Duplicate Auckland articles edit

Sigh. I wish you'd told me a couple of hours ago! I finished merging all those articles about twenty minutes ago. So they'll all need to be checked... not tonight, though - I've had enough of Auckland geography for one night! Grutness...wha? 10:14, 5 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

S'alright - I just decided that it looked like it needed doing, so... As for the distances, I agree. It was part of the reason I didn't put distances on the original srticles (many of which ended up duplicated or changed around). I rounded a few of A1kmm's distances to the nearest 0.1 km, but I think 0.5 would be better, if they're needed there at all. I'd have preferred to mention one or two in the text and mot have them in the tables, but I'm a bit chary about removing valid information (when it is valid) from articles. I'll give them a look tomorrow if I get time, to try to improve some of them a bit. I might just remove the population figures - it does look a bit of a mess anyway, since most suburbs are fairly amorphous and don't match up with official census units. I am trying to write a new policy Wikipedia:Wikiethics. I am very busy but believe strongly on having some standards in Wiki. Mangere edit

Hi there, just thought that the tag for auckland volcanic feild would be better suited to Mangere Mountain, which I might create sometime. There's also a need to have articles about Ihuamatou volcanic field and Puketutu Island, and others. Thanks though! Mostlyharmless 01:26, 11 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Catlins edit

Excellent! I was hoping I wasn't going to have to travel all the way to Tautuku for a view (amazingly that is almost exactly the image I wanted!). BTW, in case you haven't guessed, I'm slowly trying to get the Catlins article up to FA standard. Glad I'm not the only one working on it :) Grutness...wha? 13:20, 25 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi again - you wrote: I'm glad you like the photo. I have a few more from the Catlins that I'm not sure whether to add, but I'll try some out over the next day or two. Feel free to remove any that you feel aren't helpful.

Well, another one might be useful, but I wouldn't want to overload the article with much more than that (perhaps one of Owaka or one of the smaller settlements, and that'll be enough). BTW - I noticed that the contrast on the Tautuku and Cathedral Caves pictures was a bit dark, so I've brightened them up a bit with Photoshop (I've uploaded them as Image:View over Tautuku Bay 2a.jpg and Image:In Cathedral Caves 2.jpg and replaced the ones in the article with them - see what you think, and if you want to feel free to replace them with the other). As to the article itself I'm going to spend some time reducing the number of relinks by making a few small stub articles on places in the area. Grutness...wha? 23:28, 25 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

BTW - I'm putting the article up for Wikipedia:Peer review. I realise it's still some distance from FAC standard, but any advice from peer review on how to get it there will be welcome. Grutness...wha? 01:39, 26 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

The article looks good! I think I've done about all I can with the Catlins article now. I'll see whether AndyZ can come up with any more ideas at Peer Review - if not, it might just about be good enough to take to FAC! If you can think of anything else (especially for the extremely skinny section on government) then please do so! Grutness...wha? 10:32, 30 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi yet again... I don't suppose you've got a photo of the Nugget Point lighthouse that can be added to the "Shipwrecks" section of the Catlins article, have you? Grutness...wha? 12:03, 1 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure whether CC-BY 2.0 is permitted - that was the problem with the penguin image. Still, we'll see. This is getting very close to the point where it can be nominated now I think. I'll give it a couple more days first to see whether either of us (or someone else) can turn up anything more. Grutness...wha? 02:02, 2 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Me again :) Not entirely sure about the new position of the sections, but I'll leave it - if it's wrong someone will tell us when it goes up for FA. You forgot to switch the order of the footnotes around, BTW, so I'll do that! I'll put it up for FA tomorrow - fingers crossed! Grutness...wha? 06:30, 3 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ellis edit

The material you added about the reasons Ceci was discounted from E inquiry have been unilaterally deleted by another. If you raise restatement in 'discussion' I will support you,. Richard 06:48, 7 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

However I do note here http://www.peterellis.org.nz/docs/2000/EichelbaumCorrespondence/2000-0602_Sim_Experts-B-Letter.pdf that Ceci was only discounted BY SIM and MOJ on grounds of previous previous involvement. I'm curently looking for the "secret memo" that provides E's reasons. Richard 09:54, 7 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

