Replaceable fair use Image:Gaetano Scirea.jpg edit

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Gaetano Scirea.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Recent Edit edit

I reverted an edit I saw on Siurgus Donigala as it appeared to be vandalism. If I was wrong, please feel free to redo your edit. DustiSPEAK!! 15:44, 15 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Mosmof (talk) 02:24, 5 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Pilote crumb cover.jpg) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Pilote crumb cover.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. Muhammad al-Idrisi edit

I note that you removed an "unreferenced-section" tag from Muhammad al-Idrisi with the edit summary "OK". That paragraph was part of this edit, the rest of which was removed for copyright violation. (I got involved because I had previously spent an hour wikifying one of the same contributor's new articles, before it got deleted for copyvio.) This still includes the WP:PEACOCK sentence that "He was so remarkable that he was nicknamed the strobe of the Arabs" -- and I am not sure what the latter means anyway. If it is supported by the journal citations given at the foot of the article, please would you make in-line citations linking these claims to the supporting references? - Fayenatic (talk) 21:47, 7 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Franco Sacchetti edit

Ciao! edit

So good to hear from old friends! I looked over it and applied some minor touches. The tag was really an overstatement, as it is a rather good article - stub size considered, that is. Perhaps you may want to rephrase "costume analysis" - see my hidden comment in the text.

Btw, you may have noticed that I had spruced up Giuseppe Ungaretti. Another editor removed the article from the "Italian fascists" category where I had placed it - my knowledge of Ungaretti is quite limited, but I based myself on the fact that the man had signed a fascist manifesto, was recognized as a fascist before WWII and exposed as a fascist after WWII, and because, with "clinical" hindsight, saying that this was the case is not saying that much. To clarify my latter statement: Italian fascism was the least and, for long, the most liberal of 20th century totalitarianisms; it created an intellectual fashion which took hold of many seemingly intelligent people, but when it led them astray, it didn't lead them as far astray as being a Nazi, Stalinist or a Maoist. Yes, Italian fascism too is very objectionable, but the common fallacy according to which calling a [former] fascist activist a fascist is non-politically correct strikes me as an odd notion to carry on wikipedia. I mean, it would be wrong to list either George Bush or Osama bin Laden "fascists" - in such cases, it is a polemical POV term and nothing more -, but why should Ungaretti, who, as far as I can tell, voluntarily endorsed fascism as a grown-up in an era of political freedom, not be known for this aspect of his life as well (especially given that he is known as such to many Italian sources I had no trouble finding)? Is it because he was also a good writer? So were Marinetti, Malaparte, not to say Sartre, Heidegger and Eliade - a blunt mention of what these people did, even as a "political hobby", should be alright, shouldn't it?

(Incidentally, I'm doing reading on a completely different issue, that of avant-garde in 1920s Romania. Even a Contimporanul issue from the period, cited by one more recent source, casually mentions Ungaretti among a young generation of fascist writers/journalists.)

In any case, maybe I am missing something in the picture. That's why I thought it best to ask you to approve or disprove my argument and how it relates to Ungaretti, because this may be wider debate than I am capable of seeing at the moment, and yes, because I may be entirely wrong. Please lemme know one way or the other. Best, Dahn (talk) 10:04, 19 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the quick response. I'm going to look into the other article (though I'm sure your French is better than my "understand-only" Italian), but now I have to be signing out - will do so next time around (say, tonight). I'm also going to elaborate on the Ungaretti issue on the article talk page, so I don't leave the other editor clueless about my rationale (s/he has been awaiting my reply on these issues for months now). Dahn (talk) 10:48, 19 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

No content in Category:Provincial elections in Italy edit

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Category:Provincial elections in Italy, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Category:Provincial elections in Italy has been empty for at least four days, and its only content has been links to parent categories. (CSD C1).

