G'day Allie

I'm slowly but surely trying to clarify wmf's child protection practices (as you probably know, from the perspective of improving them from not really existing, to something a bit better!) - I've asked Lar (on his commons talk page) about whether or not he's ever reported any explicit image / media to any external agency (possibly on the grounds of child porn, or for any other reason) - and I vaguely recall that you've mentioned that you've been involved with some pretty horrible stuff - I think on this project? Could I ask you the same question as I asked Lar, which is whether or not you forwarded info. to any external agency, and how that went etc.? Cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 01:21, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi PM. While I've dealt with explicit imagery on here, I've never had to deal with contacting external agencies re. images on Wikipedia. Were I to find dubiously legal content, I'd likely remove it immediately and contact our legal counsel and ask him to deal - Alison 19:53, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

Not again...

Alison, don’t know if you are busy right now, well I am, and this is the sole reason I don’t have time to report extensively User:Fruit.Smoothie for unacceptable harassment and general poor behaviour. Please take a look at [1] and [2] If you are too busy, pass this on to someone else. This users harassment is causing me a degree of stress in my life when I can ill afford it. He has done this before. Thanks. --大輔 泉 (talk) 18:19, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

User_talk:Ashot_Arzumanyan

This user is requesting unblocking of 83.139.38.1 - you'd previously blocked it as an open proxy that was used abusively. I've just checked again, and ports 80 and 443 are open; 443 has a self-signed certificate, and both attempt to redirect to a localhost address. Would you mind taking a look into this? I'm very tempted to decline, but I wanted to check with you first in case I'm missing something. Hersfold (t/a/c) 22:03, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

Mmm. It's "featured" on Project Honeypot, so may be just a misconfigured gateway or something. I notice that the editor in question consistently uses disparate Armenian IPs, so suspect he may have just got unlucky. Thoughts? - Alison 04:27, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
Hmm. It's up to you. When I saw "Used abusively - checkuserblock" I assumed that there'd been some socking taking place here. If he's not involved in any socking, then it's probably ok. Up to you, though - proxies aren't my forte. MuZemike seems willing to grant an IPBE, he may be stopping by here shortly. Hersfold (t/a/c) 20:15, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
Is there anything else we can do to allow him to edit again? I believe he's acting in good faith and understood what he did wrong. That's why I brought up the possibility of granting him IPBE on Hersfold's talk page. –MuZemike 20:22, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
Yes, please sort out IPBE or whatever so this user can edit again. He made some inadvertent errors and was treated somewhat harshly as a result, but has made substantial contributions overall, and responded very positively when he was given any guidance. Ty 13:39, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
I'm okay with granting IPBE here, if someone wants to go ahead and do that - Alison 08:51, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Qaqwewew

I hope that the accounts that I have added to the SPI can help to find the actual sock master. I don't know how to determine whether an account will turn out as stale in the SPI or not.  Cs32en Talk to me  07:07, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Jordo72

The editing histories of Qaqwewew (talk · contribs) and Jordo72 (talk · contribs) show several instances when one account starts editing just after the other stopped editing. Yet, both accounts have edited on Nov. 30, 2009, at 20:27: Jordo72, Qaqwewew. See also intersectContribs. However, the evidence is probably not conclusive without further evidence. Do you have an idea what to look for to either confirm or disprove a connection between these accounts?  Cs32en Talk to me  07:56, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Sock Question

So if you can find all the socks at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Brucejenner/Archive, can't you just block the IP address permanently from editing/creating accounts? CTJF83 chat 08:47, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

There are actually two IP ranges that are already softblocked, relating to that editor. However, they're bypassing the account creation block and continuing to sock. I can't hardblock the ranges at this time as there would be too much collateral damage - Alison 08:50, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
Ugh, the user switches IPs, wonderful. So my only option is to keep on reporting suspected socks? CTJF83 chat 09:27, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Rename for John Patrick Bedell?

What do you think of renaming it to 2010 Pentagon shooting? I ask here first since you were the one that protected it a bit ago, which included restricting the page moves. Tarc (talk) 23:03, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Personally, I think it probably makes the most sense, as it's largely WP:BLP1E. It was originally protected as it's a prime target for pagemove vandalism. Possibly make it a redir? - Alison 23:04, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
That's how most others are, like Joe Stack, so yea, sounds good. Thanks. :) Tarc (talk) 23:05, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Protection for David Calvert article

Hi - I notice that you've indefinitely protected the article on David Calvert. Is this in line with an OTRS request? If not, I'd oppose this, as the article has existed for a month-and-a-half without receiving any vandalism, and Calvert is no more a highly visible target than many other politicians in Northern Ireland whose articles are not protected. Warofdreams talk 10:16, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Question

Hello, I don't know much about oversight but I thought this might qualify. As you can see from this dif it has been reverted. My concern is the personal information such as name and email. I will leave this to your judgement. Thanks for your time, --CrohnieGalTalk 15:21, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi there. I think this one is okay right now, and that suppressing it is like to just likely to cause more problems that it will solve. Thanks for reverting - Alison 19:58, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

