Welcome to the project
editI wanted to point you to a small set of artworks that I've recently mapped quite accurately. Click on the "Map all coords" link at the top of this page List of public art at the Indiana Statehouse. I also know a lot of mapping work has been done on this project List of public art in Washington, D.C.. Here's hoping you find some fun things to do mapping public art. I have a few ideas for upcoming projects that I'd be happy to discuss. Best --RichardMcCoy (talk) 17:14, 23 December 2010 (UTC)
Did you send the list yet?
editI noticed you made a couple edits today so I wanted to ask if you had a chance to send the list yet? --Kumioko (talk) 22:20, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
- Sent it right now and CC-ed the Smithsonian staff person, should you have questions. I can try to help with questions too. Once I'm done moving & settled, I should have some more time to help with WP:GLAM/SI and the LOC project (thanks for setting it up!) --Aude (talk) 22:26, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
- PS - are you coming to our meetup on Sunday, Wikipedia:Meetup/DC_14? if so, User:Edsu might be there. He works at LOC and is a good person to talk to. If you can't make it, I'm sure he will be at other meetups or we can setup a (non-meetup) time to meet with him. --Aude (talk) 22:28, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah I should be there, Looking forward to it. --Kumioko (talk) 22:33, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
- Its partly done. See here. The other group has some issues. There are some with Mr. and Mrs. in the names and some other small things I need to work out later but I should have that out there tomorrow. Have a good night I'm off to class. --Kumioko (talk) 22:51, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
- I forgot to ask do you want me to tag all 6000+ with the SI banner? Its not a problem I jsut wanted to ask for clarification. We might also want to clarify what and if they should be in for the SI related categories. --Kumioko (talk) 22:52, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
- Wow! You're awesome and quick! :) Do you think we should tag the articles with SI banner? [I'm really not sure] Does that put them into a category? Perhaps, they should go in a subcategory? or maybe Category:Smithsonian Archives of American Art? I'm not quite sure how to do that with the banner. --Aude (talk) 23:03, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry it took a bit to respond. Yes if we tag them with the SI banner they will be put into Category:Smithsonian Institution-related articles by quality/Category:Smithsonian Institution-related articles by importance as appropriate. This will not only allow the project visibility of what the status of the article is and its importance to the SI it is also how many of the bots (like articlealertbot) determine which articles fall into the scope of a project for notification purposes. Article alertbot will tell the project if the article is up for deletion, discussion, merge with another article, GA review, FA review and a few more things. Other bots do other things. We can also add to one of the subcategories located under Category:Smithsonian Institution such as Smithsonian Institution people. Depending on the article we may need to create a new article for Smithsonian Institution artists (or something that's just an example). I'm not sure what all the articles are for. I hope this helps but please let me know if you need anything else. --Kumioko (talk) 04:07, 30 December 2010 (UTC)

Another group done
editI just saved another group of articles (about 5500) so that brings us down to about 500 that still need to be linked. This time I added them to a table to make it easier to work with. Here are a couple of things that I have noticed regarding these links.
- There seems to be quite a few that already have articles, which is good but we will probably need to add some redirect pages to some of the existing ones
- We will need to add some to DAB pages
- Some of the articles need to be associated to the links because they have been dismabiguated. A good example of this is William Wegman. The link from the SI just says William Wegner which is a DAB page. I assume that the William Wegner they are referring too is the photographer so the link would need to be William Wegman (photographer). Since I don't know for sure I left it as the DAB link.
- I am not sure if all of the links they provided will be suitable for articles. Some appear to be benefactors or donors to the museum such as X Family.
- There is no context for the names so we have no way to know if they are a sculpture, painter, photogropher, etc. This becomes necessary when you get into the common names like John Smith and the like.
- We still need to decide if we want to add a category or something or just use this page to track them.
Thats it for know. See you Sunday. --Kumioko (talk) 18:47, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
- Awesome work!!! :) Agree that not all need articles (e.g. benefactors)... notability applies, of course. For categories, it seems okay to put the banner on. We also want a subcategory so we can identify within this subset (artists, etc.), which articles are high importance & low quality. If they were mixed with everything else, that gets more difficult. Without looking at things in more detail, I can't say for sure what the best approach is. --Aude (talk) 20:41, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
- I will start working on the tagging in the next day or 2. Do you have any suggestions for the Category? I was thinking something like Articles of interest to the Smithsonian Institution but I'm not exactly sure since I haven't been actively engaged for a while. --Kumioko (talk) 00:51, 31 December 2010 (UTC)