Quick translation edit

Hello, Attilios. I did a quick search of WikiProject Italy and you were one of the first names to come up so I decided to ask you for a favor. On the International reaction to the 2008 United States presidential election article there are a list of responses from nations. I have found a response from San Marino, but unfortunately I do not speak Italian. Would you mind translating the first paragraph or so from this source? Here is the source = [1]. Please reply with translation (if you choose to do so) on my talkpage. Grazie! --Tocino 07:20, 6 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello!
You edited this page a couple of days ago, but I'm not sure from your edit history what you did. Have you moved the passage to a separate page? Or put it somewhere else? Or just deleted it? Moonraker12 (talk) 16:29, 26 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Just to let you know; I (at last!) put this stuff on its own page at Privilege of St Romain, but don't have any source for it. It was in the Rouen page for about 4 years (added anonymously on 26 feb 2004)! Moonraker12 (talk) 11:20, 22 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Bianca Riario edit

Salve, I have noticed your work on the Bianca Maria Visconti article. I am also interested in the Sforza family and have created several articles on various Sforza women. The latest is Bianca Riario. Would you please be so kind as to look it over and see if you could perhaps add a bit more information. I notice that you are Italian. Most information on Bianca is in Italian. I live in Italy, and can read and speak Italian sufficiently, but some of the information on Bianca is hard to follow Thank you.--jeanne (talk) 17:44, 5 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Attilios, thank you so much for your edits to the Bianca Riario article. It looks much better now. Don't you think we should leave the image of Caterina Sforza? At least until I can locate an image of Bianca which is free? I checked Commons but they dont have any images of her. The medallion of her would be good to use, if I could upload it to Commons. Thank you again for your help.--jeanne (talk) 12:26, 6 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Palma edit

Hi! Please note Palma the Elder is just not correct in English - Palma Vecchio is normal. Same for Palma Giovane - see for example This is English usage, not Italian - please respect it! Don't tell me the names don't make sense in Italian either. Johnbod (talk) 14:30, 8 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

English is its own language, and its usages are not "errors", even if they would be in Italian. You have to come to terms with this - no doubt Italian usage of English terms includes similar "errors", but that does not mean English people should start "correcting" them on Italian WP. Johnbod (talk)

My dear Attilios! edit

So nice to receive your friendly message! I was wondering if you were still somewhere on the planet! I have been working very hard at painting and so on, and have not had so much time to write.

I know you will not love me for this, but Johnbod is right. Palma Vecchio has been called by that simplified version of his name, in English, ever since the 18th or 19th century...so that is the customary use in English. Likewise Palma Giovane, also known as Jacopo Palma.

I suggest that you respect this silliness and bloodymindedness in the English, simply because you must respect the nation that gave the world football, the BBC and a law that says you are innocent unless proven guilty.

You could come to a nice agreement with Johnbod to have redirects from the Italian version of each name, I'm sure! Amandajm (talk) 01:15, 9 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Melfi edit

Hi Attilios, back in 2006 you wrote in the Melfi article that the First Crusade was summoned there in 1089. I've just removed that because it is definitely not true, but I was wondering where you got that information from? A Lonely Planet travel guide for Melfi says the same thing, and since it was published in 2006 I thought maybe either you got it from them, or they took it from Wikipedia. (Another user is now attempting to use the Lonely Planet guide as a source to add that same info to the First Crusade article, which is what led me back to you.) Lesena edit

I cannot think what the English translation would be. Amandajm (talk) 09:15, 12 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Just editting your church articles, and I saw where you needed the right word. The term "compartment" can be used in a general way. The word "bay" is also applied to the space between two columns, or two pilasters, attached columns etc. In a church, a "bay" is the entire space, both wall space and three dimensional space, between two columns or piers. Amandajm (talk) 09:54, 12 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, the application of that word is very much wider in English. We would say that a jewellry box is divided into compartments, and that the brain of a well-organised and pernicketty person was divided into compartments. Good work on the churches! There must be a pic somewhere of the centrally planned one. Amandajm (talk) 10:03, 12 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Attilios! I'm glad that you and Johnbod are being nice and friendly! I will take a little look at your articles as well! You are doing a wonderful job. License tagging for File:Palepoli.JPG edit

Thanks for uploading File:Palepoli.JPG. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

Assessments and a warning edit

I recently got onto the architecture project page and took a look at which buildings etc are rated "Top" priority. What I discovered was that lots of American architectural firms and 19th/20th century architects were rated "top", while a great many buildings of such high importance that they appear in every text book, were missing. My efforts were greeted with "What's the point? Why bother?" But I think that the assessments are a good way of identifying what work needs doing in certain areas. You are doing a wonderful job on Italy's fantastic churches. On the other hand, Attilios, art theft from Italian churches is rife, so unless you know a building is well protected, it is not a good idea to publish the location of small precious sculptures and paintings by very famous names. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Solaris Chichoni.jpg) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Solaris Chichoni.jpg.

