Addition to Kalliroi Parren

edit

Hello Alexandrathom, just wanted to chat with you about your addition to Kalliroi Parren. It looks like the material that you added was copied from the Brooklyn Museum's website. The text on the Brooklyn Museum's website is copyrighted, but available for use under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-commercial license. Unfortunately, this license is not compatible with Wikipedia's Attribution Share-alike license. If the museum would like to donate this specific text under an Attribution Share-alike license, they will need to verify this by sending an email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org (See Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries). Otherwise, I'm afraid the text will need to be removed from Wikipedia, per our copyright policies. Let me know if you have any questions about this. Cheers. Kaldari (talk) 21:20, 31 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Kaldari. Thanks for getting in touch. I think it's best to remove the text I added at this point. I have gone ahead and done that. Thanks! Alexandrathom (talk) 21:29, 31 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Removal of references

edit

I was also wondering why you are removing the references for several articles related to the Dinner Party installation. Wikipedia requires that information be verifiable in reliable sources. Thus, it's usually a bad idea to remove references unless you feel that they aren't reliable. Kaldari (talk) 21:24, 31 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Kaldari. Articles on each of the Heritage Floor women on Dinner Party Database are not cited nor are lists of reference provided. Therefore, when a Wikipedia article on a Heritage Floor woman cites The Dinner Party Database, a cycle of poorly sourced material is created. I am trying to replace the references on Wikipedia to The Dinner Party Database with the original, secondary source material used to write those articles. Does this make sense? Alexandrathom (talk) 21:33, 31 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Yes, that completely makes sense. In one case, however, it looks like you removed a reference unrelated to the Dinner Party database: [1]. Perhaps this was just an accident though. Kaldari (talk) 22:24, 31 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Also I would suggest that for any edits where you are removing references, that you explain the rationale in the edit summary. Unexplained removal of references is often treated as vandalism, so you might inadvertently trigger attention from the vandal patrollers. Just a suggestion, though :) Thanks for your work on these articles. Kaldari (talk) 22:28, 31 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi again! Yes I must have removed that other source by accident. I will look into that ASAP. Going forward, I will certainly explain my rationale in the edit summary. Thanks for the heads up! 63.118.144.98 (talk) 23:09, 31 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Jane Gordon (jewelry designer)

edit

Hi Alexandrathom! Thanks, as always, for improving Wikipedia! I just took a look at your article Jane Gordon (jewelry designer) and I have a few concerns:

  • Two sources are used, and only one is reliable (the news article). At this point, the article doesn't show that Gordon is notable enough (per WP:NOTABLE) to be kept in Wikipedia.
  • I had to remove the statement about her parents being left wing radical Jewish intellectuals. Without citations, we can't state things like that. It violates our WP:BLP policy.
  • Can you replace her website citations? Sadly that's not reliable (see reliable for more information) and doesn't prove notability.

So basically, if you can replace the citations that are unreliable and use more reliable sources to cite the article, it should be good to go. Also, just one reminder, we use surnames, not first names, when writing biographies (so Gordon, not Jane). I hope this helps some. Feel free to stop by the Teahouse for more help. Hi SarahStierch. Thank you for your helpful comments. I will work through these and try to address your concerns to the best of my ability. Alexandrathom (talk) 13:48, 18 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Kuba divination, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Kete (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Nganga

edit

I have supported your suggestion about merging N'anga with Nganga, but I have some reservations about the whole structure of the way we deal with African Traditional Religion through this term. Clearly this term is a multiple reflex of a Proto-Bantu root and is thus found in slight variations throughout the entire Bantu-speaking world. The problem is, should we (the Wikipedia community) develop separate entries for the term in each Bantu language? Of should we do some other solution. I can't say.Beepsie (talk) 18:58, 14 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Beepsie. I think the best immediate solution is to address the point you make here in the article itself, which will serve as a disclaimer for missing information as well as a sub-textual invitation for Wikipedia contributors to add information that relates to different variations of this term when they can. Subsections should be added for variations on the term when necessary. Do you agree? Alexandrathom (talk) 16:32, 15 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Change to article

edit

Hi, I'm curious why you removed the citations from the Adelheid Popp article, per this change. It appears to be a reliable secondary source from a respected institution. Now the paragraph has no citations, and the content came from that. So...where do we cite that information from now? SarahStierch (talk) 19:58, 10 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi SarahStierch. Thanks for your comment. Articles on each of the Heritage Floor women on Dinner Party Database are not cited nor are reference/source lists provided. Therefore, when a Wikipedia article on a Heritage Floor woman cites The Dinner Party Database, a cycle of poorly sourced material is created. I am trying to replace the references on Wikipedia to The Dinner Party Database with the original, secondary source material used to write those articles. In the case of Adelheid Popp, I'm actually in the process of conducting further research but as of now, can't seem to find the original source material. Would you recommend inserting a "citation needed" tag or deleting the information in question? For obvious reasons, I'm reluctant to do the latter! Thanks again.Alexandrathom (talk) 20:04, 10 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Ah, I see. Good idea. I generally put "citation needed". Unless the content is something super questionable (i.e. "She had 2 children out of wedlock"). I've actually been asking websites, like the Dinner Party one, to add their references. It's slowly starting to happen with the World Digital Library. Might be a good effort to reach out to the Brooklyn Museum (I know they did have a group of interns and staff research that material, so I do trust it). Thanks for the work you're doing. I wrote my MA thesis about the Dinner Party so it's quite close to my heart! SarahStierch (talk) 20:07, 10 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
It's good that you trust it, Sarah, since Alexandra is the Brooklyn, here :) I just came to say Hi and to let you know I mentioned you last week during a lesson of the #wikisoo course, thanks for your work! --Elitre (talk) 20:25, 10 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hi, Elitre! Thank you for mentioning the Brooklyn Museum's project during a lesson of the #wikisoo course. SarahStierch, I was going to say in response to your last message that I blogged about the process of replacing TDP database citations in Wikipedia with the original source material here.

Soliciting Feedback for Art+Feminism grants

edit

Hi Alexandrathom, we are laying plans for the 2015 Art+Feminism editathon. As part of this process we have written two linked PEG and IEG grants. We have given extensive community notice, but haven’t generated substantial feedback. As one of the Satellite Event organizers we would really like your feedback, comments and questions, and if you support the grants, your endorsement of one or both of them. Additionally, we have confirmed International Women's Day, March 8th 2015 as the date of the international editathon. We hope you will be able to participate, as an organizer, facilitator, or participant. On behalf of my co-organizers. --Theredproject (talk) 21:12, 19 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Invitation: Let's Talk Diversity

edit

Dear Alexandra,
my name is María, I am community Liaison for Learning and Evaluation team at Wikimedia Foundation. I reach out to you because I want to invite you to take part in a campaign we started some weeks ago, «Let's Talk Diversity». The aim of this campaign is to have users who have worked to bridge Wikimedia's diversity gaps contribute their learning stories. There are different ways to participate: by sharing a problem you faced when working, a solution, or write a Learning Pattern to address both a problem and a solution.
I know about two projects in which you were involved that focus on diversity:

When translating this article form Hyperallergic to Spanish (for Wikimedia Argentina's blog) I saw that you were very reflexive about your own work. This is why I felt compelled to invite you to share your views.
Please, feel free to reach out to me on my talk page on Meta, or by answering here, as well.

Thanks in advance for your time and attention! Best, MCruz (WMF) (talk) 17:53, 6 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
