Where and why do I apply to be granted access to material for reseach?

Aka "would really use some ebooks but I'm poor". SNAAAAKE!! (talk) 02:53, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

I am actually quite curious too. I would think Wikipedia:The Wikipedia Library is the go to place for this situation, but I've never really used it nor read about how to use it... Alex Shih (talk) 02:57, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
Yes, Alex, that's a starting place as is Wikipedia:WikiProject_Resource_Exchange/Resource_Request. Snake - I think one of the coordinators at the Wikipedia Library can point you in the right direction. What ebooks are you needing? There may be a scholarship program or the like via the WMF. Atsme📞📧 03:01, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

For starters maybe

  • Hebert, Jill Marie (2008). Shapeshifter: The Manifestations of Morgan le Fay. ISBN 0549756647. - can't seem to find this one. Maybe eBay?
  • Larrington, Carolyne (2006). King Arthur's Enchantresses: Morgan and Her Sisters in Arthurian Tradition. I.B. Tauris. ISBN 1784530417. - include this one with The Myth...
  • Pérez, Kristina (2014). The Myth of Morgan la Fey. Palgrave Macmillan. ISBN 1137332980. see your email

because I've been using only Google Books searches. The second is pretty affordable ([1]) but the other two have absurd prices ([2] [3]). SNAAAAKE!! (talk) 14:04, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

Snake - see my response interspersed in red text and check your email. Atsme📞📧 14:55, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

  • Check out the Internet Public Library for books, newspapers & collections you may find useful - See this link - unfortunately, they are no longer updating or adding any more to the site but access to what is already there will continue. Atsme📞📧 03:21, 6 September 2018 (UTC)

How to fix all the nonsensical and/or stupid description of articles?

Like fan service being idiotically falsely described as "television program" or Ywain being a "fictional human" which sounds like written by a literal robot. SNAAAAKE!! (talk) 16:07, 7 September 2018 (UTC)

360 Viewing

To all my TPS - it would be a welcome addition if WP adopted the 360 viewing feature; Facebook already has the feature. It adds so much more to articles about geographical topics such as national parks, historic sites, landscapes, architecture and more. The feature made #11 on the 2017 WP Wishlist. I'm not sure when the 2018 Wishlist will be available, much less where it is/will be located for input, but wanted to make my tps aware of it if they're not already. MONGO, this feature would be a plus for the park articles you've worked on. Montanabw, Project Equine would benefit from this feature as well. Any additional information regarding this topic is welcome. Atsme📞📧 14:56, 7 September 2018 (UTC)

Somebody said add it to the 2018 wish list. Myself I already use 720plus viewing but it only works after I had four hard drinks.--MONGO (talk) 20:24, 7 September 2018 (UTC)

From me, currently not at home, by a way, but appreciative of your message. The sooner we get a new Arbcom, the better. Also, maybe we should mandate some connection to the content, most of the current bunch do nothing. There's a big difference between "policing" the encyclopedia and "arbitrating dispute" which is all these super users should be doing, at the request of the community. Tryptofish you know I value our Wikifriendship but this edit and the ones following it concern me for 2 reasons:

  2. It's similar to the behavior that got me t-banned.

So I'll close with this. Atsme✍🏻📧 20:55, 17 September 2018 (UTC)

Thanks, you just gave me a much-needed laugh! And I'm glad that you agree with me about it. By the way, I promise that I did read your reply to me at AE where you replied and then quickly self-reverted. That's one where we won't agree, but I still appreciate the exchange of views. --Tryptofish (talk) 20:59, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
That's how it's supposed to work which explains why I appreciate working with editors who have evolved into a similar way of thinking (not that there's anything wrong with being unevolved). Debate is healthy - opposing views are healthy - BUT impatience and time constraints are not conducive to healthy discourse or any other kind of social intercourse. Think 😇 when reading my comments. And another thing I most appreciate about your intellect (most of the time) is that you get my humor, despite the occasional bumps in the road when you totally misinterpret my intentions on serious topics, the latter of which may warrant a refresher course for you in "understanding the perceptions of a cowgirl" but I digress. Notice the time - I'm hiding in the house (which is the same as burying my head in the sand) so I won't fret over the employees bearing down on the weedeaters and speed racing around in the paddock on the zero-turn oblivious to the two high-strung American Saddlebreds in the same paddock trying to escape the scary machines. Where are the Tums? Hell, forget that - where's my ice mug and quart of Bud Ice? Well...I'll just write it off to a confidence lesson for those two horses. 😂 Atsme✍🏻📧 21:59, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
Well, anyone who appreciates my intellect is either nuts or is onto the fact that I don't have one (actually, that was very nice of you and I thank you for it). Bud Ice? No wonder you need Tums. I'll buy you a real beer sometime. --Tryptofish (talk) 22:57, 17 September 2018 (UTC)