You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 07:33, 15 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading File:Madonna_Cherubin_Mantegna.jpg. You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Speedy deletion of File:Castelgrande-Stemma.gif edit

A tag has been placed on File:Castelgrande-Stemma.gif requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:File:Castelgrande-Stemma.gif|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Pope John Paul II edit

Hi Attilios, I am working on the Pope John Paul II article in order to improve it and raise it to ‘Good Article’ and hopefully ‘Featured Article’ status. The article is currently in Pier Review. I thought you might be interested. Kind Regards Marek.69 talk 05:07, 25 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Attilios! edit

St. Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney

Happy New Year!

Today is Australia Day. In my town thousands of people have picnics on the beach or overlooking the boat harbour. There will be a big fireworks display. We really love our fireworks! I must go to bed soon as it is after midnight and I must take my brother out to lunch tomorrow. But I will look at your article first.

Thank you for the hugs! Amandajm (talk) 13:49, 25 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

You are right of course, but you will have to admit that is is one of the most exquisite pieces of Gothic Revival architecture on the planet. Amandajm (talk) 13:59, 25 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

I've seen pictures of Santa Maria del Regno before. It's a very balanced, well-proportioned and characteristic Romanesque facade. But it looks very stark and forbidding.
This cathedral, St Andrew's, was built by a young English architect Edmund Blacket who migrated in 1843. He had such a great understanding of English Gothic buildings that even though he was 10,000 miles from home, he could build a church that looked as if it had been lifted out of an English village and dumped down in Australia. The English do not realise that he was one of their greatest 19th century architects. None of his work is purely imitative. He always designed as if he was a true Medieval architect who had got lost in the wrong century. Amandajm (talk) 14:17, 25 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
I've done Carrara! Good Work! I will leave the other one for now, as I am nearly falling off my chair! Ciao! Amandajm (talk) 14:32, 25 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Attilios! I was just looking at Holy Conversation (Piero della Francesca). I think it would be better to move it to Brera Madonna. In English, most of the altarpieces that are "sacred conversations" are not known by that name. That is the way they are described. (not Holy Conversation). This painting is usually called either the Montefeltro Altarpiace or the Brera Madonna, with the latter being the most common. Amandajm (talk) 10:03, 3 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Why are you not commenting on the picture I posted on your page? It's a recreation of that church of your, before they stuffed around with it. Amandajm (talk) 22:58, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Re Romanesque: OK! If you are going to do that, I'll help you out with the interpretation. I keep getting distracted. But I have been working through the Cathedrals of England, mainly doing the less demanding ones. I started in alphabetical order but when I got to Canterbury, I baulked, because it really is major. It has a complex history, and many different building stages so it requires a lot of writing. I's actually the cathedral with which I am the most familiar.
Anyway, I skipped it and went on to Durham which is very easy by comparison, even though it is large and one of the greatest buildings on the planet. I haven't finished it yet.
I also noticed that Florence Cathedral needed tidying up. so I am doing that concurrently. There is this misconcept in the mind of many simplistic editors that fails to perceive the essential links between things and divides them up as if they were not linked at all. There is a failure to perceive the three buildings at Florence as part of the same cathedral complex. One article for church, one for baptistry, one for campanile. Although each one is worthy of an article dealing with its architecture and decoration, the main article, on the duomo, needs to make it clear that the tower is the cathedral's tower and the baptistry is they cathedral's baptistry. Anyway, I'll write a little more about the architecture.

My dear Attilios, Nona is going to come over there to Turin and track you down and wring your neck! You are so ruthless! I have for many many weeks tried to get one of those Serbian people from to provide the answers to what a particular string of names were. As soon as someone did as they were asked, you deleted the lot! The information is useful, but it needed abreviation. Now we have more idea as to the architectural setting in Belgrade. I am going to thank her or him, and say that it was deleted in error, because it was in a box. Your comment was too rude! I thought it was only me who was so rude!

