helped lead to a better article. New Wiki-Project subproject

Automatic Strikeout and I have started a new sub-project off of the NFL Wiki-Project dedicated to referees. It can be found here. Replaceable fair use File:Cleveland Browns logo, 2006 to present.svg

Thanks for uploading File:Cleveland Browns logo, 2006 to present.svg. I noticed the description page specifies that this media item is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails the first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media item could be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media item is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the file discussion page, write the reason why this media item is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Mtking (edits) 01:17, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

further to my comments on File talk:Cleveland Browns logo, 2006 to present.svg and MRG comments on Wikipedia:Files_for_deletion/2011 December 11#File:LSU Helmet.png the helment drawing is replaceable. Mtking (edits) 02:11, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
May I recommend that you upload an image sourced directly from the team to replace this one that has been deleted, that way there is no question over where it was sourced and if it can be replaced. Mtking (edits) 01:13, 28 October 2012 (UTC)
The other one was obviously the team's logo, and the precedent set by deletion means that any other upload of the team's logo can be deleted. If your only concern was that the logo did not come directly from the team's site, why did you not say this earlier? I could have simply uploaded a replacement file linked to the website instead of going through the deletion process, which unfortunately set a precedent whereby any Browns logo is not suitable for inclusion. While you've been kind enough to notify me of the deletion process, I'm disappointed by the fact that you haven't responded to any of the substantive issues or concerns that I raised; nor did you respond to a request that it be taken to FFD to gain a broader consensus. Instead, you asked an administrator to look at the image without notifying me of that request, and the admin deleted it. Wikipedia is run by consensus, and I feel these actions (and the failure to seek a broader consensus or engage with me in a substantive discussion) run counter to its principles. --Batard0 (talk) 05:36, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
To clarify, you did say in the discussion that "If you can provide a link in the source to the being the team's website then I will remove the CSD". I provided a link to the source being the team's website, and you asked for a specific link to the file. I couldn't provide that because the file may have been removed or relocated since it was first uploaded. You never at any time said replacing the file with one uploaded from the team's website would allow it to satisfy the inclusion guidelines. --Batard0 (talk) 05:43, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
When you first approached me I did check the CB website for .svg files and could not find any, it is not a file in my experience you find used on corporate websites. If you were to upload one taken from the website - say the one found on [2] then uploaded that, it would be clear that it was totally the work of the team and then a FUR could be made for it's use. Mtking (edits) 08:27, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
I did some looking around, and I see that none of the NFL teams' logos are sourced to their teams' websites. See:
File:Cincinnati Bengals.svg (under a threshold of originality license, different)
File:Pittsburgh Steelers logo.svg (sourced to the webpage, not to a specific file, like the Browns one, but is under a PD notice, so it's different)
File:Baltimore Ravens logo.svg (only source is "may be obtained by the Baltimore Ravens", same license claims as Browns)

File:St Louis Rams logo.svg (sourced to "St. Louis Rams" with no link to the specific .svg file, same license claims as the Browns)
You'll note from this roundup that not a single NFL team has its logo sourced to a specific file on that team's website; only one of them with the same licensing as the Browns -- the Carolina Panthers -- has its logo sourced to any actual file. I know that WP:OSE, but this clearly establishes a common practice where logo images are not linked to specific files. Should all of these logos be deleted because they do not link directly to their sources? Under the WP:IUP, we have "Always specify on the description page where the image came from (the origin, sometimes called its "source") and information on how this could be verified. Examples include scanning a paper copy, or a URL, or a name/alias and method of contact for the photographer." I grant that this seems to require specifying exactly where the image file came from, but it's clear from all the NFL logo images that they routinely cite the "source" as the team -- while not specific, that, after all, is where the image originated from and where it can be verified as the team's logo. The Browns were no exception; a link to the team's website -- a website where its logo was clearly visible in several places and plainly matched the logo depicted in the file -- was provided in the image description. That went above and beyond the practice established by many other NFL logo images. So I'll ask again. What part of the WP:NFCC does the Browns logo fail to meet? Is it replaceable? No, it's plainly not, as it's been demonstrated and verified as the team's logo. Does it meet the criteria under WP:LOGO, which reflect a "long standing consensus is that it is acceptable for Wikipedia to use logos belonging to others for encyclopedic purposes"? Yes, it does. It complies with the WP:NFCC, it is a scalable vector file (and thus is not larger or smaller than is necessary), it had a detailed fair use rationale. The policy says "As well as a fair use rationale, the URL where the logo was found is useful to help verify the licensing information, copyright holder and authenticity of the logo." Note that it simply says a URL is useful to verify it, not required to do so. In this case it isn't necessary because the team's website provides a good-enough source to verify that it's in fact the logo. In sum, it would be nice if the file had been linked to directly, but this is not a firm requirement of the guidelines, nor is it standard practice for NFL logo images. Providing a link to this page where the logo is pictured only shows how easily verifiable the image is as the team's logo on the team's website. Instead of helping to resolve whatever problems there might have been through discussion and consensus, you chose to pursue deletion over my objections. You could have rectified the problem by advising me to replace the file with the one you just linked to. Yet here we are, with a precedent apparently established that any Browns logo cannot be used as its logo, since the rationale at Wikipedia:Files_for_deletion/2011 December 11#File:LSU Helmet.png has been deemed by an administrator to apply to this, even though these are clearly different cases. This precedent should be reversed and the file restored. --Batard0 (talk) 11:21, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
In the time it took to type that you could have uploaded the file sourced to the team linked above and be done with it. The precedent is that a drawing of a american football helmet is copyrightable to the person making that drawing and adding colour and/or a logo to it does not mean WP can claim a Fair Use rational over the whole work, so in this case just upload one sourced directly and verifiably to the team and there is not a problem. Mtking (edits) 19:04, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Yes, I could have easily uploaded the file sourced to the team linked above in the time it took to write this. But I think you're mischaracterizing the precedent. This is a logo, and falls under Wikipedia's policies on logos, as clearly explained above. A normal helmet drawing is not a logo; it's a drawing made by a person who holds the copyright for that drawing. That drawing may contain a depiction of the team's logo (printed on the helmet) but is not in itself a logo. It is in effect two copyrighted works: the logo on the helmet and the helmet drawing itself. The case of the Browns is different. Its logo is a normal logo under Wikipedia's logo policies, and just happens to be a depiction of the team's helmet. This is why the precedent is important, and why it shouldn't apply here. I don't see how uploading a file sourced to the team's website would negate the precedent set by the file's deletion. I reiterate that I'm disappointed that you have again not responded to the concerns I have raised, answered substantive issues about the guidelines or addressed the fact that the way the Browns logo was sourced before its deletion was consistent with standard practice for all NFL team logos. --Batard0 (talk) 19:50, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:Cleveland Browns logo, 2006 to present.svg)