The memo makes it clear that E discounted on the other grounds that you cited as well, the reasons are referred to in the Thorp section, I have just added ref there to the file note. Your info may have been removed solely to avoid duplication? I hope I haven't caused you to rush to print. Richard 10:19, 7 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

I wish to convey my appreciation for your effort in improving above article, especially for your willingness to read original sources etc. The case is, to me at least, absorbing. The more one delves the more one shakes one's head in disbelief. Richard 11:48, 16 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think the London et al ref from NZ researcher is already in the article references. Just no footnote. I'm unsure of convention needed. Richard 10:37, 8 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Can you help with the copyright defn of photo on Ellis page that I uploaded. It seems that it will be deleted in a few days. That is silly as I'm sure the image will never cause any trouble and the historical use grounds seem highly appropriate. Richard 10:44, 15 July 2006 (UTC) Many thanks, the original caption will have been the editor of Ellis site's pages, he may have been mistaken, I will ask him and advise of response. I assumed it was 1993 because that was the trial date and it looks like Ellis is dressed for that. He wouldn't normally wear a tie! Richard 12:35, 15 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

The Lord of the Rings edit

First of all I would like to thank you for the ways you stated which I could use to imrpove the article. I believe that they have been generally fixed now. The size of the article is down to 43KB of prose, a large cut and the fixs to adaptations which you suggest fixed. If you believe more needs cutting please say so on the FAC page and I will attempt do so. The Back story problem has been fixed with a longer lead however this may now break WP:LEAD. For further information on this see the FAC page. And for the addition of references I am in the process of adding them throughtout the article and if possible I will address all of yours. Finally the maps you suggested have been added. At any rate please take the time to look at the article once more, comments on the situation with the lead, and even reconsider your oppose. Regarding edits to Metro Detroit edit

Before editing pages with American populations, I would recommend reviewing the differences between a "Metropolitan Statistical Area" and a "Combined Statistical Area". Though they were renamed a few years ago (from "Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area" and "Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area" respectively); both entities still exist and are used by the U.S. Census Bureau. In the case of Metro Detroit, the MSA consists of six counties and the CSA consists of nine counties. -- KelleyCook 21:01, 21 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hurricane Katrina edit

In case you haven't noticed, I thought I'd let you know. Our actionable objections regarding the Hurricane Katrina article were completely ignored and the article was given featured status. There's a big problem in Wikiville. --Jayzel 17:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Avenue, I am requesting your support regarding my argument at "Time to vote for a new monitor of FAs" on the Featured article discussion page. This is just so wrong. We have to put a stop to this. Gather up any friends you have here at Wikipedia if you could. We cannot let the rules of Wikipedia subvert NPOV no matter what we think. --Jayzel 03:14, 24 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • I came also to ask about Katrina. I had been away for a few days and I couldn't work on the article, but now I'm reluctant to make changes until it has been decided what exactly to bring from the subpages, as other editors were opposed to making changes. I'd like to ask you to continue a civil discussion on the Katrina talk page, but please, give us specific details to address. Generalities are too broad to fix. Mason et al edit

Hi, you altered Supervolcano to reflect that the La Garita Caldera eruption was a "vei-9" based upon the paper you cited by Mason et al [1] (which is a pretty nifty paper for this subject). It appears to me that the magnitude-9 ("M9") referred to in their paper is a magnitude based upon the mass of the eruption whereas the VEI scale is based upon the volume (the line in the paper is "A logarithmic magnitude scale of eruption size is applied, based on erupted mass, to these events"). They also include a volume which appears to me to fit the description in VEI for a VEI-8 event. I was hoping you could review this for me to make sure I haven't gotten it all backwards :-). And thanks for referencing such an excellent paper -- it makes researching topics like this easy. -- Cjensen 06:58, 27 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Comparison of American football and rugby union edit

This article started as Comparison of American football and rugby which is why there were references to rugby league in it. Following advice I decided to create seperate league and union articles and thus moved the one article to the present title and deleted references to league. I am going to delete any references to league in the union article to try to keep things simple.GordyB 12:27, 22 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