Amandajm (talk) 14:50, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes, that is what I was referring to! There was this long sentence that didn't make sense, and I had finally got someone to make sense of it, and chop! The Axe-man comes in and it is gone! But It is back, shorter and in a sentence, and I have thanked the person who providied the information... so leave it for now.
I will look at Pavia Cathedral. But I'm too tired, as it is very late! I can't sleep very well, when the weather is so hot.
The fires have been terrible, with many people killed. They will probably go for many more days, unless there is heavy rain, which is unlikely. Luckily there have been no severe fires near us yet. Amandajm (talk) 15:45, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for File:Magicovento001.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Magicovento001.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Chillum 02:00, 8 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Pier Paolo Pasolini. edit

Attilios, pray tell, why have you reverted my addition of the categories "Italian communists", "Italian Marxists", and "Marxist journalists"?

The Wikipedia article on Pasolini clearly identifies him as Marxist and a journalist. There is even a whole section on his adherence to communist beliefs. The cateogry "Italian communists" is separate from "Members of the Italian Communist Party", and the category pages clearly distinguish between these.

Clearly these categories are pertinent - after all, they are notable enough to be implicitly written into the biographical article itself.

Mölgg edit

Hi Attilios; have you read my post on the talkpage? I wrote to the homepage to ask what the correct name is and the answer was Mölgg. and that the spelling variation Moelgg is used for communications purposes. Now, if we have an email by the official homepage stating that the correct name is Mölgg and the Province of Bolzano-Bozen says there are 0 persons living in the province with the name Moelgg (you can check for all names in the province through this link [2]) I suggest you move the articles back to their correct spelling, namely: Mölgg. --noclador (talk) 14:14, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Oops - I saw your post on the talkpage of Manfred Mölgg only after I wrote the above. first: thanks for the compliment about the crests I drew. second: the email came from @moelgg.com and it explained that the name change is because the FIS "on principle does not permit the use of vowel mutations" in its lists. The official homepage is at moelgg.com because you can not register a top level domain with ö ä ü and the like. I wrote to the homepage, because being from the province I was surprised that some people think that the name is spelled Moelgg - I do not know of anyone who spells this name here in that way. I checked with the provincial name database and there is not a single person registered here with the name Moelgg, but 139 with the name Mölgg ([3] enter the name Mölgg and click on "Suche" to see the results). After I saw that I wrote the homepage of the two to ask what the correct spelling is and as I suspected they use Moelgg for communication reasons (I believe only German layout keyboards have the ä ö ü and ß letters). Therefore I moved the articles today to the correct spelling Mölgg (which also must be on the twos carta d'identita, because the provincial name list is based on the carta d'identitas handed out by the communes). I let you now decide how to proceed. --noclador (talk) 14:24, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
yes, it surprises me too that they use Moelgg in the German language section of their official homepage - my suspicion is that they do so to be consistent with the English and Italian spelling of their name. As for your theory that they are Ladin: I do not know if they are, but they are from and live both in one of the Ladin communes: Mareo - so they might be Ladin, although the provincial names database shows that the highest number of Mölgg live in the German speaking Valle Aurina (so they might have moved from there across the Val Pusteria to the Val Badia). But as they would have to get their carta d'identita from the commune of Mareo (which is 93.30% Ladin) and the bureaucracy there is almost entirely Ladin (Per legge 93,30% dei impiegati del comune di Mareo devono essere Ladini), I think that the name was not Germanized but is really Mölgg (which is also the version of the name used int he Ladin weekly La Usc di Ladins [4]).
I did already start to create articles about Italian regiments and battalions :-) User:Noclador#Alpini Project (sono un vecio del 4° Alpini ReCom di Bolzano). All articles about the Alpini on the English wiki (and most of the articles about the Italian Army brigades on the German wiki are from me). My aim is to to bring Alpini to featured article status. Annoyingly a lot of my time is taken by the constant discussion on the South Tyrolean naming disputes (two nationalists created havoc all over the articles there i.e. they tried to rename the "Neue Südtiroler Tageszeitung" (New South Tyrolean Daily into (New Daily for the province of Bolzano-Bozen) in their campaign to get rid of the name South Tyrol...) so although my main interest is to create a a perfect and wide ranging Alpini article realm I am only advancing at a slow pace... i.e. in the Alpini article only the sections Alpini#1872 to 1887 and Alpini#1888 to 1914 are finished... the rest is still to be done (I'm alone in this work...); next up: 1915-1918 plus a detailed article about the Alpine front in WWI :-) --noclador (talk) 15:30, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
The Swedish wiki has asked me to forward the email to them and has put it in the OTRS system to confirm the spelling: [5] - have you thought about what to do on the English wiki? --noclador (talk) 20:21, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