Talk about Public Policy Initiative at WikiXDC
editHey, Aude. Annie Lin forwarded me a message saying you were interested in someone talking about the PPI at this event. If you still need someone just let me know. Thanks! Pjthepiano (talk) 04:55, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
- I think Sage will also be there, so if the two of you together can talk about PPI, that would be awesome. Sage on the program as a whole and your perspective as a campus ambassador. Cheers. --Aude (talk) 14:41, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
- Sounds good. Just let me know what time, where, and how long I should be prepared to speak. Thanks! Pjthepiano (talk) 20:05, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
- We have the PPI lightning talk "Sage Ross and Pjthepiano on Wikimedia Public Policy Initiative" in the 2:40 - 3:30 PM session. It's ~10 minutes per talk or shorter + time for questions. (We also have a newbie session scheduled for 1:30 - 2:30 PM., if you want to assist User:MichChemGSI with that) Cheers. --Aude (talk) 21:54, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

New Years Message for WikiProject United States
editWith the first of what I hope will be monthly newsletters I again want to welcome you to the project and hope that as we all work together through the year we can expand the project, create missing articles and generally improve the pedia thought mutual cooperation and support. Now that we have a project and a solid pool of willing members I wanted to strike while the iron is hot and solicite help in doing a few things that I believe is a good next step in solidifiing the project. I have outlined a few suggestions where you can help with on the projects talk page. This includes but is not limited too updating Portal:United States, assessing the remaining US related articles that haven't been assessed, eliminating the Unrefernced BLP's and others. If you have other suggestions or are interested in doing other things feel free. I just wanted to offer a few suggestions were additional help is needed. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, comments or suggestions or you can always post something on the projects talk page. --Kumioko (talk) 02:36, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
Wiki-Ten DC (lunch?)
editI see that a lunch break is scheduled. Should we bring our own or is there a place to purchase on-site or nearby? Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 22:11, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
- We might be providing lunch. Otherwise, there are plenty of places nearby for people to go. Check back on the tenwiki page tenwiki:Washington, D.C. for updates. Cheers. --Aude (talk) 00:39, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

editAude,
Thanks for all your help on the fundraiser. Your feedback was invaluable to our decision making process. I really hope you'll stay active in the process for future fundraisers; you're always an asset to us. So once again, thanks for helping to make this fundraiser so successful. Hi!
editHey you! Great event yesterday and I look forward to working with you on some events, activities and projects! I have posted photos on the 10 page WikiXDC Photos, feel free to play! They're on Commons under a category I created "Wikipedia 10 Washington D.C.". Kumioko sent me the list that the museum put together, lots of stuff - all over the place. I'd also like to talk to you about looking into a summer internship (asap) for a wikipedian-in-residence. It needs to happen, so let's do this! :) Missvain (talk) 22:28, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
- Congratulations on a success of a day, I am sad that I had to miss it, Sadads (talk) 23:48, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
- Sadads - sad you could be there but look forward to working with you once you are back.
- Missvain - totally awesome to finally meet you and look forward to working with you. I'll follow up with Smithsonian Archive of American Art, and we need to setup another meeting with them and perhaps brown bag lunch for them sometime soon. --Aude (talk) 01:01, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
- I heard you all are running forward with the DC bid. If we get it, I would really like to run some type of event related to the Ambassador program event, and I think if we talk with Liam, it might also be a good opportunity to do a training for GLAM Ambassadors as well, because of the number of Wikipedians we would be able to draw to DC (I would bet well over 500, probably closer to 1000). I can't commit to any time with you on the bid right now, but come next fall and spring if we get it, I have significantly more time opening up, after grad school applications and the like open up, Sadads (talk) 02:02, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
- Even if you can't commit time now but want to be supportive, please sign up at meta:Wikimania_2012/Bids/Washington,_D.C.. Of course, we will want ambassador training for 2012, and I think something for this summer in Haifa too. --Aude (talk) 02:05, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
- I would like to try and help with the Bid too but Im not sure how much time I can dedicate to it. I added my name to the list though so please let me know if you think there is a spot I can help with. I noticed one of the suggested Venues was American. I'm not sure if anyone signed up to research this one but I know some people that might be able to help with this. If you want me to I will ask them if they might be interested, what we might need to do and who we would need to contact if you want. Just a suggestion but I think for colleges we should plan a date in the summer when everyones out on break. --Kumioko (talk) 04:13, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
- Check with User:Harej about American University, as he's a student there. Still, it might be good to brainstorm about who at the university is best to ask. And, yes we would aim for holding the event in July or August. --Aude (talk) 04:16, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