Thanks for uploading File:Cleveland Browns logo, 2006 to present.svg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:24, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

Infobox NFL player discussion: Thank you

Batard, thank you for taking the time to organize the infobox template discussion on the WP:NFL talk page. This is exactly what WP:NFL needs to make informed decisions, and exactly the sort of discussion that should have been prompted before the problematic TfD was initiated. From the perspective of someone who is only an irregular participant at the TfD discussion page, this does not strike me as an unusual occurrence. There is an inherent bias among the TfD regulars to merge, consolidate and delete by creating one-size-fits-all templates. For many of them this is simply a coding exercise, with very little consideration of the resulting work and potential chaos that these consolidations cause as a practical matter. Moreover, the consolidated all-purpose templates often become large, unwieldy and are sometimes not as easy to use as templates with more specific purposes. In my personal experience, the unused and inappropriate parameters on the more complex consolidated templates sometimes invite vandalism and editor disputes over what are appropriate parameters to be used. Rookies often want to fill every blank parameter, and vandals see blank parameters as an invitation to insert something "funny." I remain skeptical whether we are solving more problems than we create. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 15:24, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

Was there a deletion discussion you could refer to? I'm not an administrator, so I couldn't reinstate it to your userspace or to the mainspace myself, but perhaps an admin would consider if you have a good case. If it was at AfD, I'd consider going to the admin who closed the discussion (this should appear at the top of the discussion page). That might be a good place to start. Matrix splitting

I see that you added a template to the top of the matrix splitting article indicating that it may be too technical for most readers to understand. This article is no more technical than most Wikipedia mathematics articles. Why was the template added? — Anita5192 (talk) 20:01, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

Talk:Jim Umbricht/GA2

I followed all your suggestions, and thanks for helping me with the review, many of these suggestions will help me in the future with both here, and with my college papers. I did left two, rather trivial comments however. Thanks Secret account 08:10, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

I think I got everything. Thanks Secret account 05:17, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

Thank you so much, I just placed that article on peer review as I felt your GA review gave the article the potential of being featured later on. I'm currently working on the Kenny Easley article that I may nominate for GA soon. Writing American football biographies are much harder than baseball biographies I noticed. Vick

Batard, Thanks for your patience with this GAR. My life has been greatly affected by a situation well beyond my control, and therefore I am not sure how much I'll be able to get done in the next several days, but rest assured that I have not forgotten about it. Thanks again,

Go Phightins! 00:01, 8 December 2012 (UTC)

Not to worry -- take your time. In the meantime I'll also do some work on it with sourcing, etc. Hope everything's well. --Batard0 (talk) 06:25, 8 December 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the notification.

Thanks for the notification about the Paul Brown coaching tree section. I was trying to add Tom Coughlin's name to the tree since Coughlin & Bill Belichick share a connection to Bill Parcells. Can you or somebody else here on Wikipedia please help me fix it? Thank you. Mr. Brain (talk) 05:07, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

You're the best. Thanks a bunch.

I noticed your changes, and yes, the ones you made will definitely suffice. Thank you for fixing the Paul Brown Tree, and for adding Tom Coughlin. Mr. Brain (talk) 15:23, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

Vick GA

Would you mind taking a quick look and offering any additional suggestions? I am still looking for a few additional sources, but I think content-wise, it's sufficient. Thanks. Go Phightins! 19:46, 21 December 2012 (UTC)