If you have nothing to say anymore I will move the names tonight to the correct Mölgg. --noclador (talk) 16:00, 5 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

you want a comment by them??? First they are not brothers, but siblings, second: we have an email by their homepages webmaster, who says the use of Moelgg is for communication reasons and the correct name is Mölgg, then we have the Ladin newspaper using only the name Mölgg; another example: the Maratona dles Dolomites in which the Mölgg races every year uses also the name Mölgg[6] - La Maratona is an event organized by Ladins from Alta Badia. The provincial database doesn't know anyone with the name Moelgg, but lots of Mölgg and on top of that: when the Province of Bolzano-Bozen sends out a press statement in Ladin they use the name Mölgg[7] the name Mölgg is also used when the province sends out a press statement in Italian[8][9] and on top of that: his ski sponsor uses the name Mölgg in its English site[10]. The name is Mölgg and I am moving now the pages, because any further discussion will only and always point to the same conclusion: It is Mölgg! --noclador (talk) 06:30, 6 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Removal of gallery at Cologne–Frankfurt high-speed rail line edit

I see you've removed the gallery on this article, because galleries must apparently be consulted at commons. What does this mean? And surely it's better to leave the gallery in but flag the requirement on the talk page or even begin whatever process is required at commons. I didn't create this gallery, but am curious because I might want to do this on other articles. --Bermicourt (talk) 09:21, 22 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I would grateful for your help here. Thanks. --Bermicourt (talk) 13:06, 1 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

In a nutshell (I have just restored some galleries also), a simple misunderstanding.
General policy is that galleries are always inappropriate in short articles ("Wikipedia is not an image gallery"), and in such cases they are best moved to Commons (revamping is only an option in longer articles)
But for longer articles, and to illustrate the text, galleries on Wikipedia are OK "where a collection of images can illustrate aspects of a subject that cannot be easily or adequately described by text or individual images".
Which - as per "adequately" - could apply here: an overview of the line cannot adequately presented by in-text images due to layout constraints. But the gallery needs revamping: the map as first image is rather nice but might go in-text above the gallery, and the gallery should run from Cologne to Frankfurt Central Station (or the other way around), presenting notable features directly related to the rail line. E.g. tunnels, bridges, stations, but probably not File:Main 08 2006 140.jpg (that could go into a gallery at Bundesautobahn 3 though). And the images should be presented in the proper sequence, i.e. as they would be encountered by a traveller.
As a rule-of-thumb:
Galleries are cool in Wikipedia,
  • if the article is already better than Start-class, and
  • if the gallery content is directly relevant to some text paragraph's content, and
  • if 4 or more images are needed to illustrate a paragraph of text or if for some other reason (e.g. layout) the images cannot be placed alongside the text.
Otherwise, galleries belong to Commons. Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 18:20, 11 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
E.g. Oriental Turtle Dove is what I would just barely consider OK... the second pic is quite useful, the others not so, so at face value it should not stand. But it improves layout quite a bit, so it is more helpful than disruptive. If it had like 3 rows of such images, I would mercilessly <!-- outcomment --> it (not delete, that is too harsh!) and let someone from the Commons crew deal with it.