SI template
editI went and made a few changes to the template as you requested. Here is the link Template:WikiProject Smithsonian Institution-related/sandbox. I didn't add independant importance for the task force but if you want me to I can. I can see where there may be cases were a piece of art is more important to the Task force than to the project as a whole. Its a fair bit of work though so I wanted to ask before I just went and did it. Also, do you want me to add parameters to the template for Image needed, Infobox needed or Attention, (or something else)? You can see what these look like (as well as the independant importance) by look at {{WikiProject United States}}. These changes are just in the templates sandbox but once you give me the blessing we can copy it over and go live with it. Please let me know if you need me to do anything else. --Kumioko (talk) 04:03, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
- I think that looks good. What you say about importance makes sense. If we find we need something more later, we can always consider adding it later. Thanks. --Aude (talk) 04:06, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
- Ok Ill get that done tomorrow. I'm an old man so I gotta go get my beauty sleep. --Kumioko (talk) 04:14, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

Arlington National Cemetery Task Force
editHey! I'm going to talk to the WP:Public Art team about forming a separate page (not on the DC page) for an Arlington National Cemetery Task Force. I have written a few articles so far: Theodore Wint Grave, McKee Grave, William_Worth_Belknap#Legacy and Benjamin_F._Kelley#Death. I think one of the first goals should be to create a list (like my DC lits and our Indy list) regarding notable works in the cemetery. Thoughts? Missvain (talk) 19:18, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

RE: 2011 Egyptian protests
editAre you sure that the ref needs to be taken out? Does mess with the rest of the article? does the other sources cover every aspect of that part? you see where I am going here. Beside, edit wars. -- The Egyptian Liberal (talk) 01:12, 11 February 2011 (UTC)
- I think the last sentence there is covered, "In some neighborhoods, civilians had taken on the role of providing security themselves" (time) and "looting has prompted residents in some neighbourhoods...to set up vigilante groups to protect private property" (Al Jazeera). The Seattle Times ref is marginally useful. The Fox News doesn't directly support the article text, and World Tribune isn't adequate as a reliable source nor really supports the article text. We should strive to include the best quality, most reliable refs. I see the previous sentences don't have refs so maybe we should move some or find refs to cover those. And overall, I think the article can use copyedits to make things more concise. --Aude (talk) 01:36, 11 February 2011 (UTC)

Wikimania 2012 bid, DC chapter & next meetup!
edit- At WikiXDC in January, User:Harej proposed that DC submit a bid to host Wikimania 2012. A bid and organizing committee is being formed and seeks additional volunteers to help. Please look at our bid page and sign up if you want to help out. You can also signup for the bid team's email list.
- To support the Wikimania bid, more events like WikiXDC, and outreach activities like collaborations with the Smithsonian (ongoing) and National Archives, there also has been discussion of forming Wikimedia DC, as an official Wikimedia chapter. You can express interest and contribute to chapter discussions on the Wikimedia DC Meta-Wiki pages.
- To discuss all this and meet up with special guest, Dutch Wikipedian User:Kim Bruning, there will be a meetup, Wikipedia:Meetup/DC 16 this Tuesday at 7pm, at Capitol City Brewery, Metro Center. There will be a pre-meetup Wikimania team meeting at 6pm at the same location.
Apologies for the short notice for the meetup. Stay tuned for more meetups and activities this spring, and join wikimedia-dc mailing list for more announcements and discussion. Cheers, User:Aude (talk)