It's all about one's perspective.
Tryp's "full of" comment reminded me of the issues I've been experiencing for the past 2 weeks....torrential rains = plumbing issues with the ranch septic system & lateral lines - ground is soaked, so the lines backed up like 5:00 pm traffic in L.A. Got that fixed 30 min. ago. Next were the internet throttle issues - 2 weeks of hit & miss wifi, forced to use iPhone hot spot, overloaded the unlimited (go figure), so they throttled me down to 128k modem speed. AT&T tech just left - all is fixed (only took 2 days) and my downloads are flowing like a river - it invoked images of Tryp the night before his colonoscopy - not the most pleasant of thoughts, but...WP is the uncensored encyclopedia anyone can edit, hey? (I'm really just trying to balance the images with text so don't mind my rambling.) Atsme✍🏻📧 22:47, 25 September 2018 (UTC)
AT&T tech Well there's your problem, right there. You need fiber or cable. Cable is a bit unreliable on speeds during peak hours, but 10X as stable as AT&T. Don't ever get satellite unless it's a last resort, no matter what they tell you. You'll lose internet every time it clouds up once your LMB gets broken in. ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 02:43, 26 September 2018 (UTC)
Could always do Point-to-point internet. Works decent if you are out in the middle of no where like my parents. PackMecEng (talk) 02:49, 26 September 2018 (UTC)
I'm getting 15+mbps download, and 1mbps upload but paying for 18mbps which is the highest speed available out here via DSL. Rural areas don't enjoy the convenience of fiber optics or cable. In fact, it was less than 5 years ago (if that) when AT&T first offered DSL out here - but first, we had to pull strings and ring a lot of bells at corporate to get what we have now. Prior to that, the only choice was Hughes Net or an AT&T phone card....cha-ching, cha-ching. I get 3x the speed with cable when I'm living on-island, and can upgrade to fiber optics at a higher fee. Hell, about 8 yrs ago, I enjoyed faster internet speeds than I have now when I was staying in Huancavelica and traveling through some of the small villages in the Andean highland in Peru. 😂 Question - can I bypass ISP throttling with a VPN, and if so, what kind of service would you recommend? Pack - I never heard of it, but will read the link. Atsme✍🏻📧 03:19, 26 September 2018 (UTC)
I might be outing myself a bit (for those inclined to do a lot of research on me, which is actually kinda sad because I'm really boring), but one of my company's clients is a rural fiber ISP whose tagline is "Broadband to the boonies", and while they had max speeds of 50Mbps for most of their life, they're now expanding and offering 100Mbps and planning on offering gig service within two years. Rural areas are often the first to get fiber, because they're the areas most willing to pay the higher rates that justify installing the infrastructure.
I'm getting 15+mbps download, and 1mbps upload While your actual speeds will almost never match what you pay for, that's actually pretty low speed even for DSL, which can usually get up to a claimed 45Mbps (double that for business accounts). But I know what you mean; I've got plenty of family in rural areas who have slim pickings on ISP. To answer your question: No, a VPN won't make any difference, because your ISP sits between you and it. One thing you can do is called Channel bonding and it basically means you order multiple internet connections (for DSL, you'll also need multiple phone lines, but those are cheap these days) and run them into a box that "bonds" them together. So each additional one almost increases your total bandwidth by the bandwidth of the connections. As of not very long ago, I'm personally running a pair of bonded cable connections, each one claimed to be 110Mbps, but which actually run at about 80Mbps each. My total DL speed is usually around 140Mbps, which is plenty for my family. But I could add up to two more, each of which would bump me up by 60-70Mbps. It gets expensive after the first two (I'm paying $130/month for mine, and that's with me calling up threatening to go with DSL every time my "2 year guaranteed rate" promo expires so they put me back on another one), but if you love your gadgets like I do, it can be worth it. ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 03:31, 26 September 2018 (UTC)
Hmmm...I'll have to look into that one, MPants. As for the point-to-point, I did talk to a company several years ago about broadcast internet but a direct line of sight is required, which meant I had to build a tower to get over the trees and hills in order to be in direct line with their transmitter. Question - I'm wanting to install 6 - 8 wireless surveillance cameras in strategic places in three barns - something that can record video, is solar operated and can be monitored from my laptop or iPhone. I'd rather not have to install a second internet connection in the barn unless I have to, so I was wondering if something like this would work? Atsme✍🏻📧 03:43, 26 September 2018 (UTC)
Yeah the line of sight is kind of a pain. When my parents retired to Idaho so that was not an issue since the target was on one of the mountains. Otherwise could be interesting depending on the area. PackMecEng (talk) 12:38, 26 September 2018 (UTC)