Your uploads edit

Good day. I see that you have uploaded a number of images to Wikipedia. First off, thank you for your contributions. Unfortunately, there are some guidelines that we need to follow with copyrighted images. Specifically, you need to add a source for the image (a link to a website will do), a copyright tag (there are some listed at WP:ICT), and a rationale explaining why we can use a copyrighted image (explained at WP:NFURG). I see that your images fail to include one of these. Please stop uploading images and address the concerns listed above. If you need assistance, you can ask at the help desk. If you do not fix these images, and you continue to make bad uploads, you will be blocked and your images will be deleted. Thanks for your contributions! STBotI (talk) 12:21, 1 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

HSBC Trinkaus edit

I realise that Wikipedia's preferred style is not to use lists, but in the case of chronologies, I tend to prefer them because of the risk to precision that literary style poses. I have found that when people convert lists to paragraphs, they have a tendency to replace repetitive phrases such as "In 1960..." with constructions such as "A few years later,..." The result is a loss of information. I tend to favor the retention of information over aesthetics or the perfection of form. Acad Ronin (talk) 11:24, 5 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Presentation of references edit

Hi Attilios. I've reversed the unheralded reference formatting changes you'd recently done, to Huitzilopochtli and a couple of other related articles. They were intentionally presented that way, for clarity and greater ease of picking out entries in a biblio list format. There is no single mandated 'correct' reference presentational style to enforce here, that I am aware of. There are at least four or five different methods in operation (per WP:CITE#HOW); that is, methods over-and-above the de facto standard of haphazard presentation, or no presentation at all. That formatting is but a minor departure from the WP:CITESHORT method. If it's not commonly done that way, then that's more because it's uncommon for any thought to be given to layout, readability, and how a reference/bibliography is actually used—by looking up keywords (ie authors' names) in an ordered listing.

I see no issues with that style; there are featured articles that use it. It's an improvement over the usual undifferentiated and unhelpful mess. If you think any changes need making to some cite/referencing style already established in some article, it might be best to raise it on relevant talkpg first. Regards, --cjllw ʘ TALK 08:27, 21 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Attilios, thanks for your replies at my talkpg.
Re lists and bullets: afraid I don't see where in the MOS it dictates that bullet markers must always be used, either at MOS:LIST or elsewhere. Indeed, in the List styles section several different example types of lists are given, some without bullet markers. In any case, following the overarching MOS general principles for styles and formats, these need only be consistently applied within articles, not necessarily between them; sensible departures from MOS guidelines/suggestions are perfectly fine and any departures on their own are insufficient grounds to alter a deliberate chosen style from one to the other, without consensus.
As for why in this particular case bullet markers are not desirable- the reasons are twofold (although technically speaking, the colons are bullet markers, just 'invisible' ones—they generate underlying HTML code as list elements in the same way that an asterisk [*] or hash [#] does).
Firstly, a bibliography is not a run-of-the-mill list, although it technically may be a list. Since the chosen style uses hanging indents to offset the bibliography elements one from the other, using bullet markers also to do this would be redundant. The indentation is the bullet marker, if you prefer.
Second reason is a technical one. It so happens that browsers treat bullets differently, wrt to how they align the bullet marker with the indentation level. MSIE moves the bullet marker to the right if this indent is applied, whereas Firefox, Opera etc do not. So if we're using indents, when viewed in an MSIE browser the bullet gets shifted hard up against the first character of the text (or even, appears inside the text), which is not a good look (other browsers can cope with this kind of layout). Since a great many folks use MSIE, it's best to just make the bullet marker invisible (which is what the colon [:] does), and the output then looks the same across browsers. As mentioned, the hanging indent already does the job of providing a demarcation between each element, so visible bullet markers aren't needed anyway.
Hope that explains things. I have reset all those now again to the chosen presentation format. Thanks for your attention anyway. Best, --cjllw ʘ TALK 06:28, 22 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Provinze of Bolzano templates edit

If you don't agree with the new template, you should not just restore the old one with the claim "restored clearer template" a) the map is a lot clearer as to where a village is located b) dark map? then lodge a request to brighten it up at the map team of the German wikipedia as others already have requested that the maps colors be better differentiated and as for these removal of content: [11], [12] and [13] what did you think there??? --noclador (talk) 20:44, 10 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

