Shinee is a South Korean boy group formed by S.M. Entertainment in 2008[1] and consists of five members: Onew, Jonghyun, Key, Minho and Taemin.[2] The group has released various studio albums in Korean and Japananese, several Japanese singles, extended plays and have participated for soundtracks for various Korean dramas. They also have been a part of the SM Town's winter vacation album 2011 Winter SMTown – The Warmest Gift and the summer vacation album 2009 Summer SMTown – We Are Shining with other fellow SM artists.

Jonghyun debuted as a songwriter in 2009, writing the Korean lyrics to Shinee's fourth promotional single, "Juliette", which was featured on the groups second EP, Romeo, released in May 2009.[3] The same year Key participated in writing the rap lyrics to the song "Get Down" with fellow member Minho for the group third EP 2009, Year of Us.[4] In 2010 he participated in the writing of three songs on Shinee's second Korean studio album, Lucifer, the first, "Up & Down", which was co-written with Misfit while fellow-member Minho wrote the rap lyrics, the second, "Obsession", which was completely written by Jonghyun with Minho once again working on his own rap, and the third "Shout Out" co-written by all members of Shinee, JQ and Misfit. Onew also participated on the albums songwriting, penning the lyrics to the song "Your Name", while once again Minho took part in the rap writing.[5]

Two years later, in 2012, Jonghyun co-wrote the lyrics to "Alarm Clock" with Minho, a song about wishing to wake up from the nightmare of a past break up, and also wrote the lyrics to "Honesty", which was described as a song written for the fans who had "stayed by the groups side with unchanging love until that point", both songs were featured on the fourth EP, Sherlock.[6]

In February 2013, Shinee released the first part of their third studio album Dream Girl – The Misconceptions of You, Jonghyun penned the lyrics to the song "Spoiler" while Minho contributed the rap lyrics to five of the nine songs, including "Girls, Girls, Girls", which was co-written with Key.[7][8] In April the second part, Why So Serious? – The Misconceptions of Me, was released and Minho contributed the rap lyrics to four songs, including "Can't Leave" which was written by labelmate Shim Chang-min of the pop duo TVXQ[9], while fellow member Jonghyun co-wrote two of the nine songs.[10][11] In August the compilation album of the third studio album was released, containing part one and two title The Misconceptions of Us, plus additional two new songs, which were both written by Jonghyun.[12] Shinee's the fifth EP, Everybody was released in October, which incorporates complextro and R&B-slow jam music genres. Jonghyun penned the lyrics to "Symptoms" and Minho contributed the rap lyrics to three songs, co-writting "Colorful" with Key.[13]
