Dollar equivalent for £30 in 1840 edit

Just a note on the $3000 figure. I got this by chaining together the NZ CPI Inflation Calculator (which goes back to 1862) and this UK relative value calculator (going from 1840 to 1862), which gave a range of figures from $2800 to $4350 depending on which index was used for the UK calculation. The lowest figure seemed to be based on the most comparable index to the CPI, and I rounded this to $3000. -- Avenue 05:28, 26 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Frogs at Lake Wilkie in the Catlins

Can anyone identify the tiny frogs that live around Lake Wilkie? The photo on the right is poorly focused; see the photo here (on the bottom right) for a sharper one. I doubt that they're the world's smallest, as the caption there says, but they are quite small - maybe 15-20 mm (<1 in) in body length. -- Avenue 13:50, 17 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Distance from Purakaunui Falls to Owaka edit

The caption for the Purakaunui Falls photo states that it lies 17 km (27 mi) from Owaka, this is clearly a mistake. 17 miles is roughly 27 km, however the Purakaunui Falls article gives the distance as 17 km (11 mi).DJIndica 01:39, 18 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Size of article edit

This excellent article is already reaching an unwieldy size. I would suggest that some of the longer sections could become separate articles with tightly written summaries in their place in this article. Comments? Sunray 15:14, 18 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

I agree it's getting a bit too long for its current structure, and it would be worth trying a few section summaries with links to separate articles. Geography, History and Natural history are probably the ones to start with, although I think this should wait until the article's off the main page and we no longer have to deal with all the vandalism. -- Avenue 16:38, 18 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

I have noticed a definite error and a possible omission in this article: the Southland District Council has twelve elected ward members (plus a mayor), not fourteen; and, while the small townships Waikawa and Fortrose are mentioned, the larger township of Tokanui, near those other towns, is not. MMM. you seem to be right about the councillors, though I keep getting runtime errors when I try to access the SDC's site. It needs checking anyway. You're probably right about Tokanui - it should be there and I'll add it in.

The New Zealand Gazette of 2009, page 1500, prints an official definition of the area to be considered The Catlins. This area is: "Defined generally by the coastline from Nugget Point to Slope Point, then extending inland through F47 GR 981 927, F47 GR 969 057, F46 GR 990 140, F46 GR 052 268, G46 GR 149 300, G46 GR 263 268, G46 GR 339 325, H46 GR 514 251, H46 GR 538 255, H46 GR 589 232, H46 GR 582 202, H46 GR 620 148, ending at Nugget Point." These grid references relate, in order, to these approximate locations: a point about 1 km south south-west of the intersection of Graham Road and Morrison Road, south of Tokanui; a point about 1.5 km west of the intersection of Braid Road and Carswell Road, north of Tokanui; a point about 2 km east south-east of Flamborough Head, east of Glenham; a point about 1.5 km east of the intersection of Venlaw Road and Thornhill Road, east of Waiarikiki; a point about 0.5 km north-east of Centre Hill, north of the Slopedown Forest; a point about 8 km west of the intersection of Slopedown Road and Cairn Road, west of Purekireki; a point about 1.5 km south-east of Waiwera Cone, north of Purekireki; a point about 1.5 km east north-east of the intersection of Puerua Valley Road and Wilson Road, north of Glenomaru; a point about 1.3 km south of the intersection of Puerua Valley Road and Puerua Church Road, south of Puerua; a point about 0.8 km east south-east of the intersection of Owaka Highway and Port Molyneux Road, east of Romahapa; a point about 1.3 km south-west of the intersection of Brookdale Road and Rose Valley Road, west of Kaka Point; and a point about 2.5 km east of the intersection of Ahuriri Flat Road and Cannibal Bay Road, east of Otekura.Daveosaurus (talk) 08:38, 28 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I think calling this an "official definition" is too strong, as it was in the "Notice of Proposal to Assign or Alter Place Names" section. The NZ Geographic Board produced a summary report in September 2009 after submissions on the proposal closed. (The original proposal and summary report can be found at this link, including a map of the boundaries suggested.) I gather they still haven't made a definite ruling, but they seem to accept the arguments made for extending the western boundary at least as far as Fortrose. --Avenue (talk) 14:42, 16 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

I've just noticed that an official boundary for the Catlins was gazetted on 4 Feb 2010 (notice no. 750, p. 313),[1] so the article will need to be updated, and probably the detailed map too. --Avenue (talk) 12:55, 22 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