What do you think about a map like this: commons:File:Karte Gemeinde Thun 2007.png would that be ok for you? --noclador (talk) 09:53, 11 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
As for the population graphs - where they have been missing I added them (now all the comuni of the province have them) and as for updating - I went to the University of Innsbruck and got the data from 1880 and 1910 and have begun to add them to all the comuni (the data from 1900 seems to be lost). Also the census is only done every 10 years in province so an update in 2011 and 2021 shouldn't be an impossible task for all us wikipedians :-)
As for the map: I lodged a request with the wiki map team to include a national map as with the Swiss locator maps. --noclador (talk) 12:40, 11 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Limitations of cite tag edit

Hi, try not to use the {{cite | tag for complex sources (e.g. as in Gastornis). It creates longer and more unwieldy code that is hard to read compared to when you format it manually. Also, it is ambiguous as regards East Asian author names, and cannot handle most exceptions such as multilanguage papers and multilinks. Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 03:22, 12 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for uploading an image or media.

Whilst, the image or media appears to be licensed, It would be helpful if you could confirm the photographer, author or copyright owner of the media concerned, has granted release under the licenses shown. You can do this by getting them to make a formal release,or by confirming any permission you obtained, by writing to the OTRS permissions queue as detailed in WP:COPYREQ.

If you have already approached OTRS, then please get an administrator with OTRS access to update the image information to confirm this. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 14:03, 3 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

File permission problem with File:Molfetta Cathedral.jpg edit

File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Molfetta Cathedral.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Jay32183 (talk) 07:04, 7 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Attilio! I removed the image pictured right because I think it is one of the most incompetent photographs I have ever seen in the encyclopaedia. That sort of panoramic distortion is perfectly acceptable as long as you keep the tripod head level—see numerous shots of the Italian lakes, e.g. in the Lago di Como article. But tilt the camera and you are nearly always in deep, hot water.

You can leave it in if you want, but I do think that its sheer ugliness undermines the good work you did on the article. Cheers, Ian Spackman (talk) 20:37, 19 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of World domination edit

The article World domination has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This article is strictly original research. No evidence is given that any of the real historical information is related to the topic of "world domination." No references are given for fictional "world domination", or that it has even been discussed in secondary sources.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Thanks! However weren't all mine edits, the capitals letters were added by an other user. I reverted your last edit because the cause of Battisti death are unclear and the hospital didn't officially told the cause, so I think we shouldn't add that category. About the audio samples, they are in fair use so we have to use it in the article until someone will write albums articles, although you're right saying that they are too many and they make the article unreadable. Images in mug edit

Forgive my strong language yesterday (just woke up, in a wrong time :-). I shall revert your good-faith image placement edit in mug, but let me first explain why. Image placement is an art which I'm still mastering. The most frequent mistake I see is editors forget about different screen resolution. Some operators are screen-scalable, some (specifying px size) are not. I myself test my edits on 1024x768 and 1280x1024, IE and Firefox, which I believe are the most popular settings, but some users still complain they see garbage on their PCs after my edits. Specifics in mug are: (i) You tried to equalize image size, but made it different in left and right columns. As a result, some mugs are disproportionately large on 1024x768, not to mention low res which is still used. On the other hand, Figs. 2-4 pack well into history on 1024x768, but cut through the next section on 1280x1024. (ii) Shaving mug should stay in its section. (iii) Mug tree has text over it on 1024x768 and ugly cuts though the section on 1280x1024. I accept there are too many images in the body of that article, but they are all functional. "My" operator {{clear}} is a universal approach to fix those ugly cuts through sections, on any settings and resolution. Having blank space is much less of a problem than mixed up image and text - as the main contributor I do hope to add text to fill the gaps there.

Just to illustrate my point, let us look at some page, e.g. your user page, as you suggested.

  • On my both resolutions, I see your nice veteran badge completely covered up by the TOC text. Maybe __NOTOC__ is an option, followed by some image placement tweak?
  • "Articles I created or brought to a decent status" has a fixed width and thus takes small part of your user pagewidth. I would use, e.g., 100% instead of 450px. An alternative is {{collapse}} template (but I admit that might be ugly there).
  • Your barnstars have variable width, which again can be tweaked by adding, e.g., "width: 90%" into the "style".

Cheers. Materialscientist (talk) 23:49, 1 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

PS Just a note that mere editing your talk page of 243 kb is time consuming on some slow PCs. Usual practice is to archive long talks.