Follow up CU request

Can you please check if the editor on that Hyderabad IP range is Tharikrish (talk · contribs) ? Abecedare (talk) 06:18, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

Doing it right now, actually. Also checking the other IP range. Hiding behind IPs to perform seriously offensive vandalism is just not acceptable - Alison 06:20, 13 March 2010 (UTC)
No, Tharikrish (talk · contribs) is   Unrelated - Alison 06:28, 13 March 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. I'm surprised though, since this edit and this seem to refer to the same comment. Anyway, can deal with each as and when they resume problematic editing. Cheers. Abecedare (talk) 06:32, 13 March 2010 (UTC)
It might be linkable on behaviour, but the technical stuff just isn't there, I'm afraid. Sorry :( - Alison 06:34, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

Don't mean to fish, but could it be Vvarkey (talk · contribs) ? He too wanted to include greater content about the recent scandal, complained about it to User:SpacemanSpiff, and refers to 15,000 pegeviews (although, to be fair, the IP user could have just read about it). Abecedare (talk) 06:38, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

Vvarkey also warned User:Ringess for "suppression" and reported them to AIV for "vandalism". Looks more likely to me now. Abecedare (talk) 06:42, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

No, it's not Vvarkey (talk · contribs) either. I think that's enough as   CheckUser is not for fishing - Alison 06:51, 13 March 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. Nothing but red-herrings in these waters. :-) Abecedare (talk) 06:55, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

You guys are really pathetic.. Hmm...looks like I have to say goodbye to Wiki. It seems a true and neutral view regarding the article will never come out. Not a single admin chided when an editor can openly say Indians are "sexually repressed"..and I can go on..but no I am not going to do that...

So no more Wiki for me (I am not going to use my another account also..whats the point ?..its not neutral anymore).

There's no excuse for racist, sexually-tinged vandalism of the sort you were peddling around here. Seriously - if you don't come back after that spree of the last few weeks, is Wikipedia worse off? I don't think so - Alison 06:49, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

Plenty of vandalism and racist attacks on 219.64.64.0/20 - it's okay to rangeblock this for short periods of time, but not for too long - Alison 06:52, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

Seems to be quiet for now. Will rangeblock if the user returns. Cheers. Abecedare (talk) 07:01, 13 March 2010 (UTC)
Ok, cool. There's not a lot of activity on that range, under the hood, so don't fret *too* much. A day or two at a time is not unreasonable here - Alison 07:03, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

ED

Since you're one of the few sensible people on ED, maybe you could enlighten me on the whole Evers thing. Heck, maybe I am just paranoid, but, really, wouldn't you be, too? If he does exist, why is there no actual information of him out there, anywhere? If he's a private person, why is there a big ED article about him, with a picture and all that? What is his role, exactly? --Conti| 17:09, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Joseph Evers

Alison, since you seem to know who's who and what's what at Dramatica, may I ask a straight question: Is Joseph Evers a real person or a nom de plume? If yes, the article might as well say that the owner of the site is Joe Blow or Donald Duck. Since this issue has been raised, it now needs to be cleared up.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 15:48, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

As I understand it, Joseph Evers is a pretty busy man. He sends emails out and is involved in the general running of things at a high level. I've never met the guy in person (wrong part of the planet, sorry!) so can't personally attest to his physical reality, but I certainly believe in his existence - Alison 07:00, 13 March 2010 (UTC)
OK, message received and understood. Perhaps when the busy Mr. Evers returns refreshed after his current holiday in Yucatan, he will enlighten us all.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 07:33, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

Wikipedia policy on more than one account

From a policy perspective, I just looked at the policy, and it confirmed what I originally thought that there is no ban against having more than one account even though it's not recommended, but there is for certain usage, like using them to gang up on someone in edit wars. So when you're comparing two people to see if they're connected, are you really supposed to be doing in depth searching on a particular user when there is no defined abuse complained about of that user? The way it "seems" from my perspective (even if I'm wrong) is that now that you've determined that I and barney are likely two different people you're trying to find some other way to get me in trouble, when I wasn't the alleged puppetmaster or the one that got banned or broke significant rules. Is that how it works? Someone makes a sockpuppet complaint and after you don't find a connection then it's okay for you to explore one's entire history and everything they've ever done? Or am I just way off here? Thanks a bunch. NavalExpanse (talk) 04:30, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

There's no ban on having multiple accounts, but there's certainly a ban on abusing multiple accounts. The only reason I'm looking at all, really, is because I'm just doing my job as checkuser and running this case. So in your case, there was a complaint of abuse. I have no interest in 'getting you into trouble' - I've not known about your existence until just now, to be honest. And as it turns out, there are questions to be answered - Alison 05:28, 20 March 2010 (UTC)