Your editing behavior at Irish bull terrier has become disruptive. It would serve the project far better if you would focus on crafting a paragraph to add to Staffordshire Bull Terrier and propose it on the TP of that article in light of the prevailing consensus. To the IP

I removed your comment, and ask that you please not comment on my user page anymore. It cannot possibly be good faith when it's block evasion. If you are User:Amfithea expressing concerns about the Angelique Rockas BLP, my good faith suggestion for you is to recognize (1) why your edits/behavior led to you being indef blocked, (2) why commenting on talk pages under different IP accounts is not good faith because you are violating/evading your block which may be considered harassment and result in a permanent site ban, and (3) why it is important that you cease and desist if you ever hope to get your block lifted. If the latter is a consideration for you, then I strongly advise you to stop evading your block, and stop commenting on WP while you are blocked. The only venue where you should be commenting is on your own TP after you fully understand why you were blocked, and are actually willing to correct the misbehavior. Read the conditions of your indef block, the procedures for appealing it, and follow it to the letter on your TP. If your block is removed, you are required to disclose your WP:COI, and be sure to not edit any article which may be influenced by your COI. You can make suggestions on the TP of the articles once your block is lifted. Atsme✍🏻📧 15:12, 20 October 2018 (UTC)

Boxed in...can't get to Conference

2018 WP Conference, Columbus OH, the Evening reception at Thomas Library

Pano of the Ohio Expo Center trailer/living qtrs parking where we parked and are now unable to get out. If you think it's frustrating when your edits are reverted...try to get out of this parking lot.
Loyal Wikipedians gather to rescue Atsme via helicopter, with predictable results.

So here I sit boxed in with no way to get to Ohio State University where the 2018 Wikipedia Conference is being held (and is wrapping up tonight). Where I'm staying now - the Ohio Expo Center - is only 10 min away from the university, but I can't get out of the parking lot with our vehicle, and the Expo Center doesn't allow anyone onto the grounds without paying a $25/fee. Even if I covered the fee, it would be hard for the driver to find me - I don't even know where I am. Friday night I was golf-carted to meet the uber, so that worked out perfectly (in the cold rain) and I was able to attend the reception at Thomas Library. Fun times!! I enjoyed every minute of it (except when they stopped serving alcohol at exactly 8 pm with me holding a free drink ticket!!) It was my first conference, and a great opportunity to put faces on the Wikipedians I've collaborated with over the years. As for the rest of the conference on Sat & Sun...well, I have -0- sense of direction (especially considering the mass confusion here at the Expo Center) and was dependent on others to get me in and out of the fairgrounds to meet the uber. Of course, the horse show schedule conflicted with the WP Conference schedule, and I was left without a chauffeur to get me to the uber. Enter Murphy.   I thought it was going to be a piece of cake to attend the Wiki conference and also be here at the All American Quarter Horse Congress to watch my granddaughter compete but it didn't quite work out that way. Each venue is its own beast and both require 100% attention. The family won over WP. Next year, I'll have the kinks worked out. Atsme✍🏻📧 21:40, 21 October 2018 (UTC)

We edit conflicted, but the reason I closed was that 28bytes had blocked, which I considered an answer to your question. Since it was an individual admin action that was only a month, there really wasn't a need for community review. TonyBallioni (talk) 00:43, 3 November 2018 (UTC)

I'm glad you're the admin and I'm not - it's all too confusing. It's all I can do to stay abreast of NPP & AfC with all the fun new features!! You left us too soon. 😊 Atsme✍🏻📧 00:45, 3 November 2018 (UTC)