Haha, so I just discovered a crazy coincidence. Long ago I'd saved this DC Homicides map and referred to it frequently over the years but I had no idea where I'd found it. I even posted it as a sticky page on my blog because it was so useful. And just now I went looking for the source and found out it was you.
Anyway, like I said it's extremely useful. I always wanted to find an updated version, though. How hard was it to make? Is the data still available? I know you're busy with Wikimedia and other things, but do you have any interest in producing another?
--Qwerty0 (talk) 17:49, 23 March 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, I should make an updated one and in SVG format. Right now, I'm compiling map data (from OSM and DC GIS) to make new maps, of all types, and could do a new one for this. For our Wikimania bid, we need nice maps of Georgetown, the campus, the neighborhood, and the city. Cheers. --Aude (talk) 18:47, 23 March 2011 (UTC)
- Oooh alright, well that'd be awesome to see. Both for the articles and me ;)
Going to the library....
editChesapeake Bay is now the collaboration, it'd be great to get material from library books that have info which is not online. There ain't much on US natural history in my neck of the woods :/ Casliber (talk · contribs) 21:34, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

GLAM questions
editHello, I recently contacted the Balboa Park Online Collaboration in San Diego about image donations. I was surprised that in this last week they have changed the permission on the Flickr page for one of their museums to release 100k images with "no restrictions". As you're more familiar with the GLAM setup, where do I need to go to help set up the batch uploading for Commons? I'm also planning to meet with them in person next week about potential other images or research. Do we have an introduction to Wikipedia/GLAM presentation, brochure, etc. available for use? If I'm not asking the right person, if you could point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talk • contrib) 03:05, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
- Wow, that sounds excellent! :) I think Liam Wyatt (User:Witty lama) visited the Balboa Park folks last fall, but not sure if they are the same people you contacted. I suggest emailing Liam -- Special:Emailuser/Witty_lama should work or you can email me Special:Emailuser/Aude and I'll forward it.
- He's also most likely to have slides or materials, though coming up with better materials I think is one of the tasks for meta:GLAMcamp_NYC. Cheers. --Aude (talk) 16:47, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
- (p.s. You know about GLAMcamp? Would you be interested & able to attend? WMF can cover the travel costs. Liam is handling that, as well)
- Thanks, I sent him an e-mail. I would definitely be interested in an event like that, but unfortunately it's coming up too quick with work. I'll keep an eye out for future events as that seems to be constructive in further developing GLAM. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talk • contrib) 03:11, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

Wikipedia / Wikimedia / GLAM Project partnership with new WikiQueer project?
editGreetings, I am the SysOp and public representative for a new Wiki project, WikiQueer, specifically for the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning) communities that supplements the LGBTQ content on Wikipedia with other resources, talking points and information pertaining to the LGBTQ population. We will be soft launching in the next few days with a grand opening later this year. I am very interested in partnering and supporting Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Foundation in whatever ways we can. A number of international, national and local nonprofit organizations and community leaders have already signed onto the project or are preparing to publicly join in the coming months.
I am hoping that as an ambassador and participant in the GLAM project you can help us navigate a possible partnership. We're especially keen on helping convey that we support Wikipedia and are trying to expand on and enhance that experience rather than challenge or compete. Any feedback on the WikiQueer project itself is also appreciated. We're also actively seeking individuals within or supportive of queer communities to join our Global Advisory Board if you or others you know may be interested.
Thank you in advance for your time and I appreciate all of the great work you and other Wikipedians are doing!!
PS. Totally unrelated, but I love that on the top of this talk page you put that you "may or may not" respond to rude comments. :) --Varnent (talk) 03:09, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