Chillaxin' out on a scoot

Oh yes, Na1000! My son-in-law, a former future son-in-law, my 2 daughters and I along with our friends (most of my friends were either attorneys or ranchers for whatever reason, I can't explain) would take off on a backroad country tour and would end up at whatever point we needed sleep, then we'd take off again. Big Bend was a great place to tour, and so were some of the back roads leading down to the Hill Country. Great switchbacks and lots of fun "hole-in-the-wall" stops. We'd even go up into the mountains, like Ouchita or over to Broken Arrow where we rented a beautiful mountain cabin. Oh my - the fun times!! All of my friends got old and pretty much stopped touring which left me with the younger crowd, most of whom had families and suffered from getaway restrictions. I sometimes wore a shirt that reads "This bitch rides her own!" but I never imagined I'd be wearing it while riding alone. 😂 Atsme✍🏻📧 13:34, 3 November 2018 (UTC)

Wow, nice memories. Not sure what to say in response to all of that, other than I'm jealous! I've traveled, but never really on a bike. Yeah, the U.S. is a beautiful country with lots to see, lots of culture and interesting people. People are actually nice for the most part too, although I've come across some that are not every now and then. A fine point about traveling is that there's an element of unexpectedness, in which chance encounters with cool people can lead to pleasant interactions and memories. North America1000 20:13, 3 November 2018 (UTC)
See this CNN article - the closest thing we have to something like that on WP is Motorcycle touring which defines the activity. Wonder if an article about the most notable motorcycle tours would survive AfD? Atsme✍🏻📧 20:53, 3 November 2018 (UTC)
Na1000, wasn't intending to make you jealous, at least not anymore than you intended to make me jealous with your crab dip article. Makes me want some just thinking about it. 😂 Atsme✍🏻📧 21:18, 3 November 2018 (UTC)
Nice read (CNN). You could use some of that to expand the Touring article, rather than risking deletion. Ah yes, crab dip. I remember creating these types of articles because I noticed that none existed. Common savory foodstuffs; should have an article! See also: Chips and dip. A cup of coffee for you!

It was nice to meet you at the WikiConference North America. I looked for you after the first day I missed seeing you around.

As you noticed, it was only 40% Wikipedia people and the rest were doing Commons, Wikidata, Wikisource, or anything else. I am glad you checked it out. Be sure to tell your family that you are a superstar editor and mediator in Wikipedia, and also tell them thanks from the Wiki community for letting you step away to join the conference while you did.

Bucking horse

...is a redirect to bronc riding. There is a small section with few to no references on this breed/variety. There has to be a lot more to the topic than this. Barbara 15:30, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

  Warning...Badger in waiting.
You are spot on, Barb. I will add that rodeo stock has become a touchy subject because of animal rights activists but I feel they have done some good by drawing attention to the way some rough stock handlers were treating their stock, and being a catalyst for positive change. See this article. One of our productive rodeo editors is Dawnleelynn - maybe she has time to work on it. I focus more on AQHA halter & performance horses, particularly cutting horse events. Hi Atsme, sorry it took me so long to reply. As for time to work on something, I can always make some time for you. So just doing a bucking horse article for bronc riding (both disciplines). I think I could figure that out with the experience I have now. The web article you linked is a good start. I'll let you both know when I have something to look at. I'm not working quite at my usual speed right now, but I can certainly get it done. dawnleelynn(talk) 04:37, 17 November 2018 (UTC)

Hey Atsme, I hadn't been in this part of the rodeo area for a bit. But I just did a search and there's an article on Broncos. I remember it now, it's not a great article, but it's there nonetheless. It's actually linked in the first paragraph of the bronc riding article too. It's almost completely uncited. Do we want to work with Bronco as the article title? Or, move to bucking horse? I can definitely use some of the content, assuming I can cite it. dawnleelynn(talk) 17:43, 17 November 2018 (UTC)

No problem, Dawnleelynn - I'm tied-up tighter'n Dick's hatband working on some dog articles, but here's what I'm thinking - Bronco is so outdated and movieish for what we need and doesn't really speak to the topic. It could/should be merged/redirected as the history/etymology section of a new article titled Bucking horse (I just removed the redirect by Montanabw and pinging her now). I Googled "roughstock" and the Oxford describes it as "North American. Horses or bulls used in rodeo events." And then I Googled bucking horse and got 6,510,000 results (0.65 seconds) and exactly what we need. Bronco returns a much larger number in the search, but you have to consider the Bronco car and football team so it's a false equivalency. Give me a little time to get the article started and then you can take the lead. Atsme✍🏻📧 18:11, 17 November 2018 (UTC)