FedFlix links in NARA catalog
editHi Katie. This proposal is slowly moving forward. One thing that will be helpful to NARA would be to have a list of all the FedFlix videos hosted on IA or Commons that should be linked to. One big question is whether they are already described in the catalog (have ARC IDs) or not. If not, it's possible that the staff will be entering new item-level descriptions for them; hopefully they are described well enough to do that. Ideally, we'd have a table of all the video URLs and their associated ARC IDs (or a note if they are not cataloged yet) for the staff at NARA to work off of to make links in the catalog. I think the videos on Commons are all clearly marked with their IDs in {{FedFlix}}/{{NARA-image}}, but it may be harder to extract such data from IA. Do you think you could work on making such a table? Dominic·t 19:45, 11 August 2011 (UTC)
- Good to hear progress on this. I can work on this in the next couple days. Cheers. --Aude (talk) 20:25, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

editHello! This is a note to let the main editors of this article know that it will be appearing as the main page featured article on September 11, 2011. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/September 11, 2011. If you think it is necessary to change the main date, you can request it with the featured article directors Raul654 (talk · contribs) or his delegate Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), or at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/requests. If the previous blurb needs tweaking, you might change it—following the instructions of the suggested formatting. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page so Wikipedia doesn't look bad. :D Thanks! American Airlines Flight 11 was American Airlines' morning, daily scheduled transcontinental flight, from Logan International Airport in Boston, Massachusetts to Los Angeles International Airport in Los Angeles, California. On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, the aircraft flying this route—a Boeing 767-223ER—was hijacked by five al-Qaeda terrorists, and deliberately crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City, as part of the September 11 attacks. Fifteen minutes into the flight, the hijackers forcibly breached the cockpit, and overpowered the pilot and first officer. Mohamed Atta, an al-Qaeda member and trained pilot, took over the controls. Air traffic controllers noticed the flight was in distress when the crew stopped responding to them. They realized the flight had been hijacked when Atta mistakenly transmitted announcements for passengers to air traffic control. On board, Amy Sweeney and Betty Ong contacted American Airlines, and provided information about the hijackers and injuries to passengers and crew. The aircraft crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center at 08:46 local time; the impact killed all 92 people aboard. Many people in the streets witnessed the collision, and the Naudet brothers captured the impact on video, as did Pavel Hlava, along with Fox 8 news reporter Mark Burnback. The impact and subsequent fire caused the North Tower to collapse, which resulted in thousands of additional casualties. During the recovery effort at the World Trade Center site, workers recovered and identified dozens of remains from Flight 11 victims, but many other body fragments could not be identified. (more...)

Monmouthpedia
editHi Aude
I got your name from the Glam volunteers sign up. I started WP:GLAM/MonmouthpediA we really want to do a nature trail. Basically I want to create a trail on google maps or open streetmap with a line and place markers with embeded wikipedia article summaries within this like the geocoded wikipedia articles layer on google maps
I've got a little way, I've started my own google map, created a route, and in the placemark you can add html but don't know where to go from here http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?msid=213722714220813960548.0004b12da520b2632ff4d&msa=0&ll=51.820501,-2.70525&spn=0.038199,0.098963
Yours hopefully

DCLUG on WP-MIRROR
editHi Aude! I just checked the DCLUG website, and it announces the meeting topic for Wed. Dec. 21 , and it is about WP-MIRROR, a new software released under GPLv3 that lets you make a local mirror of Wikipedia. The author of that software will make a talk about it. I realize it may be too late for you, but I thought you would like to know about such stuff. And feel free to pass the word along. Have happy holidays! --TheBlueWizard (talk) 03:44, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks! I can't attend the meeting but am aware of WP-MIRROR, but can make sure he knows about Wikimania. Cheers! --Aude (talk) 01:15, 22 December 2011 (UTC)
Request for your perspective on SOPA
editHi Aude, there's currently an ongoing discussion about splitting the Stop Online Piracy Act page at Talk:Stop_Online_Piracy_Act#ONGOING_DISCUSSION_-_Splitting_the_Article. You've familiarized yourself with the entry before, and your insight and perspective on the matter would be appreciated. Hope to see you there, Sloggerbum (talk) 00:11, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
